10 Thrifting Tips – Part ? I lost count just check my thrifting tag

1) Make friends with the staff. If you go into a particular thrift store frequently it’s well worth it to get friendly with the staff. Ask them about their day, chat with them about what you’re buying, infodump if you’ve found something exciting and unusual. When the staff get to know you and know what you buy they’ll start pointing out things in the store that have come in since the last time you were there, that fit your interests. They may even start putting things aside for you. Recently I walked into my favorite thrift store and had 2 separate staff members say ‘Oh I’ve got something for you’. Plus having the staff greet you by name and having little inside jokes with them just makes the whole experience more fun.

2) Brita jugs turn up at the thrift store frequently. If tap water in your area is safe but has A Taste, keep an eye out at the thrift store.

3) Coffee making equipment. Capsule coffee makers, the wire racks that hold the capsules, French presses, these all get donated frequently. The occasional espresso machine comes in – and goes out very quickly. Now and then you’ll find pour-over coffee equipment. If you like your bean juice you can get the equipment you need to make fancy bean juice at the thrift store.

4) Handmade pottery mugs. Story time: About 6 or 7 years ago I went into a thrift store and someone had obviously just cleaned out their mug cupboard and donated a pile of handmade pottery. I bought 4 because I thought they were cool, very tactile, nice to hold. This AWOKE something in me. Humans have used handmade pottery for thousands of years and there’s something about holding a handmade mug that sparks a genetic memory of warmth and comfort. Pottery also has much better thermal properties than mass produced ceramic, hot stays hot longer and vice versa with cold. Build up a little collection of handmade pottery mugs from the thrift store, each one has its own personality and it brings joy using them.

5) In the same vein: teaspoons. Build up a collection of fun teaspoons and take joy from using different ones depending on your mood. I have one with an owl on the end and another with a rose, a brass one with a wiggly handle in the shape of a snake, one that has the branding of an airline that now only uses wooden stirrers - probably because people kept pocketing the stainless-steel teaspoons (I always wanted to steal one as a child but never had the nerve). Whenever I need a teaspoon it’s always a little endorphin boost to open the drawer and select the perfect one for today.

6) If you need something to do a specific job, be patient, you will find the perfect thing eventually. I switched to solid shampoo and my old soap dish wasn’t big enough to hold my shampoo bar and my regular soap, so I waited and watched and found the perfect little glass tray that was exactly the right size and fits perfectly on the shelf in my shower. I could have bought a brand new made-for-that-purpose multi soap holder, but it wouldn’t have been as cool looking and when I’m done with it, it wouldn’t necessarily get another life.

7) Gift supplies. Thrift stores often have a selection of unused gift wrap, bags, bows, cards. It’s worth it to sift through what they’ve got and buy any you think you might use – even if you don’t have an immediate use for it. That stuff can get expensive so if you can create a small stash then, when you need it, you won’t have to shell out $$.

8) Look for things that can be made over – or thrift flipped as the DIY content creators like to say. There’s so much satisfaction from looking at something that was plain ugly when you bought it and you’ve turned it into something pretty. It doesn’t need to be a major transformation that requires 5 different power-tools and 100 bucks worth of supplies. It can be as simple as a lick of paint, but every time you look at you will feel good about it.

9) Sometimes it’s worth buying something that’s just really cool and figuring out a use for it later. I bought the coolest little silver plated mustard pot; it has 3 legs and at the top of each leg is a lion head. Do I eat mustard much? No. Did I know what the heck I would use it for? No. I get bad indigestion and keep antacids on hand, I hate how once you tear open the roll, they tend to spill everywhere so I like to put them in something. Guess what holds exactly one roll of antacids? If something is just freaking awesome but you don’t know what you’d use it for, you will find a use (and it will be so much cooler than anything else you might have bought for that purpose).

