unpopular opinion: Ikki isn't as tough as everyone thinks, but fakes it until he makes it. (LMAO his birthday is one day before mine so I just gonna self project a bit).

Reflection of the Neglected Reality

MacArthur is a novel with a combination of comedy and neglected reality here in the Philippines. A group of friends named Cyrus, Voltron, Jim, and Noel. All of them are deprived and not wealthy. Cyrus is the youngest member in the group, and he is good at stealing, doing strategies and has a lot of criminal records. Amadeus Denver Kantuyan, better known as Voltron is the skinny robot-looking person in the story and has suffered a lot compared to the other members. Jim is the oldest member in the group at the age of 23 years old. He has a family to feed. Noel is a college student that came from a middle-class family and stopped studying due to financial problems. The struggles of Filipino youth in dealing with the issues of today such as drugs and vices, unemployment, education, and family expectations. The novel is notable for applying a bold and realistic look at life in a Philippine community. Roberto “Bob” Ong, is a contemporary Filipino author born in February 1975 in Quezon City. He was known for his pseudonym “Bob Ong ” that came from a follower of his satire website from the ’90s called ‘Bobong Pinoy’ that mistook him for a certain ‘BobOng.’ Bob Ong. BobOng Pinoy, it was uncanny, he stated. He was also known for his conversational writing technique, creating humorous and reflective depictions of Philippine life. In 2001, Bob Ong published his first book entitled “ABNKKBSNPLAKO,” it is said to be the book that closely states his life story as he frankly retells his student days in a way that could make any person laugh while reading. After 16 years, he has published nine outstanding and insightful books entitled – “Bakit Baliktad Magbasa ng Libro ang mga Pilipino?”, “Ang Paboritong Libro ni Hudas”, “Alamat ng Gubat”, “Stainless Longganisa”, “Macarthur”, “Kapitan Sino”, “Ang mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan”, “Lumayo Ka Nga Sa Akin”, and “Si”. There is no such thing as right or wrong decision, it already depends on how other people perceive it, is the main concern of MacArthur. This can be observed throughout the novel with how the main characters made their decisions in every struggle they encounter.

Given the scenario when Noel stole Lyla’s stethoscope. Lyla was wearing her uniform, then she couldn’t find her stethoscope. Lyla knew that Noel had stolen it. Noel stole the stethoscope because he wanted to sell it to buy drugs for his vices while Lyla needs it for her nursing course. In the following few parts, it is shown that both Noel and Lyla are arguing and choosing their decision because of their situation. Before she said the quote, Noel’s mom kept calling him to eat because it was almost time for lunch, but he still hadn’t eaten breakfast. In front of Noel’s room was Lyla’s. She was already wearing her uniform and getting ready for school. Lyla then noticed that her stethoscope was missing and immediately knew that Noel had stolen it from her. Lyla started banging and shouting at Noel’s door, forcing him to return it back to her, but he denied stealing the stethoscope. Lyla went through Noel’s bag, and it turns out Noel had already sold it. “Kinuha nyan ang stethoscope ko.” (argument between Noel and Lyla). The reason why Noel took the stethoscope and sold it was because of his situation, Lyla on the other hand, needs it too for her studies. In their eyes, it is the right decision to argue so they will be able to get what they need. Everyone has priorities and things that are important to them which cause them to make decisions that seem to be the right choices, even if a part of their decision would not result in any good outcome. These choices satisfy them and let people live their lives the way they desire it to be.

“If I had only been given the chance to change my life.“ The group of four friends wanted to change their life, but they lacked hope. Their habits cannot be changed since they have chosen their path. Education is not the answer to a successful life. There are many educated people, but not everyone was given a chance to live a good life. Cyrus mentioned having a new life with his friends, but one of his friends disagreed since he had already tried and failed to change his bad habits. Cyrus wondered whether his life would have been different if he had only been given a chance to study. Would he and his grandfather live a happier and better life? Then Noel answered that not everyone who has studied has a successful life. Jim had thought of selling movie discs as their business after their conversation. To improve their situation, they all agreed that selling movie discs was a good idea. The friends celebrated their success in selling their movie discs. They were at the same place where Voltron’s mom was drinking alcoholic beverages. Aling Seding was the one who was talking about the child that she had sent to study. Her dialogue "Etong si Denver , tong batang to pinag- aral ko dati, sa sabungan naman pala tumutuloy, sabi ko huminto ka na lang wala ka namang pakinabang! hahahahaha!” is an evidence in which the thesis statement that was formulated by the students were connected. Denver was given the chance to go to school but he still chose to go to the cockpit. This proves the thesis statement itself that the choices people make will affect the situation they are in. The future of oneself depends on the person. If the person does not want their life to succeed, their choice will lead them to their end. No matter how hard the person forces themselves to study hard, if the person is not determined enough, they will not be able to achieve success. Being successful is not based on education. It is the person’s will and devotion that will lead them to victory. It is always the person’s choice that will lead them to the path that they have decided.

