Map of the disputed territory of Acre, claimed by Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, before a settlement where Brazil purchased the land.
The territory of Acre was recognized by Brazil as Bolivian, despite Peru also claiming the land. Tensions rose in the late 19th century however as the Amazon region became economically important due to the rubber boom, with many Brazilian settlers occupying lands in the Amazon to work on rubber extraction.
Bolivia lacked a military presence or its own settlers in the region, causing a huge influx of Brazilians that dominated the territory. Those Brazilians resented Bolivian attempts to tax or regulate them, and on three occasions rose up against Bolivia to establish an independent state and seek annexation into Brazil.
This caused a huge diplomatic incident between the countries that was resolved in 1903, with Bolivia agreeing to transfer the territory to Brazil in exchange for infrastructure works, financial compensation and access to the Amazon River to reach the Atlantic. A few years later Brazil reached an agreement with Peru for recognition of Brazilian sovereignty in Acre and the delimitation of borders between the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazons.

I’m still furious at the Brazil mess so I’m sorry if this is incoherent but holy fuck!!!! Im not saying this to minimize Ana’s death, but another person was shot and killed before the concert, and over 1000 people were injured during it as well!! I don’t care whether it was strictly her, the venue, of her team making decisions none of that should’ve happened. They banned outside water, closed the air vents so people in the parking lot couldn’t hear for free, used pyrotechnics even though fans begged her not to make the already 100 degree heat worse. The fact that over A THOUSAND people fainted or were burned by the venues metal grates and she did nothing to stop it and nothing afterward!!! Brazil is one of the places being hit by global warming the hardest and she did all this shit during the hottest time of year, AND flew back and forth between Brazil and her home every night instead of staying in a hotel. She’s been one of if not the biggest individual contributors to pollution for the past 2 years!! Indirectly and directly she is to blame for all this and I think she knows it. It’s probably why she couldn’t muster more than a “I’m so sad don’t msg :(“ insta story post and purposely skipped all her other shows quiet moments. It’s clear she doesn’t care about her fans, especially fans of color. I hope everyone at that concert sues for negligence.
no worries its not incoherent at all!
her negligence was deliberate. idc what any swiftie says she is responsible to a certain extent of the venue and she definitely 100% has the power to make sure none of that shit happened. but she knew and didn’t care (and she definitely knew because they also told her of ana’s death). a moral human being would stop the show and make sure the conditions were liveable and SAFE to be in during a concert but she knew she already had everyone’s $ so she just went on anyways. and i don’t doubt the fact her negligence was aided by the fact that brazil isn’t a wealthy white western country so she wouldn’t face as much backlash. can you imagine if this happened in the U.S. with a girl that looked just like her? her tour would be cancelled. & you’re not minimizing ana’s death at all, you’re just giving proper context to the horrific situation and letting us know her death wasn’t spontaneous but a direct result of the neglectful and actively dangerous conditions. and then to top this all off with her flying to/from her LA home like what a way to say fuck you to her brazilian fans. im so sorry this happened and her racism is undeniable and fatal

Lula's South American summit plan unlikely in tense region, diplomats say
Tumblr media
A diplomatic crisis in Ecuador and uncertainty over Venezuela's political future have divided South American nations and killed enthusiasm for a summit that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is trying to convene, diplomats in the region say.
Seeking to become a regional leader again, Lula gathered 11 presidents in Brazil's capital last May, but the forum called the Brasilia Consensus was struck by disagreement over the presence of Venezuela's authoritarian President Nicolas Maduro.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric, a fellow leftist from a younger generation, criticized Lula for inviting Maduro to a meeting of democratic leaders, as did Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou.
With concerns about Venezuelan elections in July and fallout from Ecuador's invasion of the Mexican embassy to seize an opposition politician, the region is too unsettled for a fresh attempt at dialogue, diplomats in Brazil and Uruguay said.
