Excerpt from this story from Mother Jones:
The North Cascades elk herd is a cluster of some 1,600 animals whose domain, like so many habitats, is riven by a highway. From 2012 to 2019, Washington state records show, at least 229 elk were killed by cars along a stretch of State Route 20 in the Skagit Valley. The situation imperils humans, too: In 2023, a motorist died after swerving around an elk into a telephone pole.   “My own nephew had an elk collision, and I’ve nearly had collisions myself over the years,” said Scott Schuyler, a member of the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe, who is also the tribe’s natural resources and cultural policy representative. “We have an obligation to protect our neighbors and ourselves and these animals.”
To many observers, the solution has long been clear: a wildlife bridge, flanked by fencing. But building such a structure would cost around $8.5 million, a daunting expense. “There didn’t seem to be any money out there on the horizon that could make this happen,” said Jennifer Sevigny, a biologist with the nearby Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians, which co-manages the elk herd.
That changed in November 2021, when Congress passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law—a package that included the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program (WCPP), a grant initiative that would distribute $350 million over five years to states, Native tribes and other entities for animal-friendly infrastructure. Although Sevigny knew the competition for grants would be fierce, she submitted a proposal for an elk bridge when the program launched in 2023. “Honestly, I didn’t think we were going to get it,” she said.
When the recipients of the first $110 million in grants were announced in December 2023, however, the Stillaguamish was among them. Once the grant agreement is finalized, the tribe will partner with the Upper Skagit to convene biologists and engineers to design the bridge, which is expected to take four years to construct.
The Skagit Valley overpass wasn’t the only tribal winner: Of the 10 Western wildlife crossing projects selected for the initial round of WCPP funding, four were Native-led. “It was really awesome to see that (experience) come to fruition,” said Shailyn Wiechman, connectivity coordinator at the Native American Fish and Wildlife Society and a member of the Chippewa-Cree Tribe of the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. But tribal-led connectivity projects on and adjacent to reservations still face obstacles—and money remains a big one.

Flying Over The Fall
flickr
Flying Over The Fall por David Blazejewski Por Flickr: On a mild early spring afternoon Amtrak GE P42DC number 97 leads on time train number 54 (the northbound Vermonter to St. Albans, VT from Washington, D.C.) across the historic stone arch bridge over the Fall River on modern day Berkshire and Eastern Railroad's (ex Pan Am) Conn River mainline which is now owned by the state of Massachusetts. This 4-arch span at Milepost 42.81 (measuredcfrom Springfield) on the former Boston and Maine Railroad Conn River mainline was designed and built in 1846 by none other than Theodore Judah who later became Chief Engineer of the Sacramento Valley Railroad and the greatest proponent of the Transcontinental Railroad. He personally lobbied Abraham Lincoln for the passage of the Pacific Railroad Act and brought together the 'Big Four' to found the Central Pacific Railroad. As Chief Engineer of the CPRR he surveyed the route along which it would be ultimately built, but he died in 1863 not living to see his dream become a reality more than 150 years ago in 1869. As for the railroad itself, it was once a major north south heavy duty mainline until it fell out of favor as a thru route by B&M successor Guilford Transportation, and for most of my lifetime was little more than a 10 mph secondary the domain of short locals headed to the few remaining customers north to White River Junction. From 1972 to 1987 Amtrak's Montrealer traversed this route until discontinued due to poor track conditions and shifted to an all Central Vermont routing from New London leaving this stretch of the Conn River main devoid of passenger trains until 2014. On August 20 of that year, the state finalized a $17 million deal to purchase the line from Pan Am, successor to the B&M and Guilford. The subsequent rebuilding of the route (including this bridge) to modern passenger train standards with a combination of federal and state money led to the return of Amtrak's Vermonter to the line, dubbed by the state as the 'Knowledge Corridor' in December 2014 with new stops added at Holyoke, Northampton, and Greenfield. Wanting to capitalize on their investment, in February 2016, Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack said that MassDOT was looking at starting a pilot commuter service as early as 2017. In June 2018, Governor Charlie Baker announced that two Amtrak New Haven to Springfield shuttle round trips would be extended to Greenfield in 2019 as a pilot program. The service began August 31, 2019 operated under the Valley Flyer moniker. It was operated on a trial basis through fall 2021 with a goal of 24,000 riders a year which has been met, and consequently the state just announced that the trains will be permanent. Alas, they travel no further than Greenfield, so for now this train and its northbound counterpart are the only daily passenger trains that cross this magnificent historic structure. ENJOIN WHAT IS RIGHT AND FORBID WHAT IS WRONG.