Voltron was last seen having a conversation with Edwin and his colleagues. Voltron died due to being beheaded, and Edwin might be the one behind this. Edwin is a popular hoodlum known for offering illegal tasks that were so cruel that no one can imagine. The jobs he offers are for those who want to earn large amounts of money quickly but darkly. During that time, Voltron needed cash to survive his daily life. So to obtain what he needed, he sought Edwin for help. This suggests why Edwin was behind all of his death. Knowing Edwin’s capabilities, Voltron primarily did not want to seek help. However, his problems seem to lead him back to Edwin. “O,” kumuha ng higit limang libong piso si Jules sa mga perang pinapatungan ng telephone directory sa mesa. “Pamasahe!” “Hehe!” abot tenga ang ngiti ni Voltron. “Pasko na!” “(a conversation between Jules and Voltron) In connection to the statement, Voltron sees Edwin as his only opportunity to escape from his complications.

Noel’s decision was the best initial step to start a new life. In his situation at that moment, it was the most applicable decision he could make. It can be noticed that he chose to go home, did not feel bothered with how the community would perceive his decision and the way his father forgave him. Due to being accused as a thief, Noel reacted violently. As a result, Mang Fred or Noel’s father drove him out of their house, so he had to stay in his friend’s house for a short period of time. Noel was the only one left out of the four friends, so he felt urged to go back home. He doubted in the beginning. However, once he stepped home, Mang Fred whispered and invited him to eat breakfast. Which meant at the end of the day, his father decided to forgive him. “Kumain ka na.” By the time he goes out, the individuals around him could criticize how Noel was driven out of the house. It proves the thesis statement in a way where Noel made a decision to go home and did not feel troubled with how the society would perceive his decision. Since Noel was the only one left after Voltron was executed, Cyrus was imprisoned for unintentionally shooting his grandfather, and Jim went home to Bicol with his wife, so that is why Noel chose to go home, wherein his father accepted him again. And that is how the author concluded the novel.

The novel MacArthur educates the readers that there is no right or wrong choices. It depends on how or what one’s perspectives, thoughts, or opinions are. These choices that have been made, the people could not tell if that is a good or wrong decision. All decisions that an individual makes are what he/she is surrounded or influenced by. The environment with a different set of people, set of friends, and the changes in the society could affect one’s decisions. Having more options could lead them to much better choices and realize more about the mistakes that they have made before. Sometimes, they will be making bad decisions, but they will learn from the mistakes they have made. The author shows how poverty truly affects people’s lives and also wakes individuals from the reality of life that he/she must be ready for the ups and downs that will happen. In life, there will come a time that they will encounter unexpected situations. Situations can lead to challenges and may mislead their plans, but the author does not mean that it will fail the individual as a person. It tells the readers that they always have the choice to renew their life or start over again, thinking about the wrong decisions they have made before. Being prepared in life, being prepared for what people are going to conquer could make one’s life better and make his/her plans happen. Plans that a person wanted to happen for their life to make it better. Every decision a person makes could be right. But always remember to consider the decisions he/she has been making. Consider it for about ten times and make sure the choice that one makes is what he/she wants and is fully sure about it. The author wants his readers to reflect that everything happens and comes for a reason. One will always realize and learn from every path they take. This story could also tell the readers that an individual can be successful with his/her own will and determination. How will one be successful without doing anything? It is not that a person should always be on top. It is the way he/she sacrifices to achieve one’s goals. All things should be done with perseverance and not taken for granted. An individual must have patience and determination to make one’s goal happen. Having an educational background is not what a person can call living a successful life. Defining one’s purpose in life is the true meaning of success and it is a realization that the reader should make. A successful life does not mean he/she needs to graduate college and have honors or be on top. Sometimes people become successful in the way they perceive it, other people only graduated high school but those people still believe in themselves. Having determination, motivation and sacrifices could lead a person to what he/she defines success as. Try to push oneself to his/her limits and accept things that happen in one’s life. Always remember that there are no wrong choices, choices would only be wrong if an individual cannot stand them. long-term, her goal is to make a living off of her natural born talents - enough that she can live comfortably and provide for her mother and brother back home. in some ways, her drive for success is driven by an underlying spite towards her father’s lack of faith in his children amounting to much of anything, so if things go according to plan, he won’t be able to turn on the television without seeing his daughter’s face. she plans on honing her skills as a singer, as a performer, and becoming someone that lasts beyond the fleeting longevity of an idol group. as happy as she is being a member of mayday, she plans on making a name for herself, wants ong jimin - angel, to be someone that’s instantly recognizable in terms of face, ability, and charms. she admires the likes of lee hyori and her ability to thrive as the #1 korean entertainer, but would ultimately be happy being a household name through the likes of a solo career and intends on using her foot in the door in other avenues as a way to build a reputation strong enough to get her there.

when jimin was a little girl, her mother developed the habit of calling her her little angel because she was generous and kindhearted in a way that was rare for this world. the older she got, the more that affect declined and by the time she’d hit puberty, jimin was a more reserved and collected version of her younger self. she’d had to grow up quickly, miss out on the freedom of childhood and the luxury of living without stress or responsibility. back then, she’d called it doing what she had to do to keep food on the table, but looking back on it now, jimin wishes she’d had the opportunity to live a little more before she signed her life away. nothing about growing up had been fair but she considers that aspect of her childhood a part of what’s made her so strong today. jimin is a fighter in every aspect of the word: resilient and capable, strong and unaffected when the situation calls for it. strong, above all else.

