Hey, I remember you mentioning on your IG something about two types of popular artists and one being good at social media and the other being good at art or something like that (I can't really remember lol). But it got me thinking, any tips for how to be good at social media? Cuz I'm certainly not even after posting art for six years lol
Heya!
What I meant by that is that there are traits that allow you to grow on social media, and traits that determine what a highly skilled artist is, and those traits do not always necessarily overlap.
I've seen so many amazing artists that post artwork that blow my head off, and yet they don't have many likes. On the other hand, some artists at the same skill level who draw more popular things will get way more attention.
That is not to say that either is the correct way to create art, but there is definitely a formula to social media that is in play.
There are a lot of posts about how to grow a social media account, particularly on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram art spheres, and imo you really need to examine what you want from your art before jumping into social media mode
The stuff you create to pander to social media might not be art that you want to create at all - I'm lucky, because I am less artist more storyteller, and what I enjoy is telling jokes and silly stories to liven up people's moods :] this, of course, conveniently does well on social media. On a personal note, I have a history of being a recluse and not connecting well with people, and art is my way of trying to communicate my feelings, one way or another.
So of course, if you draw for any reason other than my own, my approach to art and it's relation to social media might be inappropriate for you.
All that being said, if u take a look at those "get big on social media" videos they always cite the same few points... And you can look into that, for sure, but this video sums up how I feel about all that.
I spent like 20 minutes drafting words after the above paragraph, but I really ended up regurgitating sentiments from the video... So really don't listen to me, listen to that video
EDIT:
I just realised I didnt actually answer the question with my anecdotal experience, so here's a list of things I did
1. Posted like 3 doodles a day on social media
I did this for 6 months on a side account on Twitter recently and got the account to 11k followers... And I did this for 3 months on Instagram a few years ago and I think got 3.5k followers. Of course, do not spam maliciously and make sure your art is still of good quality, but for those artworks I posted quickly, I did not colour, and mostly did clean sketches. This also trains you in the matter of line confidence haha. Again, this worked for me because of my set of circumstances (love for the media, want to tell stories, simple art style)
2. Focus on my favourite aspects of media
This helps with respect to burnout - kinda hard to burnout when you love what you're making! For me, it's character interactions and comics. I want to see my blorbos kiss and if I'm not the one drawing it who will?!
3. Interact with people
People eat up work that they can interact with. A choose your own story situation, one of those like/rt to strip a character 😭 those do numbers for a reason.
Additionally, if you post stuff people love, people will respond to it with comments, maybe their own headcanons, adding on to the work... I've gone into long looong Twitter thread conversations with people who added onto my ideas that I threw up onto the screen and I think it's also a nice thing to do to respond to positive comments haha... I'm not very good at this (read: bad at communication)
I think that's the key points... Hope this helps!

oh I hate twt so much hate it hate it hate itttttt turns out when you block people and just don't go online - shitty stupid things still get said, still get believed, still get a disgusting amount of likes and me who removed myself from the cesspool to be a happier, sane, nuanced person can only watch on as that many people run around an echo chamber parroting nothing of their own thought 💀 never wanted to have the ability to reach through the screen and shake people like I have lately but no I'll settle for closing the app and having a rant before bed. peace and love to my small corners of the internet that are still sane 🫰🏽

Hey men, uh I have a question....where do some of y'all get the confidence (and delusion) to continue talking to someone who is clearly either uninterested or uncomfortable by your presence?
And follow-up question, why do you keep said confidence and go on to ask repeatedly for that person's contact information? Like...what is the point of ignoring obvious body language? I know you notice it, you're not stupid. So why insist on pursuing an uninterested target and actively choose to hurt your own feelings when it's so easy to read the room and just say "Alright well have a nice night" and move the hell on to someone who might actually want your company? Just curious. 🙃

I am very grateful recently, I feel like I am a part of Witcher community on tumblr now. It's been 2?? Years? (I don't know at this point) and I feel so happy to have active mutuals who interact with me :'). I especially feel so happy because I've never really felt so comfortable being so vocal about my special interests to others, now I do.
Offering you all fresh bread and homemade bilberry jam or soup or something <3 thankyou for bringing me joy

