Let’s Ride the Ferry

The Alaska Marine Highway has many ferry routes throughout the Alaska panhandle. We took the AMH from Skagway to Haines, a short “ride” of an hour. However, getting onto the ferry was longer. This new ferry the MV Tazlina, launched in the spring of 2019, was built to be bow & stern loaded.

However, the ferry docks in Skagway & Haines had yet to be retrofitted to accommodate, they were built for side loading. Which meant we had to back onto & into the ferry, so we were facing the right direction to disembark. That’s where the fun came in.

First the Denham’s with their Dodge 3500 (manual transmission) and 23ft TT. All the turning adjusting etc caused the clutch to over heat. Whew, finally in place.

Then our turn. I had the easy part, drive our tow car on with the other cars, a breeze. Then poor Barry had to maneuver our 40ft Casa onto & into the ferry. Did it, but almost backed in too close to his brothers-in-law’s truck.

Now we can relax as we make our way down the inlet to the Lynn Canal towards Haines.

That feeling when you successfully climb about 100ft up a rockface and repel down 🙌🏻 Swipe 🔜 to see the during, at the top, and immediately after 😲 Alaska is giving me all the physical excursions I could dream and pushing me outside my comfort zone. Quick story: almost at the top I reached the point where I called down to the guide that I thought I was good and was afraid to climb the last few feet. She called up “You’re so close! Just pull yourself up!” Not wanting to look like a weakling in front of my badass guide I pushed myself to be brave and pull myself on top of the last rock and touch the top. I used to be afraid of time. It always felt like it was going to run out, so I would try and hold onto every second for dear life. Like it was all I had. I now realize it wasn’t the loss of time I feared, but the uncertainty of the future. I wasn’t ‘living in the moment’ because I was afraid of losing it. I was afraid of what was coming next. I still think everyone should live in this moment, and cherish it. But don’t hold onto it so tightly it stops you in your tracks. I’m trying to live life like I’m on a scenic train journey now. I see beautiful moments along the way, maybe make a couple pit stops for photos and memories, then I’m back on board onto the next station. Choo choo bitches!! 😘😜🤘🏼🚞 P.S.