10) Use the fancy stuff. Don’t ever look at something in a thrift store and think: that’s too fancy, I’ll never use it. If it’s not bought and used it ends up in landfill. Save it from the landfill and use it. Today I bought the most OTT fancy silver pepper shaker to sit next to my stove and hold ground pepper for cooking with, one of my housemates never puts the damn pepper back in the cupboard when he’s finished with it, so now we have this ostentatious silver shaker next to the stove top. One of my dogs can be relied upon to get half of his food on the floor before he hoovers it up, I could have got a plastic mat to feed him on but I had a spare thrifted marble cutting/serving board (I have a problem, I own 3, I have so much trouble resisting them), and another plus - he can’t destroy it like he would a plastic mat. I keep my toothbrush in a crystal bud vase. I decant my micellar water into a bottle shaped like a seahorse. I eat off pretty vintage pink glass plates. Using the fancy stuff from thrift stores both helps you romanticize your own life and it gives these items another life. Do be sensible though, some items made before the early 1970s including glassware and dinnerware contain lead in the decoration so do your due diligence and be safe.

BANGOR BROWNIES (ORIGINAL CHOCOLATE BROWNIES, 1904)

In celebration of my husband's birthday, and since he is not a fan of cake, I made him my next Tasting History recipe: Bangor Brownies, the original chocolate brownie recipe from 1904. There are several recipes that claim to be the original brownie, among them the first recipe to be titled 'Brownies', from 1896. However, this recipe does not include any chocolate, and instead uses only molasses to get the brown colouring. Another recipe comes from Palmer House: Bertha Palmer tasked the pastry chef of the hotel, Joseph Stehl, to create an easily-transportable, cake-like chocolate treat to bring to the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, Illinois. While this is likely where the idea of the brownie originated, it was not called a 'brownie' until much later. And so, the recipe I am using today is the first instance (of two recipes published around the same time) of a recipe for a cake-like chocolate square titled as a 'brownie'. This recipe for Bangor Brownies comes from the Service Club Cook Book, published by the Service Club of Chicago in 1904. And why is Bangor in the name? The story goes that a housewife from Bangor, Maine forgot to put baking powder into her chocolate cake, and as a result, it was deflated and gooey - but still very delicious. While none of this can be verified, there exists quite the smattering of 'Bangor Brownies' recipes from the early 20th century which closely resemble the modern brownie. Either way, let's see if the Bangor Brownies from 1904 resemble the ones of today for ourselves! My experience making it:

I kept to the stated measurements for the ingredients for today, because I foresee myself gobbling these up pretty fast, and I have to leave enough for the birthday boy! Since I couldn't find Baker's unsweetened chocolate here in Germany, I used Zartbitter chocolate instead, which is a plain dark chocolate used in baking here. Also, since I really don't like woodchips... ahem, walnuts in my brownies, I left them out entirely.

I began by leaving the salted butter out to soften and preheating the oven. I also lined a baking pan (10 x 8 inches, since I didn't have a 8 x 8-inch pan) with parchment paper. I found it a bit strange to butter the baking pan and then immediately cover that up with parchment paper, so I didn't bother doing this step and instead just made sure my parchment paper fit the pan nice and snug with some well-placed snips with scissors on the corners. Before beginning, I also set a small pot of water on the stove to simmer in order to prepare for the step requiring me to melt the chocolate. Once the butter was soft enough, I measured and portioned out the ingredients and got my equipment ready. Max uses a spatula for a lot of his mixing, but I opted to primarily use an electric hand-mixer on the lowest setting in order to better combine things.

I used my hand-mixer to whip up the butter a bit in a large bowl, then added the sugar and continued to mix until it was fluffy and combined. I took a break from mixing to melt my chocolate in a small stainless steel bowl held over the pot of boiling water by a metal strainer. I gave it a mix here and there with a small spoon to make sure it melted evenly. Once it was smooth and completely melted, I added the chocolate to the large bowl and continued mixing on low until the chocolate was fully integrated into the sugar and butter mixture - this took no time! I let it sit for a minute or two to cool while I cracked the eggs and whisked them lightly in a small bowl. After the mixture in the large bowl had cooled a bit, I added the eggs in and folded them into the mixture with a spatula, giving them a real quick whip from the electric hand-mixer before moving on to the next step. I poured in half the flour and used the hand-mixer to mix that in as best as possible. Next, I added in the remaining flour and proceeded to mix until all the flour was combined. I was really surprised at the consistency: it was thicker than I expected, approaching cookie dough texture. Max said to pour it into the baking pan at this point, but mine simply would not pour, so I had to slop it in there with a spatula and spread it in the pan manually. I could already tell that using a larger pan than called for was going to affect the thickness of my brownies, but knowing what ingredients were involved, I figured they couldn't end up tasting that bad, at least. I put the pan in the oven and let it cook for 20 minutes. At this point, I checked it, and it really didn't look like it had cooked much at all. So, I left it in another 10 minutes. When I checked it again, the middle was still quite jiggly, but the top was starting to form those quintessential 'cracks' of the top crust of a brownie. I left it in for another 5 minutes, and thought it was looking ready, so I tried both the toothpick method and Max's knife method to see if the inside was cooked. Both came out looking fine, so after letting the brownies rest for 5 minutes, I tried taking the baking paper (with the brownies on top) out. They still seemed too soft, so I put them back into the pan and in the oven for a couple more minutes, again taking them out and letting the pan sit to cool for 5 minutes afterwards. I decided then to cut them into squares, revealing still a quite gooey centre and bottom. The top of the brownies looked really good, however. To let them finish cooling, I put each square on a few paper towels to absorb the oozing butter coming out of the bottoms. Luckily I usually like a gooey brownie!

