The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Lawan Shi’isu, said this in a statement in Dutse on Wednesday, adding that the suspect was arrested on Saturday in Dutse. ”On Sept. 16, at about 11a.m., Haruna Abdullahi and one other, both of Jigawa State Polytechnic Dutse, reported at Dutse police station that one Kamilu Bappa of Garko in Kano state, deceitfully introduced himself to them as a personnel of the DSS. “The duo said that the said Bappa collected the sum of N305, 000 from them with the pretence of getting them DSS and NDLEA job respectively. “So on receipt of the report, detectives attached to Dutse Division swung into action and arrested the suspect in possession of a DSS uniform trouser,” he said. Shi’isu also said that the police had also arrested a 26-year-old man for alleged armed robbery in Gwaram Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. He said the suspect, a resident of Unguwar Malam area of the LGA, was initially nabbed by a group of hunters in Dingaya village with a sheep strongly suspected to be stolen. The PPRO added that when search was conducted at the house of the suspect, one locally made pistol was recovered. ”When interrogated, the suspect alleged to have bought the pistol for 30,000 from one Usman of Nasarawa Egon LGA in Nasarawa State. “The suspect further revealed that he and Usman belong to a syndicate that specialised in armed robbery, motorcycle snatching and other atrocities in Nasarawa State,” he said. Shi’isu said that another suspect, aged 35 and resident of Danmasara village, was arrested on Monday for alleged vandalism. He said that the suspect was arrested after the police received a report that he was seen vandalising street light cables at high Hypro area of Dutse municipal. “On receipt of the report, a team of policemen rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect and on interrogation, the suspect, who happened to be a habitual criminal made a confessional statement on the offence,” he said. He also said that two other suspects, who resides in Katoge area of Kazaure LGA, were arrested on Monday too for alleged trespass and theft. He said the suspects allegedly conspired and trespassed into the residence of one Usaman Abdullahi of same area and stole property worth N3.5 million. He listed the items stolen by the suspects to include two television sets, three rugs, hand bag, two prayer mats, three bags of rice, six sets of cloth, shoe and solar panel charger, inverter battery and 25mm cable. “Upon receipt of the complaint from the victim, a team of policemen visited the scene and conducted search, which led to some of the stolen property been recovered in an uncompleted building close to the complainant’s house. Also, when search was conducted at the two suspect respective houses, a female handbag and one bag containing two praying mat were recovered,” he said. Lance often felt like he was suffocating; asphyxiating in his own blood and bones.

“You’re much too small for such big words,” his mother would often say. And she would be right — he was eight, a child still, far too young to feel like the world was a tight ball of lead sitting on his heart. Far too young to feel the weight that he felt on his shoulders.

“I feel like my lungs are too wide for my chest,” he’d tell her, and she would smile tightly at him, because although she loved him and Lance knew she did, she did not understand him.

“Maybe you should play with some of the other children your age,” she’d say, and Lance would shake his head before she finished her sentence. He tried, and tried and tried, and could not force the relationships. She knew this. She did not expect him to do as she asked, but asked anyway. Lance knew the routine.

Sometimes, though, the pressure would grow too great. His lungs would expand though his skin and his heart would pound so loudly it would burst his eardrums and his arms would stretch across the solar system and his fingers would shrink to atoms and he had get out get out get out as fast as he could on legs that has turned to stone and breath that had turned to ice and a body that no longer felt human, no longer felt Terran, felt too big and too powerful for the vessel he knew he was and was in.

On these days, Lance would escape. He would open the broken latch on the window in the room he shared with his brothers and climb carefully and quietly down the drainage pipe, like he’d seen the orphans do in Annie. He’d forgo shoes, as his mother would not be there to force them on his feet, and run down the dark and silent streets, forgetting to watch for broken glass or rusty nails and relying entirely on guardian angels he wasn’t sure existed. He’d sprint as far as he could down the broken down and pothole-ridden street that led away from the worn, paint-peeling, window-shuttered home he shared with his family, away from the sensitive ears of his mother and the ghost of his father and scolding voices of his siblings until the pressure on his chest would lessen, and then he would laugh and yell as he flew by the rest of the houses haunted by people who never came home. The guardian angels that did not exist guided him into the shadows, shielding him from the curious eyes and tattling mouths of annoyed and grouchy neighbours who would report him to his mother. Every night he fled, as far as his little feet would take him, and every night he would take grand gulps of pickup truck-diesel polluted air to store in his lungs before he returned to the house that felt like as much of a trap as it did a home.

