Somehow I had missed the fact that Mr Lawrence was French (he didn't have very many lines at first, so I didn't hear the accent). It turns out that the actor, Stephane Fichet actually is an experienced butler and his role was expanded because Guy Richie enjoyed working with him so much in eps 1 & 2.
