Coconut & Co. is a Southeast Asian coconut-focused drinks & dessert café. They make things from scratch using organic young coconut water, coconut sugar, coconut meat, etc. Their recipes come from Singapore, where coconut shakes are popular.
Score: 40/50
Food: 5/5 – Choose from several types of Kaya toast (toast, cold butter, kaya (coconut) jam), pandan chiffon cake, purple sticky rice and Qing Bu Liang (build your own sweet cold dessert soup). The kaya toast with butter was simple but good (white bread, slab of salted butter, sweet coconut jam).
Coffee: 5/5 – They do have coffee but I haven’t tried it. The Malaysian tea is like milk tea. They’re known for their coconut shakes and coconut water drinks. The coconut shakes are very good – icy, refreshing, clean tasting, not too sweet. You can add toppings like boba noodles, young coconut meat, coconut flakes, sago, grass jelly, aiyu, etc.
Wi-fi: 4/5 – Free, unlimited, no password required. It worked well while I was there.
Ambiance: 3/5 – Feels like a boba shop with cute images of cartoon coconut characters on the walls, white and green color scheme, some plants
Noise: 2/5 – The pop music is super loud.
Plugs: 2/5 – Just accessible in one area
Parking: 4/5 – Plenty of strip mall parking in the parking lot, 4 hour limit
Comfort: 4/5 – Most of the chairs are padded but there are some stools that aren’t padded. Lots of lights. Tables are pretty close together.

Art: 4/5 – Cutesy coconut characters
Tips: Place your order on the self-serve kiosk. They’re happy to provide samples. You can adjust the sweetness level of the shakes and specialty drinks. Service always seems extra friendly.

B Hotel Quezon City Offers Stylish Staycation With Fantastic Dining Options

Last weekend, we went on a fun, relaxing, and food-filled staycation at B Hotel Quezon City together with a few of our friends. I had stayed at this hotel before back in 2015 when it was newly opened (B Hotel Quezon City: Industrial Chic Accommodations in the Heart of the City), so I was really happy to be invited back and reacquaint myself with this charming neighborhood hotel in Quezon City.

B Hotel Quezon City is a boutique hotel located along Scout Rallos Street, just a few steps away from the bustling Timog and Tomas Morato commercial areas. It is owned and operated by Bellevue Hotels & Resorts which is well known for its luxurious five-star hotel in the south, the Bellevue Manila, as well as the Bellevue Resort in Bohol and the B Hotel in Alabang.

Checking in was a breeze as the hotel also offers complimentary parking slots at the basement. B Hotel Quezon City’s central location plus affordable rates makes it an ideal destination for businessmen who are staying in the city for a few days, or even for balikbayan friends or visiting relatives who need a convenient and comfortable hotel that is just nearby.

We stayed at the Superior King Room which comes with 28 square meters of relaxing space. The room features wooden floors and interiors with a separate work area and lounge chair.

Aside from the king sized bed and cushioned headboards, it also comes with an LCD cable television, a small fridge and mini bar, a work desk with USB ports, and complimentary wired and wireless internet access.

The comfort room comes with a rain shower and is complete with toiletries and amenities for a comfortable stay. We went to the hotel quite early because we were excited for our staycation, so it was time to have lunch at the lobby!

The Lobby Cafe is the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant that serves breakfast buffet plus an international a la carte menu for lunch and dinner. B Hotel Quezon City is very proud of its dining options at the lobby and at their popular steakhouse downstairs, so we were happy to be given a sample of their creative and enticing menu selection prepared and curated by Executive Chef Vincent Odejar.

Our lunch at the Lobby Cafe started with the Kani Crisp and Roasted Mushroom Salad (P380). This very pretty salad comes with a combination of crab sticks, mixed greens, garlic, mushrooms, and honey miso dressing.

We were quite delighted with all the other items presented like the Cured Salmon and Potato Salad (P420) with its homemade salmon gravlax, baby potatoes, bacon bits, chives, and Parmesan cheese. The Truffle Carbonara Pizza (P720) is a great lunch or snack option that can be shared with friends. Asian and Local Favorites on the menu include the Pad Thai (P480), a Thai favorite made with rice noodles, shrimp, chicken and tofu. There's also the Laksa which is a spicy Southeast Asian noodle soup using coconut broth.

For our main course, I really liked the Seared Mediterranean Sea Bass (P960) with cauliflower-tarragon cream, miso, and edamame purée. The very tender sea bass was cooked perfectly.

Meatlovers should go for the US Boneless Short Ribs (P1,000) with garlic confit, red wine-shallot reduction, pumpkin purée, herb butter, and black peppercorn sauce. The presentation itself looks like a work of art which adds to the overall dining experience. You don’t have to go all the way to Ortigas or Bonifacio Global City to enjoy a five-star experience such as this.

