I keep seeing that post about disney maybe not liking viewership numbers for series 14, but whether or not thats true, its not like, a big deal for the survival of the show, disney is a distribution partner, its not up to them whether or not the show continues, them deciding they're unhappy is really only going to affect the budget the show has. The only thing that matters for the survival of the show is how its doing for the bbc which

Doctor Who has always been good for the UK economy, especially in Wales, and has helped grow the welsh tv sctor as a whole (here is a document produced by the bbc in 2023 about Doctor Who's economic impact), while I have not checked this I would assume as the UK's public broadcaster, the bbc would take this into consideration when thinking about renewing the show

While I can't find specific evidence of this, Doctor Who is surely one of the biggest money makers for the bbc itself in terms of mechandise and liscensing sales, and pre disney deal in distribution rights, as it is popular world wide to an extent most drama's aren't

I would assume the bbc are much more concerned with viewing figures within the UK than they are with how Doctor Who might be performing on disney plus. While raw numbers have decreased (as they have been doing for like a decade since the tv landscape is changing and nothing these days performs like shows in 2008), if you actually look at how Doctor Who compares to other shows, especially other similar shows, its doing fine

the worst performing episode was still 24th for the week (Dot and Bubble), a week where Britain's Got Talent aired 6 times, Doctor Who was the top performer for Saturday, and was the top performing drama that week that wasn't a soap so this really was an outlier

the finale was 18th for the week overall, however the top 8 that week were all football matches, and the news actually made a showing above doctor who because we were like 10 days off the general election

ignoring soap operas, it was never out of the top 5 for dramas, and everything except Boom was in the top 3, as well as 3 episodes being in first

including soad operas Doctor Who was never outside the top 15, emerdale, eastenders, and coronation street, the three soap operas beating doctor who, air every week day, which is why they push other shows down so far

across all bbc programming it was never out of the top 10, everything other than dot and bubble (8th), Legend of Ruby Sunday (8th) and Empire of Death (10th) was in the top 5

and across all tv it was never out of the top 3 shows that aired on a saturday

say it with me now, Doctor Who is fine, its perfectly healthy. You and I may want a change behind the scenes, you and I may think the series overall was mid and the finale kind of sucked, but I'm relatively sure Doctor Who is not ending any time soon

have you had any luck with other series that are harry potter adjacent you could give your sister? Tales of earthsea, the terry Pratchett kids books, skullduggery pleasant, artimis foul, Percy Jackson, so and so forth? sorry for shooting in the dark and saying the obvious here, i hope you're able to get her into other things than JKR pigshit books.

She’s only seven so some stuff there’s a bit old for her. It’s difficult because she actually knows very little about harry potter and has seen some of the films I think? But probably not much because she’s very sensitive and easily scared and upset! Its a new thing and I fully think its just the abundance of mechandise and its place in the dominant culture that she’s into it, rather than a genuine affinity for it itself. I’m a prachett fan myself so will try that in due time. It mostly hinges on me being able to explain to my parents why it’s bad and thats really difficult for me. Because I hate conflict and my dads been like “anti cancel culture” or whatever quite recently (over blackface in shows and tried to start a huge argument with me about it) and it’s so complicated where to begin with that. I struggle to keep my cool over talking about this subject obviously bc it makes me really fucking angry. But also how to you explain to a child that this thing that everyone else is enjoying in her class is bad and the complex machinations of capitalism that lead up to her fun wizard movie giving support to a horrible woman???

Like oh by the way this thing you like and is ubiquitous in the culture so much as your CLASS is NAMED after her, is actually from the mind of someone who virilently hates and campaigns against the community your older brother is in but again is treated like completely normal...how can a 7 year old process that..I dont think she even understands that im trans lmao.

It just feels futile to fight against it because normal cis people are clearly completely oblivious to it .

I genuinely want to write a letter to her school but its the kind of thing that I feel like people would be like lol look at this social justice warrior getting angry over a name. Obviously it would take a lot of effort for me to try and write something like that and im just. Tired of it all. I dont know what I can do I feel powerless in this situation.