AMR BIL-MA’ROOF WA NAHI ‘AN-IL-MUNKAR, AND DO FULFILL YOUR COMMITMENTS.
Under the order Amr bil-Ma'roof and Nahi 'an-il-Munkar, it is my duty as a Muslim to advise all Muslim Brothers and Sisters to do GOOD and refrain from doing OTHERWISE.
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give Zakāh and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those - Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. NOBLE QUR’AN, CHAPTER (Surah a-Tawbah, 9, Verse (Ayah) 71

Death stranding(2019) is my another huge inspiration for the environment design, the game redefines post apocalyptic environment design through its beautiful finely detailed landscapes that blend the ruined highways, collapsed bridges, submerged and ruined cities due to timefall, a rain that accelerates the age of everything it touches. The environment emphasize isolation and scale, with the ruins overlooked by mountains and vast plains. My project can borrow the rusted materials and cracked structure details. the vegetation growth is also a huge inspiration for me in this game masterfully made with the Decima engine.

Bridge Engineering in India: Techniques & Challenges
Hello, students! If you’re thinking about a career in civil engineering, let’s talk about something fascinating—bridge engineering in India. It’s a field where you can help connect communities and shape the country’s infrastructure. I’ve spent some time looking into this, and I want to share what I’ve learned to guide you, with insights you can rely on.
What Makes Bridge Engineering Special?
Bridges are more than just structures—they link people, goods, and ideas. In India, they’re crucial with the country’s diverse terrain, from rivers to mountains. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) reports that over 1,500 bridges were built or upgraded between 2014 and 2023, covering more than 10,000 kilometers. These projects, like the Bogibeel Bridge in Assam, show how engineering tackles tough landscapes.
For you, this means a chance to work on projects that matter. Whether it’s a small rural bridge or a massive highway span, your skills can make a difference. It’s a field that combines creativity with practical problem-solving.
Common Techniques in Use
Engineers in India use a variety of methods to build bridges. Pre-stressed concrete is popular for its strength—think of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai, which opened in 2009 and handles heavy traffic daily. Steel bridges, like the Chenab Bridge in Jammu & Kashmir (the world’s highest rail bridge at 359 meters above the river), use lightweight materials for challenging sites. The Indian Road Congress (IRC) notes that these techniques save time and costs, with steel reducing construction periods by up to 30%.
You might also see cable-stayed designs, like the Atal Setu in Goa, which opened in 2023. These use cables to support the deck, offering stability for long spans. As a student, learning these methods through design software or site visits can give you a solid start.
Challenges to Watch For
Building bridges isn’t easy. Weather is a big factor—monsoons can delay work, and floods can damage sites. The 2019 collapse of a bridge in Bihar during heavy rain highlighted the need for better planning. Soil conditions also vary, requiring deep foundations in some areas, which can increase costs. A 2022 report from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways estimates that 15% of bridge projects face delays due to these issues.
Funding can be tricky too. While the government invests heavily—₹2.6 lakh crore in infrastructure in 2023-24—private partnerships are growing. This means you might work with companies like Larsen & Toubro, which need engineers who can adapt to tight budgets and timelines.
How You Can Prepare
To get into bridge engineering, focus on basics like structural analysis and material science. Understanding geotechnical engineering—how soil holds up—will help with foundation design. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) suggests hands-on training, like lab work or internships, to build confidence.
I’ve heard about NMIET in Bhubaneswar, a place established in 2004 with good facilities and practical learning. They’ve got labs where students work on real projects, and their 2024 placement data shows over 400 companies offering 3,500+ roles. Ranked #248 by Collegedunia for 2025 with a 3.4/5 rating on Shiksha, it’s a spot that comes to mind for solid training.
If you’re near the best private engineering colleges in Odisha, check their civil engineering programs. Look for ones with industry ties—companies like Cognizant or IBM visit some campuses. Site visits or design projects can teach you more than books ever will.
Career Opportunities Ahead
The future is promising! India plans to build 65,000 kilometers of highways by 2030, per a 2023 NITI Aayog report, needing thousands of bridges. Starting salaries range from ₹3.5-6 lakhs per year, with growth to ₹12-15 lakhs, based on Naukri.com data from 2024. You could work with government bodies like NHAI or private firms like Gammon India.