The same can be said about their desserts because they all look too beautiful to eat. The Lava (P320) is a luscious and moist chocolate cake served with melted chocolate and topped with vanilla ice cream. I was quite surprised to see their Fried Ice Cream (P280), a unique ice cream rendition with crusted cereal, and chocolate syrup. There’s also the Pannacotta (P300) with milk, cream, and berries as well as the Tiramisu (P320) with lady finger, coffee, and mascarpone cheese.

For those who just want a quick bite or some refreshing drinks, The Pastry Corner located at the other end of the lobby offers freshly made pastries, cakes, sandwiches, coffee, and specialty beverages.

Their lovely Afternoon Tea Set is one of the most affordable and highly recommended deals you can find in the city. For only P800 you can get a three-tier canapé set plus a cup coffee or tea to go along with it.

Another specialty at the Pastry Corner is the Lotus Ensaymada which is made with crushed Lotus Biscoff on top and inside the bread. I really like this ensaymada and you won't find it anywhere else but at B Hotel.

I was also very happy with my Mango Tart paired with a tall glass of Hot Chocolate. You can also enjoy your snacks and desserts with one of their Specialty Beverages like the Ube Vanilla Cream or the Triple Berry Cheesecake.

After that indulgent lunch and afternoon tea break, it was time to go back to my room for an afternoon siesta. Guests at the B Hotel can easily explore the city as malls and activities are all just a few minutes away.

For those who want to stay inside the hotel like me, B Hotel also has a swimming pool located on the third floor. The infinity pool has a surrounding view of the residential houses nearby and is great for kids and families. There is also a Poolside Bar nearby where you can order beverages and snacks while relaxing. Just beside this is the fitness center where you can get a quick workout to burn the calories from all the eating.

For dinner, our group headed downstairs for a sumptuous steak dinner at Johnny's Steak and Grill. You can find this fabulous steakhouse at the ground floor right along Scout Rallos Street which makes it accessible even for guests not staying at the hotel. It is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 5:00pm all the way to 1:00am.

Johnny's Steak and Grill has been serving some of the best steaks in the city ever since it opened in 2016 (New Steakhouse Alert: Johnny’s Steak and Grill Opens in B Hotel Quezon City). It has a casual and hip vibe that is a refreshing change from the traditional steakhouses.

We had a choice of the Roasted Pumpkin Soup (P320) and the Forest Mushroom Soup (P340) for our starter. This hearty bowl comes with herb focaccia bread that goes really well with the warm soup.

You can actually cross-order from the Lobby Cafe's menu and vice versa so you have a diverse selection from burgers and pasta to ribs and steaks. The Tex-Mex Chicken Burger (P580) has a Mexican-style chicken served in a brioche bun. There's also the Sliders (P580) from their Mezzanine Bar served with truffle fries.

We took advantage of their Glazed Ribs Weekend which is offered every Friday to Sunday from 5:00pm to 11:00pm. Guests can indulge in their delectable Honey Bourbon Baby Back Ribs for only P1,350 nett. This comes with both beef and pork ribs served with corn cob and bourbon sauce.

There's also the pretty Australian Lamb Rack (P1,200) which has a French-cut half rack of lamb served with mint jelly, compound butter, and red wine jus. The lamb was cooked magnificently so it doesn't have a gamey taste.

But the highlight of our dinner was definitely the 300 grams MB5 Westholme Australian Wagyu Striploin (P4,000). This steak is one of the highest quality wagyu you can find in the city and it is just so fatty and tender. We really had a great time at Johnny's Steak and Grill. We were all so full from all those meaty dishes so we decided to call it a night. I had such a wonderful rest and sleep that evening.

The next morning, I woke up a bit later since it was the weekend and headed down for our buffet breakfast which is served from 6:00am to 10:00am at the Lobby Cafe.

You can find plenty of breakfast favorites like cereals, breads, pastries, fruits, and salads together with coffee, hot chocolate, and juices.

Bacon is always the centerpiece of hotel breakfasts so I was happy to find it on the table. There were also plenty of other items like longanisa, potato wedges, beef tapa, shakshuka, taho, and an egg station where you can have your choice of eggs cooked according to your preference.

The Abbotsford Community Kitchen is a place to learn to cook healthy meals on a budget. They also have a support system, cooking classes, and cooking lessons for kids.
If you're in the mood for a traditional Italian meal, check out Paliotti's. The restaurant is family owned and has been in business for decades. Its kitchen uses only the highest quality ingredients and its baked goods are made from scratch. Located in the Historic Downtown district, the restaurant's quaint setting is a wonderful place to enjoy a delicious meal.