she’s an easy image to construct - poised and lovely, with an air of impossibility, of mystery that could bring the strongest man to his knees. they frame her as the girly type, the kind of girl you’d want to marry - the ideal. she’s sweet and demure but fun and sexy when it matters, in a classy way - never trashy like the girls that get slighted in the media for being too much of a good thing. within the group, she’s the caring and maternal type, the one that cutely checks in on her members’ health and makes sure that dinner’s made in the dorms. she’s intelligent but vague, something airy and house-wifey about her that makes her desirable but not intimidating, easy to swallow for someone who can’t handle a girl who knows too much. they want her to play the role of the flirty and unattainable, a heart attack in heels and cute clothing. small and cute and beautiful, almost fairy-like in affect without falling into the trap of blending in.

from the day jimin is born things are different for her. she’s the youngest of two, the baby sister to an older brother who her mother adores. jinsung, five years her senior, is disabled - “defective” in the words of her father - due to a genetic disorder that had rendered him dependent and nonverbal, so from the moment she’s able, jimin plays a role in taking care of both her brother and herself. she helps him tie his shoes in the morning, brushes his hair and his teeth and makes sure he’s fed before she does the same for herself. it isn’t something she resents - at least not in the beginning, it’s all that she knows. she’s okay with it, happy to help the brother she loves so much live an easier life. to this day, some of her fondest memories are of her singing lullabies to her brother by his bedside and the two of them fumbling through the words of children’s books together before it’s time for bed.

the only person who seemed to have a problem with the arrangement was her father and, in some ways, jimin could hardly blame him. he’s a metalworker, a working class man in a society that thrives on the making and movement of money, and it’s hardly cheap to pay for the medication and machinery that jinsung needs to survive. it doesn’t help that jimin’s mother’s job is only part time due to the hours she needs to invest in taking care of their son and now their young daughter. there are too many mouths to feed and, truthfully, not enough to go around. so, one day he leaves- in the middle of the night, without so much as a goodbye, but he’s gracious enough to leave behind enough for them to buy groceries for the week, the keys to his rusted pick-up truck that he’d spent the better part of a year trying to restore.

jimin had been nine at the time and her mother, well, she’d been desperate.

it doesn’t take long for her mother to start taking jimin to open casting calls for child performers, signing her up for local competitions with cash prizes with hopes that she’ll walk away with enough to float them through to the next month. it’s not too bad, she reasons, because jimin likes to sing, she enjoysbeing in the spotlight, but above all her helpful nature won’t let her complain about it, because she hates the idea of letting anyone down more than anything. it’s a bitter truth, the knowledge that this is the way things have to be because her mom can’t take on any extra hours without having to pay someone to help care for jinsung as well. it’d be a money sink. she’s too young for this, but. she persists.

she’s lucky when she lands a small commercial role at the bright age of ten and even luckier when she wins a local singing competition at age eleven. before long it seems like jimin has taken on the role of breadwinner, as young as she is, keeping her family fed and healthy while juggling school and childhood friendships as best as she can. there’s little time for play when there’s singing to be done, when she could learn a little dancing for free from the older girls in the neighborhood who practice choreography from groups like STAT1C and Jubilee - irony’s her favorite to memorize. the next four years of her life are spent improving until she’s a force to be reckoned with.

at age fourteen, she goes into msg’s singing competition with the hopes that there’s an immediate cash payout for runner up that would help with the bills back home, but when she wins, the stakes are upped into changing her family’s way of living altogether. she’s part surprised and half completely expecting it. she could cry. god, she deserves this.

she doesn’t even have to beg when it comes time for her mother to sign the contract.

training to become an idol really starts out as a means to an end and it really feels that way for a long time, her daily schedule of taking the bus and the train to get to the msg company building, spending her every waking moment that wasn’t being spent doing school work or other side jobs to endure evaluations and diet suggestions (read: demands) so that she could be what they were looking for, and then trudging home in the dead of night hoping that she’d be picked. eventually she is, she watches CHERRYBOMB! thrive, watches the debut of girl groups in other companies and nearly loses her drive but then - she’s chosen. they call them something stupid that she’s since forgotten but she vividly remembers the feeling of this longshot becoming a reality.

they become mayday.

fast forward to debut and she still can’t believe it, floats on cloud nine and shakes hands with all the stars she can hardly believe are real. it’s not like she thought it would be, becoming a somebody, even if she’s only one somebody in a group of five. she doesn’t linger in it, though, because this is when the work truly begins. the first few months feel like a blur of music show performances and introductions, of vlive specials and instagram lives, but she quickly gets the hang of it. she likes this, having eyes on her, she gets good at selling the fantasy to those who’ll watch. she feels it the most when her birthday comes and goes and there’s a hashtag in her honor.