Projects like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, with over 1,000 bridges, offer chances to grow. Some engineers even move into consulting or teaching, sharing their expertise with the next generation.
Taking the First Step
Interested? Start by exploring college courses on bridge design—NPTEL offers free resources. Talk to professors about local projects; some colleges arrange visits to construction sites. If you’re considering the best private engineering colleges in Odisha, look at their placement records and lab facilities. It’s a good way to see what fits.
Don’t rush your decision—take time to learn and ask questions. A 2023 study from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur suggests early exposure to field work boosts job success by 20%. So, what do you think? Ready to build bridges that last? I’m here to help if you need more guidance!

As dusk falls in Washington on Fridays, the firings begin (Reuters) Mary Glantz was in her room at a Hampton Inn in Columbia, South Carolina, last Friday night during a trip visiting friends when her phone began pinging furiously with messages at 9:30 p.m. They were from panicked colleagues at the U.S. Institute of Peace, an independent, congressionally funded organization in Washington that had found itself in the crosshairs of billionaire Elon Musk’s cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency. DOGE employees had forced their way into the building, past protesting USIP staffers, and mass layoffs had begun. At 10:09 p.m., Glantz’s own termination notice arrived in an email telling her she was being fired, effective immediately. Most of USIP’s 300 staff were laid off that night. While thousands of workers have been fired in the overhaul throughout the work week, Friday nights have become some of the most nerve-racking times for civil servants. Mass firings have taken place on seven of the 10 Fridays that Trump has been in office since being sworn in on January 20, affecting hundreds of government workers, a Reuters review of the pattern of dismissals found. Targeting federal employees for termination late on a Friday appears designed to minimize media coverage and make it more difficult for them to get immediate legal help, because law offices and the courts are shut, said Rosa Brooks, a professor at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington.
Judge reaffirms order to return Maryland man erroneously deported to El Salvador (Politico) A federal judge is sticking by her demand that the Trump administration seek the immediate return of a Maryland man erroneously sent to El Salvador, where he is being held in “one of the most notoriously inhumane and dangerous prisons in the world.” U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis rejected the Trump administration’s entreaty to back off her Friday order, which requires the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia by Monday night. Xinis described the erroneous deportation of Abrego Garcia—who was under a 2019 court order not to be sent to El Salvador, for fear of reprisal by a violent gang—as a “grievous error” that requires his return. “Defendants seized Abrego Garcia without any lawful authority; held him in three separate domestic detention centers without legal basis; failed to present him to any immigration judge or officer; and forcibly transported him to El Salvador in direct contravention of [immigration law],” Xinis wrote in a 22-page opinion issued just after 1 a.m. Sunday morning. “Once there, U.S. officials secured his detention in a facility that, by design, deprives its detainees of adequate food, water, and shelter, fosters routine violence; and places him with his persecutors.”
At least 16 dead in flooding and tornadoes as storms slash from Texas to Ohio (AP) Another round of torrential rain and flash flooding came Saturday for parts of the South and Midwest already heavily waterlogged by days of severe storms that also spawned deadly tornadoes. Forecasters warned that rivers in some places would continue to rise for days. Day after day of heavy rains have pounded the central U.S., rapidly swelling waterways and prompting a series of flash flood emergencies in from Texas to Ohio. The National Weather Service said dozens of locations in multiple states were expected to reach what the agency calls “ major flood stage,” with extensive flooding of structures, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure possible. At least 16 weather-related deaths have been reported since the start of the storms, including 10 in Tennessee.
America’s Gen Z is getting religion (Economist) In 1972 some 90% of Americans said they were Christian, compared to a mere 5% saying they had no religious affiliation (researchers call them “the Nones”). By 2021 the Nones had swelled to 29%, a rise that was mostly consistent across lines of race, sex, income and education. On average, each successive birth cohort has been 10% less Christian than its predecessors. But new data from the Pew Research Centre shows that Gen Z is about as religious as older peers. If Americans born between 2000 and 2006—a cohort at the heart of Gen Z—followed their predecessors, about 41% would identify as Christian. Instead Pew’s data shows that 46% do. Nearly three-quarters of Gen Z reports feeling lonely. Having just emerged from a service at First Church in Cambridge, 20-year-old Julia LaGrand says that she takes comfort in the fact that while friends may come and go “people in church don’t get to reject you.” For some of this isolated generation, church offers solace.
