nderstanding the Importance of Colorado Radon Testing for Safe Living
Radon, a colorless and odorless gas, lurks beneath the ground in many areas, including Colorado. With its potential health risks, Colorado radon testing has become increasingly crucial for homeowners and residents alike. Colorado radon testing allows individuals to assess the radon levels in their homes, ensuring a safe living environment for themselves and their families.
Radon is a radioactive gas that forms naturally from the decay of uranium in soil and rock. It can seep into buildings through cracks and openings in the foundation, accumulating to dangerous levels over time. In Colorado, where geological conditions are conducive to radon formation, the risk of elevated radon levels in homes is significant. Therefore, conducting regular radon mitigation Denver is essential for mitigating this risk and safeguarding against potential health hazards.
Exposure to high levels of radon has been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer, making it the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Surgeon General's Office have both issued statements highlighting the importance of radon testing for all homes, especially in high-risk areas like Colorado. Fortunately, Colorado radon testing is a straightforward process that can be conducted by certified professionals.
During a radon test, detectors are placed in the lowest livable area of the home for a specified period, usually between 48 hours to several months, depending on the type of test being conducted. These detectors measure the concentration of radon gas in the air, providing valuable data to determine if radon mitigation measures are necessary.
If elevated radon levels are detected during Colorado radon testing, homeowners can take proactive steps to reduce radon levels and minimize health risks. Radon mitigation Denver involves various techniques, such as sealing cracks in the foundation, installing ventilation systems, or implementing soil depressurization methods. These mitigation measures effectively reduce radon levels, ensuring a safer indoor environment for occupants.
It's important to note that radon levels can fluctuate throughout the year, so regular testing is recommended, especially for homes with basements or crawl spaces. Additionally, new construction homes in Colorado are now required to have passive radon mitigation systems installed, demonstrating the state's commitment to addressing this public health concern.
In conclusion, Colorado radon testing is an essential step in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents. By conducting regular tests and implementing radon mitigation Denver measures when necessary, homeowners can effectively reduce the risk of radon exposure and protect their loved ones from the dangers of this silent but deadly gas.

Beyond Surface Safety: Prioritizing Radon Inspection in Denver Homes
Tumblr media
Introduction
Safety within the confines of our homes is a paramount concern, but some threats remain hidden from plain view. Radon gas, a colorless and odorless radioactive substance, can seep into our homes without warning, potentially endangering our health. Denver, with its unique geological composition, is particularly vulnerable to elevated radon levels. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the significance of radon inspection in Denver homes, the health implications of radon exposure, the process of radon inspection, its benefits, and conclude by underscoring the critical importance of prioritizing radon inspection for the well-being of Denver residents.
Understanding the Significance of Radon Inspection
Radon inspection is a proactive measure aimed at detecting the presence of radon gas within a home. Radon is formed from the natural decay of uranium in soil and rocks. It can enter buildings through cracks, gaps, and openings in the foundation, accumulating to hazardous levels. Elevated radon concentrations are linked to an increased risk of lung cancer, making radon inspection an essential component of home safety.
Denver's geological characteristics contribute to its elevated radon risk. The city's proximity to uranium-rich rocks in the Rocky Mountains elevates the potential for radon infiltration. As a result, radon inspection in Denver homes is not just a recommendation—it's a necessity.
Health Implications of Radon Exposure
Radon exposure is associated with significant health risks, particularly when it occurs over an extended period. Radon gas decays into radioactive particles, emitting alpha particles that can damage lung tissue upon inhalation. Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels increases the risk of lung cancer, making early detection and mitigation vital.
Smokers face an even greater risk, as the combination of smoking and radon exposure synergistically amplifies the likelihood of lung cancer. However, non-smokers are not exempt from the dangers of radon exposure. Prioritizing radon inspection is a means of protecting both smokers and non-smokers from this insidious threat.
The Process of Radon Inspection
Radon inspection involves several key steps:
Consultation: Homeowners consult with a certified radon professional to schedule an inspection.
