Submariner Summer 35
Do Not Go Gentle Into That #SubmarinerSummer part 35, Namor Nation. We are at a key moment, just like last time, just like next time. Momentous things are afoot. This time, we hail the LAST ISSUE of volume 1 of Tales to Astonish, #101! End of the line is a wonderful Hulk in Asgard cover
Tumblr media
Yes, Tales to Astonish ends here; Tales of Suspense ended as well. But more on that next time. Here at the End, we BEGIN a key story in Namor lore, that of the Man Called Destiny. It starts in the Title splash with Namor, sleeping, haunted by a nightmare...or is he?
Tumblr media
We have Archie Goodwin back on scripts, and Gene Colan back on art; nice. Adkins on inks and Simek on letters rounds out the creatives. Also, look at our lil' man sleep. Do you guys think his wings twitch when he's dreaming? I bet they do.
ANYway, the nightmare figure haunts him, taunts him, and apparently has been doing so since his trip to the ruins of Antarctic Atlantis. Thinking it might be a sign of the memories lost in his past amnesia, he sets off for Antartica again to explore if there might be more there
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But it isn't a Namor story unless he gets attacked. So, a pilot scared that Namor looks at him funny fires missiles at our Prince in flight; doesn't end well for the pilot or his plane, but Namor spares his life and goes on his way.
Bad.
Ass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the people of Atlantis mourn their city destroyed by a US submarine. They must now wander in search of a place safer from the surface. But, in their own words, as long as the blue skinned race survives, so does Atlantis; strong indigenous coding here for the Atlanteans
Tumblr media
And hell, they may have lost their city but not their fashion sense; Colan beautifully illustrates their sorrow and resolve and Lady Dorma absolutely SERVING here. Can't blame Warlord Seth for catching feelings for her as a new Atlantean tear-filled trail begins 👀
Tumblr media
For his part, the believed-dead Namor reaches Antarctica, and is compelled by he knows not what to follow a route to a hidden cave. And there he finds an ancient civilization and the ruins of their time-lost, frozen city!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, he also finds its icy guardian; or more specifically, it finds him. Namor makes short work of it, though, and it crashes through a wall leading to a fateful chamber...the chamber of A Man Called Destiny!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's the beginning of Namor's fateful clash with Destiny, here at the end of Tales to Astonish. The plot isn't the most sophisticated ever, but hinting at getting answers to Namor's amnesia is compelling, it was great to touch base with Atlantis, and Colan delivers Art™
So NEXT, we will have to see what Destiny holds for Namor, but it will no longer be in Tales to Astonish. She was a good ship, but she sails into the past. Also? It won't be tomorrow, I'm afraid, I shall be otherwise engaged. Lo siento 🙏
So probably Wednesday we shall cover: "Call Him Destiny...Or Call Him Death!"

Nov. 20, 2022Difficult GraceNYT Critic's Pick
The cellist Seth Parker Woods presented an evening-long, multimedia program titled “Difficult Grace” Saturday evening at the 92nd Street Y’s Kaufmann Concert Hall. It was the full staging’s world premiere, but, as Woods remarked, he had premiered a “nucleus version” in February 2020 in Seattle; the coronavirus lockdown gave him the opportunity to rework his concept into its current form.
Woods was already a cellist of prodigious technical gifts and sharp intellect. This program has stretched him even further into performing as a spoken word artist and singer as well as instrumentalist.
Aided by the choreographer and dancer Roderick George — a childhood friend from Houston — “Difficult Grace” was a feast for the ears, eyes and mind.
In one portion of Freida Abtan’s “My Heart Is a River,” the audience sees a prerecorded video projection of two dancers as Woods plays live in front of the screen. The dancing figures straddle a cello that they are reimagining as a boat. The performer in front — actually Woods himself, with dancer Tamzin O’Garro behind — is wielding the cello bow as an oar. It’s a marvelously apt metaphor: Woods is an artist rooted in classical music, but whose cello is a vehicle that takes him, and his concertgoers, on wide-ranging journeys.
The program included works by a large roster of composers, many of whom used electronic sound design as well as live acoustic cello: Fredrick Gifford, Monty Adkins, Nathalie Joachim, Abtan, Ted Hearne, Devonté Hynes and Pierre Alexandre Tremblay. (In addition to Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, who died in 2004.)