Across Spain, tens of thousands march to protest the growing housing crisis (AP) Tens of thousands of Spaniards marched in protests held across the European country on Saturday in anger over high housing costs with no relief in sight. Government authorities said that 15,000 marched in Madrid, while organizers said 10 times that many took to the streets of the capital. In Barcelona, the city hall said 12,000 people took part in the protest, while organizers claimed over 100,000 did. The massive demonstration of social angst that is a major concern for Spain’s left-wing government and town halls was organized by housing activists and backed by Spain’s main labor unions. The housing crisis has hit particularly hard in Spain, where there is a strong tradition of home ownership and scant public housing for rent. Rents have been driven up by increased demand. Buying a home has become unaffordable for many, with market pressures and speculation driving up prices, especially in big cities and coastal areas.
Facing a government crackdown on dissent, Turkey’s protesters put aside their differences (AP) The arrest of an opposition presidential candidate last month has triggered Turkey’s largest anti-government protests in more than a decade, uniting demonstrators from different walks of life and sometimes diametrically opposed political views. It includes supporters of popular Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, and young people who see all politicians as ineffective. Protesters range from the socialist left to the ultra-nationalist right, and from university students to retirees. They are united by a sense that the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has grown increasingly authoritarian, diminishing the secular and democratic values and laws that the country was built upon. They are fueled by outrage at Imamoglu’s arrest and the government’s attempts to quell the ensuing protests.
Delivery boom draws Russians to courier jobs in search of extra cash (Reuters) Elena and Viktor’s apartment is packed with large, colourful rucksacks and the two bicycles they call their “iron horses”. They have quit their regular jobs, seeking better pay and more flexible hours to work full time as delivery couriers. Demand for couriers in Russia has surged in the last few years, fuelled partly by booming e-commerce growth in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Elena Kashayedova and Viktor Drovovoz, who started living together in 2023 soon after they started dating, battle cold, snowy winters in the Siberian city of Omsk and face the daily task of hauling their bikes up and down five flights of stairs in their apartment block. But for Kashayedova, who quit her previous job as a boiler operator in January, the financial upside of being a courier makes it well worth it. “In many regions, wages leave much to be desired and ... in courier services you can get three to four times more,” she said. “By the standards of our city, this is very good money.”
UN urges relief efforts in Myanmar as earthquake death toll rises (AP) The death toll from last week’s massive earthquake in Myanmar rose to 3,455, state media said Saturday, as U.N. agencies and foreign aid donors ramped up their emergency relief efforts. The 7.7 magnitude quake hit a wide swath of the country, causing significant damage to six regions and states including the capital Naypyitaw. The earthquake left many areas without power, telephone or cell connections and damaged roads and bridges, making the full extent of the devastation hard to assess. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing said 5,223 buildings, 1,824 schools, 2,752 Buddhist monasterial living quarters, 4,817 pagodas and temples, 167 hospitals and clinics, 169 bridges, 198 dams and 184 sections of the country’s main highway were damaged by the earthquake.
Iran’s currency falls to a record low against the dollar as tensions run high (AP) Iran ‘s rial currency traded Saturday at a record low against the U.S. dollar as the country returned to work after a long holiday, costing over 1 million rials for a single greenback as tensions between Tehran and Washington likely will push it even lower. The exchange rate had plunged to over 1 million rials during the Persian New Year, Nowruz, as currency shops closed and only informal trading took place on the streets, creating additional pressure on the market. But as traders resumed work Saturday, the rate fell even further to 1,043,000 to the dollar, signaling the new low appeared here to stay. Iran’s economy has been severely affected by international sanctions, particularly after U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers in 2018. At the time of the 2015 deal, which saw Iran drastically limit its enrichment and stockpiling of uranium in exchange for lifting of international sanctions, the rial traded at 32,000 to the dollar.