Testing Plan: A testing plan is devised based on the home's characteristics, occupancy patterns, and the preferences of the homeowner.
Placement of Detectors: Radon detectors are placed in the lowest livable area of the home, such as basements or crawl spaces, for a specified testing period.
Data Collection: Passive detectors absorb radon particles, while active detectors continuously sample the air. After the testing period, detectors are collected for analysis.
Analysis and Reporting: Detectors are sent to a laboratory for analysis, and results are provided to the homeowner. The average radon concentration is calculated and compared to recommended safety levels.
Benefits of Radon Inspection in Denver
Health Protection: The primary benefit of radon inspection is safeguarding the health of your family. Identifying elevated radon levels prompts timely mitigation, reducing the risk of lung cancer.
Early Detection: Radon inspection detects elevated radon levels early, allowing homeowners to take corrective action before health risks escalate.
Customized Mitigation: If elevated radon levels are detected, homeowners can collaborate with professionals to devise a targeted mitigation plan tailored to the specific situation.
Peace of Mind: Knowing your home's indoor air quality is safe from radon contamination provides peace of mind and reassurance.
Prioritizing Radon Inspection for Denver Homes
The significance of radon inspection cannot be overstated. By prioritizing radon inspection, Denver homeowners can:
Mitigate Health Risks: Early detection of elevated radon levels leads to timely mitigation, reducing the risk of lung cancer and promoting overall health.
Create a Safer Environment: Radon inspection contributes to a safer living environment, free from the dangers of elevated radon concentrations.
Support Long-Term Well-being: Protecting your family's health today has long-term benefits for their well-being and quality of life.
Conclusion
In conclusion, radon inspection in Denver homes is a critical component of home safety and well-being. The city's geological characteristics elevate the radon risk, underscoring the need for proactive measures. By understanding the significance of radon inspection, the process involved, and the benefits it offers, Denver residents can take proactive steps to mitigate potential health hazards. Prioritizing radon inspection goes beyond surface safety—it's about safeguarding your family's health and creating a safer living environment for years to come. Remember, it's not just a task—it's a commitment to the well-being of your loved ones.

Things that happen at work:
So, today was interesting. By far the most dramatic thing was Work Child 2 coming up to me and starting the conversation with “I need your professional opinion on how to get workmens comp on an injury that might not actually have happened on company time or property.”
And I’m like…not opposed to this depending on very specific circumstances. So I asked “what exactly happened, honey?”
Basically he threw his back out helping the new mechanic get his toolbox into the truck to take the toolbox to the shop and had smoked weed last weekend. Again, all three mitigating factors off company time and property, but still work adjacent. And was also in extreme pain if he turned wrong. Which does actually fit my criteria for helping.
Yeah, so. Basically gave very very very basic medical advice (rotating ice packs and a wet microwaved towel and maybe icy hot packs for tonight) getting a detox kit from a head shop (it’s Denver, you can throw a rock and hit three of them before it lands) and then taking vitamins and eating protein a half hour before any official drug screening, also the local shops sell at home drug test kits.

Radon is really a without color and odor free gas that can be found in high levels in most 50 states. Radon is stated is the gas of decaying uranium in the earth. Radiation amounts of dense Radon gas emissions happen to be measured and discovered to be at an amount that may cause serious health issues with time of steady exposure. During the last twenty years, scientists have grown to be increasingly more away from the problem and also the Environmental protection agency has printed materials to help individuals understand how to make their houses Radon safe through various processes of Radon Minimization.
Radon Mitigation Colorado minimization can be achieved by simply installing air vents to your home. When creating a home, there are other comprehensive methods for accomplishing Radon Minimization. For instance, installing piping in the ground below house that flows to the roof enables Radon gas to become taken and released in to the air over the home. Various devices provide different processes to achieve this. One technique involves soil suction, recording the Radon, and dispelling it elsewhere.
