Hi hi, Lili! Yes, of course. Tbh I shouldn't have called them "pirates" they are known as such and treated like villains, but they're more like unofficial naval guard! The official naval guard was disbanded in the 90's due to the civil war that broke out [btw this civil war is why I'm diaspora! My maternal family fled to Djibouti or elsewhere. My dad came to Canada due to it.] Anyway! Other nations took advantage of this as they tended to do and started fishing illegally in the waters! Somali citizens rely on fishing to live [also farming and agriculture bc I also recall there was a drought and famine going on] so they turned to "piracy" to stop these thieves from stealing from them! Of course, these outsiders didn't like it and called it "piracy." they shouldn't be there in the first place!!!

DeSantis is calling for a US representative to be denaturalized and deported.

The apparent cause? Said representative, Ilhan Omar, is a naturalized Somali-American citizen who recently gave a speech where she referred to herself as "Somali first, and Muslim second," without mentioning America.

“Expel from Congress, denaturalize and deport,” urged Ron DeSantis about U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, who is taking criticism from the Right for comments she made privileging Somalia over the United States.

As Newsweek notes, Omar recently told a crowd of Somali American constituents that she was “Somalian first, Muslim second” and “here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system.”

She also claimed that while she is in Congress, “no one will take Somalia’s sea. The United States will not back others to rob us.” There, she was objecting to a deal struck by Somaliland to give Ethiopia access to the ocean.

I'm not going to comment on the discussion of who deserves to own the disputed territories she's actually talking about in her speech, because quite frankly I barely know enough about that area to understand why Italy caused the Ethiopia/Eritrea/Djibouti port access issue, but I will say that it is a frankly ridiculous cause for STRIPPING SOMEONE OF THEIR CITIZENSHIP AND DEPORTING THEM. The woman was talking about her ethnic and cultural background and promising to protect people of that specific background. This is a normal thing for politicians to do. It's often their platform.

And let's not pretend that "I will strengthen ties with/support this ally" is uncommon. It's just usually the EU or Israel or something, instead of Somalia.

... possibly the actual cause, politically, is that she has been supporting Rep. Tlaib in pro-Palestine activities, and has been calling for reparations to be paid to the families of civilians killed by US operations in Somalia.

While I definitely have my issues with David Cameron and his appointment as Foreign Secretary, I'm pleased he's talking seriously about recognising the State of Palestine, which is surely the absolute minimum step for any kind of two-state solution and peaceful resolution to all this.

There's even some talk about recognising the Republic of Somaliland, which would be a big deal (I'm reading conflicting reports on whether Ethiopia has recognised it or not). I still don't understand how a largely peaceful and democratic state remains unrecognised in favour of a claim by Somalia, a chaotic state in virtual anarchy.

Setting Blurb: MacroCommunity Greater Somalia

The Somali Civil War reignited with the outbreak of the Third World War, with the breakaway East African Federation-backed Mogadishu government reasserting their claims over the breakaway Somaliland. The conflict spilled over into the Somali-speaking Ogaden in Ethiopia and Djibouti, and financial and military aid from the African Union and Arab League diminished as WWIII took its toll globally. The collapse of the United States and China caused a global wave of economic, political, and then societal collapse. The East African Federation withdrew from Somalia to maintain some semblance of stability on the home front, and the Mogadishu and Hargesia governments broke.

The generation of conflict that followed, known as the "Warlords' Wars", would see the emergence of protostates filling the vacuum created by the anti-climactic end of WWIII. Somalia's clans were quick to reassert themselves, and spent the Warlords period fighting for influence and territory. As the wars died down globally, a successor state to the Ethiopian government emerged to challenge the Somali clans of the Ogaden for control of the territory.

It was during this time that a growing alliance of warlords in the former United States, European Union, and China began approaching the remnants of ECOWAS and the East African Community to serve as springboards into incorporating the rest of the African continent. Fearing the new Ogaden War's potential spillover into eastern and central Africa resulted in a series of talks and border skirmishes that made Ethiopia and Somalia EAC protectorates (which was itself annexed into the Imperial League). Somalia retained the Ogaden (and Somali-majority areas in Kenya), and Ethiopia was placated with the annexation of Eritrea and non-Somali Djibouti.

The Eight Gobols: These eight provinces are the territory held by the extant clans and sub-clans that survived the Warlords' Wars period. The clans' territorial holdings were formally recognized by the early League government, and their leadership awarded collective governorship over the new MacroCommunity. Each Gobol is governed by a Xeer court, which oversees vocational councils (professions within the clan are held by one or more sub-clans) and maintains the clan militia.