Phone footage contradicts Israel’s account in troops’ killing of 15 Palestinian medics (AP) Phone video from one of 15 Palestinian medics killed by Israeli forces last month appears to contradict Israeli claims that the medics’ vehicles did not have emergency signals on when troops opened fire on them in southern Gaza. The footage shows the Red Crescent and Civil Defense teams driving slowly with their emergency vehicles’ lights flashing, logos visible, as they pulled up to help an ambulance that had come under fire earlier. The teams do not appear to be acting unusually or in a threatening manner as three medics emerge and head toward the stricken ambulance. Their vehicles immediately come under a barrage of gunfire, which goes on for more than five minutes with brief pauses. The owner of the phone can be heard praying. Eight Red Crescent personnel, six Civil Defense workers and a U.N. staffer were killed in the shooting before dawn on March 23 by Israeli troops conducting operations in Tel al-Sultan, a district of the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Troops then bulldozed over the bodies along with their mangled vehicles, burying them in a mass grave. U.N. and rescue workers were only able to reach the site a week later to dig out the bodies.
Egypt takes aim at overpopulation by building new cities (NZZ/Switzerland) There are hardly any cars on these seven-lane roads. And among the massive, largely uniform sandstone buildings of the Egyptian ministries, only the occasional suit-wearing man scurries by. The only people here seem to be civil servants, cleaners and security personnel. Egypt’s new capital, around 60 kilometers east of Cairo, was built in the last 10 years and has already broken records. It is home to Africa’s tallest tower and the largest cathedral in the Middle East. Even an Olympic village has been built, just in case the country on the Nile winds up hosting the 2036 games. All the city lacks now are residents. Officials are bused in from Cairo every day, while the rows of near-identical apartment buildings remain unaffordable for most Egyptians. Urban planning experts argue that the construction boom is partially political, a means of legitimizing President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi’s authoritarian rule while allowing the president to provide military-controlled firms with construction contracts. Around 40 new planned cities have been built around the country during the 11 years of el-Sissi’s rule. But to date, relatively few Egyptians have proved willing or able to move to the new cities.
Rubio says US is revoking all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders (AP) Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday that the United States was revoking all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders, accusing the African nation’s government of “taking advantage of the United States.” “Every country must accept the return of its citizens in a timely manner when another country, including the United States, seeks to remove them,” Rubio said in a statement, adding that “South Sudan’s transitional government has failed to fully respect this principle.” Besides revoking visas, Rubio said the U.S. would “prevent further issuance to prevent entry into the United States by South Sudanese passport holders.” South Sudan’s political landscape is fragile and recent violence between government troops and armed opposition groups has escalated tensions.

Games Played in February 2025
some of the games I've played and/or completed this month on Xbox PC Game Pass, February 2025.
Tumblr media
"Maquette" (2021) is a narrative puzzle game about relationship, heartbreak and closure. It structures its puzzle within a maquette, a diorama of the couple's milestone points within their lives together.
Maquette's puzzle mechanics involves moving items between the dollhouse sized diorama and the life-sized version of the same world. But what happens when you bring the diorama inside of itself? It requires a little thinking outside of the box. (pun intended) Similar games I would recommend; "COCOON" (2023) and "Superliminal" (2019).
Tumblr media
"Frostpunk 2" (2024) is the sequel that divided the community, which they expected a similar game to the original micromanagement of a singular city. Instead, it expands the limited resource management gameplay and moves towards the macro management of multiple cities and social groups. Instead of building individual structures and streets, they are now done in hex-tiled district chunks, and upgrades are just placed within the district zones.
As with true Frostpunk manner, there is always going to be civil unrest regardless of what choices are made. Would you rule with an iron fist to quell the populist uprising, or try to upkeep your ideals with diplomacy and concessions?
Tumblr media
"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" (2024) I had my doubts about this game, but it surprised me and kept true to the spirit of Indiana Jones movies. It balanced the stealth, boxing and gunplay well, where the player can't just solely run and gun their way out of a sticky situation.
"The Great Circle" is far from perfect. Personally, I felt it suffers from the stealth system where it starts to feel comical like "Hitman" style. Such as luring the guards into the same room to knock them out, leading to a pile of bodies. The NPCs would eventually give up searching, allowing me to repeat the process over again. None the less, I was able to overlook the flaws and enjoy the puzzles, Indy's usual antics with the love interest, and their grand adventure around the world. Thankfully, the new Indy game managed to carve its own space with existing series such as "Tomb Raider" and "Uncharted" in the market.
Tumblr media
"Eternal Strands" (2025) is a narrative action adventure where you take down titans and harvest their body to craft weapon and magic with. It sounds a little bit like "Monster Hunter" but much less complex and much more focused on story. Its sidequest stories hit on some more heartfelt dramatic stories that most people can relate to. Whether if it is relationship problems, or depression and anxiety.