One negative reaction to Radon exposure is cancer of the lung. Many those who have never smoked each day within their life is as much in danger to Radon like a child would be to second hands smoke from the parents. Realizing this enables people to get rid of it. Radon Mitigation Colorado Minimization devices could be installed in your house if testing shows that you're vulnerable to harmful contact with concentrated Radon. Lesson from Brazil: Museums are not forever
by Chip Colwell
Tumblr media
We now know what history going up in flames looks like.
On Sept. 2, the National Museum of Brazil lit up Rio de Janeiro’s night sky. Perhaps started by an errant paper hot air balloon landing on the roof or a short circuit in a laboratory, the fire gutted the historic 200-year-old building. Likely gone are a collection of resplendent indigenous ceremonial robes, the first dinosaur found in South America, Portuguese royal furniture, ancient Egyptian mummies, a vast library and so much more. In six hours, an estimated 18 million artifacts were turned to smoke and ash.
The images of the hollowed-out museum are a living nightmare for a curator like me. I know that most museum collections are truly irreplaceable. But, for me, the fire is also a vital reminder that the greatest dangers to humanity’s collective heritage are not natural disasters but human ones.
There’s an important lesson for all of us in the fire’s embers.
Tumblr media
White walls and imposing columns signal that this place is pristine and eternal. Tamara Menzi/Unsplash, CC BY
The perils museums face
A museum presents itself as permanent and timeless. It’s why so many sport Greek columns, sterile white walls and clean objects under clear glass. The message is that the museum and its treasures should exist beyond the fleeting moment of our visit – connecting past, present and future. Whether displaying dinosaurs or dodos, art or archaeology, the museum is our bank vault for the world’s natural wonders and human achievements. The museum aspires to be a fortress against time.
The reality is that time is inexorable and relentless. Museums are locked in a constant struggle against decay and an almost absurdly wide-ranging array of natural and human threats. There’s even a formal list of the evil-sounding “agents of deterioration” that museums use to evaluate risks to their collections, ranging from bugs to temperature to water to fire.
Tumblr media
Sometimes looted pieces, such as the ‘Warka Mask,’ a 3100 B.C. Sumerian artifact taken from Iraq’s National Museum as Saddam Hussein’s regime collapsed, are recovered. Oftentimes they are not. AP Photo/Samir Mezban
These risks are constantly evolving. War might turn a museum overnight into a looter’s paradise, as in the case of the National Museum of Iraq. Market forces or colonial revenge may spur thieves to steal artifacts, as recently seen with a pandemic of thefts of Chinese art. Some are even adding climate change to the menaces facing collections, such as the Bass Museum along Miami Beach, as it prepares for rising sea levels.
For museum curators, a terrifying range of hazards could devastate the treasures we are appointed to safeguard. Tragically, fire has long been at the top of the list. As early as 1865, the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. – “America’s attic,” as it is famously known – caught aflame, resulting in what was then called a “national calamity.” In more recent years, infernos destroyed Madagascar’s royal palace museum, Delhi’s natural history museum and a history museum in Washington state, which housed rare artifacts from the late musician Kurt Cobain.
Despite the known risk of fire, reports suggest that Brazil’s National Museum was woefully unprepared. It apparently lacked a fire suppression system. Nearby fire hydrants went dry.
The spark that started the fire was perhaps an unforeseen event, but the conflagration that followed was not.
Tumblr media

Collections don’t care for themselves
Most hazards that endanger museums can be mitigated. Conservation programs can hunt artifact-eating bugs, storage rooms can control temperature and humidity, security systems can prevent burglary and more. But implementing such protections requires serious resources.
By all accounts, this is where Brazil’s caretakers failed. As a national museum, Brazil’s elected officials were responsible for directing the appropriate funds to the museum. Instead, they underfunded the museum and allowed it to fall into disrepair. With the proper buildings and equipment, Brazil’s museum fire would likely not have been so disastrous.
Such indifference is not limited to Brazil. For example, a 2016 report found that Canada’s six national museums are underfunded by about US$60 million each year. In the United States, President Trump’s 2019 fiscal year budget sought to entirely eliminate three vital federal agencies – the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts and Institute of Museum and Library Services – that preserve much of the country’s cultural heritage in museums. Congress, however, passed a spending bill in 2018 that modestly increased funding for all three agencies.