For a more casual setting, look no further than Banter. It's located in Jubilee Park and serves a variety of flavours. They also have a wide range of ice creams and frozen beverages. A popular dessert option is the fried doughnut.
If you're in the mood to sample a little artisan chocolate, visit A Box of Bonbons. They offer a selection of handmade artisan chocolates. There are also chilled beverages and espresso drinks.
For a more unique dining experience, stop by the Polly Fox Cafe. It's completely gluten-free and has a wide array of delicatessens and breakfast options. Also, you can enjoy a coffee and banana bread in their comfortable, homey cafe.
Abbotsford is close to Vancouver, but not as big as the city. When you're in the area, take a drive east along Highway 1 and you'll discover an agricultural wonderland. As more Chinese newcomers call Halifax home, early signs of a Chinatown emerge
HALIFAX -- In a corner of Halifax's historic south end, Mandarin signs have started to sprout up: They appoint dumpling and dessert restaurants, bubble tea cafes, rental housing and a barbershop.
They are the early signs of a fledgling Chinatown.
It's very small, and as with Chinatowns elsewhere it's not all Chinese -- some of the smattering of businesses specialize in Korean barbecue, Vietnamese pho or Indian groceries. Compared to big-city Chinatowns, it's a blip on the urban landscape.
But for a city more accustomed to Irish pubs and fish and chips, this tiny pocket of businesses around where Barrington Street turns sharply into Inglis Street tells the story of a steady flow of newcomers to Halifax from China.
Halifax, a busy port city of about 400,000 and home to several universities, has long had a small Chinese population. What's changing is the number of Chinese immigrants choosing to make it their permanent home.
As more stay -- rather than returning to China or moving west to Toronto or Vancouver -- a critical mass of Chinese ex-pats is slowly forming, potentially encouraging others to put down roots.
"It's more busy than before," said Mai Duong, co-owner of Ca-Hoa Grocery, a family-owned Asian retailer that has been selling fresh produce and packaged foods on the corner of Victoria Road and Queen Street since 1981.
"There are still a lot of Chinese students, but now more families too."
Under fluorescent lights and colourful paper lanterns, Ca-Hoa's shelves are stocked with large bags of rice, bamboo steamers and teapots, as well as the basic ingredients of Chinese cooking like soy and oyster sauce, rice vinegar, and dried chili peppers.
Ca-Hoa describes itself as "Halifax's Original Asian Grocery," but there are now at least a half-dozen in the port city.
The aging province desperately needs the newcomers. From 2011 to 2016, the number of people aged 15 to 64 dropped precipitously in Atlantic Canada, while the proportion of seniors increased sharply, Statistics Canada 2016 census data showed.
Nova Scotia is aggressively trying to tackle its population crunch by attracting skilled workers, and calls China a "key market" for both immigration and trade.
It appears to be paying off. In 2016, Nova Scotia opened its doors to 5,485 newcomers -- a 61 per cent increase over the year before and the single highest jump since the end of the Second World War, according to figures compiled by the province from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
China is the top source of international students to Nova Scotia, and the third biggest source of immigrants overall, according to the provincial government.
Most of those newcomers appear to be settling in the provincial capital. Halifax had a record population boom in 2016, with the city's per capita population growth outpacing Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa and, just barely, Toronto, according to Statistics Canada figures.
The figures appear to back up anecdotal evidence of a growing Chinese population, and a potential little Chinatown.
"It seems there is a bit of cluster there around Queen Street and at the bottom of Victoria Road around Inglis and Barrington," said Waye Mason, Halifax's deputy mayor and the local councillor for the area.
"There are a lot of international students from Southeast Asian countries and certainly Chinese students that seem less interested in Victorian flats, and the larger apartment buildings in that area seem to be more attractive to them."
Still, while Mason said he has noticed more businesses with Chinese signs and heard chatter about a growing population, he said he has no solid data to back up those casual observations.
Yet there are other signs that seem to support the notion that more Chinese natives are putting down roots in Halifax.
New companies catering to Chinese newcomers have popped up across Halifax, in addition to the cluster near downtown, while established businesses like real estate firms and car dealerships are hiring Mandarin speakers to better serve the burgeoning population.
Halifax Public Libraries said Chinese newcomers made up a third of the participants in its English conversation groups last fall, and circulation of Chinese language books is always high.
The EduNova Co-Operative, which runs various programs for international students, said the number of Chinese students looking to study and stay in Nova Scotia has increased. Chinese students now make up nearly half the 133 students participating in the organization's programs, a spokesman said.
Meanwhile, the city's English-Mandarin newspaper, Dakai Maritimes, has seen its circulation jump to 35,000, up from 5,000 when it was launched five years ago.
Meng Zhao, founder and editor-in-chief, started the paper after graduating from Mount Saint Vincent University to help bridge the gap between Chinese newcomers and locals.
"It can be isolating when you first arrive in a new community," she said. "It's starting to change now, but when I moved here the Chinese population was quite small and I wanted to connect them to each other and the larger community."
While working long hours on the newspaper -- which has since partnered with the Chronicle Herald, the province's biggest daily -- Zhao and her husband started a family and now have a one-year-old and a three-year-old.
"Being a parent is challenging on its own no matter what country you're in, but when you're away from your family and culture it can be hard," she said.
Zhao joined a WeChat group on social media for new Chinese moms living in Halifax, which she said now has close to 400 members.
They share advice and offer support online, and also meet up for play dates at local libraries and parks to talk about the experience of raising a family in Nova Scotia.
"I've been here long enough to integrate into the local culture and lifestyle, but for some who don't speak the language fluently or have support it's really difficult," Zhao said. "We help each other out."
Yao Chen moved to Halifax in 2008 to study at Saint Mary's University.
Many of his friends moved to Toronto upon graduating, but Chen stayed in Halifax and recently became a real estate agent with Viewpoint Realty.
While he said there are ways to encourage more Chinese graduates to settle here -- including improving immigrants' ability to bring their parents -- he said the city's real estate investment opportunities go a long way to making the city attractive to foreigners.
"The real estate market in Halifax hasn't been as appealing as other cities like Toronto or Vancouver," Chen said. "But that was before other governments introduced foreign buyer taxes."
Since then, Chen said Chinese newcomers are starting to recognize that properties in Halifax are more affordable and the quality of life better than in bigger cities.
"I think Chinese immigrants are starting to see that there are good opportunities here," agreed Ran Jin, another newcomer from China who recently moved from Shanghai and is now a sales consultant with Halifax's Land Rover dealership.
"It's a small city and the population still needs to grow, but there are more options here now for newcomers."