"Eternal Strands" the combat is quite refined, sticking to simple concepts. It felt like a taste of what recent "Monster Hunter" games might be if it was a casual game focused on approachability. Or what "Extinction" (2018) could have been if they were to create more gameplay than being a one-trick pony. I however hated traversal in the game. Not being able to grab onto a cliff face when jumping directly at it, slipping off your own ice bridge, or simply being flung into the void is a common occurrence. Thankfully, when I die during a run, I'm able to respawn and choose some items to keep. The game design is quite mindful of the player's time. All the crafted gear is 100% recyclable, meaning less grinding for the player. And existing materials and be upscaled into better materials.

CONCEPCIÓN HUERTA
Concepción Huerta is a mexican composer, electronic music producer and visual artist. She works in sound design, installations and immersive experiences exploring the relationship between silence and noise, political space and the sound body as a form of expression.
She carries out these investigations with field recordings of everyday objects (Foleys) and synthesizers that are reproduced and manipulated in an artisanal way with tape recorders and tapes to create diverse atmospheres based on ambient sounds and noise. Generating soundscapes far removed from any label they represent and taking us on a journey of imagined narratives.
Concepción Huerta explores sound at its most elemental level and investigates how it can be translated by building technological bridges between analog and digital processes.
Member of the experimental ensemble Amor Muere with Gibrana Cervantes, Camile Mandoki and Mabe Fratti. She collaborates with artists such as the Spanish composer Hara Alonso (also present at SMN – artist agency) with live performances; Towards the melancholy of a future.
The Earth Has Memory (2024) is her latest album released to date.
They have played in international venues and festivals touring America, Europe and Asia: VOLTA, Umbral, Mutek 2019 and 2022, Rewire, Cafe Otto, Fylkingen, VIDEOEX, etc.
Tumblr media
PROJECT
She presents herself as a solo live show of her latest released albums (a new work will be released in spring 2025) and as a duo with Hara Alonso.
Towards the melancholy of the future.
The sound material created by Concepción Huerta and Hara Alonso arises from the meeting place that happens when care and spiritual repair come together. These soundscapes lead us to the artists' radical openness to current political and emotional catastrophes and to their deep commitment to listening, which little by little becomes a healing practice. Listening as the creation of mental and psychic space, opening portals of time and contemplation to see our humanity in all its complexity.
How can we listen to collective pain, how can we move forward and find hope when there are so many open violent wounds? These sounds simultaneously express our deep frustration and helplessness, and a desire to deconstruct the social and political forces we are bound to in the current hyper-capitalist war machine, in the invisible architectures of oppressive power structures and the echo chambers created by news and media amidst ideological wars and ontological limbo. How can we find spaces of healing when we are drowning in pain? Can melancholy awaken us? Will the artist become extinct like other animal species? These sonic paths lead us into the unpredictability of a speculative future asking us to stay together, to unite so we can fight with the spirit, with a peripheral gaze and with the roar of nostalgia.

Towards the melancholy of the future.

Will 2025 Be A “Rebound” Year For Luxury Brands - Skywire London
Tumblr media
It might be best said quietly, but after a tough few years for the high-end sector, tentative signs are arguably emerging that the coming year could be a positive one for growth.
This much was put forward by a recent City AM report, which cited analysts as predicting sector-wide revenue growth of five to six per cent during 2025.
Such relative optimism appears to be based on the judgement that opportunities in the United States and China are “not getting any worse”.
In the words of analysts at RBC, Piral Dadhania and Richard Chamberlain, “while luxury has generally been a tough sector” since the second half of 2023, “the setup is improving”.
However, many luxury brand decision-makers seem wary of the dangers of adopting an overly upbeat stance.
When McKinsey surveyed fashion leaders, only a fifth (20%) of them said they anticipated customer sentiment would be on the rise in 2025. Indeed, about four in 10 (39%) respondents signalled an expectation that industry conditions would deteriorate.
Considerable uncertainty remains for luxury brands, as customer demographics shift
There is evidence of major structural changes taking hold in the high-end market, amid a high level of uncertainty. Such factors probably help to explain why fashion leaders are hesitant to express much optimism, at least for now.
