Cadmus is known as the founder and the first king of Thebes, a powerful town in ancient times, close to Athens. He is also known as the man who brought the writing and the alphabet from the Phoenicians to the Greeks, and through the Greeks to the whole world. Cadmus killed a dragon who was the guard of a swatter spring near Thebes. The dragon was the son of Ares, the god of war and as a result, the house of Cadmus was cursed by Ares. After the death of many of their family members, Cadmus and his wife Harmonia retired to Illyria. When the Illyrians angered the gods and were to be punished, Zeus transformed Cadmus into a black snake.