One night, though, he heard a sound. Not the static sound of tires crunching over gravel, or the whistling of voices over the crackling of a campfire, or the crashing and bellowing of a party after dark. A different sound, as familiar as it was foreign, a deep rumbling that felt almost like an upcoming crack of thunder but did not carry the same sharp smell in the air. A sound that rumbled the black of the street under Lance’s bare toes, a sound that rattled his brain and quieted the thundering of his heart.

Lance followed the noise.

He turned on streets he often ran past, doubling back and ducking out of the wide swaths of streetlamp lights as a cop car cruised by. He followed the rumbling of the air, farther than he’d ever wandered before, until he saw it: a lineup of cars that looked like Marco’s old Hotwheels, barely illuminated by the silver glow of the moon and the yellow shine of the half-working street lamps, revving their engines and flashing their headlights.

Lance gasped. A street race. A real, live, right-in-front-of-him street race. He scrambled to the side of the road, crawling in the ditch and back out the other side to sit under the shadow of a big rock. He watched as someone came out holding a white bandana, stopping in the middle of the street between the two cars at the front of the line. Lance strained his ears to hear them over the roaring engines.

“From here to the end of the road! First there wins the pot! Ready, and…. go!” They whipped down their arm, the white bandana flapping down with it, and the cars were off before Lance could blink. He leaned as far as he could without falling over, desperately trying to soak in every detail as the cars raced towards him.

There were eight of them, all different shapes and sizes and colours, all cars made for speed. Most Lance didn’t recognise — fancy cars got ransacked fast in his neighbourhood, these people must be from out of town or else hide their prized racers real well — but there was one that caught his eye. It was blacker than night, a moving shadow, sleek and sharp. It had started last in the lineup, but was already overtaking the car in the lead. Lance watched with a gaping mouth as it came up just behind the leading car — a bright red monstrosity that looked like what you’d imagine a sports car would look like of you’d never seen one — then absolutely gunned it, shooting ahead by what felt like miles and zipping past Lance at the speed of light. The huge gust of wind that followed it almost sent Lance tumbling onto the road; luckily he held fast to the rock and stayed crouched low.

The rest of the cars followed in quick succession, so close to each other that they were almost one mass, but there was no questioning who won. Lance craned his neck, carefully watching as the black car slowed to a roll, looping around the corner on a victory lap. Some of the drivers of the losing cars stepped out of their vehicles, visibly seething as the black car cruised by. Lance could almost feel the smugness dripping from its tailpipe. The black car finally slowed to a stop back where it started, the person who’d started the race approaching the driver’s door with a fat bundle of cash. A gloved hand reached out the window and grabbed it, before ramming up the window, swerving around the person, and racing away.

Lance scrambled after it.

Ch. 9 Home? - Life is but a Dream (Spike Spiegel x Reader)

The soft creak of the second story window was the only sound in your shared bedroom. Having been sent upstairs and denied a meal for the millionth time this week, you were desperate for anything to eat. It wasn’t like the orphanage was barely surviving, but honestly you think the caretaker had something out for you. Always picking on you, calling you names, and finding any excuse to punish you. All around known as the caretaker’s personal punching bag.

“Now I can see why you were dropped off here.” She would say, before taking the plate of food from in front of you and dumping it into the trash.

With your lips sealed shut, you trudged up the stairs, sad little eyes tearing up. Any back talk would result in something far worse. The wilts on your back still stung days after your punishment, an example and demonstration of the cruelness of life.

Like a rabid animal, you were willing to receive any kind of punishment just to quiet the pain in your stomach. Grateful for the bushes located underneath your second story window, you swung your legs over the ledge, preparing to jump. With a small humph, you landed softly on your feet. Leaves and small branches pricked at your thighs as you wobbled out of the bushes. You gripped the small pouch of coins in your pocket, running your fingers over the opening of the bag.

A childish dream that a few coins were your ticket to everywhere and anywhere. The city you lived in was labeled as UN-1889, which was far into its development to retain its old name. Unofficially called “Yun” by the locals, it also held the record of absolutely nothing exciting or entertaining. Crime was moderate, chain restaurants and shopping centers were the place of excitement and that was it. Vowing to leave and never come back, you made sure to keep that promise by collecting and stashing away any money you could get your hands on. In the end, the most you had in your possession was enough to buy half a ticket, and you were ready to blow it all off in a matter of minutes on something that will only last seconds.

