Part II, Day 27
Tumblr media
A list of all 23 jobs I’ve held so far:
1. Mowing grass for the farmer John Wolters, who often paid me in 1930s-era silver certificates.
2. Detasseling and de-roguing corn for Oetting's Detasseling. Rural kid summer job, hot and tiresome.
3. Clean-up guy at Orly's Meat Market, Locker, and Deli. I cleaned the whole bloody place.
4. Sales representative at Dumont Telemarketing. Yes, I was a telemarketer, and I’m sorry.
5. Hired hand at Schmadeke's Feed Mill, one of the grain elevators in my rural Iowa hometown. So much dust.
6. Soldier in the Iowa National Guard, where I had the opportunity to work security for the circus and qualify as an expert on the grenade launcher. (Not at the same time, though.)
7. Pizza technician at Pizza Hut, where I made pizzas. Curious to know how much free root beer I drank there.
8. Summer park technician at Butler County Conservation. For two summers I got to help keep the parks trimmed and tidy.
9. Trash man at Iowa State University. Picked up trash around my dorm, and it was trashy.
10. Food service dishwasher at the University of Northern Iowa. No. Just no.
11. Weekend on-air talent and assistant music director at KUNI-FM, a public radio station. Still one of my favorite jobs ever.
12. Retailer and vinyl record specialist at Co-Op Records. The discount was large and the subsequent paychecks were small.
13. Content manager at Stayhealthy dot com, where I participated in the Dotcom boom and garnered my first tech layoff.
14. Assistant manager at the Sam Goody music store in a mall, almost the exact opposite of the cool indie record store above.
15. Receptionist at Public Radio International. Get a foot in the door, they say. I did, and it really kicked things off.
16. Client Relations Manager at Public Radio International. I sold programs and an early SaaS CMS to stations.
17. Senior Manager, Interactive Content and Marketing. Got to work with Ira Glass, Bob Edwards, and the BBC. Met Slash in an elevator.
18. Content Strategist at Brain Traffic. Got to work with THE Kristina Halvorson, which was fantastic.
19. Sr. Manager, Digital Content Strategy at Ameriprise Financial. The on-page disclosures were really something: 4,000+ words on one!
20. Vice President of Web Content Strategy at Weber Shandwick. Agency life, all of the clients, and amazing bosses.
21. Sr. Content Designer at Shopify. Content design, commerce, and cool co-workers.
22. Staff Content Designer at Shopify. A promotion to be proud of! Such a well-oiled content team there. (Miss y’all, still!)
23. Content Designer at Cash App. Easily the hippest colleagues ever.

Wild, Irish rock star, Greg Booker was just fourteen when he learned how precious life was
From that day onward, he swore to live each day as if it was his last, filled with adventure, and to accept whatever happened during his life journey as some kind of divine intervention.
Despite being a musician in a world famous band, a rock star romance had so far evaded him. And although his fans and bandmates had grown used to his reckless, impulsive antics no one was prepared for what happened during a well-earned weekend break in Las Vegas.
When an unexpected event involving Greg took place, he sees it as a sign that this was meant to be, leaving most of his bandmates speechless. When Levi finally finds his voice, he offers Greg advice.
Can Greg accept Levi's guidance, or will he continue on the path he feels life has chosen for him?

HSBC UK has made all its branches a “Safe Space” where people experiencing domestic abuse can take their first step to financial independence by seeking specialist advice and support. Professional training has been provided to more than 4000 employees across all HSBC UK branches.
Financial abuse frequently goes hand-in-hand with domestic abuse and can be used as a tool to trap a person and render them even more powerless by taking control of their finances.
Wunderman Thompson’s latest campaign for the brand carries the message, “When an abuser controls your finances, they control you,” and raises awareness of the Safe Spaces scheme by showing the shocking link between financial and domestic abuse. The campaign is part of a wider awareness drive to the ways the bank can help them regain financial independence and take back control of their lives.
HSBC UK’s existing “No Fixed Address” service, which allows people without a permanent address to open an account, can also help people experiencing financial abuse who have escaped their circumstances but do not yet have a permanent residence.
The charity Surviving Economic Abuse revealed that 95% of domestic abuse cases include a form of economic abuse but, shockingly, 69% of people have never viewed the two as related, even though without access to money and the things that money can provide, it is difficult to leave an abuser and find a safe place to live.
To support people experiencing financial abuse, HSBC UK is continuing to invest in its ‘No Fixed Address’ service.
Working with Shelter and other charities, the bank has helped over 2,700 people, with the service championed through the award-winning campaign, ‘Vicious Circle’, also developed by Wunderman Thompson.
HSBC UK have made all their branches Safe Spaces, supporting domestic abuse charity Hestia's UK SAYS NO MORE campaign. The safe spaces are open to everyone, whether or not they are an HSBC customer.
The nationwide campaign helps to raises awareness of the struggles faced by those experiencing financial abuse, explaining that a lack of access to funds or not having a bank account should never be a barrier to escaping an abusive relationship.
The campaign goes live across out-of-home, supported by an impactful ‘live’ billboard in Spitalfields Market 14th-15th June, dramatizing the campaign message with a performer being controlled by strings on the billboard.
Sarah Mayall, Head of Brand Marketing at HSBC UK said: “Escaping an abusive relationship isn’t as simple as walking out of the door. We’re proud to be playing a part in helping people experiencing abuse to take a step towards financial independence by accessing a Safe Space with HSBC UK. Through this campaign we hope to raise awareness of the service and the shocking link between domestic and economic abuse.”
Mike Watson, Creative Director at Wunderman Thompson UK, said: “Having worked with HSBC UK on the Vicious Circle campaign and seen the impact that’s had on so many real people, we’re proud to work on this latest campaign in support of people experiencing financial abuse.  The bold creative execution, paired with the shocking stats around economic abuse, aims to convey the level of control that the abuser holds over their victims.”