on camera, she’s angel. she lets jimin worry about the other stuff, the money and the rehearsals and the soundchecks and the recordings and the practice and the aches in the balls of her feet and the demanding schedules. she lets jimin think about home. angel’s got plans.

her time as an idol so far has given her a taste of what could be but she knows better than to get too greedy - not yet, anyway. even with msg’s restrictions, she feels freer, younger than she ever has, learns to harden her exterior into something impenetrable because it’s what the people want. the people want perfect and unattainable and angel wants to be a star, hopes the pull of success will quiet the phantom puffs of hot air on the back of her neck when she remembers what this is for, hopes it quiets the pinch of guilt she feels when she swallows it down and ignores her mother’s calls when life gets to be too much.

it feels good to be selfish.

it all happened in one fluid motion

the girl’s hand curled around your throat, your body slammed into the cabinet-lined walls, a gust of breath leaving your lungs

‘who sent you to keep watching us?’ she snarled, ripping away her black mask

‘I-I...’ well, what on earth were you going to say? she wouldn’t believe me anyway

‘don’t test my patience. I won’t spare a second in stopping your air supply.’ There was a furious glint in her eyes, but you had seen this look before

it was the look Daniel gave you when he broke up with you

suddenly, you felt Daniel’s arms snake around your waist, his soft lips came onto yours, deepening the kiss with urgency

WANNA ONE ❃ MOVIE DATES

YOON JISUNG

a romantic comedy movie like No Strings Attached or Friends with Benefits

talks a lot during it but gets shy if a sex scene comes on and will shut up instantly

really into cuddles, so you will be hugged for the whole duration of the movie

will also feed you popcorn all the time

“what do you mean you don’t want it? just eat it, you need to grow!”

somehow I think he will enjoy watching something like a thriller or a mystery movie that will make you both curious and anxious

so maybe a movie like Shutter Island or The Prestige

gets very excited and probably laughs and cries together with the main characters

i think he would like cuddling, but instead of you having your head placed on his shoulder

he will have his head on your lap as you play with his hair

imitates his favorite parts of it for a week after you see it and forces you to act with him

probably insists on seeing the same movie again for the 4th time in a row because he just liked it that much

i am 100 out of 10 sure, this boy will want to watch something that has to do with dancing so probably Step Up or Honey

you two jam to every song there is in the movie

but then you have to pause from 15 to 15 minutes because he has to show you that he can do the same move Channing Tatum did and better

you will watch a chick flick most likely, something like Mean Girls or Pitch Perfect

will comment on everything like “WOW BITCH I’M SHOOK”

makes 10 different facial expression in the spawn of 2 minutes

would hug you at the most random times

and mostly when something good happens in the movie just because he is so into it that he can feel the happiness of the main character

LAI GUAN LIN

i don’t know why but i can see him totally enjoying those movies with stupidly funny super heroes like Kick-Ass or Deadpool

not much a talker, but smiles and laughs a lot

lots of short comments like “wow”, “oh my god”, “that’s so stupid”

would probably take over the popcorn bowl and only keep it on his side

whether you cuddle or not mainly depends on you because he can go both ways

hugging you all throughout the movie and kissing the top of your head at time

or you two getting excited together and jumping up and down the couch when something cool happens in the movie

CHINGGIS QAN-U UJAΓUR, “THE ORIGIN OF CHINGGIS QAN”

This is an expert from my post “THE MONGOLS AND THE RISE OF GENGHIS KHAN”.

Though Khabul’s grandson, Yesugei (Genghis Khan’s father), was not a khan he was still a well-respected and effective chief. Yesugei Baghatur (ba’atur, “hero, brave, valiant, knight, lord”) kidnapped a woman from the Merkits (Mongolian) named Hoelun, whom he would soon marry. His kidnapping of Hoelun led to a long standing feud between the two confederacies which would carry on to Yesugei’s and Hoelun’s son Temujin (Genghis Khan).

“At the time of his birth he was born clutching in his right hand a clot of blood the size of a knucklebone. Because he was born when the Tatar Temüjin Üge had been brought captive, for this very reason they gave him the name Temüjin.” – The Secret History of the Mongols.

At the age of nine Temujin and his father journeyed to seek out the Olqunu’ut people, in hopes of finding Temujin a wife. On their way there they came across a relative (by marriage) named Dei Secen of the Onggirat tribe who told Yesugei:

“This son of yours is a boy who has fire in his eyes, who has light in his face”. “I had a dream last night, I did. A white gerfalcon clasping both sun and moon in its claws flew down to me and perched on my hand.” “Before, when I looked, I could only see the sun and the moon from afar; now this gerfalcon has brought them to me and has perched on my hand. He has alighted, all white. Just what sort of good thing does this show? I had my dream, quda Yisügei, just as you were coming here bringing your son. I had a dream of good omen.” – The Secret History of the Mongols.

After this Dei Secen introduced them to his ten year old daughter Borte who also had light in her face and fire in her eyes. Temujin was then given to Dei Secen as his son-in-law and Yesugei departed. While Yesugei traveled back he came across a group of Tatars (Turks) who were feasting, as he joined them Yesugei was unaware that they had poisoned his meal as revenge for a previous raid he had led against them. Temujin returned home to find that their own people had abandoned them. Too young to rule in his own right, Temujin and his family were left destitute and deserted by their own people.