My experience tasting it:

Being the sweet-tooth gremlin I am, I simply could not wait until the brownies cooled to try them. As soon as I was putting them on the paper towels to cool, I made the decision to stuff one in my mouth - the absolute best decision! It was gooey, warm, and buttery, with a measured chocolate taste. It definitely wasn't the chocolatiest of brownies I have tried, but it had enough chocolate flavour for it to be the main character of the dessert. Specifically though, what was bringing the tantalizing gooeyness was not really the under-baking, but the amount of butter oozing out. It was so wonderful I even did a little dance, and in my mind - just like in Ratatouille when the food critic goes back to his childhood after tasting one bite - I went back to high school mornings when the cafeteria ladies would bring out fresh baked cookies... 4 for a dollar, they would literally just melt together in the bag they sold them in so that you'd have to eat handfuls of mush - the best-tasting mush there is. This recipe rivals every modern brownie I have tasted, and I find it amazing that some of the original brownie recipes already tasted this good! I will not only be making this recipe again, but it will probably become my main brownie recipe (with a few timing adjustments for the bake-time). I can't wait to surprise my husband with these later. One thing's for sure: these Bangor Brownies are bangin'! Bangor Brownies original recipe (1904)

Sourced from the Service Club Cook Book by the Service Club of Chicago (1904).

Bangor Brownies Cream one-half cup of butter, one cup sugar. Add two squares (one-quarter cake) Baker’s chocolate, melted, two eggs. One half-cup pastry flour and one-half cup chopped walnuts. Spread on baking tins and bake fifteen minutes in a moderate oven.

Modern Recipe

Based on the recipe from the Service Club Cook Book by the Service Club of Chicago (1904) and Max Miller’s version in his Tasting History video.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup (115 g) salted butter, softened

1 cup (200 g) sugar

2 oz (57 g) Baker’s unsweetened chocolate

2 eggs

1/2 cup (60 g) pastry flour or all purpose flour

1/2 cup (60 g) chopped walnuts

Method:

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter the bottom and sides of an 8x8 inch (20x20 cm) square pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.

Beat the butter until it’s nice and smooth. Add the sugar and beat until it’s fluffy.

Melt the chocolate by heating an inch or two (3 to 6 cm) of water in a small saucepan to a simmer. Put the chocolate in a heat-safe bowl and place it over the simmering water, making sure that the bottom of the bowl doesn’t come into contact with the water. You just want the steam to gently melt the chocolate. Stir it a few times to help it melt, and it should be ready in a couple of minutes.

Add the melted chocolate to the butter and sugar mixture and stir it to combine. Be sure to stir it well enough so that no streaks of chocolate remain and the whole mixture has cooled a bit. If the mixture is too hot, it can scramble the eggs in the next step.

Lightly beat the eggs just to break them up and mix them together, then stir them into the brownie batter.

After the eggs have been fully incorporated, add half of the flour and gently mix it in, then mix in the other half.

Stir in the walnuts.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly into all the corners.

Bake for 20 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out with some gooey bits sticking to it. You don’t want it liquidy, but you also don’t want the knife to come out clean.

When the brownies are done, set them on a wire rack to cool for 5 minutes, then turn them out and let them cool completely.