From Brazil, those holding the purse strings on citizens’ behalf must learn that museums are not forever. Collections are never permanently safe. They require focused investments and proactive stewardship to ensure their survival long into the future. Otherwise, it’s only a matter of time before the next fire.
This article has been updated to clarify 2018 U.S. budget allocation for museum-related agencies.

A REPORT FROM AN ASTEROID, A REPORT FROM THE ROAD
I’ve been chasing an asteroid for the past couple of months. On October 20th, I directed live coverage of NASA’s first attempt to make contact with an asteroid 200 million miles away, capture a sample, and bring it back to Earth. The program utilized nine live cameras, including five in the the Mission Support Area, or “MSA” (essentially the project’s “mission control”), a pile of super-talented guests, an even bigger pile of stunning graphics and animations, and a million edgy government, corporate, and university stakeholders.
In a word: extraordinary.
Here’s another word: thrilling.
Of course, this whole endeavor meant that I had to leave the safe confines of my home just outside of Washington DC, a place from which I’ve rarely ventured since the start of the pandemic in March. Once ensconced in the MSA on the outskirts of Denver, I worked shoulder to shoulder with a huge group of superb videographers, TV engineers, animators, producers, on-camera talent, NASA scientists, and anything-but-ordinary spacecraft engineers and flight controllers. Not only were cast and crew obligated to get close to each other and lean in to shared tasks, but as the chief cook and bottle washer, I was also the primary point person for myriad decisions negotiated with government leadership, corporate execs, academic heavyweights, creatives, the technical crew, and….
…that’s all fine by me. That’s what I do. The problem was, in this case, that it all happened during a major pandemic stalking the nation, invisible among us, hiding in the community, waiting for a mistake or a misstep from just a single tired, distracted, or complacent person so that it could latch on, get inside, and burn through the team. A positive test would not only have jeopardized the whole television production (you can check that out here), but it would also have jeopardized the whole mission itself. Imagine the terrible consequences if key players in spacecraft operations and scientific investigations were laid up fighting COVID-19. The obligations of mutual regard were not simply a good idea, or an ethically grounded strategy, or even a moment of obviously appropriate reciprocity. The obligations that everyone took the virus seriously during our long working days as well as the spaces we travelled outside the MSA had massive consequences to a mission that had taken nearly 20 years to reach this moment, shaped dozens of superstar careers, and consumed many million of dollars of investment.
Our behavior surrounding OSIRIS-REx was a microcosm of how the larger society might regard collective behavior for just about every other aspect of American life. Nobody likes the virus, but that doesn’t mean the virus cares what we think. If we can send a probe to collect a sample of the ancient solar system 200 million miles away, we can certainly figure out how to collect samples of saliva or snot here on Earth to determine who’s positive and who isn’t. We can certainly take steps to mitigate the spread of something that simply requires us to care about putting our shared daily lives—and our dreams for all sorts of future endeavors—back together again.
At the end of each long day, I climbed into my rental Chevrolet and sighed relief when I yanked my mask off and took a deep breath.  The short eight mile drive back to my hotel across an arrow straight stretch of golden American West lifted me every day. Sure, fires were burning out of control on the Colorado horizon, with smoke plumes rising elegantly into the sky; from my distant vantage, they pretended to be nothing more than unusually thick, luxurious clouds glinting orange and pink in the setting Colorado sun. The virus lurked, perhaps as close to me as the car one lane over on the highway; it never left my consciousness. There were no evening meals with team members, considering that we all needed to try and keep our distance whenever we could. Away from the MSA there were only sporadic moments of socialization, often outside, relatively brief, limited in proximity.  There was also exhaustion aplenty, with powerfully long days pursued at full speed, intense stretches of homework and show prep waiting for me at the little table in my hotel room, and the promise of much more to come with the sunrise as we got closer to the show.