You spotted the bright, blue neon lights of the only local diner in the area. Parents looking to adopt will do nothing but rave about this place. Hearing just how good the food sounded compared to the gruel you were forced to eat every day, it made your mouth water and your stomach do flips. Jogging up to the entrance, you quickly opened the door to the diner. Air condition hit your dirty, sweaty face, cooling you down instantly. Much to your surprise, there was not one patron in the diner. Leaning against the counter was a middle aged woman with her hair pulled back tightly in a bun. She stared at the TV in the corner, sighing deeply. As the door closed, your presence was made known.

One look was all it took for her to know everything about you.

“Oh great, another one.” She mumbled from where she stood. “What do you want?”

“Food. I’m hungry.” You replied annoyingly.

“Have any money?” She asked, standing up straight.

You dug into your pocket, grabbed the bag of coins and held it out to the waitress. Snatching it out of your hand, she emptied the contents onto the counter. Shifting through the coins lazily, she huffed.

“Kid, this isn’t even enough for a plate.” She poured the coins back into the bag, tossing it back at you. “Door’s over there.”

Too tired and weak to fight, you slumped your way out, disappointed and embarrassed.

“Hey wait!” You heard someone shouting. You turned around, seeing another woman popping out from the kitchen. Her soft, platinum blond curls bounced as she walked out to stop you from leaving. Ringlets of silver hung from her ears and wrists, clanking softly as she motioned you to come closer. “Are you from the orphanage down the street?”

You nodded vigorously.

“I know how she treats those babies over there. You come on over and get yourself something to eat.” She said, tapping on the counter.

“I don’t have enough for-“ you started. She waved her hand, her signal for no ands, if, or buts. As you pranced over, you heard the waitress groan.

“Lou, you can’t be serious.” She muttered.

Lou held her hand up. “I don’t like seeing children go hungry. It’s not right.”

“Pick whatever you like.” She smiled, handing over a menu to you. Everything looked so delicious and tempting. You only see people like this on TV. It seems so fake, portraying kindness in a sickening, sweet way. It was enough to hurt your teeth.

You watched in adoration as Lou passed you a basket of warm rolls, butter shimmering off the golden buns. Forget manners. You gobbled down the bread in minutes, hiccuping softly. You weren’t focused on trying to quiet your hiccups down, just to fill your empty stomach.

“My goodness, slow down.” Lou chuckled, placing a cup of water next to you. “What’s your name, baby?”

“It’s (Y/N).” You replied, mouth still full of bread.

“(Y/N). Now is that your actual name or was it given to you by that devil woman?”

“It’s my actual name. They tried to change it, but decided to keep it.” You said, wiping your mouth with the back of your hand.

Lou handed you a few napkins. “I swear that lady does not like anything or anyone. An all around horrible person.”

You nodded sadly, trying to dissipate the knowledge that you were probably going to receive the harshest punishment you have ever had in your short life when you came back “home”. As your stomach was dropping at the thought of your imminent demise, Lou slid your plate of food in front of you. Eating a basket of rolls wasn’t enough at all. This food looked better than anything you consumed at the orphanage.

While Lou and the waitress babbled and bickered, the static and switch of the TV in the corner was the only noise in the room. Eventually the waitress decided to settle on the local news. Expansion of some parts of the city, a deadly crash near the asteroid belt, and so on and so on. Suddenly, the screen flashed with the words BREAKING NEWS splayed on the screen.

The news reporter quickly tapped through her data pad, smiled and addressed the viewers.

“Good evening, we bring to you some breaking news. The criminal Kedo, who was wanted on both planets Earth and Ganymede for the murders of multiple people, has been caught right here in UN-1889.”

The reporter then drone on about his crimes, and how he left his trail. You chewed slowly, hanging onto every word. Crime was at a middle to low level, but you have never seen something as large as this.

“It has been reported by BIG SHOT, a new TV program broadcasted specially for bounty hunters in the solar system, that Kedo’s bounty had jumped from 500,000 woolong to over a million woolong.” Your eyes widened. To a small child, one million woolong was a whole lot more than what it actually was. You were probably never going to see that sort of money in your lifetime. All the possibilities of having that much money ran through your head. The first was getting the hell out of this city.

“We are informed that the courageous bounty hunter, or huntress, known as Lady Jo, caught Kedo red-handed in hiding right here in UN-1889.” The reporter stated.

The screen switched to live coverage at the police station, cameras flashing and reporters clamoring to get a closer look at the infamous criminal who was now being led into the building in handcuffs. His hair disheveled, eyes scanning his surroundings like crazy, fitting a perfect description of a crazed murderer. The cameras shifted their attention to Jo, standing proudly with her hand resting on her holster.