Cut into squares and serve them forth.

AE101 TRD 2000

In October 1994, Toyota Racing Development (TRD) introduced the AE101 TRD 2000, a highly exclusive version of the Corolla GT sedan designed specifically for the Japanese market. This model was meticulously engineered to emulate the performance specifications of the 1994 Corolla JTCC race car. Under the hood, the TRD 2000 featured a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter 3S-GE engine, delivering 180 PS (132 kW), coupled with a new 5-speed S54 manual gearbox. To enhance its performance, TRD equipped the car with a heavy-duty clutch, a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD), and a quick shifter, ensuring precise and responsive gear changes.

The TRD 2000's handling was significantly improved with a new suspension system that lowered the ride height by 20 mm, alongside 15-inch TRD Type-FT wheels shod with Yokohama Grand Prix M5 tires. The braking system was upgraded with TRD brakes, providing superior stopping power. A stainless steel dual exhaust system not only improved performance but also added a distinctive sound. The car's exterior featured a subtle trunk spoiler and was available exclusively in white, giving it a clean and sporty appearance.

Inside, the TRD 2000 was fitted with König Prinz P200 bucket seats and a TRD steering wheel, creating a driver-focused cockpit. Despite its impressive features and race-inspired design, the TRD 2000 was a rare sight on the roads. Originally, 99 units were planned for production, but only 10 were sold due to the high price tag, which was even higher than the cost of the Celica GT-Four ST205. This limited availability and unique blend of performance and refinement make the TRD 2000 a coveted piece of Toyota's automotive history.

The smell of iron filled my nose as I soldered two pieces of titanium together. Molding them into the perfect shape to fit around an arm. Just enough space to feel comfy, yet tight enough to be of use. The titanium hook caught a glint of yellow light beaming from the overhead lamp above. A loud pounding reverberated through the room. My gaze darted toward the door, wondering if I’d mistook the sound for a knock. Furrowing my brows and standing up from my desk, I patiently waited for an affirmation. An acknowledgment that my mind wasn’t slipping. And it came. A harsher, angrier knock echoed around me. I started toward the door, stretching all four of my arms above my head. twisting the knob and pulling the door open, my gaze settled upon crimson eyes and a bloody mess. A man, who looked to be a quilt of purple and pale skin, and a familiar face.

“You got blood all over my door,” I huffed as I used three of my arms to lift the limp body. Warmth trickled down my torso as the man’s blood soaked into my shirt, turning the once pristine white fabric into a splotchy mess of red.

“I’ll pay you whatever. I kinda need this guy.” Tomura followed behind me, peering over my shoulders. His brows knit together, lips pressing into a thin line. I shot him a vacant glance as I set the body in my arms on a stainless steel surgical table.

“Two hundred fifteen thousand,” I muttered.

“What?! That’s way more than-”

“After hours and cleaning fee, jackass.” I huffed. My eyes drifted to a rip in the man’s jeans. Soaked with deep, coagulated blood. High on his thigh, and close enough to make my eyes widen as I realized just how close he was to death. The man gritted his teeth, hands attempting to grasp at the wound. I swatted his fingers away and turned to Tomura. I threw him a clean rag as my other hands dipped into the box of surgical gloves. I slid the latex over all of my fingers with a snap and began sifting through a pile of equipment. My fingers settled on a needle, grasping the plastic in my hand. I watched as Tomura placed the rag over the man’s leg, pressing down on the wound. He writhed, body thrashing against the table. I turned, shifting my focus to the refrigerator. Pulling the door open, my eyes scanned across rows and rows of neatly categorized vials. My lips moved in a wordless speech as I read the labels, stopping once I reached a vial of morphine. I plucked the bottle from its place, pinching it between two fingers, and shifted it to my palm. The chilled suspension pricked at my skin as I rolled the bottle between my palms, slowly, so as to not provoke any air bubbles. Tilting the vial upside down, I uncapped the needle and sunk the tip of it into the silicone cap. I pulled back on the plunger, drawing up the liquid. I chose a larger dose. Enough to send him into a nice high, but not enough to suppress respiration. I flicked my finger against the shaft of the syringe and approached the table. Using my other hands, I pulled the tourniquet tight around his arm. Pressing my fingers into his skin, I poked and prodded, hoping that a vein would show itself through the mess of burned skin that adorned his arm. The man shifted, eyes focused on the needle perched between my fingers. I pressed a free hand into his chest, holding him still. My eyes caught a glimpse of something, just enough to make me confident. A small, protruding, branch, just above the pit of his elbow. I swiftly grabbed an alcohol wipe, tore it between my teeth, and coated his skin with the substance. I lined the needle up with the vein, hopefully, a vein, and pushed through. I gently pulled back on the plunger, only to be met with a rich red. Slow-moving blood filled the tip of the syringe. I sighed, knowing I was in a vein, and pushed down, injecting the morphine into his system. His resistance stopped. I watched as his head lolled to the side. Pressing two fingers into his wrist, I felt for a pulse, a pulse which met my touch with a strong, pounding beat. I withdrew the needle, placing a cotton ball in its stead and slowly moving his arm, folding it to keep pressure on the vein. Two of my hands grasped at his belt, sliding the leather through his belt loops and leaving it to the side. The buckle clattered against the concrete floor. I undid his button and began pulling the denim down his legs to expose the wound. Tomura moved to the side, watching as I discarded the denim, tossing it onto the floor. I was met with a pair of black boxers that had flames running up the legs, and a wound that was spilling blood onto his marred skin.

