(He’s) Just a Phase — Part 0
Part 1
It was 1989 when they broke up.
It was quiet. It was quick. It was devastating.
Most of all, Steve knew it was all because of him. If it had been another timeline with drastically different events, Steve was sure that his apartment wouldn’t feel so cold, so empty. In another life, Steve wouldn’t have made the same mistakes, and Steve would be in an apartment that actually felt like home.
That was not a wish that Steve could dream of anymore.
Steve was stuck in an apartment that felt too much like his parents’ house in Hawkins. Nothing in the apartment was his. The apartment held no memories or no warmth. Besides the furniture, one wouldn’t believe that anyone lived there. The apartment was clean — too clean. Cleaning meant that there wouldn’t be a reminder that there used to be something, or rather someone, that caused his heart to beat out of his chest or that caused him to feel safe.
Cleaning merely helped on the surface because underneath it all, Steve knew the truth.
Eddie was gone all because Steve hadn’t been ready.
Steve, now, wasn’t sure he would ever be ready. Even if the breakup left a giant black hole in his chest, the terrifying reality of being out scared the living shit out of him, but despite the terror that courses through his veins at the thought of telling someone, Steve hadn’t been strong enough to tell those closest to them or be proud of their relationship in safe places.
There were things Steve could blame for his hesitation. He surely could blame his parents, specifically his father, but it didn't matter. Steve made Eddie a victim of his insecurities. It didn't matter how patient Eddie had been; Steve would never have been ready for what Eddie wanted.
It wasn't until October of 1993, four years after Eddie left his life, that Steve did an unspeakable act, at least in the eyes of the Party.
Steve signed on to his walkie-talkie, newly bought months prior when his old one started to fall apart, and said his goodbyes. Not forever, but for now.
Robin had tried to show up at his apartment but was met with the sight of the landlord giving a tour of an empty apartment with a door that had an engraving of ‘E+S’ in Eddie’s shaky handwriting.
No one knew where Steve had gone. He had fallen off the grid.
He, however, was just under their noses. It was easy to hide in plain sight when no one had actually seen you in a long time. Sure, phone calls occurred, but life had gone on, and being spread out across the country made it difficult to meet, especially when everyone was an adult working some sort of 9-to-5. At first, not seeing any more made dread curl in Steve’s gut, but now, it was a safety net.
It was best that no one recognized Steve Harrington because he was about to ruin himself to the world, all in order to show Eddie Munson that he loved him more than the universe itself, and he was going to do in the only way that Eddie would listen, and that was with a busted guitar from the thrift store and mediocre voice.
All that Steve had to worry about was how Eddie was going to hear him from the top. After all, just a year after their break up, Corroded Coffin made it big.

Steve as he looks at Eddie, waiting for a treat cuz his werewolf side won't let that go, so he finishes something Eddie asked him to do, an he's patiently standing in front of Eddie as he has his mouth open silently begging for a treat, Eddie now knows this look whenever Steve does something for anyone, he always begs Eddie for a treat but it's silently, so sometimes Eddie ignores it to see how long Steve will follow him until he gets a treat, these treats result into kisses, long Pats or scratches on the head, a cookie, snuggles, Steve's favorite is where he gets a kiss and a cookie, he hates that his wolf side makes him act like he needs a treat but tbh he thinks he hates it cuz he secretly likes that he always gets his treats from Eddie, so Steve's standing there following Eddie, he even whines whenever Eddie moves away, now Steve's never asked directly or spoken for a treat so when Eddie says " what's the matter boy, Timmy fell in a well " , Steve whimpers and snorts at Eddie, Eddie than reliszes as he smirks, Steve makes a confused whine as he tilts his head, Eddie says " I see you want a treat huh? " Steve nods yes frantically," then in order to get one, you need to speak pretty boy " Eddie smirks, Steve whimpers as he snorts but complys as he speaks " p-plz can I have a damn treat " Eddie tsks as he shakes his head " naughty puppys don't get treats when they use such bad words " Steve whines an snorts as he pouts " come on pretty boy use your words, be a good girl " Eddie smirks, Steve whimpers as he takes a big breath an speaks again " Can I plz have a t-treat D-Daddy " he bats his eyelashes as he looks at Eddie, to which Eddie smiles " good girl Princess, you didn't have to say Daddy but that's a plus, so you get two kisses " an gives him two kisses on the lips an a cookie, Steve smiles as he squeaks an eats the cookie, after he realizes an tries to act cool an like that didn't happen, Eddie shakes his head " if you act like you don't like it an act like it didn't happen, then no more treats, especially kisses ", Steve's jaw drops as he instantly speaks " mm no plz I like it, am goods girl " he wiggles, Eddie smiles an gives Steve a cookie an Pats on the head " good girl ", Steve smiles an instantly devours the cookie an hugs Eddie, snuggling into him, Eddie chuckles and picks Steve up an continues on their way home as Steve now gets snuggles for listening

Ohh totally the writers regressed Steve's entire development to be solely Nancy's love interest again. His other relationships suffered so much, especially the one with Dustin. He seemed so angry with being paired up with him it was so ooc. Like it's actually criminal that we got a Eddie and Dustin hug before Steve and Dustin, like wth.