Gifford’s piece “Difficult Grace,” which lent its name to the entire program, included projected artwork by Barbara Earl Thomas and was inspired by Dudley Randall’s poetry. Regrettably, it was difficult to discern from the auditorium seats much of what Woods was saying during long spoken-word stretches. (Projected supertitles would be a welcome addition.) The same was true during Hearne’s work with an unprintable title, with texts by the poet Kemi Alabi. Within the most riveting section of Hearne’s piece, Woods sang and played R&B-flavored harmonies atop hip hop-inspired electronic beats.
Tumblr media
Each composer who used prerecorded cello and electronic sound design, sometimes with on-the-spot manipulations, did so to very different aesthetic ends. Woods performed two movements from Abtan’s piece (“Opening Out” and “Seeping In”), in which the electronics and the live cello swirled around each other in haunting, echoing duets. Adkins’s gentle, cinematographic “Winter Tendrils,’‘ accompanied by an equally warmhearted film by Zoë McLean, used electronics almost like an invisible string orchestra, framing Woods’s cello in lush, glowing harmonies.
The most overtly narrative work was Nathalie Joachim’s “The Race: 1915,” which used projected images from the artist Jacob Lawrence’s “Migration Series” and texts taken from The Chicago Defender, the Black newspaper that was founded in 1905 and urged Black Americans to move northward in what became the Great Migration. Joachim’s music alternated between busy, cyclical motion and periods of meditative, slow arcs.
The most traditionally “classical” piece during the evening was a technically demanding cello sonata written by Devonté Hynes, whom certain music-loving New Yorkers may recall from his recent stint opening for Harry Styles at Madison Square Garden.
The other fully acoustic work was the third movement from Perkinson’s “Lamentations: Black/Folk Song Suite for Solo Cello,” entitled “Calvary Ostinato.” Perkinson’s music evoked centuries of Black American music, between lavish pizzicato sections which called to mind the connections between the American banjo and West African plucked string instruments and bluesy slides from note to note.
The evening ended with a powerful duet between Woods and George dancing live onstage in Tremblay’s “asinglewordisnotenough 3 [invariant].” It’s a piece that crackles with nervous, coiled energy. Woods often attacked his strings with furious intensity, while George’s dancing combined solid muscularity and sinuous movements. Somehow, all of these emotional currents found a home inside Tremblay’s score.
Difficult Grace
Performed on Saturday at Kaufmann Concert Hall, Manhattan.

Seths Cut: My first Equip Expo rodeo
There are a few things that are certain in Pensacola that you will have to deal with at some point - tree removal and tree trimming. Before you hire a Tree Removal Pensacola company you should take into consideration before hiring a tree service company. Some of the things you should consider include: - The type of tree that needs to be removed - The size of the tree - The location of the tree - The condition of the tree If you are unsure about whether or not you need to hire a tree removal company, contact https://treeservicespensacola.com/tree-removal-pensacola/ for a consultation. We will be able to assess your situation and give you our professional opinion. A walk across the Big Four Bridge and a pizza from Parlour in Jeffersonville, Ind., has become a post-show tradition for LM EIC Seth Jones. If you have time to kill before your flight home following Equip Expo next year, you know where to find him — drinks are on him. (Photo: Seth Jones) I once again concluded my week in Louisville with a solo walk across the Big Four Bridge into Indiana. With a few hours to kill before my flight home, I grabbed a bar stool at Parlour and ordered a pizza, some of their smoked wings and a cold beer.  It was hard to get settled in and collect my thoughts about the week I just had at the inaugural Equip Expo. So much was packed into one week. It started on Tuesday with a media-only event at Churchill Downs hosted by Greenworks. It ended with a supply chain panel discussion that our magazine hosted, one of the 11 educational panels we put on at the show. In-between? Three super-memorable dinners (you know who you are). Dozens of meetings and presentations (some were better than others — you probably don’t know who you are). A firework show at Louisville Slugger Park. A selfie with Trace Adkins and reconnecting with David Feherty. And the cherry on top, 11 successful educational sessions hosted by my team at Landscape Management. Just … wow. Even the incredible pizza at Parlour couldn’t do the moment justice.  In this business … We’re in the business of providing education and insights to our readers, but this was the first time we were asked by an entity like Equip Expo to be their exclusive magazine partner presenting educational seminars at their event. By the end of the show, my team and I addressed almost 1,200 people hungry to learn from our network of industry experts. I said this many times when people asked me how the show was going … it was our first Equip Expo in name only. But in terms of what we were doing at the show? It really was our first rodeo, and I’m happy the bull didn’t buck us. In fact, my team stepped up so much that we are already making plans for how we can make 2023 bigger and better. A 5-star week My first joke of the week may have flopped (“Welcome to the Trace Adkins fan club panel!” — might have been a little too early in the morning for that one), but otherwise, I felt like just about everything went smoothly. OK, my lunch with LM columnist Jeffrey Scott almost ended in disaster when a rolling cart of salads toppled over right behind me. But everything else was just about perfect. Come to think of it, my 2022 Equip Expo experience didn’t really end with that panel about the supply chain. It ended with me trying to get an Uber from Parlour in southern Indiana to the Louisville airport. It turned out a Friday night Luke Combs concert had the city in an uproar and a fierce traffic jam. When my Uber driver finally pulled up, he told me, “Bro, I almost didn’t accept your ride. But I saw you were trying to get to the airport, you have a 5-star rating and my guess is you’ll pay the toll over the bridge to save us both time … and you probably tip.” I laughed and told him that after the 5-star week I just had, no traffic jam was about to slow us down.  The post Seth’s Cut: My first Equip Expo rodeo appeared first on Landscape Management.

