SAINT OF THE DAY (February 19)
Tumblr media
Conrad was born into a noble family in northern Italy. He married the daughter of a nobleman named Euphrosyne.
One day, while he was hunting, Conrad ordered his attendants to make a fire. The wind carried the flames, which set fire to nearby fields, forests, towns, and villages.
Upon seeing this, Conrad ran away in fear.
Because he ran, an innocent man was convicted for spreading the fire and was condemned to death as punishment.
Upon hearing this, Conrad stepped forth to accept the blame, saving the innocent man's life.
He paid for the damaged property and he and his wife gave everything they owned to the poor in recompense.
Conrad then left to join a group of Franciscan hermits, and his wife joined the Poor Clares.
Word eventually spread of Conrad's holiness, piety and gift of healing.
When many visitors began to destroy his life of silence and solitude, he moved to Sicily where he lived and prayed as a hermit for 36 years.
Legends say that when the Bishop of Syracuse visited him, the bishop asked Conrad if he had any food to offer guests.
Conrad went to his cell and returned with newly-made cakes, which the bishop accepted as a miracle.
Conrad visited the bishop later to make a general confession to him. As he arrived, Conrad was surrounded by fluttering birds.
Conrad died kneeling before a crucifix.

Matilda
Can we talk about Matilda of Canossa? She’s also known as Matilda of Tuscany, and she is one of my FAVORITE examples of how women kicked ass in the Middle Ages. So I’m going to talk about her for a second. The Iron Shield of the Papacy.
In her life, Matilda...
Inherited the House of Canossa and all of its land, money, and influence when her older brother and sister died.
Checked out of a marriage with her stepbrother and took herself off to another city ENTIRELY because she didn’t like the dude, and no one was going to make her stay.
When her husband tried to claim stuff that she had inherited, she went to the estate that her husband had, and managed to get them to declare it in HER name instead.
Hubby ended up being assassinated. It wasn’t her doing, but she also didn’t cry into any pillows over it.
King Henry IV was her second cousin. She supported Pope Gregory VII and the reform that he wanted to do. This was a problem.
Henry IV and Pope Greg did NOT get along, and Pope Greg even excommunicated Hank and a bunch of Bishops for dragging Greg during a synod at Worms (yes, Worms).
Hank made a pilgrimage to Canossa where Greg was hanging with Matilda so that he could apologize, and Matilda made him wait outside in the snow for three days before he could see the Pope. Greg forgave Hank and welcomed him back to the Church.
Then excommunicated him again.
Hank and the Bishops tried to assassinate Greg, and Matilda’s armies were like NOPE.
Hank tried to claim some of her land was HIS to overlord, but she had been through this already and knew what to do. She gave it all to the Pope.
Hank was kind of mad about this and kept picking fights. She had a whole lot of victories, but not enough.
Matilda captured a Bishop during a battle. A whole ass Bishop. Like in chess.
Hank got overconfident and tried to siege Canossa, but failed and people began to question his manhood. Which is fair, because Matilda took the man’s eldest son AND his wife.
Hank’s oldest son, Conrad, and a bunch of German princes decided they liked Matilda better, and she helped him escape when his Dad imprisoned him and got him declared King of Italy and even arranged his marriage with the daughter of the King of Sicily.
Hank’s wife, that he had imprisoned in a Monastery, was able to escape with Matilda’s help and she even had her testify to the Council of Piacenza about what a jerk Hank was.
In her 40’s, Matilda entered a political marriage with a dude 25 years her junior (he was between 15 and 17), and they ended up separating because what could they possibly have in common?
With the help of the First Crusades, she was able to finally restore Pope Urban II to Rome.
People burned down a castle when they thought she had died, and then learned that she was still alive.
She is one of only six women buried in the Basilica of St. Peter in Vatican City.

One day while hunting he ordered attendants to set fire to some brush in order to flush out the game. The fire spread to nearby fields and to a large forest. Conrad fled. An innocent peasant was imprisoned, tortured to confess, and condemned to death. Conrad confessed his guilt, saved the man’s life, and paid for the damaged property. Soon after this event, Conrad and his wife agreed to separate: she to a Poor Clare monastery and he to a group of hermits following the Third Order Rule. His reputation for holiness, however, spread quickly. Since his many visitors destroyed his solitude, Conrad went to a more remote spot in Sicily where he lived 36 years as a hermit, praying for himself and for the rest of the world. The miracle for which Conrad is best known is the “Miracle of the Bread”. This developed during the aforementioned famine which afflicted Sicily as a result of a severe outbreak of the bubonic plague on the island during 1348-49. During that catastrophe, anyone who approached the hermit for help was given a loaf of bread, still warm, which, it was said, he had received from the angels. On his feast day, the Parish Church of San Corrado in Noto commemorates him by the distribution of blessed bread. https://www.instagram.com/p/CaKVJnrr1mL/?utm_medium=tumblr

Conrad died while in prayer, kneeling before a crucifix, on 19 February 1351, the day he had predicted.
Pope Leo X beatified Conrad on 12 July 1515.
On 2 June 1625, he was canonized by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese, who was the Duke of Parma and Piacenza in a solemn ceremony at the cathedral of Piacenza, where it was declared an obligatory feast.
On 12 September of that same year, permission was granted to the Franciscan Order by Pope Urban VIII for a distinct text for the Divine Office and Mass to be used for his feast.
Today, it is celebrated solely by the Third Order of St. Francis to which he belonged.