A Tale of Two Social Media Paths: Choosing Between Enthusiast and Influencer
Tumblr media
Creating a compelling presence on social media can take many forms, with the roles of “enthusiast” and “influencer” being two distinct approaches. Understanding the differences between these roles can help shape your strategy and online persona. Let’s delve into what these terms mean, exemplify each with prominent figures like Marques Brownlee for the enthusiast role, and then provide insights into which approach might be more suitable for different goals.
Social Media Enthusiast vs. Influencer
Social Media Enthusiast:
Focus: Enthusiasts are primarily driven by their passion for a particular subject or field. They share content out of genuine interest and engagement with the topic.
Engagement: Their interactions are often more about sharing knowledge and less about promoting products or brands.
Audience Connection: Enthusiasts typically build a community based on shared interests, fostering deeper, more meaningful connections.
Example: Marques Brownlee, known as MKBHD, is a quintessential enthusiast. His content focuses on tech reviews and news. Brownlee’s approach is grounded in his genuine passion for technology and gadgets, making his reviews and insights highly trusted and respected in the tech community.
Social Media Influencer:
Focus: Influencers often create content with a more commercial angle, frequently collaborating with brands to promote products or services.
Engagement: Their content can range across various topics, with a significant focus on lifestyle, fashion, travel, or similar areas.
Audience Connection: Influencers build their community based on lifestyle aspirations and personality appeal.
Example: A classic influencer example is someone like Kylie Jenner, who uses her platform to promote beauty products, fashion, and her own brands, leveraging her large following for commercial purposes.
Which Approach is Better?
The choice between being a social media enthusiast and an influencer largely depends on your personal goals, interests, and the kind of audience you want to engage with:
Authenticity and Passion: If you are deeply passionate about a specific niche (like technology, in Marques Brownlee’s case) and wish to share your knowledge and excitement without a strong commercial drive, the enthusiast path is more suitable.
Commercial and Brand Opportunities: If you are interested in leveraging your social media presence for commercial opportunities, brand collaborations, and influencing consumer behaviors, the influencer route may be more appropriate.
Long-Term Engagement: Enthusiasts often build a more niche but loyal and engaged audience. This can lead to long-term sustainability, especially if you are looking to establish yourself as a thought leader in a particular area.
Wide Appeal: Influencers may reach a broader audience and achieve rapid growth, particularly if they tap into trending topics, lifestyle aspirations, and have a charismatic persona.
Ultimately, whether to be a social media enthusiast or an influencer depends on your personal interests, goals, and the type of community you want to build. Enthusiasts like Marques Brownlee thrive on authenticity and deep engagement in a specific field, while influencers like Kylie Jenner leverage a broader appeal and commercial partnerships. Both paths offer unique opportunities and challenges, and the best choice.

I just realized it today. In the last two years I’ve had the most meaningful, the most honest, the most beautiful, the most inspiring and the funniest conversations right here on tumblr rather than in rl. I don’t know if that’s sad or if rl just sucked these last two years. Maybe it’s the magic of fandoms and the world wide web because suddenly there’s really someone and a place for everyone.
I think that’s the beauty of places like tumblr. No matter how long it takes, eventually you’ll find a connection with someone. Eventually you’ll find a place where you can experience this unique feeling of just belonging without having to bend and pretend to be someone else. I love the fact that all these things that matter in rl are just a little less important here. I love the freedom that this allows me and I hope you feel that too from time to time.

Not to be dramatic or anything but I literally have the funniest, cleverest, sweetest little siblings. They make their own video games on scratch and love listening to music and telling me about their favorite games and telling me jokes and scenarios they thought of. I can't imagine why anyone would dislike kids and I can't imagine not straight up having fun hanging out with them and listening to them laugh.

cohost users: 20 thousand cohost subs: 3300
one in six cohost users is a subscriber (unbelievably high; awesome!). they're like a third of the way to breaking even.
tumblr users: 125 million tumblr ad-free subs: 28 thousand
one in five thousand tumblr users is a subscriber. they... don't release that level of info.
hmm. I guess I don't have any more interesting insight to first-order-approximate from these. cohost is, to my extremely limited understanding, like four people who take something like half market rate for being full time web developers and also doing a bunch of other jobs, and don't have moderation/safety costs (yay self-selected community!) or a phone app. the obvious question is how much you would have to scale that up to paint a realistic picture of what you would need to run a site with tumblr's scale and tumblr's quality and with the level of moderation it has now, let alone what people generally wish for, but I certainly can't. and I have no idea how much money tumblr brings in from ads besides "not nearly enough."
(for the record, I don't know a lot about cohost—or pillowfort—besides that cohost's jae is an excellent communicator and their financial posts on the staff blog there are a great read, and that both sites seem at a glance to Actually Work Now. nice!)

The union conference was fun and enjoyable and I didn't die, now I have an emotional hangover.
I want to say I acted way out of character from my usual self. Actually joked with people saying "The person you are seeing here this week is not how I am at home". I didn't just speak up readily but I did so confidently and without hedging or hesitating. I didn't finch away from speaking in front of crowds or offering my point of view, even on mic in the lecture hall sessions. I didn't hide in my room or in a tucked away space to avoid people between classes, I purposely talked to new people and went out to the social events.
I even took an idea I have for something the Union might be interested in and chatted with the director of the program about it, and she liked the idea enough she was going to take it the other department heads so !!! I guess I'll see if it's implemented.
And so many people sought me out to compliment me for sharing what I knew and to talk to me because they liked that I was ready to speak up, or to ask me for suggestions on learning more. I got more compliments this week than I have in my 8 years as a union member, it was overwhelming.
Maybe I was acting out of character, but that isn't a bad thing. Maybe it's time to reevaluate and change my characteristics.