Intrigue and fascination filled you. You couldn’t help but watch in awe of her. Her auburn hair was curly and volumized, laying softly on her shoulders, eyes a striking green that shone like emeralds in the harsh lights of the TV crews. The waitress scoffed at her outfit, which consisted of a revealing button up white shirt, tucked into black leather pants, with a matching jacket. She was truly a sight to see.

“Can you believe that? She’s not a cowgirl, she’s a goddamn model.” She said.

Lou snorted. “You know, I used to have an outfit just like that.”

You smiled back, finishing your plate. Not wanting to take your eyes off the TV, the silverware clattered loudly onto the plate.

“I’ll tell you what, there is absolutely no honor in being a bounty hunter. They’re rude, selfish, and I hate every last one of them. Especially Lady what’s-her-name right here.” The waitress nagged, taking your empty plate.

“They can do a way better job than actual law enforcement.” Lou retorted.

You didn’t pay attention to their conversation. If there wasn’t any honor I’m your choice, so be it. Your new bottom line was set into place. One million woolong was going to be a possibility for you, one way or another.

Jet sat at the navigation console on the bridge, pressing buttons at a lightning fast speed. On his right side was the computer TV, playing some late night television as background noise. Faye stood near the windows, smoking a cigarette and looking out into the nighttime sky. There was something that must have been discussed.

As she opened her mouth to speak, Jet sighed and got up. “I went ahead and placed our coordinates for our next bounty back on Mars. Should only be a week.”

“Dinner was a little off, don’t you think?” Faye said, ignoring Jet.

Jet’s eyes narrowed. “Are you saying something about my cooking?”

“What? No. I meant with-“

“With Spike and (Y/N)? Then yes, there is something off with them. I’ve noticed it since we got back home the other day.” Jet said.

“So much more talkative, that’s for damn sure. Couldn’t keep up with it.” Faye replied as she descended the steps to the navigation console.

“The big baby wasn’t all too happy about her staying with us. So I wonder why he’s acting all buddy buddy with her.”

Faye chuckled, a sly upturn of the mouth growing on her face. “Hmm, sounds like someone is jealous.”

Looking up from the console, Jet scoffed. “I’m more than happy that I’m not playing therapist anymore. Everyday it was, “did you see the way she did this” or “did you see the way how she did that”. At that point, I should’ve started charging Spike.”

Faye had given some deep thought since dinner. The outline was in plain sight. A touch on the back. A squeeze on the shoulder. A tap on the thigh. It thrilled Faye to be the only one to know of the growing tension between Spike and (Y/N), to be the one to hold a secret without being told of it. But in the midst of the excitement, there was another feeling circling, weaving it way into her head. Jealousy.

It hurts to see couples walking by, hand in hand, romantically flaunting each other openly. Bothering Faye for a second, she knew she didn’t have to go home with them. But now that it was only a few feet from her, it was going to be a problem.

If the game doesn’t go as planned, someone has to interfere to ensure a win. And Faye did not like losing.

The computer TV turned to static as Jet flipped through the channels, trying to find the right program to end the night on. Settling on tonight’s showing of Big Shot, he leaned against the console, pondering about dinner. A conversation consisting of 100 words and more between Spike and (Y/N) was non-existent for the time that she had been staying on the Bebop. One afternoon alone, and suddenly they’re two peas in a pod.

We’ll just see how it goes, Jet thought.

A big red WARNING sign displayed on the screen, waking Jet and Faye right up.

“Folks, it seems we have an important message to relay to all bounty hunters in the solar system from the ISSP.”Punch said, his playful, exaggerated facade never faltering.

“Go ahead, we are all dying to know!” Judy replied, apparently cheerful about a serious topic at hand.

“Bounty hunters, look out! A mysterious criminal is on the loose, and his target is not the innocent civilians of the solar systems, but our esteemed, hard working hunters.”

“What makes him so bad, anyway?” Judy questioned.

“Mysterious you say? Well goodness, looks like there’s no bounty for them yet!”

“Right you are. Until we get a face and a name, no dinero can be placed for the bounty. So be aware, and be safe out there, buckeroos!” Punch finished, smiling alongside Judy. Knowing they were playing a character, it was off putting by the serious news given.

Jet and Faye looked at each other in silence, eyes wide and full of questions.