Final fantasy wild dose

#Final fantasy wild dose movie
Of course, if you’re only here for the kick-ass fight scenes, this might not bother you at all, as you should be left satisfied by the wild gunplay, one-to-one combat, and acrobatic stunt work. It’s easy to forget the weaknesses in the narrative when the action kicks in but when the end credits start to roll, you might begin to wonder why more wasn’t done to delve into the mythology of LA’s bloodthirsty denizens. Little effort has been made to explore the background of the vampires and it’s hard to understand why some of them fight on the side of good while others fight on the side of evil. Overall, Day Shift is very entertaining but as suggested, the screenplay is a little flawed. His banter with Foxx about the highlights of the Twilight movies is particularly funny, even if it is a little hard to believe that either of them would be such big fans of the moribund franchise.
#Final fantasy wild dose movie
You see, while the action is good, it does get a little wearying, so it’s good that Franco is given the room to balance out the movie with his witty one-liners and moments of physical comedy. As the bookish and perpetually fearful Seth, he lights up the screen whenever he appears, and the movie would have been far less entertaining without him. While Foxx and Adkins manage to impress on the action front, Franco ably gives the funniest performance in the movie. Adkins has rarely been given decent movie roles but in Day Shift, he has finally been given the opportunity to show what he is made of, not only as a fighter but also as an actor. Perry delivers many exhilarating fight scenes, as well as one excellent car chase sequence, and these do much to paper over the weaknesses inherent in the movie’s script (more on this in a moment).įoxx ably showcases his skills as an action star in the making (somebody give him a John Wick-style movie) although he is slightly overshadowed by martial arts experts Scott Adkins (starring as one half of rival vampire hunters, the Nazarian brothers), who gets to kick and punch his way through one particularly entertaining scene when he, Bud, and the rest of their group, are besieged by bloodsuckers. And see it you should, especially if you’re a fan of vampire movies that contain heavy doses of action. Well, there will be no spoilers here as you will just have to see the movie for yourself. Bud isn’t happy about this, more so because Seth has no field training and is prone to peeing his pants when in the presence of vampires, but in true buddy movie fashion, this chalk and cheese pairing do learn to get along eventually, even though Seth proves to be quite the liability to Bud’s vampire-busting.ĭoes Bud manage to keep his job without breaking any more union rules? Does Seth manage to keep his head in the face of danger? Does Snoop Dog manage to make it through the movie without rolling a single joint? To make sure he does play by the rules, Ralph assigns accounts clerk and union member Seth (Dave Franco) to be his partner. With his livelihood on the line, Bud promises to be more responsible but it’s only when fellow vampire slayer Big John (the reliably cool Snoop Dog) intervenes that he is allowed to keep his job. He is doing this so he can earn money for his daughter’s tuition but his unusual career is threatened when his profession’s union head Ralph Seeger accuses him of breaking union rules. During their encounter, he blasts her across the living room with his pump-action shotgun, not because she has refused to pay him for cleaning her pool but because she is a vampire and he is a vampire hunter.Īfter a well-choreographed battle with this granny, in which she manages to be far more sprightly than we could ever expect, we then get to see Bud lay waste to other vampires in the San Fernando Valley. We realise this when he stops what he is doing, walks into a house, and confronts the little old lady who lives inside. An action-comedy worth sinking your teeth intoĭay Shift opens with working-class family man Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) cleaning out a swimming pool but despite his guise as a pool cleaner, this isn’t actually his real job.