Gosha Kaunti: The de facto capitol region of Greater Somalia, Gosha Kaunti is named for Somalia's Bantu-speaking minority. The Gosha have risen in prominence due to serving mediators for the clans around them (as their ancestors were not formally incorporated into the Somali clan system) should the Xeer courts be found unsatisfactory. The MacroCommunal governor's personal guards and a small detachment of Support Service Force security troopers help ensure that the clans find Gosha mediation to be more than satisfactory.

Land Force Demesne Djibouti: Carved out of the Somali speaking partition of Djibouti, this Land Force Demesne houses the East African third of Field Army Yellow's naval assets. Piracy still plagues the horn of Africa, with many in the Imperial Armed Forces believing that the pirates are receiving aid from the League's rivals.

Turkey works to pacify Ethiopia and Somalia

Turkey is seeking to bring Horn of Africa rivals Somalia and Ethiopia together for a second round of talks in Ankara to ease tensions between them, Turkish media reported.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met separately with his counterparts from Somalia and Ethiopia on Monday. A Turkish diplomatic source said:

“The two sides are not meeting each other. The Turkish delegation is conducting shuttle diplomacy under the coordination of our minister.”

The two neighbours have long had a territorial feud. They fought two wars in the late 20th century. These tensions escalated significantly earlier this year when Addis Ababa signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland that gives Ethiopia, one of the world’s largest landlocked countries, long-awaited access to the sea.

Somaliland, which unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991, which was not recognised by Mogadishu, said in return that Ethiopia would give it official recognition, although these claims were not confirmed by Addis Ababa.

Under the treaty signed on January 1, Somaliland agreed to give 20 kilometres (12 miles) of its coastline on a 50-year lease to Ethiopia, which wants to establish a naval base and commercial port there.

Fidan said there had been “good progress” in the July talks and expressed hope for the future, speaking at a news conference alongside the foreign ministers of the two neighbouring countries.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is also involved in diplomatic efforts to reconcile the two sides, holding separate telephone talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed over the weekend.

Turkey is seeking diplomatic and economic influence in Africa at a time when many countries on the continent are turning their backs on their former colonial rulers. During Erdogan’s two decades in power, Ankara has consolidated its position on the continent, quadrupling the number of its embassies.

Turkey has already announced plans to begin oil and gas exploration off the coast of Somalia, similar to what it is doing in Libyan waters. Ankara has signed defence agreements with a number of states spanning the continent, including Somalia, Libya, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Ghana.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said that his country "does not wish any harm" on neighbouring Somalia.

His comments in parliament came after Somalia accused landlocked Ethiopia of trying to annex part of its territory to gain access to the sea.

Last month, Ethiopia struck a controversial deal with the breakaway republic of Somaliland.

Somaliland, which Somalia sees as part of its territory, agreed to lease a stretch of coastline to Ethiopia.

Somalia described the agreement as an act of aggression and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called on youths "to prepare for the defence of our country".

He also said that he would only talk to Ethiopia if the deal was withdrawn.

Protests against the deal have also been held in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, with tens of thousands of people turning up to express their opposition.

Meanwhile, diplomats have tried to calm tensions and said that Somalia's sovereignty over all its territory needs to be recognised.

In an apparent move to dampen concerns, Mr Abiy painted a picture to MPs on Monday of brotherhood among the neighbours, despite a devastating war between the two countries in the 1970s.

"The people of Ethiopia and Somalia are bound by blood. Many Ethiopians have died for the peace of Somalia," he said, seemingly referring to the Ethiopian forces that have backed Somalia's government in its fight with armed Islamist group al-Shabab.

"Therefore, the friendship between the two countries is profound," Mr Abiy added.

He went on to blame "some forces [for] trying to incite conflict between the two nations". But he also continued to talk about access to the sea arguing that it would benefit the whole region.

Mr Abiy had previously described sea access as an "existential issue" for his country.

On 1 January, he signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi.

An MoU is a statement of intent rather than a legally binding agreement.

As part of the deal, Somaliland said it was ready to grant Ethiopia access to the sea for commercial traffic through a port. It also said it could lease a section of the coast to Ethiopia's navy.

In return, Somaliland said that Ethiopia would recognise its independence, but this has not been confirmed by Addis Ababa.

Somaliland, a former British protectorate, declared itself independent from Somalia in 1991 and has all the trappings of a country, including a working political system, regular elections, a police force and its own currency.

But its independence has not been recognised by any country.