And with all this, the virus, the fires, the social distancing, the masks, the precautions, the pressure, the limited sleep, the thousand things to do and the million interpersonal nuances that needed careful care and attention, there’s only one thing to say about the whole adventure: it was glorious to be out in the world again.
COVID-19 has caused more damage than just its medical ramifications. We are isolated from each other, skittish, agitated, tired…and you know this already. What the implications of all that will be, however, are hard to project. In our isolation, we are out of touch with each other. We are not reading faces and expressions as well—first, because we see fewer people these days, and second, because when we do see others, we’re looking at only their eyes peeking above their masks, and then often from uncomfortable distances.
“Alls well that ends well” is a weak ethical position, employed by half-hour sitcoms designed to exude artificial morality and stability in the world. The fact that everyone seemed to come away from the assignment without infection is hardly proof that everyone did the right thing.  “Alls well that ends well” is no way to mitigate the pandemic. Like a big, complicated, live broadcast, there is no way to succeed except to sweat the details, stay disciplined, roll with surprises, and keep on keepin’ on.
Come to think of it, that’s the only way to successfully pursue a big interplanetary mission, too. What we do to pursue our boldest exploratory and scientific initiatives can serve as guidance about how to handle all sorts of tough things.
I’m a media producer. I make things. I’m an artist first and foremost. The fact that I can translate science and engineering stories to mainstream audiences is beside the point: you definitely don’t want me on your flight team sending technical commands to your spacecraft. (“I’m not a flight controller, but I play one on TV.”) With OSIRIS-REx I was on a grand adventure—I enjoyed it immensely, to tell the truth—but I must report that the entire week simultaneously filled me with nagging dread. So many aspects of the careful discipline I had employed in preceding months were forced to yield to imperturbable necessities for producing and directing a complex, live show about an extraordinary scientific expedition. What fills me now, writing these words from my basement while I quarantine from my family, is an awareness that the OSIRIS-REx team demonstrated an equivalent discipline so they could keep their own mission on track despite the pandemic.  It is precisely the same level of discipline that enabled our production team to get its job done producing the story for a worldwide audience.
My journey back to DC started with a crowded airport in Denver and continued with a packed airplane for more than three hours. I wasn’t happy. Now home, I’ll confess that prior to taking the gig in the first place, the pandemic made me woefully reluctant to say “yes”. That’s not natural for me; my instinct is to look at a mountain peak and imagine myself climbing up. To feel whole I don’t simply enjoy opportunities to mix with the world;  I require them. I need to see, to share, to experience things that influence me and that I can similarly influence. I need to taste and touch and hear and smell and even just consider new ideas as much as I need to sleep and eat and breathe. I need to make stuff. As a result, I’ll confess that this whole mission filled me like the waters of life. But even with the fading glow of extraordinary success, I cannot claim with certainty that it was a good choice. “Alls well that ends well” does not confer a badge of responsible decision-making. Life is complicated.
Now…matters are worse. Infections rates are climbing like a rocket. The nation teeters on the brink of self-induced immolation, and I’m terribly blue about what portends for the future. But I’m also extremely lucky. I’m thankful. I realize the asymmetry of my life measured against the pain of so many others. OSIRIS-REx is a shining light in the darkness, a story of how dedicated teams can figure out ways to pull together and do extraordinary things despite obstacles. As I consider the coming winter season, a time I’ve often spent thinking about new productions, new projects, new strategies, I cannot help but keep in mind that the solar system continues to revolve around its golden star. Dreams about what’s possible and what we desire are the reasons we all get up to face each day. Actions are what we do to make those dreams come to life.

AFTERWORD:
1) For more info about the OSIRIS-REx mission, including status updates about the spacecraft’s planned journey back to Earth, visit the project’s main site.
2) In 2007 I made a short film for NASA about the OSIRIS mission when it was in its early planning stages. (It didn’t have the “REx” component in its name at that time). It runs about seven minutes, and you can check it out here. The credits listed on the web page are somewhat incomplete. The credits in the film…are accurate. 😏

Most of the benefits of marijuana drugs are related to the health issues that are brought in by the special element known as cannabinoids this drug. More on Cannabis
Marijuana can be taken in from of edibles or in form of smoking.