City AM reported that the “least surprising” of these changes was the industry moving away from its traditional “centre of gravity”, China, as a consequence of low demand in this part of the world. This is allowing for alternative Asian markets, such as Japan, India, and Korea, to benefit.
However, the business-focused newspaper also highlighted the evolving customer base for luxury brands. The outlet suggested that younger generations appeared to be reducing their expenditure on luxury items in favour of second-hand goods, in addition to drifting away from “old-school” brands, instead taking an interest in smaller and more individual purchases.
Exacerbating this, according to Third Bridge analyst Yanmei Tang, has been the “homogenisation of luxury brands” as a result of a frequent turnover of designers. She said this had left customers “struggling to distinguish one label from another”.
We may be in times of change, but new opportunities are also emerging
With aspirational customers having also been alienated by ever-higher prices, it perhaps shouldn’t be a great surprise that in recent years, many people have been pulled away from luxury markets.
Indeed, Bain has drawn attention to approximately 50 million people having been lost from the luxury customer base during 2024 – amounting to roughly 12.5 per cent. This, the management consulting firm observed, was the first such decline in a decade.
On the surface, that might not exactly seem heartening news for the world’s premium brands. However, there is evidence of the remaining customers spending higher amounts of money on luxury items.
While, according to RBC, the average spend per consumer was £593 in 2019, this metric went up to £842 in 2024. Furthermore, almost half of purchases last year were made by high-net-worth clients, compared to less than a third in 2019.
North America, too, looks likely to present intriguing opportunities for high-end brands during the coming year. This region already accounts for roughly a quarter of luxury demand, and if wealthy Americans are boosted by Donald Trump’s second presidential term – as has been predicted – this share may well increase further.
Make sure you partner with proven and luxury-focused digital marketing professionals
Amid the unpredictability and uncertainty that 2025 is likely to bring, as a decision-maker for your own high-end brand, you will want to ensure you have the right strategic, creative, and technological experts by your side.
The skilled and seasoned professionals who make up our luxury digital marketing consultancyat Skywire London can very much serve as those experts.
To find out more about how we can support the fulfilment of your premium, fashion, or lifestyle brand’s growth objectives throughout 2025 and beyond, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

BuzzFeedTrends Explains: Why These Viral Topics Are Capturing Global Attention
In the age of social media, where news travels at lightning speed, viral topics and trends dominate our digital landscape. From memes to political movements, the global attention these trends capture can spark conversations across continents. One platform that plays a significant role in identifying and analyzing viral content is BuzzFeedTrends. With its finger on the pulse of internet culture, BuzzFeedTrends delves into why certain topics go viral and what makes them so universally appealing.
The Power of Memes and Internet Humor
One of the primary catalysts for viral trends is the internet meme. These bite-sized pieces of content, often filled with humor, relatable moments, or absurdity, are designed to be easily shareable. BuzzFeedTrends explains that memes are powerful because they bridge cultural divides. A well-crafted meme can resonate with people across different countries, races, and languages. Memes often represent shared experiences, whether it’s a reaction to a global event or a funny observation about everyday life.
For example, the "Woman Yelling at a Cat" meme, which combines an image of a woman shouting with a confused cat sitting at a table, went viral in 2019. Its simplicity and versatility made it relatable to millions. Users adapted it to various situations, giving it new life in different contexts. This adaptability is a key reason why memes go viral – they can take on new meanings and remain relevant for extended periods.
Social Media as a Launchpad for Viral Topics
BuzzFeedTrends points out that social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok are critical in propelling trends into the global spotlight. The algorithms behind these platforms are designed to amplify content that garners attention quickly, whether through likes, shares, or comments. This creates a feedback loop where viral topics get even more visibility the more they’re shared.
TikTok, in particular, has become a breeding ground for viral challenges, dances, and trends. BuzzFeedTrends highlights how the "Savage Love" dance challenge took over the app in 2020. As more users joined in, the challenge became a global phenomenon. TikTok's unique structure encourages viral content creation, as its format allows anyone to contribute, resulting in a collective sense of participation that transcends geographic and cultural boundaries.
The Role of Influencers and Celebrities
Influencers and celebrities play a pivotal role in shaping viral trends. BuzzFeedTrends discusses how famous personalities have the power to launch a trend into the global consciousness simply by sharing it with their followers. A tweet from a celebrity or a viral TikTok video from an influencer can skyrocket an obscure topic to viral status.
