Borders and Boundaries; Fences and Walls
Definition of BOUNDARY (plural boundaries)
1)      something that indicates or fixes a limit or extent
2)      a point or limit that indicates where two things become different
3)      something that points out or shows a limit or end : a dividing line
Central to the theme of Catherine Trieschmann’s new play One House Over is the idea of boundaries or borders. You will see or sense borders of generations, of neighborhoods, of the sexes, of the healthy vs. the ill, of class, of worker/employer, of race, and of legal status. The theme of crossing or respecting boundaries is a common theme for theater. The Rep has produced many plays that reveal and confront the boundaries that divide us.

One House Over Director Mark Clements discusses the physical and emotional boundaries he sees in the play.
In One House Over, Camila and Rafa have come to work for and live with Joanne and her father Milos.  They are undocumented and have great fears of being discovered. Studies have shown that undocumented workers tend to not report crimes of which they are victims or witnesses for fear of being asked for papers. According to Fortune Magazine, many undocumented immigrants refused to even take shelter from Hurricane Irma under evacuation orders and many don’t get medical attention until it is an emergency for the same reason. Some of these fears play a major part in the climax of One House Over.
The borders of class and race are represented vividly in Alfred Uhry’s Driving Miss Daisy.  The front seat is a literal barrier between the wealthy Jewish Miss Daisy and the poor African American Hoke.

As the play progresses the distinctions between the two lessen as both experience racial prejudice and the humiliation of aging.  When Miss Daisy tells Hoke he cannot pull over to “make water,” he at first honors the class code, but then asserts his rights as a person and stops the car.  When the synagogue is bombed, both sit in horror understanding that they both have been victims of the same race prejudice. When Miss Daisy has a bad morning reliving a moment from her past, Hoke warns her what will happen to her if she doesn’t pull it together-the old folks home.  As she comes back to normal she says “You’re my best friend.” Borders fall down as understanding and tolerance are built up.

In August Wilson’s Fences, the character Bono states, “Some people build fences to keep people out and other people build fences to keep people in.”  Rose fights to keep her family together and her desire to have the fence built is symbolic of how important it is for her.  She sees the broadening fissure between her son, Cory, and her husband Troy and also is suspect of Troy’s time spent out of her purview.  She thinks if she has him build the fence, it will keep him occupied and imprisoned. Eventually, Troy fractures the sacred bonds of marriage, and he is kept out of Rose’s yard.

In Joanna Murray-Smith’s American Song, Andy, the father of a boy who shot up his high school, builds a stone wall against the pain and suffering he feels.

Song is what closes the divide between the two disparate characters in Frank Higgins’ Black Pearl Sings!(on stage now in the Stackner Cabaret).

In Ayad Akhtar’s The Invisible Hand, the boundaries of imprisonment of one character are obvious.  The clash of cultures and religions eventually come down and then are rebuilt with the characters switching sides in ideology and faith.

One House Over tackles other issues of boundaries as well.  Joanne hires outside help because her idea of boundaries between her and her aging father are too transparent.  She needs a barrier between the physical needs of her father and the father she wants to remember. Bringing in live-in helps also means the boundaries of comfort might be taxed.  Joanne becomes aware of the fact that she is no longer alone in her own home.  There might be someone in her yard when she wants to relax, or she might hear talking below from Rafa and Camila, the couple who move in to help her father.  Camila and Rafa have to adjust as well by monitoring their music and possibly their attire lest they annoy their employer above. With a father aged and ill and her own serious diagnosis, Joanne faces the ultimate and final boundary which may soon be crossed forever.
Boundaries and the respect-or disrespect-for them make stunning theater. It is hard to think of a play that doesn’t, in some way, deal with the theme of borders and boundaries.  Be sure to catch the World Premiere of Catherine Trieschmann’s One House Over when it opens in less than two weeks in our Quadracci Powerhouse and see just what boundaries are crossed.
