Most people are unaware of the fact that deafness is not a learning disability and this misconception quite often has led to exclusion and segregation. Our education system needs to understand the importance for the Deaf to be given the opportunity to follow the same curriculum as their hearing peers in order for them to achieve the same qualifications and experiences. It is important that the curriculum is accessible for the deaf and that their teachers know how support them properly. This form of inclusion would be great only if it is properly led, managed, focused and driven. Having said that, it is important to note that inclusive schools and technology such as hearing aids, does not guarantee a good fix in a mainstream setting. Deaf schools could be the preferred option but there needs to be options. With cost cuts, lack of awareness and understanding of the Deaf and few Teachers of the Deaf, the trend of Deaf schools closing continue, which limits the options left. A few years ago, a law was passed which stated that special educational needs are committed to meeting the individual's needs. But reality is that often the amount of support you get is not determined by your need, it is determined by a policy. I hope educators learn from the History of the Deaf Education System from Oralism and banned signing in the 1880s which resulted in many deaf individuals failing the national curriculum due to it being inaccessible, to an understanding of the need to carry out a full diagnostic assessment in order to map out an appropriate educational pathway for the Deaf. I hope we improve our education systems to provide the service Deaf individuals are entitled to. This week is International Week of the Deaf which aims to raise greater awareness and recognition of sign languages, and that early access to sign language and services in sign language, including quality education, is vital to the growth and development of deaf individual and critical to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals. #Accessability #SignLanguagesDay