Even his relationship with Robin was watered down to push for Stancy. I still stand by the fact that Robin should have been the one who jumped in first to save Steve, but then Eddie wouldn't have given his true love speech to Steve later. And Robin actually pushing Nancy to persue Steve, while being Steve's bestie and probably knowing how fucked up he was after the breakup. The writers don't see heaven for this I'm afraid. Robin needs to talk some sense into him, like please.
I'm so mad at the writers, I hope they look through fan reactions and see that 80% of the fandom doesn't want this kinda shit. Plus it's so fucking unfair to both characters. Steve got rejected twice there at the end and he was clearly hurt, if he takes her back after all the shit Nancy put him through (cheating, calling him bs and making him insecure about his intelligence) what kinda message is this for his character? Like does he really feel so insecure about himself, so worthless that he doesn't think he deserves better??? Or worse if the writers kill him off for Nancy I'm gonna commit a crime if they do that.
And Nancy deserves an arc that isn't centered around guys, let her be single and move away to persue her dream career. Nancy won't ever be the perfect woman for Steve to carry his 6 kids, she said herself in season one. I fucking hate how they ended s4 with setting up Nancy cheating on Jonathan in s5 like she did with Steve in s2. Plus most likely not even facing any repercussions for her behavior because the show excuses any mistake so idk she gets a fee pass for anything really. I tried to like her but after s2 I just can't bring myself, the only scenes where I truly started to appreciate her more were the ones with Robin tbh.
My dream dynamics or hope for s5. Steve and Robin plus party all together fighting evil monsters. We deserve Steve and El interactions, Steve comforting Dustin and Lucas. Plus for once let him actually display feelings, I want to see him grieve Max and feeling guilty for not being the protector like he thought he was. Plus the arc I hoped for s4, realizing he doesn't need romantic love, he already has a family rn and that friendships can make you just as happy. Like I really thought for vol2 he would finally move on and come to that realization but instead we got a love confession.
Nancy and Jonathan can do their investigation shit, stay far away from the group like they always do every season and talk about their feelings like mature adults they claim to be. Like the Duffers talked about s1 pairings definitely Jancy was together for 80% of the time despite Nancy dating Steve so please just go back to that lol.
Sorry this was kinda long, but every time I see Stancy content or discussions I get once again so angry at like everything. We could have so much better but nope.
Obx anon
oh my gosh! it's great to see you again obx anon! how have you been lovely?
i agree with you full-heartedly! i loved nancy in season one and (a little less bc of the steve situation) in season 2, but in season 3 i liked her again because her storylines were something other than conflicted feelings for a boy. in season one, the writers were laying the seeds for nancy and jonathan (even tho they had jonathan take pictures of her???) so they had her dating steve as a way for her to break free of the good girl in the suburbs mentality. this is seen with her losing her virginity, going to the party, shotgunning, etc. they used the relationship with steve to give her character depth and create a change within her.
then in season 2 she ruined steve which allowed for steve's character growth. this growth had the kids involved with it. steve went from king steve to momma steve and that was because of the kids. even in season 3 when he only had dustin and erica with him, he was still momma steve. then he started chucking fireworks at the mind flayer and he was momma steve saving el because he had the kids.
there was no momma steve content in season 4. it was annoyed and borderline king steve content. i hated that scene where he tried to go with nancy and he was visibly annoyed that he had to go with dustin. like i was excited for some steve and dustin content - i look forward to steve and dustin content. on top of that, there was no robin and steve.
everything with steve was so ooc in season 4. i also hate how it seems like they are trying to make the viewers hate nancy. she doesn't seem to be someone who it whishy-washy, yet, every other season she is unsure of her relationship.
but, i did read natalia agreed that robin and nancy would be a good pair and that it would be cool to see that relationship. i feel like that would also explain why nancy seems to jump between steve and jonathan. she seems to be drawn to any guy that is showing any form of affection/romantic interest to her regardless of her relationship status. so, maybe (and i am just brainstorming here), what if she doesn't have romantic feelings towards steve or jonathan? what if she feels like because they like her and she is a girl and they are boys, she should like them and date them?