Lady Hoelun (Temujin’s mother) struggled to keep her family fed and taken care of; foraging for bird cherries, crab apples, wild garlic, wild leek, lily bulbs, silverweed and great burnet roots. As they “grew up into fine men, truly valiant and bold. Saying to each other, ‘Let us feed our mother!’ They sat on the bank of Mother Onan (River), they prepared their hooks and fished mean and paltry fish; bending needle into hook, they fished for salmon and grayling. They made seines and dragnets, and caught fingerlings: then, with grateful heart, they fed their mother.” One of the earliest dark scenes of Temujin’s life occurred when Temujin killed his older brother Bekter who would steal hard earned food meant for the family.

Temujin would follow, like most Mongols, a life of constant strife. Throughout his life he was continually attacked, robbed, kidnapped, enslaved and forced to fight, hide or flee. Along the way he came across individuals that went out of their way to aid him, many of whom became close friends or anda (‘blood brothers’). One such individual was To’oril, a powerful Khan of the Kerayits (Mongols). Earlier Yesugei (Temujin’s father) helped To’oril fight the latter’s paternal uncle and reunite the Kerayit Mongols under To’oril’s banner. Since then the two swore to be brothers by oath (anda, ‘blood brother’) and in turn To’oril became like a father, mentor and patron to Temujin after his father’s death. “When he came to [To’oril]Qan, Temüjin said, ‘Since in earlier days you and my father declared yourselves sworn friends you are, indeed, like a father to me.”

To’oril and Temujin loved each other like father and son, referring to each other as such and To’oril even contemplates naming Temujin as his heir. “As for myself, now I have grown old, and having grown old, when I shall ascend to the heights – I have grown ancient, and having grown ancient, when I shall ascend to the cliffs – who will govern all my people? My younger brothers lack force of character; there is only Senggüm, my one son, but it is as if he did not exist. If I make my son Temujin the elder brother of Senggüm, I shall have two sons and my mind will be at rest. (TSHotM, 164)”

They would latter declare themselves father and son, promising:

“‘When we attack the enemy hosts, We shall attack together as one; When we chase the cunning wild beasts, We shall also chase them together as one!’” – The Secret History of the Mongols, 164.

“Out of jealousy for us two – should a snake with venomous teeth provoke discord between us, let us not succumb to his provocations. By talking only mouth to mouth we shall believe each other! Should a snake with venomous fangs spread slander about us, let us not accept his slander. By explaining only face to face we shall believe each other!” – The Secret History of the Mongols, 164.

When Temujin gave To’oril Qan a precious sable coat To’oril promised Temujin that (like Yesugei had done previously): “In return for the sable coat, I shall unite for you, your scattered people. Just as the place of the kidneys must be in the back, that of good faith must be in the breast!” (TSHotM). To’oril Khan would become like a father to Temujin and both swore many times over to that affect.

Temujin’s wife Borte was kidnapped by the Merkits (Mongolian) seeking to avenge the kidnapping of Hoelun by Temujin’s father in the distant past.

Temujin sought the aid of To’oril Qan; “We have come now to ask you, O Qan my father, to rescue my wife and return her to me”. To’oril Qan and his younger brothers rallied a large force of warriors to defeat the Merkits and Temujin’s wife, they succeeded in both. When Temujin became Genghis Khan, he made it illegal to kidnap women, partially because of this incident but also because this would end one of the reasons for conflict between the steppe nomads.

“The reason why they declared themselves father and son was because in early days Ong Qan had declared himself a sworn friend of Chinggis Qa’an’s father Yisügei Qan, and by virtue of this fact Chinggis Qa’an said that Ong Qan was like a father to him. Such was the reason why they declared themselves father and son. They made the following promises to each other: ‘When we attack the enemy hosts, we shall attack together as one; when we chase the cunning wild beasts, we shall also chase them together as one!’

So they declared. Chinggis Qa’an and Ong Qan also promised each other, saying, ‘Out of jealousy for us two – should a snake with venomous teeth provoke discord between us, Let us not succumb to his provocations. By talking only mouth to mouth we shall believe each other! Should a snake with venomous fangs spread slander about us, let us not accept his slander. By explaining only face to face we shall believe each other!’” – The Secret History of the Mongols, 164.

Another person that Temujin became close to was To’oril’s younger brother Jamuqa. When Temujin was eleven, Jamuqa the two of them vowed twice to be sworn friends (anda, ‘blood brothers’), “Sworn friends – the two of them share but a single life; they do not abandon one another: they are each a life’s safeguard for the other. (TSHotM, 117)”.

After To’oril and Jamuqa had helped Temujin save his wife, Jamuqa and he decided to renew that pledge they had made so long ago. The first time (when Temujin was eleven) they swore to become anda (oath brothers) they exchanged knucklebones, the second time (the following spring) it was arrows and this last time they exchanged a golden belt and a horse respectively.