Documented work done in the past illustrate that legalised marijuana has benefits both in the income of a country as well as human health, other than the benefits the use of marijuana needs proper .
Research by scientist across the globe done in the past indicates a high recovery rate from conditions such as nausea by patients who used cannabis.
Other studies throughout the period illustrates that marijuana consumption is closely or directly associated with increasing food consumption and weight gain.
Multiple research work also shows that marijuana consumption can help spinal cord patients who are experiencing muscles pains and have difficulties in sleeping.
in other research work it has been documented that patients with epileptic conditions often suffer from inadequate cannabinoid elements in their body which can be corrected by proper use of marijuana.
Use of vaporised marijuana is also linked to the reduction of severe pain especially for patients with chronically medical conditions and syndrome though medical advice is recommended to control the use of this drugs. More details on Denver
Cannabis is also said to be effective in reduction of headaches, pain associated with the bladder and ulcers
Cannabis is also said to be a key relief to depression, depression needs to be controlled in order to mitigate further damage in the body system.
Cannabis is also a key relief to patients with sleeping problems and extreme nightmares as well as inflammatory conditions in the skin.
Marijuana is also known to be illegal in most countries of the world even though its use can lead to the healing process of patients suffering from liver and brain tumour, it also play a key role in the reduction of prostate cancer.
Marijuana can also aid in the treatment of cerebral malaria which is a parasitic disease mainly transmitted by mosquitoes to human beings and in most occasions it may lead to a serious coma.
Studies conducted in eighties also shows that cannabis has a way of increasing sexual performance of both male and female.
As we come to an end more and more empirical studies are being conducted on merits of this drugs however certain counties have adopted the medical use of this drugs.

Home Sharing and ‘Grandkids on Demand’ Startups Eye Home Health Synergies
Aging in place can create isolation and loneliness for seniors, but startups such as Papa and Silvernest are working in an effort to combat these complex problems. They are eager to interface with home health providers in more meaningful ways, and are planning to do so in the near future.
Silvernest is a home sharing app, similar in some ways to Airbnb, that pairs older adults with roommates. Through Papa, college students provide in-home services to seniors. Both these companies believe that they can help mitigate loneliness and isolation, which can compromise older adults’ health and wellbeing in serious ways.
“Social isolation has the potential negative consequences on health equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day,” Majd Alwan, senior vice president of technology at Leading Age and executive director of the Center for Aging Services Technologies (CAST), told Home Health Care News.
Washington, D.C.-based LeadingAge is a trade association representing 6,000 providers that work in aging, mostly nonprofits. CAST is an international coalition of 400 technology companies, aging services organizations, research universities and government representatives, working to develop, evaluate and adopt technologies to improve the aging experience.
Silvernest and Papa have focused specifically on the potential to forge partnerships with the health care and in-home care industries, showcasing their business models to providers and pushing further into the sector.
Living with aging
There are a lot of empty bedrooms out there, which is partially what sparked the creation of Silvernest, Wendi Burkhardt, CEO and co-founder of the company, told HHCN.
Denver-based Silvernest is a home-sharing startup that was founded in 2015. The company offers a platform that pairs homeowners with roommates. Homeowners pay a fee when ready to communicate with their matches. The fee covers 60 days of communication with those potential roommates. Silvernest currently has nearly 50,000 users and listings in all 50 states.
Older adults who are wishing to age in place and faced with rising living costs are beginning to participate and notice the value of the sharing economy by using what are typically their biggest assets, their homes, to generate extra income, Burkhardt said.
Silvernest is exploring possible partnerships with in-home care providers.
“We believe there is an interesting opportunity to partner with home health agencies to create a win-win on both sides,” Burkhardt said. “We are currently exploring collaborative partnerships with several home health agencies and look forward to sharing more details in the coming months.”
Major home care companies such as Home Instead acknowledge that there is not a single type of home environment that is best for all seniors.