“Nice panties.” I huffed, grabbing a pair of tweezers and a dish from a tray. I pulled the overhead light down above my head, further illuminating the mess of damaged flesh. And then I saw it. Past the layers and layers of shredded skin and muscle, was a small glimmer of silver, coated in dried, flaking blood. I sunk the tweezers into the wound, pushing past the edges of ripped muscle fibers. The man thrashed against my touch, his leg pulling away from my hand. I shot Tomura a glance, one that could communicate more than words. He stepped toward the table and held the man back. He dug his heels into the man’s shoulders. The man cried out as I grasped onto the bullet. My tweezers retreated from the wound, bringing the intact bullet along with it.

“Just one?” I asked, not looking up from the wound.

“Mhm.”

I set the dish aside, the steel clattering against the tray. Glancing at the sea of titanium in front of me, I decided to use a staple gun over stitches. I grabbed the gun, shifting it in my hands. With tweezers, I pinched the skin of the wound together. Lining the end of the gun up to the slit, I pushed down on the trigger. The machine clicked as it pushed the small metal staple through his skin. A guttural cry lurched from the man’s mouth, fading into silence. With a free hand, I checked his pulse again. Still strong, although he’d most likely gone into shock. I cursed at myself for forgetting to buy anesthetic. I looked up from the wound, eyes scanning across shaking gloved hands.

“He’s fine,” I muttered as I pushed a second staple into the man’s skin. Taking advantage of the stillness of my patient, I swiftly added a third staple, tugging the wound closed into a bulging seam. I pressed a cotton pad over the wound, curling gauze wrap around the damaged limb. I sighed and pulled my gloves off, tossing them toward the trash can. They landed on the floor, splattering blood onto the concrete upon impact. Tomura approached the surgical table, fingers grabbing at the man.

“You’re not moving him.” I huffed as I walked away toward a sink. I turned the faucet on, letting the cold water wash over my skin. I scrubbed the blood from my hands, digging my nails into my skin to scrape the dried flecks away.

“What do you want me to do?” He said softly.

“Wait a good twelve hours…minimum,” I mumbled as I turned off the sink. “Go get a coffee or go to an ATM and get my damn money. I don’t give a fuck what you do. But if he rips his staples out you’re gonna be in hot shit.”

“Well, what are you gonna do? With him, I mean.”

“Give him a good nap. At least I can make sure he’s healing from here.” I crossed two of my arms over my chest and walked back to the table. Tomura turned and slowly made his way to the door. The room was still, filled with a silence only broken up with soft music. I grabbed the man’s wrist and pressed my fingers into his skin. While the shock had lulled him into a catatonic state, his body was pushing forwards. I could feel the blood thumping against his arteries. I pulled back, only to slip my arms underneath his body. I lifted him off of the table and started off down the hallway. Encroaching upon a door, I turned the knob and stepped into the room. I set him down onto the plush covers of my bed, with another arm I grabbed a towel off of the nightstand and laid it out under his wound, gently elevating the limb off of the mattress. I draped a blanket over him, moving the fabric up over his hip so as not to obscure my view of his leg. He was still, body wrapped in the holds of a high that lulled him into a deep slumber. But he was alive. Femoral intact. I dropped my body onto the couch beside my bed. Kicking my shoes off of my feet, I sprawled out across the cushions. Stretching out my aching arms before wrapping them around my torso as sleep tugged at me. Pulling me closer, and closer, into darkness.