For the next year and a half Temujin and Jamuqa remained close friends but in time ‘Sworn friend Jamuqa, so they say, grows easily tired of his friends. (TSHotM, 118)” After discovering that Jamuqa was planning on ambushing him, Temujin and his camp departed under the cover of night. Subsequently many Mongolian clans and tribes rallied to Temujin side, including some who were formerly allied with Jamuqa.

“We would not have parted from him (Jamuqa), but a heavenly sign appeared before my very eyes, revealing the future to me (Qorchi). There came a fallow cow. She circled Jamuqa and struck his tent-cart with her horns; then she butted him too, breaking one of her two horns. Being thus left with uneven horns, “Bring me my horn!” she kept saying, bellowing repeatedly at Jamuqa as she stood there, hoofing up the ground and raising more and more dust. Then a hornless and fallow ox lifted up the great shaft under the tent, harnessed it on to himself and pulled it after him. As he proceeded following Temüjin on the wide road, he kept bellowing, “Together Heaven and Earth have agreed: Temüjin shall be lord of the people!” and “I am drawing near carrying the people and bringing it to him.” These heavenly signs appeared before my eyes; they revealed the future to me.” – Qorchi of the Ba’arin tribe was sent a heavenly sign. The Secret History of the Mongols.

Now having a tribe which extended beyond just his blood relatives, Temujin called for a kuriltai (assembly) where those who attended also voted in favor of assigning Temujin the title of Chinggis Qa’an. Chinggis Qa’an then sent envoys to his oath father To’oril (who was happy to hear the news) and his oath brother Jamuqa (who was angered that his own men had sided with Temujin Khan). Jamuqa’s younger brother was then killed by one of Temujin Khan’s tribesmen after robbing their herd of horses from them. This was enough for Jamuqa to assemble his thirteen camps of thirty thousand against Chinggis Qa’an. After repelling Chinggis Qa’an at the Battle of Dalan Balzhut, Jamuqa had some of those that had deserted him to join Chinggis Qa’an tortured and killed.

“Jamuqa had the princes of the Chinòs boiled alive in seventy cauldrons. Having cut off the head of Chaqa’an U’a of the Ne’üs, he dragged it away bound to the tail of his horse.” – The Secret History of the Mongols, 129.

Now in 1201 CE Mongolian and Tatar (Turkish) tribes assembled and chose Jamuqa to lead them as their Gur-Khan (universal chief of khans, used mostly by the Turco-Mongol empire of Kara Khitai):”‘Let us raise Jamuqa the Jajirat as qan’, they jointly hacked the backs of a stallion and a mare and together swore an oath of friendship.” Some of the tribes he now ruled were ones that had wronged Chinggis Qa’an (Temujin) and his ancestors, most importantly the Turkish Tatars and the Mongolian Naimans. By taking the title Gur-Khan, Jamuqa was effectively challenging and undermining his older brother To’oril Ong Qan who was the regional overlord. Jamuqa would continue warring with his older brother (To’oril Ong Qan) and his oath brother (Chinggis Qa’an).

Temujin Khan wanted to strengthen the alliance between himself and his oath father To’oril Ong Qan by arranging marriages between their children but To’oril’s son (Nilqa Senggüm) refused to do so, pressuring To’oril into unintentionally disrespecting and placing himself above Temujin Khan by refusing, a rift grew between the two. To’oril’s brother (Jamuqa) and son (Senggüm) were able to trick and convince To’oril into joining them against Temujin Khan. While they wished to handle the issue of Temujin Khan violently, To’oril Ong Qan tried to convince them to instead rob Chinggis Qa’an (Temujin) of his people and in turn strip him of power. “The best plan is to go ahead and capture Temujin’s people. If his people are taken away from him and he is left without them, what can he do (TSHotM, 166)?” The ‘Secret History of the Mongols’ goes to great lengths to describe the pain, anguish and torment To’oril and Chinggis Qa’an went through when pitted into this impossible position.

“Khan, my father, why turn against me? Don’t you recall how we swore allegiance? Were we not like oxen pulling together, or like the wheels on a two-wheeled cart? Did not Yesugei, my father, come to your help? Were you two not sworn brothers? Did you not say ‘I will repay your favor to your children’s children’? When you were cast out, surviving with five goats, drinking the blood of your camels, did I not restore you? When you were plundered by the Naimans, did I not send my four greatest men, my four ‘war horses’, to help you, and save your son? So why, khan my father, do you turn against me?” – The Secret History of the Mongols.

To’oril Ong Qan: “How can I separate from my child, my son (Chinggis Qa’an)? Because until now he has been our support, is it right to harbor evil intentions against him? We shall not be loved by Heaven (Tengri)” (TSHotM, 167). In the end To’oril’s fear of losing his son Senggüm to this dispute pressured him into siding against Chinggis (Temujin). After losing a great clash Jamuqa Gur-Khan and To’oril Ong Qan fled, the latter was mistakenly killed by a Naiman bodyguard. To compensate for this, the Naiman queen asked that To’oril’s head should be brought to her so she could atone for this mistake. She placed To’oril’s head on a sacred white felt cloth at the back of her ger (yurt, tent), a place of great honor.