The calamansi is a small green citrus fruit that is native to the Philippines and some other Southeast Asian countries. Also known as the Philippine lime, the calamansi has a unique sour fruity taste quite unlike any other citrus fruit. It is commonly used as a condiment mixed with soy sauce, vinegar, and chilis but can also be used as a dressing for native Filipino salads and ceviche as well as a preserving or pickling agent. Like other citrus fruits, calamansi has high levels of Vitamin C that are very helpful in fighting off viral and bacterial infections. The Vitamin C present in the fruit also helps to improve oral hygiene and the acidity of the fruit can aid digestion and weight loss.
A popular way to consume calamansi is to turn it into a juice. It is a good alternative to more artificial and sugar laden powdered juice mixes available on the market. The intense flavour of the calamansi means that a little goes a long way and not many fruits are needed for a serving of the juice. Another way to consume calamansi is to use it in marinades for meat and seafood dishes. The acid in the calamansi acts as a tenderizer allowing for meats that are marinated with its juice to remain tender and juicy even when cooked. Calamansi can even be used as a curdling agent to make sour cream and yogurt, the versatility of this little fruit is truly advantageous for Filipinos.
It is becoming more common nowadays to see calamansi incorporated into dessert items in cafes and restaurants. A calamansi cake topped with candied calamansi utilizes the contrast between sweet and sour flavours very well to push the flavour of the dish forward. You go to Stanford right? What's the best food in town?
okay im REALLT late to this forgive me but if youre looking for fancy/expensive food youre in luck! Palo Alto is ridiculous. All around best food in town is NOLA--New Orleans/Cajun food, great drinks, and the best beignets outside of Cafe du Monde. The “inside” is actually an inner courtyard with a fountain and mardi gras beads and wrought-iron molding. It’s literally like going to New Orleans. But its expensive as hell. I only really go on dates when I can reasonably expect the other guy to pick up the tab :)
Also expensive but less so is Pizzeria Delfina, which is pizza. Good pizza! But expensive pizza. 
More affordable is the Peninsula Cafe/Diner, which has diner food (no shit), Siam Royal/Burma Ruby/Rangoon Ruby, three Southeast Asian restaurants (actually the latter two are a bit pricey) that are REALLY GOOD, and of course a Whole Foods with its hot bar. 
That’s all in Palo Alto. On campus, the best eating is indubitably Treehouse/Ray’s Grill, which both have amazing burritos, burgers/veggie burgers, assorted Indian foods, and pizza. TAP (The Axe and Palm) has less-good but still okay diner food and shakes (including pretty amazing sweet potato fries). IDk which dining halls are open in the summer but FloMo and Ricker are the best. Do not go to Arrillaga or Wilbur or Lag. (Im being dramatic. its edible but if youre looking to enjoy something youre eating Search Elsewhere)
As for dessert, there are some good ice cream places in PA, and some good boba places too (i like T4 or Sharetea) but the best of all of them is in the Stanford Mall and is called the Pressed Juicery and it has like sorbet? I guess? Its the equivalent of fancy whole foods cold-pressed juices except they make it into soft-serve texture and it is GLORIOUS and not as expensive as it sounds! Some are literally made of kale and spinach and grass but taste amazing.
Anyway thats all! hope im not too late!
