War on Everyone at the Deauville Film Festival

It had been hours accumulated over months that Elba had attended Fist and Furious. The quiet observer could only survive by first knowing each of their opponent’s weaknesses and skills. There was enough information to conclude this was far out of her league, in her current state. Her wolf side could match that of a redcap, surely. Her pain tolerance, stamina, her technique were all begging for improvement. Elba began to doubt the power behind her strength when she watched a single punch draw horror film levels of blood. Shuddering, Elba returned home that day, to the Skullglade cabin.

The girls had been running about all summer, Elba in tow. Now, with the twins back in school, the wolf’s priorities had begun to shift onto herself. That was an entirely new idea, altogether. Pursuing your interests first. She tried it, approaching Fenrik that afternoon.

Julien @ Deep Groove Records Richmond, VA

Over the weekend, I stopped by Deep Groove (well, the alley next to Deep Groove) to catch a performance by Julien Baker.

I stayed near the back so I could make sure the bike I was too lazy to lock up didn’t roll away, and I’m so happy I stood there. We did miss out on quieter moments, but Baker’s voice emerged clear and resonant and triumphant again and again, and it turned into this incredibly inspiring group experiment in active listening. During songs, people were silent. Cars drove by and the wind picked up here and there, but none of the humans assembled to see Baker made a sound while she sang. It was inspiring.

The quieter moments helped me soak in what I was seeing, from the gentle slope of the alley to the way Baker’s expressions grew more pronounced the further into songs she got. It was like a cycle — the song would build, the lyrics would overwhelm, and those of us in the back would hear the climactic words loud and clear. It’s amazing how smooth and consistent those loudest notes were. Even though they delivered the most emotional words, her singing was as steady as it could have been. That alchemy that turns turmoil into strength via music — she’s got it down.

"I think the fact that my troubles come across in my music, we apply to a demographic that feels like that. I have the same anxieties as everybody – like the same things that everyone worries about; social, sexual, financial, cultural. One of the things I need to be aware of is what's going on in the world all the time because regardless of whether I accept it or not – or whether people think I should accept it or not – I do have a lot of influence over a lot of people, so, I feel the obligation to understand concepts that are way more prevalent in culture whether it be feminism, racism, and stuff like that. I've always been a feminist, non-racist person, but I suppose I've never studied them as issues because I've never needed to – that's not being ignorant, that's being a white Western person from England. I feel a responsibility to be as socially responsible as possible and all of my anxieties are like what your anxieties are like. I don't walk around like ‘Matty from The 1975', nor do my friends treat me like that, and the girls that I get with – or the girl that I'm getting with – doesn't treat me as ‘Matty from The 1975'."