A ceremony then commenced in which the queen prayed and offered wine to the head as if he was still alive since the head of a person was seen as the seat of their soul. All the while her daughters-in-law danced and sang while musicians played their morin huur (horsehead fiddles). When the Naiman Khan supposedly saw the head of To’oril Ong Qan smile or laugh at him he fell into a panic in which he kicked the head off of the sacred white felt cloth and stomped it to a pulp. After Jamuqa’s final defeat, he fled and was later turned over to Chinggis Qa’an (Temujin) by his own people, who were executed for their betrayal. Chinggis still saw Jamuqa as his sworn blood brother so he tried to convince Jamuqa into joining him:

“Now the two of us are united. Let us be companions! If we become each of us like one of the two shafts of a cart, would you think of separating yourself from me and being on your own? Now that we are together once more, let us each remind the other of what he has forgotten, let us each wake up the other who has fallen asleep. Although you separated from me and went a different way, you remain my lucky, blessed sworn friend. On the day one kills and is killed, surely your heart was aching for me. Although you separated from me and went a different way, on the day one fights one another, your lungs and heart were aching for me.” – The Secret History of the Mongols.

Jamuqa Gur-Khan replies to Chinggis Qa’an (Temujin), his oath brother:

“In early days when we were small, in the Qorqonaq Valley I agreed with my sworn friend the Qan to become sworn friends: together we ate food that is not to be digested, to each other we spoke words that are not to be forgotten, together we were under our blanket sharing it between us (a common non-sexual custom still done today), but stirred up by someone coming between us, pricked by someone standing at the side, we parted for good. Saying to myself that we had exchanged weighty words, the skin of my black face peeled off in shame; and so I have been living unable to come near you, unable to see the friendly face of my sworn friend the Qan. Saying to myself that we had exchanged unforgettable words, the skin of my red face came off in shame; and so I have been living unable to see the true face of my sworn friend with a long memory.

‘Now my sworn friend the Qan shows favour to me and says, “Let us be companions!” But when it was the time for being companions, I was not one. Now, sworn friend, You have pacified all our people, You have unified all other peoples, and the Qan’s throne has been assigned to you. Now that the world is at your disposal, of what use would I be as a companion to you? On the contrary, O my sworn friend, I would intrude into your dreams in the dark night, I would trouble your heart in the bright day, I would be a louse in your collar, I would be a thorn in the inner lapel of your coat. ‘I had many paternal grandmothers. When I became disloyal to my sworn friend I made a mistake. Now, in this life – that of the sworn friend and me – my fame has indeed passed from sunrise to sunset.” – The Secret History of the Mongols.

“If you want to show favour to me, let me die swiftly and your heart will be at rest. And if you condescend to have me put to death, let them kill me without shedding blood. When I lie dead, my bones buried in a high place, for ever and ever I shall protect you and be a blessing to the offspring of your offspring.” – The Secret History of the Mongols.

Despite their tumultuous relationship, Chinggis (Temujin) honored him by giving him an honorable death without bloodshed and burying him in a high place per their custom. It is believed that Chinggis buried his sworn blood brother Jamuqa with a golden belt Chinggis gave him when they renewed their oath of brotherhood.

“He ordered that Jamuqa be put to death without his blood being shed and that his body should not be abandoned in the open, but be given a fitting burial. He had Jamuqa executed there and then, and had his body buried as arranged.” – The Secret History of the Mongols.

With the deaths of Jamuqa and To’oril, Chinggis Qa’an (Temujin) effectively became the de facto overlord of the Mongolian Steppe. In 1206 CE the majority of their neighboring Mongolian and Turkish tribes gathered at a kuriltai (assembly) to accepted the forty-four years old Chinggis as their Qan (Khan).

“And so, when the people of the felt-walled tents had been brought to allegiance, in the Year of the Tiger (1206 CE) they all gathered at the source of the Onan River. They hoisted the white standard with nine tails (yak) and there they gave Chinggis Qa’an the title of qan (Khan).” – The Secret History of the Mongols.

As far as the eye can see, gers spread out for miles in every direction. The event was celebrated with feasts, music and sports. The eriin gurvan naadam (“three manly games”) were wrestling, archery and horse racing. Music filled the air from day till nightfall; chanting, drums were pounded on, morin huur (horse-head fiddle) were played and the Mongols vocalized their tradition Mongolian throat-singing.

Request: hi!! i saw that you take requests and i though that maybe you would do one where harry had to brekup with y/n because of his manager and date someone else, at first he did not wanted but at the end he doit , and it hurt him so bad because he loves her and they been 4 years in the relationship , then its past some months and y/n is trying to be happy again , and they avoid echother for a long time because y/n was hurt and angry and harry because he didnt wanna saw her hurt because it makes him sad but then a meeting or something come up and they see eachother and y/n finally spit out everything for him and cry and scream and harry at first he is quiet but then try to explain her everything because he doesnt wanna see her hurt because of him and that she means theworld to him still , you can finish it however you want (i know is alittle ong but please)

A/N: I listened to Lady Gaga’s song Million reasons while writing this so I decided to name the story after the song. Also remember to tell me what you think and enjoy!