“As our population ages, it is going to take a variety of living environments and creative solutions to support older adults on their aging journey,” Lakelyn Hogan, a gerontologist and caregiver advocate at Home Instead, said in an email to HHCN. “It is important for families to have conversations with the older adult about the living environment that best fits their needs.”
Nebraska-based Home Instead is an in-home care network that provides personalized care, support and education to help aging adults. The franchisor has over 1,300 locations providing over 70 million hours of care throughout the United States and 11 other countries.
Finding friends, help where you can
Miami-based Papa is a startup that utilizes “grandkids on demand” to offer seniors services such as transportation, meeting household needs and companionship. Papa employs college students, known as Papa Pals, as the caregivers that perform the services. The company uses a strict on-boarding process to make sure the students are empathetic, patient and trustworthy.
Many Americans experience feelings of loneliness but younger generations are reportedly lonelier than any other, according to the 2018 U.S. Loneliness Index from Cigna.
“Our goal is to cure loneliness; we find that companionship is this broad concept but when you [join] these two generations there is a natural connectivity that’s occurring,” Andrew Parker, founder and CEO at Papa, told HHCN.
The average loneliness score for Generation Z is 48.3 while the score for Boomers is 42.4, according to the index. Loneliness is measured by a 20-item questionnaire developed by UCLA to assess feelings of social isolation and loneliness. Loneliness is identified by a score of 43 or higher, with higher scores meaning higher levels of loneliness.
Papa is in the process of expanding from Florida to Pittsburgh and has plans to expand to additional locations in the U.S. throughout next year.
Currently, Papa works more locally in terms of partnerships with in-home care agencies, but it has bigger partnerships planned, Parker said.
“[Partnerships] are across the board,” said Parker. “But most of the partnerships, in terms of expansion, will be with health [insurance] plans. [Partnerships are] based on opportunities to bring our services to customers but it doesn’t have to be one type of organization—home care companies, home health companies, hospital systems and senior living facilities [are all in the mix].”
Age in the future
As more people age, the future of the in-home care industry may be technology-forward in order to ease the workload of home health nurses and home care aides.
“Such applications [like Silvernest and Papa], if embraced and adopted at scale, can be a game changer—turning technology from a ‘need’ into a ‘want’ for older adults,” Alwan said.
However, as startups begin to notice opportunities to grow into the home health space, it is necessary to recognize the differences between older adults and other users, and occasionally make small changes to overall user experience.
“[Startups] should know that older adults can and will use technology for socialization and entertainment, but the technology must be made intuitive and easy to use,” Alwan said. “Technology can support continued communication between older adult, their family and can help maintain and even expand social network through digital social connectedness.”
Creating a new circle for an older adult does not have a clear solution but an important aspect of the problem is knowing how to define it.
“It is important to make the differentiation between isolation and loneliness,” Hogan said. “Isolation is when a person does not have enough people to interact with, and loneliness is distress over not having enough social relationships or not enough contact with people. Someone can be isolated but still feel very connected and someone who is well connected can still feel lonely.”

praNa Takes Lead in Reviving Hemp Clothing
In the mid-’90s, hemp bracelets and necklaces were ubiquitous among students and cannabis activists. Shirts, jeans, jackets and sneakers made from hemp showed up in shops across the country. High Times opened a store called Planet Hemp in downtown Manhattan.
But the hemp-clothing bubble didn’t last. Companies like Ecolution, Crucial Creations and Ohio Hempery closed their doors. The problem was high costs and inferior hemp imported from countries like China and Romania.
One current company that’s making stylish and practical hemp clothing is the Carlsbad, Calif.-based prAna. Founders and outdoor enthusiasts Beaver and Pam Theodosakis have been selling clothing for 24 years since starting the business in their garage. Their extensive line is available at prana.com and at retail stores like REI, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Eastern Mountain Sports, as well as their own prAna stores in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and El Segundo, Calif.; Denver and Boulder, Colo.; Portland, Ore.; and Edina, Wash.