Heat. It lapped at my skin, ripping me from my slumber. My eyelids fluttered open, only to be met with a flurry of cerulean. My torso shot up off of the couch as my eyes settled on the figure in front of me.

“Who the fuck are you,” the man spoke in a deep voice, seething with rage. Lifting up his palm, he revealed a flame, close enough to make the air waver with heat. I pushed his wrist away, the heat of his skin singing my fingers.

“The person who just performed surgery on you,” I huffed and laid back down on the couch. “You kill me and you’re killing yourself. I'm the one who takes care of procedures for the league.” The flame faded, receding back into the man’s palm. His expression softened, brows raising from their furrowed position.

“Where’s Shigaraki?” He asked in a soft voice, just loud enough to prick at my eardrums.

“I told him to let you rest,” I explained, stretching out my limbs, the ache in my muscles fading. The man looked down at his bandaged thigh. A faint layer of red soaked into the bandages. His fingers tugged at the wrap. I leaned forwards, swatting his hands away from the wound. He pursed his lips and threw his body onto the bed, groaning loudly and throwing his head back.

“Where’s my shit?” He spat, arms crossing over his chest.

“Down the hall.” I lifted a finger and pointed to the door. His gaze followed before dropping back to the ceiling.

“You’re not gonna get it for me? Since I have to rest, you might as well.” His chest rumbled as he chuckled, the baritone rattling the walls. I clicked my tongue and sighed, sitting up off the couch.

“You decided to wear jeans and shoes to a gunfight, that’s your problem.” I slid my hand into my pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes.

“Can I have one?” The man asked, holding out his hand.

“As long as you got a light.” I plucked a cigarette from the pack and handed it to him before taking another and perching it between my lips. A blue flame erupted from his index finger. He held the flame to his cigarette, waiting until the glow of embers blossomed from the end. He took a drag and moved his finger to me. I could feel the heat radiating from him, bathing my skin in warmth. I pulled smoke from the cigarette down into my lungs, holding it and sinking into the feeling of my tingling fingers. Static washed over my brain as I let the smoke trickle from my lips.

“What’s your name?” The man spoke up. My eyes scanned his form. He sat on the edge of my bed, one leg up on the mattress. His wrist rested on his knee. Smoke seeped from the end of his cigarette.

I told him my name, “What about you? I’ve been calling you ‘flame panties’ in my head since I got you on the table.” He chuckled, lips curling up into a smile.

“It’s Dabi.”

He stood in my doorway. Shirt soaked in blood. Eyes half-lidded.

Heavy-duty racks for larger tanks (from B&Q in the UK, but similar options are available in all countries) and compact racks for smaller setups like 6.6-gallon tanks & shrimp jars (from Amazon).

Both are simple, cheap storage racks!

Rack Material

Stainless steel: Rust & mold resistant = my top choice.

Wood: Works well but depends on the build quality.

Plastic: ❌ Too flimsy from what i’ve seen.

Stick with stainless steel or wood for durability and peace of mind.

Shelf Material

Many racks come with MDF shelves, but MDF can warp when wet.

Replace MDF with plywood for better water resistance.

OR be extra careful during water changes to avoid spills! 🌊

Size Your Shelves Measure your tanks and add 50% more space for tools, accessories, etc. Example: A 100x50 cm tank = a 150x75 cm shelf.

This ensures everything fits comfortably and makes maintenance easier! 🛠️

Load Capacity

Double the volume of your tank (in liters) and ensure the rack supports that weight (in kg).

Example: A 25L tank needs a rack with a 50kg capacity.

This accounts for water, substrate, fish, and equipment.

Rack Placement

Choose a strong, level floor (concrete is ideal).

Avoid windows to prevent algae (use blackout curtains if needed).
