But it’s not until he reaches up to touch his fingertips to Sam’s forehead that he knows for certain. 

Sam flinches back hard enough he knocks into the door frame behind him, his voice a strangled plea, so quiet it’s little more than the shaping of lips, “Don’t. Please.” 

“I…” Swallowing, he squeezes his eyes shut. When they open again, they meet Gabriel’s fleetingly before fixating somewhere to the side of him, “I need it to be real.” 

Slowly, Gabriel lowers his hand between them, turning his palm up and offering it out instead. 

And thinks, as Sam hesitantly reaches back, that it’s been a while since the brothers had a case as bad as this one must have been.