“Our founders were introduced to hemp decades ago and always followed its development in apparel,” Andre Walker, who oversees brand engagement and partnerships at prAna, tells Freedom Leaf. “They realized very early on the benefits of the fiber and the minimal environmental impact the plant caused, which has kept it on our design and materials list.”
(function($){ function bsaProResize() { var sid = "12"; var object = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__img"); var animateThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProAnimateThumb"); var innerThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__thumb"); var parentWidth = "772"; var parentHeight = "105"; var objectWidth = object.width(); if ( objectWidth < parentWidth ) { var scale = objectWidth / parentWidth; if ( objectWidth > 0 && objectWidth != 100 && scale > 0 ) { animateThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); innerThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); object.height(parentHeight * scale); } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } } $(document).ready(function(){ bsaProResize(); $(window).resize(function(){ bsaProResize(); }); }); })(jQuery); (function ($) { var bsaProContainer = $('.bsaProContainer-12'); var number_show_ads = "0"; var number_hide_ads = "0"; if ( number_show_ads > 0 ) { setTimeout(function () { bsaProContainer.fadeIn(); }, number_show_ads * 1000); } if ( number_hide_ads > 0 ) { setTimeout(function () { bsaProContainer.fadeOut(); }, number_hide_ads * 1000); } })(jQuery);
prAna founders Beaver and Pam Theodosakis
That list includes organic cotton, recycled polyester and spandex, which are blended with Chinese-grown hemp and made into shorts, pants, skirts, dresses, sweaters, scarves and headbands.
There are many reasons hemp products should be on any eco-conscious consumer’s Top 10 buy list. Hemp replenishes rather than depletes soil and is a bioremediator, meaning it removes toxins from the soil and stores them in the hardy stalks. Hemp also uses fewer water and land resources, enabling farmers to earn more on their crops, and is bacteria-inhibiting, thermo-conductive, fast drying and incredibly durable compared to other fibers.
Twenty years after the first hemp boom, clothing made from cannabis is finally finding a home in the outdoor retail sector. The major clothing chain Patagonia offers a selection of hemp clothing, and retail behemoth Amazon has a relatively limited selection of utilitarian hemp clothes, like T-shirts and socks.
“Hemp doesn’t have any predators, so it’s very easy to grow and requires little to no pesticides or chemicals,” praNa’s Andre Walker explains. “Some farmers in China will actually grow hemp around their crop to protect it from pests and predators.”
In order to eliminate hemp’s somewhat scratchy natural texture, it’s frequently blended. “Hemp’s natural performance features mitigate the need for harsh chemical finishes that are used on alternative fibers to get the same performance features,” adds Walker, who sees California’s legalization of cannabis as a game-changer.
“California should be a true tipping point, as the clear economic, medical and social benefits happening in Colorado can be replicated on a much larger scale. Our customers have always been interested in sustainable materials, and we expect to increase the number of hemp styles as we continue to grow this segment.”
Hemp yoga capris is a popular item in prAna’s catalog.
Although no reasonable person would attempt to smoke a hemp shirt, vendors operating in the hemp industry have nevertheless faced some of the same problems that businesses working with psychoactive marijuana encounter. In October, Umpqua Bank terminated the account of Washington-based hemp clothing and paper retailer Rawganique because it operated in an “excluded line of business.” The conflict was eventually resolved in Rawganique’s favor, but it points to the continued legal murkiness facing hemp businesses.
However, it seems progress is being made. Also in October, Omaha, Neb.-based Bastcore, owner of a decorticator that separates fibers from hemp stalks, announced it would supply Recreator, a California-based hemp clothing company. This deal is an important milestone because Bastcore gets its hemp from Colorado, Kentucky and Minnesota, giving companies like prAna the heretofore-denied opportunity to use hemp made in the U.S.
As it currently stands, the potential for versatile, affordable and fashionable hemp clothing for the masses has yet to be realized. Walker believes hemp legalization is the antidote. “Hemp needs to be legal on state and federal levels to really make an impact in the U.S.,” he contends. “Consumers are more and more aware of the value of the plant and are requesting it not only in apparel, but in a number of other industries.”