For example, when Elon Musk tweeted about the cryptocurrency Dogecoin in 2021, the digital currency saw a massive surge in value. Musk's tweet amplified the conversation around Dogecoin, sparking widespread interest and media coverage. Similarly, TikTok stars like Charli D’Amelio have a large enough following that their content can drive massive trends, from dance moves to fashion styles.
Political and Social Movements Going Viral
Viral topics aren’t always lighthearted or humorous. BuzzFeedTrends highlights the role of social media in sparking political and social movements. The Black Lives Matter movement, for example, gained worldwide momentum after the viral spread of videos showing police brutality. Social media platforms provided a space for collective organizing, raising awareness, and mobilizing protests.
Another example is the #MeToo movement, which went viral in 2017 after actress Alyssa Milano encouraged women to share their experiences with sexual harassment. The hashtag quickly spread globally, leading to real-world change in industries ranging from entertainment to politics. The viral spread of these movements shows how digital platforms can serve as powerful tools for advocacy, rallying people behind causes and sparking meaningful conversations.
The Impact of Global Events and Crises
Global events and crises often dominate the viral landscape, with news breaking and spreading quickly across social platforms. The COVID-19 pandemic is a prime example of how a global event can lead to widespread viral content. Memes, news updates, and personal stories about life during the pandemic took over social media, while people turned to online communities for support and humor during uncertain times.
In times of crisis, viral topics often serve as an outlet for collective grief, resilience, and solidarity. BuzzFeedTrends notes that viral trends that emerge from such events often reflect the ways in which people seek connection and understanding during periods of widespread uncertainty.
The Science Behind Virality
BuzzFeedTrends explores the psychology behind why certain topics go viral. One of the key elements is emotional engagement. Content that evokes strong emotional reactions—whether humor, anger, or inspiration—is more likely to be shared. This emotional connection creates a sense of urgency, driving people to engage with and share the content with their networks.
The use of familiar symbols, nostalgia, or popular culture references also contributes to the virality of certain topics. These elements tap into shared cultural knowledge, making the content immediately recognizable and easy to digest. People are naturally drawn to content that aligns with their experiences or interests, making viral topics more likely to spread through word of mouth.
Conclusion
BuzzFeedTrends offers valuable insights into why certain topics capture global attention. Whether it’s a funny meme, a social movement, or a viral challenge, these topics have the power to connect people across the globe. In an increasingly digital world, the ability to go viral has become an influential force that shapes the cultural zeitgeist, often in unexpected ways. By understanding the mechanics behind viral topics, we can better appreciate how our digital behavior shapes the way trends unfold.

Why Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry is Essential for a Perfect Smile?
Cosmetic and restorative dentistry is becoming more important and essential as people realise that these procedures not only make one beautiful but also make certain tasks like eating, talking, etc easier and more comfortable. When it comes to treatments and procedures there is significant overlap between cosmetic and restorative and preventative dentistry. In restorative dentistry, the damaged portion of teeth is corrected to ensure better functionality and also strength and appearance of teeth are improved.

A Look at Some Restorative Dentistry and Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures
Teeth whitening dental care is a cosmetic dental procedure and it can solve discolouration of the teeth. The natural brightness of teeth is restored with this process and teeth discolouration can be due to factors such as aging, dietary choices, smoking, and certain medications. To correct stained or yellowed teeth in-chair treatments or take-home kits are effective methods and dentists can choose the right method.
Dental bridge treatment is a restorative dental appliance designed to replace one or more missing teeth and hence the functionality and aesthetics of teeth are improved. These custom-made structures consist of crowns that anchor to adjacent teeth, securely holding artificial teeth in place to fill gaps. Dental bridges help restore the natural alignment of teeth and also with this treatment, there is no further shifting of remaining teeth. They also contribute to maintaining facial structure by supporting the cheeks and lips.
Teeth bonding is used to address issues like chips, discolouration, and small gaps between teeth by applying a tooth-coloured composite resin to the affected area. This is shaped to match the natural teeth, and hardening it with UV light for a seamless finish. Bonding is a cost-effective alternative to veneers and crowns, and the reason being that it requires minimal alteration to the existing tooth structure.
Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells that can cover the front surface of teeth and with it, the appearance issues such as staining, gaps, or minor misalignments in teeth can be corrected. Available in two types—porcelain and composite—veneers enhance the colour, shape, and size of teeth.
