I'm nervous about dming a game for my friends. Any tips?

it will likely surprise few people to know that my advice about DM’ing is actually pretty much the same as most of my advice about sex, which is that communication can certainly never hurt.

literally just talk to your players about their characters and their ideas and their hopes and expectations for the fun game you’re all going to play together. talk to them as a group, talk to them solo, keep those lines of communication open and know that it goes both ways - my players know that they can always message me ideas for things that could happen to their characters, and I can always hit them up with questions about their backstory or stuff that I think might be cool for them. I literally have a 3 way call planned tonight with two of my friends who are playing twins so that we can flesh out what their family and hometown are like in case the party ever ends up there.

or, alternatively, it doesn’t have to be that deep and you don’t have to do NEARLY that much work. me and my players talk so much because we’re telling a layered, emotionally messy story that has involved literal HOURS of just roleplaying characters talking about their feelings and motivations with nary a combat roll in sight; that’s not everyone’s cup of tea and it doesn’t have to be. if you and your players just want to spend a few hours a week playing out the wacky adventures of Dildo Baggins and Lady Sparklehooves trying to retrieve a magic bong from the devil and not think about it at all outside of your sessions, that’s also a-okay. 

but you won’t know what everybody wants unless you all talk about it.