Day 63
Tumblr media
I joined Twitter in 2007. And Threads in 2023.
I first learned about Twitter not online, but over the shoulder of a fellow attendee at the Beyond Broadcast meeting at MIT in February 2007. This person, seated ahead of me in the auditorium was typing short messages in a field and hitting enter. I jotted down the Twitter url and signed up when I got back home to my desktop computer.
The image on this post shows that, ironically, my first tweet was simply, "workin'." It's funny now that I am actually looking for a job.
I can say with confidence that Twitter played a role in my landing a job at four companies.
The first one was more of a promotion while I was working at PRI Public Radio International. I moved from the client relations team to the newly-created Senior Manager, Interactive Marketing role. I stood up the social channels, created a content strategy around them (one of my first!), and ran their first online/social fund drive.
As I rode the wave of Twitter, my bon mots and content strategy tweets caught the attention of the both the #contentstrategy followers and the local interactive marketing scene. I made important connections with Kristina Halvorson (who would later be my boss at Brain Traffic), Greg Swan (who would recruit me to be VP of Content Strategy at Weber Shandwick), and Kris Mausser (who would refer me to Shopify). I met them all in the prime of Twitter.
I just looked, and I've sent over 18,000 tweets. Most of them were prior to the pandemic, at which point my interest in tweeting waned. As things got strange with Twitter's purchase last year, I've lost any remaining interest in what was once a thriving community. I always referred to Twitter as, "a place where I can make silly jokes to spare my wife." It used to be fun. Now it's not.
Then Threads launched yesterday. I signed up, feeling that same rush of adrenaline we all used to when we'd all pile on a new social offering in order to secure our beloved usernames on a fresh platform. They've almost all come and gone. I still get emails from Ello. I found a notebook this week that had a to-do list entry of sharing something on Google+. Every channel since has felt fleeting.
I looked at my Threads feed, and it looked familiar. I saw some old friends on there. But I didn't feel compelled to post. Not even a silly remark, as was part of the Twitter fun back in the day. It just made me tired. And not for the reason you might think.
As the job search rolls on, we job seekers ask ourselves, "Am I doing enough?" (The answer is probably yes.) But a new field asking me to start a thread feels like another hungry hopper waiting for the content. If I were to start posting on Threads when it's fresh, maybe I could get a leg up, get that next job sooner, jump the queue. (The answer is probably no.)
It's there, on my phone.

★✩★ RELEASE BLITZ ★✩★ Until Korry PULSETUNES ROCK GODS Book 4 By K.L. Shandwick Genre | Trope: Contemporary Romance | Rockstar Romance | Second chance | Marriage pact Hosted by DS Book Promotions
One minute I was that uncool kid who hated piano lessons.
The next, a high school dropout, playing in a start-up band.
A year later, that band, ‘Screaming Shadows’ was one of the biggest in the world.
Life was phenomenal apart from my one regret. That I never had the guts to tell my best friend, Blaire Hutton my true feelings about her.
As we grew up, I believed Blaire was my soulmate, but as she was every teenage guy’s wet dream, I stayed her nerdy school friend.
That was until the night before I headed out on my first big tour when I’d kissed her goodbye and she’d jokingly made a pact, that if we were both still single by thirty, she’d give up and marry me instead.
For a decade I’d held on to that pact, and with each year that passed I became convinced she would wait for me. But I’ve just heard at twenty-nine she was getting hitched… and it wasn’t to me.
My dilemma is, do I want her? Would she want me?? Should I go home and try to claim what I’ve grown to believe is mine, or am I delusional to think we should ever be together in the first place?
