Pour la première fois , le spectacle n'est pas joué dans un théâtre ou une salle de concert dédiée , mais au Festival de Lanaudière au Canada ! Avant de finalement déménager en 1987 au théâtre Maisonneuve de Montréal

Le spectacle n'a pas été très bien accueilli par le public , l'orchestration des chansons étrangement accélérer , une scène complètement vide de décors et des costumes pauvres / trop minimalistes . Cette version est considérer comme une des moins bonne de Starmania . Il n'existe pas de captation du spectacle mais il subsiste un album et les habituelles vidéos d'archives :

Cette version reprend précisément la version de 1980 en rajoutant simplement la chanson " Un enfant de la pollution" .

Si Richard et Normand Groulx portent le même nom de famille c'est parce qu'ils sont frères ! Ils ont d'ailleurs monté un groupe à leurs noms :

💫 Starmania III Quebec version 86-87, or

Cheap and quick revival production, but seems a foundation for what became “Edition Rouge” in 1988. It looks like almost all the criticism was addressed by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon ✨

Archive footage from a Sept 11, 1988 news segment on French television, in which Luc Plamondon talks about the new show.

Most interesting to me, apart from rehearsal footage which I'm always a sucker for, is the exchange at 3:40 (transcribed & translated in full under the cut) which makes it clear that Plamondon & Berger were dissatisfied with the way the story played out in the original show and sought to rework it for clarity in later stagings so it would be more "like a movie."

This tracks fully with my own impression of the 88 show (pedagogical to a fault in the way it adds narrative explanations of who's who, what they're doing, how they relate to each other) but for me what's interesting is that I found the 88 show is so much 'poorer' than the original (and the 2022 version) precisely for that reason. Sure, we didn't really need the 70s alien god or Johnny's soul ascending to join the forces of the universe, but at least it has a whismy, a poetry which the straightforward 88 version sorely lacks if you ask me.

And I think it's interesting that the 2022 version goes back to a more original version -- Thomas Jolly has said that he was initially asked to make the show using the 88 libretto, but that he refused -- and with the help of some song order swaps and clever staging, but crucially without adding anything - except the "duo d'adieu" which is from 88 I believe - tells that story I think in perhaps its most effective way ever, original included.

Présentateur: Alors moi j'avais aimé Starmania il y a 9 ans, j'y suis allé, j'ai acheté le disque... Qu'est ce qui pourrait me motiver aujourd'hui d'y retourner?

[Host: So I loved Starmania 9 years ago, I went, I bought the record... What could motivate me to go back today?]

LP: Est-ce que vous aviez compris l'histoire, y'a 10 ans ? Parce que y'a 10 ans, les gens sortaient en disant 'les chansons sont formidables etc., le spectacle, mais on comprend rien à l'histoire'. Cette fois-ci -- d'abord on l'a monté 2x au Québec, en 80 et en 86, et à chaque fois on a retravaillé, et maintenant ça se lit comme un film, quoi. On suit l'histoire comme un film. Les chansons sont toujours là bien sûr, mais je crois que ce qui peut vous motiver c'est de venir... comprendre de quoi ça parle.

[Well, did you understand the story, 10 years ago? Because people who came out of the show used to say, 'the songs and the show are great, but we don't get the story at all.' This time -- first of all, we put on the show twice in Quebec since, in 1980 and 86, and each time we re-worked it, and now it reads like a movie. You can follow the story like a movie. The songs are still there of course, but I think what could motivate you is to come and figure out what the plot is about.]