DICK DOESN’T REALLY KNOW WHAT TO FEEL. Surprised, maybe? Though he really isn’t all that shocked. Not that the revelation of another Wayne kid isn’t surprising, it’s just that—well…

Bruce has a tendency to attract foolhardy kids with a strong sense of justice and a willingness to harp on Batman until he gives them wings and teaches them how to fly. It’s the way of the world. The sky is blue, the sun sets in the west, and little Robin-hopefuls flock to Batman like ducklings to their big, brooding, mother duck. (That most of them are black haired and blue-eyed with some sort of traumatic backstory is a coincidence. Probably. The universe is just weird that way.)

And Bruce, bleeding heart that he is despite all the steel walls and nuclear spike fields he placed around it, always had a soft spot for children. It’s what people don’t get when they call Robins and Batgirls, former or current, child soldiers. They think that Batman picks these children up from gutter alleys and unfortunate homes, breaking and reshaping them into crusaders for his war against crime.

(What most don’t get is that the easiest way to gain ‘favorite child’ status in the Wayne household is to just stay home and live the most normal life possible. All of them—with the exception of Damian and Cass—chose this life. And even those two chose to stick with it, even when Bruce was more than happy to give them a way out.)

Dick was one of the first to stand at Batman’s side. The original. The ‘golden boy’ as Jason always put it. He’d been there so early in Batman’s career that, years later, it’s nearly inconceivable to imagine Batman without his Robin. He’s been there for Bruce’s soaring highs, his crushing lows, his mundane middles, just as Bruce has been there for him. Sure, they’ve had their fights, but Dick had always settled himself with the knowledge that he was one of the few people that knew everything about Bruce Wayne.

But this . This nursery—no, this memorial . This monument that spoke of a life that could have, should have, would have been, is something that predates Robin’s existence. A story, a memory that had hurt Bruce so badly that he would rather hide it away than breathe even a word of its existence.

Until now. Until Bruce had no choice but to rip the wound open once more.

“Bruce. I—what’s going on?”

“Perhaps,” Alfred interjected. “Perhaps it may be best to take this to the cave. Such a story should be told once.”

Bruce laughed, a broken, shuddering thing. “What is there to tell? I was naive with a heart too open and full of longing. I let myself hope, and I let myself get crushed . I picked myself up, moved on, end of story.”

Alfred raised an imperious brow. “As you are the one who always insisted on detailed reports, I do hope your summary to the boys downstairs would have a little more detail.” His face softened as he placed a comforting hand on Bruce’s shoulder. “What recent information that has been passed to us paints a worrisome picture, given what little you have shared, but know that this time you are not alone to deal with this matter. Regardless of what you do, the rest of the family is involved by proxy."

Bruce seemed to release some of the tension in his shoulders at that. “Yes. Of course. Dick, why don’t you see if Tim is back yet. I don’t want to explain this more than once, if possible. I’ll be down in a few minutes.”

“Yeah. Yeah, sure, I’ll get right on that.”

“And, Dick?”

“Yeah?”

Bruce’s gaze was intense. “How is Damian doing?”

He remembered the way Damian sunk deeper into the chair, hands clasping and unclasping at air. The white of his cast hanging limply as Damian’s legs could just barely brush against the cave floor. Dick swallowed a lump in his throat. “I don’t know. But I do know that he could really use his father right about now.”

Bruce gave a shaky nod and Dick left.

Everyone has heard this tale before.

His boys have learned about the birth of Batman, of how a boy lost his parents in an alley at the age of eight. How at 14 he took to the study of criminology to an almost religious fervor. He took and aced every AP test, graduated high school at 16, headed off to get a college degree, then disappeared off the face of the earth.

Batman may have been born kneeling in the shadows of a dirty alley, but it was on the streets abroad where Batman grew up. Learning and studying and fighting until he knew what made the criminal underworld tick, how to escape almost every type of restraints, how to solve a murder with only the smallest of clues. He trained under a demon and met his daughter. When their ideas of justice clashed with each other, he tried to leave, they tried to stop him, and he set their base on ablaze.

He returned to Gotham the prodigal son, the favored prince, the charming socialite. Bruce Wayne took his place at the center of Gotham’s solar system, shining and bright and unbelievably foolish. Batman put on a cowl and learned the shadows of Gotham’s streets, and built himself up to be a symbol of fear and justice. Soon, he acquired a Robin to temper that darkness. To bring a light of hope, to instill a sense of peace— something more than vengeance and the night.

The rest is history.

