Scrambling Across Shibuya

Shibuya. Known for its 109 building, the Hachiko statue out the front of the JR station and its busy crossing, the district is a popular area for tourists and locals alike. It is often described as the heart and soul of the bustling city that is Tokyo and is known for its nightlife and fashionable youth culture. What's more, it has appeared in several anime an games - leaving a strong impression on anyone who wishes to travel to Japan.

For me, this came in the form of The World Ends With You and Ghostwire Tokyo. And let's be honest, it was mostly The World Ends With You, as well as its sequel: NEO: The World Ends With You that sold me on Shibuya. Especially when it came to the iconic places in and around the area like Tower Records and the MODI shopping mall. You could also duck into Udagawacho in the game as well.

And with the trailer of Kingdom Hearts 4 showing Sora in a world featuring the 104 building - the variation of the 109 building in The World Ends With You, I'm sure you can understand my excitement.

Still, it wasn't all that long ago I visited Shibuya with my family. Eight years after my first visit, I was back there again, this time accompanied by bleachpanda as we caught up with two other friends from Australia for some much needed retail therapy as a reward for a long and arduous trip.

As was tradition, I arranged to catch-up with my two other friends by meeting near the statue of Hachiko. Mostly because it was a common meet-up spot and secondly, I didn't want to spend the day chasing after my friend as they moved from crossing to cafe to bookstore. After all, I'd already accidentally taken the wrong line to get to Shibuya Station and had to divert via bus.

Not a good start to the day.

Once we had caught up, it was off to the closest shop. From Uniqlo to Sanrio to Loft, we had a look at what was available. Despite the fact bleachpanda and I had been overseas for nigh on three weeks, this was the first time we had stopped to buy clothing for ourselves. And Loft was also a surprise. Especially when it came to souvenirs or gifts for friends.

In my defence, I wasn't in Japan for shopping and had left a lot of the research with regards to shopping for bleachpanda as I knew there were places she wanted to visit, whereas I was fine to simply look and stare at Pokemon and Disney. Which, by the way, we also visited after having some yakiniku. This also included another Capcom Store, Nintendo, a local Jump! store and a few other places to feed my need to purchase merchandise and delightful goodies to add to my ever-growing collection of things I probably wouldn't need.

While many of the things I bought are presents and souvenirs for friends, there is still a hefty amount of stuffed toys and cute items I bought that were for me alone. Bleachpanda, too, couldn't resist the chance to indulge as she bought a mountain of things while at Uniqlo and had to lug it with her as we continued on our shopping spree in Shibuya.

With evening soon upon us, my other friends had to depart earlier. They'd arranged to meet with a few other people they knew for dinner on the other side of Tokyo. Bleachpanda and I headed down to Harajuku, enjoying the brisk walk, to try out some crepes she had seen on Instagram. And to be honest, Marion Crepes was much better than the Harajuku crepes in Sydney - from the flavour to the diversity of choices, and even to the price.

And while it wasn't the in-depth walk through of Harajuku I enjoyed eight years ago with my mum, after we had toured the nearby shrine, it was still a good quick look at one of the most bustling places in Tokyo.

Afterwards, bleachpanda and I returned to our hotel in Shinjuku. Along the way, we stopped at the Disney Flagship store and had dinner at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant where we once again munched down on some lovely fatty tuna and salmon.

But though our time was ending in Japan, we still had so much more to do in Japan!

Oh, and before I forget, bleachpanda also stopped by the local Don Quijote (the day before) and bought herself a second suitcase to bring back all her goodies and to give my poor suitcase a reprieve from all the things she had bought. The two of us now had a total of four suitcases to stow all the things we wanted to buy and even then, it was a near thing trying to shove it all together.

I visited the One Piece Gym in Tokyo

What the title says :D And I'm just posting this, because I need to yell at someone.

The One Piece gym in Tokyo Shibuya is called "Brag Man". It's on the ninth floor of the Shibuya Modi and you can take an elevator straight up there. Or the stairs, if you want a good warm up.

tldr: It's a medium sized gym that costs more, because you pay the licencing fee. But if you are a big gym goer and One Piece fan, it might be for you.