but, back to canon. i was also upset that there seemed to be no resolution in the two-day jump of any of this. nancy can break up with jonathan if she wants, but steve and her better stay friends. there was also no steve/dustin dynamic. or steve/robin dynamic other than steve seeing her talking to vickie. but i think seeing this shift proves how nancy and steve wouldn't work. (a) they want two completely different things in life like you pointed out and (b) they bring out the worst in each other.
tik tok seems to love stancy and i've had to hit not interested so many times bc it keeps showing me stancy content and i hate it. i feel much better on tumblr where there are so many people who agree with me about this. also, i saw someone on here say that hopefully steve admitting he saw nancy having his six-kids for the longest time was steve's way of saying 'i am finally getting over you and moving on and being happy'. but we really won't know until season 5 comes out (which i hope isn't long from now).
and don't worry lovely! i hate stancy so much too. it fills me with rage that people cannot seem to realize how bad they are for each other. i am also mad that they ruined steve's character (slightly) in this season and i hope they don't ruin it further.

Edmond O’Brien’s movies, as evaluated by me, because someone had to do it:
A Girl, A Guy and A Gob (1941): Haven’t been able to watch more than a few clips, but 25/26-year-old Eddie is cute, and Lucille Ball’s in it, so it’s got that going for it too
Parachute Battalion (1941): Blatant recruitment propaganda for the parachute corps (pre-Pearl Harbour). Really only worth watching for handsome young Eddie
Winged Victory (1944): Another bit of propaganda (of the morale-boosting variety). It’s about what you’d expect for wartime propaganda, really.
The Killers (1946): Classic noir. Really good. Eddie’s character isn’t as complex as Ava Gardner’s or Burt Lancaster’s but his investigation ties everything together and he plays the part well
White Heat (1949): Classic noir. James Cagney is great. Eddie has a solid supporting role.
D.O.A. (1950): Another classic noir, slightly lesser-known. He plays ‘desperate’ very well.
The Admiral Was A Lady (1950): Silly, fluffy little comedy about four air corps veterans (Eddie, Richard Erdman, Steve Brodie and Johnny Sands) who put a lot of work into avoiding work.
The Turning Point (1952): Lower-tier but still pretty good noir with William Holden. Eddie has very big role (basically second lead)
The Hitch-Hiker (1953): Edmond O’Brien Needs A Hug: The Movie. Ida Lupino directed.
Julius Caesar (1953): Eddie basically disappears after they all stab Caesar (spoiler: Caesar dies). People always talk about Brando in this movie but I barely noticed him tbh.
The Bigamist (1953): Another Ida Lupino movie. Interesting, and pretty good.
Shield For Murder (1954): Has the most over-the-top hardboiled tagline ever: ‘Dame-Hungry Killer Cop Goes Berserk!’. I once said Eddie never gave a bland performance and one thing I can say for sure about this movie is that he’s not dull.
The Girl Can’t Help It (1956): I’m still not entirely sure what I watched, but I thought Eddie was really funny as the washed-up gangster.
Stopover Tokyo (1957): I keep forgetting I watched this movie because it was just so dull. Eddie doesn’t appear enough and the rest of it is lacking in tension, excitement or engaging characters.
The Last Voyage (1960): Pretty solid disaster movie that doesn’t waste any time in getting to the disaster- it opens on a note saying ‘fire in the engine room’ followed by 90 minutes of the situation getting worse and worse. A good supporting role as the ship’s engineer where he spends the whole movie getting more and more stressed.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962): He’s great in this one, playing the wonderfully-named newspaper editor Dutton Peabody. There’s a bit where he gets drunk and starts quoting Shakespeare. Apparently Eddie used to do that at parties after a few drinks.
The Longest Day (1962): Glorified cameo (one of many in this movie). He has a brief scene with Henry Fonda.
Seven Days In May (1964): Great political thriller. He plays an alcoholic Georgia senator and does it very well. No wonder he got nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
The Doomsday Flight (1966): Bomb-on-a-plane TV movie written by Rod Serling. Some say it’s good, some say it’s so-so, either way, it’s fun watching Eddie ham it up as the villain. Van Johnson’s in it, too.
The Wild Bunch (1969): I thought it was good. It’s an interesting movie- I’ve never seen a Sam Peckinpah movie before (so all I knew was that there’d be bloody violence). The whole cast is great, and Eddie’s good in his smaller supporting role.
Isn’t It Shocking? (1973): Another TV movie where he plays the villain. Mostly it focuses on Alan Alda. I didn’t think it was that great but it’s watchable. Eddie isn’t given much to do until the climax.
99 and 44/100% Dead (1974): Fucking weird-ass movie. It’s a small part but he’s a darn sight better to watch than Richard Harris who goes around in stupid glasses and a bad haircut looking like an ugly poor man’s Michael Caine. Some movie to end a 35-year movie career.