Here is the part of the story that Bruce had omitted:

Early in his career as Batman, a man named Quayin had plans to steal a weather modifying US satellite. This, and certain other events, led to Bruce and Ra’s al Ghul crossing paths—and working on the same side. The details of that mission, in the long run. do not matter. Not anymore. What’s important is that accompanying him is his daughter, Talia al Ghul. She was as deadly as she was beautiful—and Talia was very, very beautiful.

It was a whirlwind romance. A storm of passion. Gotham’s Bruce Wayne and socialite Miranda Tate. * Batman and the Daughter of the Demon. The tempest reached its peak on that fateful day in the gardens of Wayne Manor. The hot summer sun and buzzing insects fading away as she pulled him aside and said “Beloved, I am with child. I am pregnant.” **

Bruce was caught unawares by the news. Stared dumbfounded at her until his brain caught up with his ears and he felt such unbridled joy bubbling in his chest. He laughed, clear and bright. He held her tight against him as if she held the world in her hands—because she did . Talia held his world within her and Bruce vowed to protect it with every fiber of his being. He called Alfred immediately to tell him the news and started arranging for discreet interior decorators and shipments for everything they needed for a nursery.

Thomas, for a boy. Martha for a girl. He swore that very day that it would be the happiest baby in the world. **

And then—

And then…

As Ra’s and Bruce planned their next move to stop Quayin from initiating a war between America and the USSR, Talia collapsed.

Talia collapsed and the baby was just…

Gone.

And suddenly Talia wanted nothing to do with him. Told Bruce to leave her alone, that their relationship would never be the same.

His child was gone .

By the time the rogue satellite was recovered, Quayin defeated, and all loose ends tied up, the nursery was fully furnished. Bruce took one look at it and then turned away. Locked the door and hid the key god-knows-where.

His child was gone.

Batman continued to work.

There was no use for an empty nursery.

The story I'm using for the circumstances surrounding Danny's birth is basically a modified version of what happens in Batman: Son of the Demon. Modified so that people knew that Bruce Wayne and Miranda Tate were a couple and to give enough time for a nursery to be built along with the rest of the events of that comic.

Original Fiction: Time Borrowed Prompt #03: I've Waited for This Word Count: 1616 Words Warnings: Language, Violence, Blood, Car Accident

“Traveling east on Pratt –Beau, Garnet, he’s headed your way.”

“Copy that.” Garnet hit the sirens, peeling out from the parking lot and onto Pratt Street. Beau connected with one of Ayla’s drones, anticipating where exactly the small car was coming from.

“There,” Beau pointed, diverting his HUD to the windshield. A silver vehicle emerged from oncoming traffic, outlined in blinking orange lines.

“He’s not slowing down. If he gets past we might lose him,” Garnet warned, already reaching for the emergency brake.

“Let's do whatever we have to.” Beau positioned his footing in the floorboard to better wedge himself, anticipating their trajectory as the suspect spotted them, swerving in the intersection trying to slip past.

“Hold on, Turtle,” Garnet grunted, twisting the e-break. The patrol car drummed as its wheels locked up, swinging into a broadside slide. Tires screamed. Beau held onto the seat, twisting in hopes of blocking any imploding glass from Garnet.

The anticipated crash was somehow louder than expected, a cry of twisting metal and cracking fiberglass. They jerked on impact, Beau’s safety belt snapping tight and digging into his shoulder. His audio crackled in and out before reconnecting.

“—car 777 is hit. 164, 212, do you copy?”

“We copy,” Garnet grunted, Beau scanning him for severe injuries before himself. Besides being coated with powder from the airbags, Garnet was okay. “You good, B.O.?”

“Copy.” He expelled dust from his sensors.

“777, suspect is continuing on foot. Northbound towards the river,” Ayla reported. Beau shoved on his door finding it jammed and blocked by the smoking vehicle.

“Oh, I’ve waited for this!” Garnet cackled, kicking his protesting door open. “Stay here.”

“Garnet! The suspect is armed.” Beau warned, frantic to remove his safety belt. Stuck. Garnet took off as if he didn’t hear –or care. Typical. All Beau could think of was the way the call had been announced by dispatch. That this suspect was armed, clearly dangerous and desperate.

Beau yanked on the seat belt again, finally gripping the buckle socket and yanked. The bolt in the floor gave, freeing him. Working one foot from the dented mess of the car’s damaged floorboard, he clawed his way out the driver’s door. Squinting in the sun he stumbled out, connecting with the nearest drone to know which way to start.

“Traveling down Fourth,” Ayla’s updates crackled in and out, Beau breaking into a sprint in the direction. Garnet was already out of sight, cars a block ahead laying on the horn, no doubt warning him of his recklessness. Beau threw himself into the run, darting around people on the sidewalk, turning onto the next street, leaping over a stroller.

