Join us on Monday 26 September @ 4-6pm (UK) @ Kensal Library 20 Golborne Road, London W10 5PF When we invite you to spend time with members of Kelso's family, Millicent and Wayne Christian, hear their reflections and how Kelso has shaped their lives and to make suggestions about what we should include in it. We are also keen to get local people involved in shaping and expanding this archive.
The Kelso Cochrane Archive was established in 2019 at Kensal Library as part of the 60th Anniversary commemoration of his death. The archive is intended to celebrate the dynamic, incomparable history and heritage of North Kensington. It is hoped that it will be a living archive, it will grow and be a place to be fascinated, educated, angered and motivated by the stories that have shows who we are, not only locally but beyond our borders. We have set up the Kelso Cochrane archive so that his name will live on for all generations to reflect upon his life and times and our collective journey the good, the bad and the ugly. Photos taken in the central courtyard of Lincoln Cathedral after watching the final show of The Hunchback of Notre Dame on Saturday night. Fantastic show and a rare opportunity to see inside the Cathedral at night. The Gothic is my favourite architectural style, and a pivotal symbol of Lincolnshire's history. #architecture #gothic #gothicstyle #gothicarchitecture #cathedral #lincoln #lincolnshire #lincolncathedral #lincolnshirelife #history #socialhistory #art #theatre #hunchbackofnotredame #lincolnshirecountryside #lincolnheritage #lincolncity #Christianity #christianhistory #medieval #medievalhistory #medievalart #medievalarchitecture #photography #architectural #architecturalphotography #architecturalhistory #historian (at Lincoln Cathedral) https://www.instagram.com/p/CedhZCXo5Cf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

📣🎉TOMORROW📣🎉 My latest digital exhibition, 'By The Cut of Their Cloth', curated with @themixedmuseum launches Weds 15th June! Part of @brentmuseumandarchives @brentcultureservice @brentcouncil #BeingBrent programme, it explores Brent's rich multicultural and mixed-race histories. @heritagefunduk @tnluk @nationallotterygoodcauses Spanning 300 years of Brent’s #MixedRace and #Multicultural #History through the lenses of #art #photography and #fashion, ‘By The Cut of Their Cloth’ (BTCOTC) is an exhibition curated by local #artist and #designer, Warren Reilly (BA Hons) and The Mixed Museum. Inspired by Warren Reilly's 2018 dissertation, ‘Pageboys to protégés’ and Dr Chamion Caballero’s interest in the unnamed sitters in the Petersen Collection at Glamorgan Archives, BTCOTC explores Brent’s rich multicultural and mixed-race histories. In particular, it continues in the tradition of the #Brent2020: #londonboroughofculture project ‘Fashioning our History’ by using fashion as a lens to look at marginalised #socialhistories. We have been thrilled by the interest shown in the project since its start and we are delighted to now be able to share the wonderful #material we have #collected with you. We hope that the #images and #familyhistories #uncovered by the project, as well as the outputs created, will help us all think about how we can open up and enrich Britain’s archives – whether #local or #national – so that a wider and fuller range of the family histories that make up #Britishhistory can inform us and be enjoyed by us all, now and in the future. We hope that BTCOTC will not only help bring attention to Brent's long history of #racialmixing but also show that the histories of ‘#ordinarypeople‘ are just as fascinating and valuable a resource as the stories of more well-known or #influential #people who are typically included in #archive and #museum #collections. 🎉📣BTCOTC ONLINE EXHIBITION LAUNCHES WEDNESDAY 15TH JUNE 📣🎉 📸 Featuring photography by @nadianervoprojects wearing @simonerocha_ 📸 BTCOTC CREATED BY @themixedmuseum @wr.designs_ @wr.fineart FUNDED BY @nationallotterygoodcauses @heritagefunduk @tnluk SUPPORTED BY @brentmuseumandarchives (at London Borough of Brent) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeyvnkXNSqc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On This Day in New York City History February 11, 1897: The White Rose Mission (also known as the White Rose Home for Colored Working Girls and the White Rose Industrial Association) was established in New York City on 97th Street in what is now the Upper East Side.
The New York Public Library Archives and Manuscripts page describes it as follows:
"The White Rose Mission and Industrial Association was founded in 1897 in New York City by Victoria Earle Matthews (1861-1907), former slave, journalist, author, and social worker. The Mission was a Christian, non-sectarian social center for African-American women who had migrated to the North in search of employment."
Victoria Earle Matthews (May 27, 1861 - March 10, 1907) was the daughter of a slave and its believed her father was the master of the plantation. Her mother would escape to New York City and after the Civil War would return to Georgia to claim Victoria and her younger sister. Both girls would return to NYC with their mother.
Matthews would self educate herself  and eventually became a journalist working on such NYC newspapers as the New York Times, New York Herald and the New York Sunday Mercury. She would also write for such African American newspapers as the Boston Advocate and the New York Globe.
Matthews would found such organizations as the Woman's Loyal Union (1892) and the National Federation of Afro-American Women (1895). The establishment of the White Rose Mission in 1897 sought to help black girls and young single women migrating from the south to learn skills that would help them find employment and to provide adfoddable shelter.
Matthews also wrote such novels as Aunt Lindy: A Story Founded on Real Life (1893) and helped to put together the address delivered at the first Congress of Colored Women of the United States, at Boston, Mass., July 30th, 1895 entitled The Value of Race Literature. It called for the collecting of writing both by and about African Americans. She also lectured on "The Awakening of the Afro-American Woman" and edited “Black Speeches, Addresses, and Talks of Booker T. Washington." Matthews would die of Tuberculosis on March 10, 1907.
The White Rose Mission would move to a larger location in 1897 at 217 East 86th Street and eventually moving to 262 West 136th Street in Harlem in 1918 until its closure in 1984.