P.O.V Harry

How was I gonna get around this?

Why did this have to happen?

How was I gonna tell her?

I was recently informed by my managers that y/n and I have to break it off. They suggested that it would be the very best for my future and for my career and after I break it off with her then most likely be paired up with some other A-list model. I mean when I was first told that I had to do this I was very shocked and raging with anger, that they even thought about crossing that line containing y/n and I’s relationship is such a low blow. But I have worked so hard for what I have today and wanna work on it even more and become better and better each day. Ever since y/n and I have been dating I have worried about her and wanted to make her happy everyday but some days are not like that. She gets a lot of hate for being my girlfriend and cries about it more than i wish that she would. I know she can get down on herself and i just know deep down she has thought about “What would my life be like if we never had gotten together?”

So maybe letting her go is the best for us.

I walk up to our shared home and unlock the door and shut it behind me.

“Love I’m home” I yell out trying to find y/n and sliding my boots off my feet

“Here in the kitchen babe” y/n yells out back to me

“Hey baby! how is your day?” she says me while getting off the chair walking towards me

“Okay but we need to talk about something” I say and grab her hand and lead her back to her chair and sit her down

“Why? something wrong? you’re scaring me!” y/n says with a worried look on her face looking pretty flustered

“I think we need to break up” I say and while trying to look away and not face her

“WHAT? WHY?” she yells at me with a shocked look on her face

“I just don’t think we are we working out... we just aren’t as happy as we use to be” i say lying to her

“You aren’t happy? what the hell I thought we were the happiest couple, i just don’t understand” she says with tears steaming down her face

“Somethings just don’t work out okay” I say trying to hold back my tears

she doesn’t say anything she just looks away from me crying

“I’m gonna get a bag and come get the rest of my stuff this weekend” I say trying to talk to her

but she doesn’t respond she just stays in the same position crying. I run up to our shared room and look around, all the memories we had in this house rushing through. I grab a bag and throw a bunch of clothes in and walk back downstairs seeing y/n in the same position.

“Sorry it has to be this way” I say trying to have some type of closure

She still doesn’t respond so i decide to walk out for good

Its been 3 moths since I saw y/n. I thought maybe this would be easy but it isn’t. I miss her so much that it hurts inside and pains my chest. I knew deep down that this was a bad idea and i just wish i had her back. I was set up with some model named Audrey from my management. We got along and i respected her but she defiantly wasn’t anything like y/n. Y/n was sweet, beautiful and so caring. I don’t know how i could truly ever let her go.

P.O.V Y/N

Its been so long since I last saw Harry. But I knew it was for the best not to think of him let alone see him in person. It would only make it harder for me to get over him. I truly thought that he was the one and that we were gonna be together forever but i guess things just didn’t work out that way. I got a call recently from actually the same building I knew Harry's management office was at. I was trying to apply for a new job just as a simple assistant to help pay rent.

I went up to the front door and grabbed it open and headed out to the office to have this interview. I really didn’t wanna run into Harry if he was there because I know it would crush me and ruin me but deep down I wanted to just so I could look in his eyes and see if he truly misses me at all.

When I arrived I parked my car and walked in. When i got inside it seemed like i didn’t recognize anyone. So I walked up to the elevator and hit the button waiting for it to open. When it did I walked inside and hit floor 5 and stood in here all alone, slowly biting my nails because I want this interview to go well. When I walked out and started down the hall It was like it hit me.

It was him. He was standing right there leaning against a wall looking at me. Our eyes met and he opened his mouth but at this very moment I didn’t care what he had to say. I walked right up to him and just screamed so loud.

“FUCK YOU JUST LEAVE ME ALONE AND DON’T SPEAK TO ME” I scream at him with all my force

He tries to speak up but I cut him right off once again

“I WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU, YOU HAVE BETRAYED ME AND I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU” I scream even louder

“YOU HURT ME SO BAD AND BROKE MY HEART, I THOUGHT YOU WERE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE” I say almost on the verge of crying

And at that moment I just start hysterically crying and letting it all out in front of him

“Baby I am soooo sorry what i did to you, I never wanted to do this to you. All I want for you is to be happy” He says while walking up and putting my head on his chest

“I still love you so much and all I truly wanted is you” He says getting upset a bit

“Management wanted to break up with you, they sadly convinced me” He says and I can tell he is getting mad with himself

“But I don’t care anymore I just wanna be with you and won’t listen to them no matter what. Singing is my career but you are my life” He says resting his head on mine

“I love you y/n” he says kissing my forehead

I pause not really knowing if I’m ready to jump into things so quickly

“Baby if you aren’t ready for this we can go slow” He says resting his hands under my chin

“Yeah I would like that” I say and giving him a smile and whipping my tears away

Harry grabs my hand and we both walk out of the building. I know deep down I truly love this man and want him with me forever. I’m glad that he was happy and it was all about his job but also sad because his work purposely wanted to hurt us.

I look over at Harry and can see him smiling to himself while holding my hand. I’m glad I gave him a second chance

“Harry” I say calling his attention

“Yes love” He says looking over at me smiling

“I love you” I say smiling back