What is the One Piece Gym?

This is basically just a regular old gym, but One Piece themed. The walls are covered in manga panels, the lat pulldown machines handle has a huge imitation of Whitebeards beard on it (making you look like him when working out) and the voice actors and (!) Oda-sensei himself have signed the walls.

The gym offers an assortment of treatmills, stairmasters and crosstrainers. The workout machines are by hammer strengh. You have the classics like chestpress, lat pulldown, pectoral fly, leg press, inner and outher thigh machines etc. You can also use benches and exactly one power rack for squads and stuff is available.

There is also an area for free excercises and stretching. Including a small corner, where you can read all One Piece manga available in Japan at the time and the most current Shonen Jump.

All guests have access to toiletts in front of the gym. The changing rooms are seperated by gender and feature each a bunch of lockers named after One Piece characters. In the back there are also a few very nice showers, hairdryers and the gym offers shampoo and body soap.

How does one work out there?

Basically, you travel to Shibuya, walk to the building and get up to the ninth floor - whenever the gym is open. I went around 11:30 am on a regular weekday. The gym was empty aside from me and the trainers.

At the front desk you greet the staff - they do speak a bit of english - and choose between four progressively more expensive one time visitor plans.

Visitor E: 3.850 Yen for kids between 13 and 18 + One Piece Whey Protein

Visitor D: 4.400 Yen - allows the useage of the gym for up to one hour

Visitor C: 6.600 Yen - allows the useage of the gym for up to five hours + One Piece Whey Protein

Visitor B: 7.700 Yen - same as C + Original Meassurement paper

Visitor A: 13.200 Yen - Same as B + Shirt + Protein Shaker + Course ticket

I went with "Visitor C" - my workout programm takes longer than an hour and if I was gonna spend money on a gym visit in Japan, I was gonna make it count.

Included in all plans are special gym shoes (so you don't have to bring those), a small towel and a tiny towel, that you use to desinfect your machines after use. I was a bit worried about the shoe sizes, but they are equipped for foreign fitness and One Piece fans. :)

What you do need to bring, if you plan on showering, is a big towel. I just borrowed one from my hotel.

And well, then? You get started with your own workout routine. Of course: You can always ask the trainers for a bit of help here and there.

What makes the gym special?

The One Piece theme of course. The walls are covered in One Piece manga panels. The course room is called "deck" and shaped like a part of the thousand sunny.

Some of the plates you need for a few machines look like huge Berry coins - the currency of the One Piece world.

As described: The lockers don't have numbers, but are all named after different characters. I was tempted with Sir Crocodile, Cavendish and Zorro. In the end I locked everything up in the locker named after the Going Mary.

There are also some photo spots and when asked, the staff will take pics of you there: You can try to pull a golden Buggys arms, hold a life sized meat piece just after Luffys taste and pretend to be whitebeard.

Important to mention are also the signatures of the original five Strawhat voice actors. And a special message and signing by Eichiro Oda.

At the entrance, you can also get a bunch of merchandise, that you can only get there.

Oh - forgot this one almost: They exclusively play the most badass One Piece soundtracks!

Was it worth it?

Yes. As I'm writing this, my butt still hurts from overdoing it to impress the judging gaze of Whitebeard across the wall from the leg press.

But: I'm going to the gym on a regular basis anyways and I adore One Piece.

If I was only one of those two things, I would very much not have enjoyed my stay. The gym rat within me would have looked for cheaper options and the OP fan wouldn't know what to do with half of the machines there.

Only the combination of both makes the visit worth it. But will I do it again? Nah. Probably not. I've now seen it and if I crave a workout, I can simply find a cheaper gym.

Should YOU go there?

If this had been my first time in Japan, I would not have gone there. But I had time to spare and was in dire need of a workout. So, if it's your first time and the schedule is tight? Skip it.

But if you are like me - well versed in Tokyo tourist and non-tourist attractions - and if you like One Piece and if you like the gym? Yeah, go for it. It's a great place to spend some time, meet other One Piece fans and for the hell of it: Who can say Whitebeard judged their workout or they had a Jaya Cherry Pie flavored protein shake afterwards? Exactly.