Day Shift is a new Netflix original film about a vampire hunter who, like everyone else, is just trying to make ends meet so he can care for his daughter. This action-packed comedy appears to be slick and entertaining, making it yet another potential smash for the streaming behemoth. Watch The Video © 2022 @Netflix What is the story of Day Shift? The official synopsis for Netflix's Day Shift is as follows: "Jamie Foxx stars as a hardworking blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted daughter, but his mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his true source of income, hunting and killing vampires as a member of an International Union of Vampire Hunters." If you aren't already a subscriber, you can quickly sign up by clicking the link below. Day Shift was directed by who? Day Shift is J.J. Perry's directorial debut. While he is a newbie behind the camera, if you like action movies, you've probably seen his work before. Since the late 1980s, Perry has worked as a stuntman. Day Shift (2022) review
Plot: A hardworking dad (Jamie Foxx) out to provide for his daughter uses a boring pool-cleaning job as a front for his real gig: hunting and killing vampires.
Grade: B
Overall, I liked it. The lead is compelling and likable enough to root for. Plot is conveyed well-enough without getting confusing. Action is well-done with a highlight being a scene featuring the Nazarian brothers (Steve Howey, Scott Adkins) at the halfway point. The hints of worldbuilding are interesting even if I would have liked to see more. Humor was a little hit or miss, exemplified by the character of Seth (Dave Franco). Mostly just a goofy fun movie.
You can probably guess from the trailer if it's for you or not.

Submariner Summer 33
Mira mira time for #SubmarinerSummer read through. Today on part 33, we have Tales to Astonish #99: When Falls The Holocaust! A hell of a Hulk cover, but we're not here for that. Title splash pose for Namor in the ruins a US submarine has made of Atlantis, and a dramatic recap
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Atlantis' fleet is off to retaliate, but Namor isn't happy left out. A complete turnover of the creative team for Namor this ish, with Archie Goodwin as writer and Dan Adkins on art, and Gaspar Saldino lettering. Not unfamiliar names but an odd time for a total changeover
Namor knows he needs to prove himself to prove his innocence, but is still too weak to keep up with the ships. However, they then launch a special untested experimental weapon, the Hurricane Inducer, that Namor is afraid might backfire so he determines he has to stop it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As an aside, I do wonder if the Hurricane Inducer is somehow based on the weapon Attuma tried to use to destroy Atlantis.
Meanwhile, the US sub that trashed Atlantis smugly heads away, when they detect the Atlantean fleet in pursuit. Unable to take them on they flee instead, trying to use the undersea terrain to their advantage, impressing even the Atlanteans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Under command of Warlord Seth, the Atlanteans manage to turn their ships so as to not crash and decide to wait for the Hurricane Inducer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of which, Namor manages to break into the ship which carries the Inducer, trying to do as little harm as possible. He's forced to knock out a couple of guards before making his way to the room that houses it, only to discover it's already been set in motion!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Namor's only choice is destroy it before it has a chance to go off. To his people, this is just more proof he's turned traitor and they try to stop him. The Inducer and ship are now doomed, though, so the crew all begin to abandon ship. Seth sends the fleet back to rescue the crew.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now the lives of not just one ship's crew but the whole fleet are in the balance if everyone is caught in the Inducer's explosion. So as the rescue is undertaken Namor desperately pilots the ship away behind the undersea mountain before escaping, thus saving the fleet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warlord Seth realizes Namor must have saved them, calling him a traitor, a hero, an enigma, and a Prince. Truer words. Meanwhile the US sub doesn't understand what happened, but are happy to leave since the explosion turned the Atlanteans away. But Namor's dilemma remains
Tumblr media
A dramatic conclusion to the Plunderer Arc, and I always like seeing the Atlantean Navy in action. Namor is now considered dead by Atlantis even as it lies in ruins, while he himself feels he has to prove that he did not betray them through action against the surface. Goodwin and Adkins really brought the tale home.
And boy will it lead to action; get ready for one of the great superhero battle issues of all time as we finally get THEE Tales To Astonish crossover of Namor and Hulk NEXT in Tales to Astonish #100: Let There Be Battle!