"Excuse me," he called back to the shouting mother. He cut across traffic and over the knoll into a library park. Swinging around a light post he vaulted over one of the many outdoor tables where a group shared a lunch. “Sorry –pardon me.” He crossed the blacktop, throwing himself feet first over a wall onto the steps that led to a pedestrian ecoduct, crossing the main highway. Tires screeched below, Beau glancing down finding Garnet skating across the hood of a car, landing on his feet. Safe.

“He’s turned down Broad, continuing east.”

Beau sharply wheeled to the edge of the bridge, leaping the rail for the street corner below. Gravel of a solar garden cushioned his landing, rolling to his feet without slowing down.

“Suspect has entered the Horizon Hotel off Broad. I’ve lost visual.” Ayla warned. Beau slid around a corner, taking an alley to arrive on the backside of the building. Leaping the garden wall, he landed in a courtyard fountain, scanning windows catching a silhouette matching Garnet's build taking the stairs.

Beau scrabbled up to the first balcony, throwing his weight to the second. He climbed to the roof, one balcony after the other. The access door was locked by code, hacking and unlocking it by the time he reached the knob. It hissed open and Beau charged down the flight of stairs, gun drawn.

He heard scrambling from floors below, orders from Garnet before the wail of the fire alarm started.

Beau rushed his way down, hearing the clatter and bang of a storm door shut. Exiting on the next level he peered out the window, watching the suspect leap from the fourth floor, roll off the bed of a truck, and keep running.

Garnet soon followed.

Beau took the nearest window, catching the ledge before dropping, grabbing the rail of the second story breezeway, unsure what he may land on below. Once it was clear, he dropped. A gunshot echoed between buildings, Beau looking up to find Garnet staggering at the sidewalk of the roundabout, diving onto a shoulder.

“Fuck!” Garnet gathered himself up, gripping his arm that bled above the elbow.

Beau fought his way out of his jacket, trying to cool down. Garnet, however, wasn’t stopping. He took off down the sidewalk again.

OVERCLOCKING

Beau forced himself into a run, refusing to stop considering the suspect was desperate and dangerous. And Garnet? Ever reckless. But he had every right to be. This was the only lead they had in finding Ryker. The longer they took, the more likely he was dead. If they lost this suspect, they could lose Ryker.

Beau took off down the street, merging into traffic in lieu of dodging pedestrians. Between cars he continued to chase, spotting Garnet at the next intersection. A car nearly swerved on top of Beau, having to roll over their trunk and nearly staggering into the back of a recycling truck.

“Shots fired,” Ayla reported. “All units to Winter and Common. I repeat. Shots fired. All units to Winter and Common.”

Beau rounded the truck finding Garnet hunched in the middle of the intersection, suspect standing with their weapon raised. People scattered from harm's way, traffic stopped. But Beau was fixed on Garnet.

He kneeled in the street, gripping his bloody arm.

He wasn’t getting up.

Beau pulled his weapon free, aiming for the suspect, HUD locked on the center of their forehead.

But the heat wasn’t of exertion or season. It was a heat driving through his processes, a dizzying pitch working from his TLN. Uncontrollable and lashing.

He squeezed the trigger.

The shot entered the suspect’s shoulder, twisting them to the ground and dropping their weapon. Beau wanted to fire again, no longer trusting himself and knowing protocol may not make a last moment adjustment to keep him from firing into their head. He dropped his gun, rushing to check on Garnet.

He hissed in warning when Beau pressed on his shoulders, sitting him up to scan him over. He’d been shot once in the arm, another in the thigh. Grabbing Beau’s arm, he continued trying to stand.

“Be still,” Beau ordered. |212 to Dispatch. Requesting two ambulances to Winter and Commons. Gunshot wounds.|

The wail of a siren cut him off, turning just in time to spot the Mediator car wheeling around the corner. Their breaks shrieked. Beau grabbed the front of Garnet’s jacket, twisting him around to brace against the incoming car. Its front end crumpled, partially wrapping around Beau’s shoulder and guarding arm. Bowing forwards from impact, he was able to stop it from crushing them.

Garnet drug himself backward, eyes wide, continuing to glance to the car as if it would suddenly drive forwards and over the both of them. Beau glared at him, the burning sensation in his TLN network still alight.

