CNN Philippines, the country's predominantly English-language news channel, has announced that it will discontinue operations this week. This decision marks the end of nearly a decade of delivering news and public affairs programming. It is disheartening to witness the departure of such a valuable source of information and insight.
Since its inception in 2015, it has kept the public informed and engaged. By offering news in both English and local languages like Cebuano (delivered by Menchu Antigua and UP Speech Communication alumna Patricia Fernandez) and Kapampangan (rendered by Helen Nicolette Henson), it has reached a wider audience across many regions. This dedication to inclusivity and accessibility has undoubtedly contributed to the channel's relative popularity and influence.
As someone interviewed by CNN Philippines on several occasions, I can attest to the professionalism and dedication of the network's past and present staff, on and off camera. Their commitment to articulating news and issues has been frequently commendable. Shows like REAL TALK, hosted by former Olympic swimmer Christine Jacobs-Sandejas, and UP magna cum laude graduates Shamcey Supsup-Lee (architecture) and Giselle Sanchez (mass communication), have provided a platform for insightful discussions and diverse perspectives.
The impact of CNN Philippines on the media landscape cannot be overstated. Through its comprehensive coverage and diverse programming, I felt it had nurtured an informed audience and fostered meaningful public discourse. The channel's departure leaves a void that many will surely feel.

Baguio to host Ms. Universe-Philippines 2020
#PHnews: Baguio to host Ms. Universe-Philippines 2020
BAGUIO CITY – The city and the province of Benguet will host the Miss Universe Philippines 2020 on Oct. 25, but without an audience.
Some 50 candidates will vie for a slot in the beauty pageant, as well as Miss International, among others, as they start to arrive in batches for the pre-pageant shoots up to the coronation on October 25 amid the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the candidates and the organizing staff, chaperons, and the crew of the covering television network started to arrive.
Magalong, in a press conference on Wednesday, said all of them must first test negative for Covid-19.
“There will be no audience, but the pageant on October 25 will be covered live by an undisclosed television outfit,” the mayor said in a press conference also attended by BLISTT (Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba and Tublay) Tourism Council president Gladys Vergara, Baguio Country Club General Manager Anthony de Leon, and Baguio City Tourism officer Engr. Aloysius Mapalo.
De Leon said that minimum health protocols will be observed before and during the pageant and the coronation night.
He assured that the resort is enforcing strict safety protocols, which will be implemented in the 11-day event until the coronation.
Upon their arrival and release of a negative swab test result, the candidates will have a photoshoot at the Strawberry Fields in La Trinidad, Benguet. They will then proceed to the Baguio Country Club where all other activities in relation to the pageant will be held.
The Baguio Country Club will be the host of the event for the first time but in a controlled environment where only candidates, organizers and staff, and the television crew will be present.
The month of October started the easing of tourist restriction in the city as it welcomed visiting residents of Region 1.
Vergara said the pageant participants will not visit the city parks and there will be no encounter with the locals as part of the precautionary health measure.
“They will be confined at the Baguio Country Club and all activities will happen here, except the initial photoshoot to be held at the Strawberry Farm,” she said.
Miss Universe-Philippines Director Shamcey Supsup-Lee, in a recorded audio message played during the press conference, said she is happy to have the pageant hosted at the Baguio Country Club. (PNA)

Pedro ‘n Coi Celebrates Third Anniversary Party
Pedro ‘n Coi recently celebrated its third year of bringing Pinoy pop culture on our plates. This fun and entertaining casual Filipino dining concept is the personal passion project of businessman Lloyd Lee and his architect and beauty queen wife, Shamcey Supsup. From their first branch in Fisher Mall in 2015, Pedro ‘n Coi has now expanded to several key cities in Metro Manila, together with the addition of new brands such as Tambayan ni Pedro and the newly-relaunched Scott Burger PNC.
The festive third anniversary party was held last June 14, 2018 at the newest branch of Pedro ‘n Coi located on the fourth level of Newport Mall in Resorts World Manila. It was actually a triple party that afternoon because they were also celebrating the birthday of Lloyd Lee plus the much-awaited Gender Reveal for the couple’s second baby.
Pedro ‘n Coi brings elements of classic Pinoy culture with a dash of playful nostalgia. Their Pinoy Pop Chibog is a fun and delicious way of reminiscing about Philippine pop culture. Guests can take a funky trip down memory lane while enjoying a good Filipino meal.
So who exactly is Pedro and Coi? These two “Komics” characters are based on the personalities of its two owners. Pedro is derived from the middle name of Lloyd which is Peter while Coi is Shamcey’s nickname. The entire restaurant is filled with nostalgic decor from the childhood memories of the couple, like Lloyd playing on the urban streets of Manila.
Shamcey also patterned some of the restaurant design after their family house in General Santos opening to a view of their rice farm. Diners can also notice Pedro ‘n Coi’s very own sari-sari store which Lloyd’s grandmother used to have during his younger years.
Pedro 'n Coi has its own unique style of open kitchen with this carinderia counter, but their food is definitely not like these street side eateries. The restaurant serves classic and re-invented Filipino dishes with amusing pop-culture inspired names like “Sisig-awww!,” “Joey de Lechon,” “Tunog Kalye,” and more. Food portions are good for sharing and best enjoyed with the company of friends and family.
The main attraction at each Pedro ‘n Coi branch would be the opportunity to ride and eat inside a genuine 1978 Sarao Jeep while taking in the sights of old Manila on a hand-painted mural dedicated to Pinoy life and culture.
These are always the first seats that get taken by guests because it is really the best way to soak in all the Pinoy culture and ambiance. Kids will love having their meals inside this jeepney.
Guests can start with any of Pedro ‘n Coi’s refreshing coolers, shakes, and beverages like Dan's Dalandan (P60) iced tea or the Luis Mansanan cooler.
For appetizers, the Ubod Hubad (P165) is a good and healthy way to start your meal. This has bamboo shoots in rice wrapper together with mangoes, cucumber, cabbage, and sweet potato.
If you are hungry for merienda, then go for the This is it Pancit (P210) with a huge bowl of stir fried egg noodles and glass noodles topped with scrambled egg.
One of the specialties at Pedro ‘n Coi is their Sizzling Sisig Awww! (P285) which is served with an actual scream and shout! This Filipino favorite comes with baked porkloin topped with poached egg and garlic-miso sauce.
The items on the menu are really quite interesting with names like Belly Flores (P280) which has steamed bangus belly in a special sauce.
Another one is the Inasal Raymundo (P250) which is a baked savory chicken fillet that is finished over the grill.
A constant bestseller at the restaurant is the Joey De Lechon (P360) with its baked and deep fried pork belly that comes with five different sauces for the entire family.
More porky goodness comes our way with the Pata Kang Kare-Kare Ka (P795). This huge serving has deep fried baked pork knuckles served with kare kare peanut sauce and homemade bagoong (shrimp paste). The skin is absolutely crispy and this is how a kare-kare should always be presented.
What made the afternoon more special was the triple celebration of Lloyd’s birthday as well as the gender reveal for their second baby, after their firstborn daughter, Nyke. The big revelation was made when the couple cut open the Pedro ‘N Coi cake and it had blue colored slices. That means a boy for the lovely couple!
Family bonding moments and get-togethers are truly made more special at Pedro ‘n Coi. Congratulations to Lloyd and Shamcey for three fabulous years of Pedro ‘n Coi and for your new baby boy.
