Cultivation methods for other purposes, however, vary significantly. There are two basic types of cultivation: indoor and outdoor growing.
For many people, indoor growing is the most common way to cultivate the plant. This is partly because it is easier to control environments inside a home than outside, but there are some drawbacks to growing marijuana indoors. Some of these include more susceptible plants, shorter growing seasons, higher costs, and lower yields.
When growing marijuana indoors, the primary concern is providing consistent light cycles to keep the plants healthy and growing at their potential. Some of the best growing mediums, such as hydroponics growing trays, nutrient rich nutrient sheets, and growing solution can be used effectively in this case. Many home growers start out by growing their first crop in small pots on kitchen countertops or windowsill.
Most home growers start out large and compact, usually with four plants in each pot. As they get into the flowering and growing stages of the plant, they will prune one plant and add the rest to the pot. The reason for this is to avoid overcrowding. If three plants are grown together in a large pot, they will produce three crops of buds, instead of the desired four. The same goes for two plants being grown in small pots.
Another key to good indoor growing is having good drainage. Potting materials should drain quickly after being applied. For good results, marijuana growers often use a mesh top on their pots, filtering the water through the mesh to ensure even drainage of the soil. However, studies have been inconsistent in determining if taking an orthosilicic acid supplement is as effective as consuming silicon through diet. So far, research indicates that getting silicon from food may be more effective.