“I wish for once you would stop being so damn stubborn and reckless!” He barked, words rupturing from him regardless of the warning in his HUD that Garnet may be in shock. “I told you not to go alone! That it was dangerous! I know you don’t care for me but for once will you listen to me?! I can back myself up. I can come back. But you’re Human –if something happens to you, you don’t come back! I can’t lose you and Ryker!!”

Garnet gaped, eyes darting across Beau’s face.

“Do you understand?! I’m fucking terrified! This unit is all I have, and if I lose you, I won’t have anything. You have to be careful. You have to listen!”

“O-okay, Beau. Okay, I’m sorry. Just relax, bud. It’s okay, alright? I’m okay.” Garnet sat up, nodding as if it would be compelling against his bleeding wounds. His harsh manners faded, careful in touching Beau’s shoulder that wasn’t currently in the grill of a car. The officer driving it staggered out, coughing on airbag dust. “Why don’t you look where the fuck you’re goin’?!” Garnet snapped at the man, pointing. “Arrest that motherfucker. There’s an ambulance coming for him.”

“Yes, sir.”

Garnet’s face softened again, looking back to Beau. “You alright? Anything hurt?”

“Not badly.” Beau watched his temperature descend in his HUD, scanning Garnet again to confirm what he's said was true –that he was alright. More sirens wailed as other cars and an ambulance arrived.

“That was some real Terminator shit,” Garnet snickered, mussing Beau’s hair. “Can you get out?”

“Oh,” Beau moved, trying to pull himself forward and out of the car. His shoulder was caught, wrapped in fiberglass. “No… I’m stuck.”

Garnet turned to the closest vehicle. “Hey! Can I get some spreader-cutters over there for my friend? Yeah, you. You got some?”

“Sir, do you need an EMT?”

“No, get that guy first. We need some spreader-cutters. Look’at him.”

Theodor Boeyermans - The Emperor Constantine's vision of the Cross before the battle of the Milvian Bridge -

The Battle of the Milvian Bridge took place between the Roman Emperors Constantine I and Maxentius on 28 October 312. It takes its name from the Milvian Bridge, an important route over the Tiber. Constantine won the battle and started on the path that led him to end the Tetrarchy and become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. Maxentius drowned in the Tiber during the battle; his body was later taken from the river and decapitated, and his head was paraded through the streets of Rome on the day following the battle before being taken to Africa. 

According to chroniclers such as Eusebius of Caesarea and Lactantius, the battle marked the beginning of Constantine's conversion to Christianity. Eusebius of Caesarea recounts that Constantine and his soldiers had a vision sent by the Christian God. This was interpreted as a promise of victory if the sign of the Chi-Rho, the first two letters of Christ's name in Greek, was painted on the soldiers' shields. The Arch of Constantine, erected in celebration of the victory, certainly attributes Constantine's success to divine intervention; however, the monument does not display any overtly Christian symbolism.

It is commonly understood that on the evening of 27 October with the armies preparing for battle, Constantine had a vision which led him to fight under the protection of the Christian God. Some details of that vision, however, differ between the sources reporting it.

Lactantius states that, in the night before the battle, Constantine was commanded in a dream to "delineate the heavenly sign on the shields of his soldiers" (On the Deaths of the Persecutors 44.5). He followed the commands of his dream and marked the shields with a sign "denoting Christ". Lactantius describes that sign as a "staurogram", or a Latin cross with its upper end rounded in a P-like fashion. There is no certain evidence that Constantine ever used that sign, opposed to the better known Chi-Rho sign described by Eusebius.

A coin struck in 313, depicting Constantine as the companion of a solar deity From Eusebius, two accounts of the battle survive. The first, shorter one in the Ecclesiastical History promotes the belief that the Christian God helped Constantine but does not mention any vision. In his later Life of Constantine, Eusebius gives a detailed account of a vision and stresses that he had heard the story from the Emperor himself. According to this version, Constantine with his army was marching (Eusebius does not specify the actual location of the event, but it clearly is not in the camp at Rome), when he looked up to the sun and saw a cross of light above it, and with it the Greek words "Εν Τούτῳ Νίκα", En toutō níka, usually translated into Latin as "in hoc signo vinces". The literal meaning of the phrase in Greek is "in this (sign), conquer" while in Latin it's "in this sign, you shall conquer"; a more free translation would be "Through this sign [you shall] conquer". At first he was unsure of the meaning of the apparition, but in the following night he had a dream in which Christ explained to him that he should use the sign against his enemies. Eusebius then continues to describe the labarum, the military standard used by Constantine in his later wars against Licinius, showing the Chi-Rho sign.
