Study Abroad Applications
February is the month of study abroad application deadlines for the next year, so here's a look into the application process!

Choosing a Program
Figure out what you want out of a study abroad experience, whether you want a language intensive program, to go to a certain place, or to further your major. Then, look into programs that fit your requirements. You can check the study abroad website here to look for programs Smith offers and approves, but you can also look outside these offerings, though you will have to petition to get approved if you do choose something outside of Smith. This can be overwhelming, but there is a study abroad fair at the beginning of the year and the Lewis Global Center has open hours in which they are happy to help in any way.
Applying
If you are applying to a non-Smith approved program or if you want to go to multiple locations (2 places, one semester each), or if you need to do a grade petition, that is an additional process. For the non-Smith approved programs, in particular, you must first get permission from Smith first before applying to the actual program. Lastly, if you need financial support, you will need to talk to the appropriate offices and apply for assistance.
All of this aside, what I will talk about is the standard process for applying to a Smith approved program as I have, at this point, applied to three (Geneva for a year, Paris for a year, and Ewha for a summer).
Most Smith-run study abroad programs have an information session during lunch to go over the program, the application process, and student accounts of their experiences. This is your first step.
After making sure you are informed about the program you are applying to, you go to the study abroad application portal, SITES.
After logging in, you will search for the program you are interested and click to start the application process. Note: You only do this once, as doing it multiple times results in multiple applications.
Each application has different requirements, but this is what the Paris and Geneva ones looked like: (the Ewha application was missing the latter three requirements)
-General Info: what program, passport info, petitions, etc.
-Short essay about why you want to participate in this program, personal and academic reasons. If you have taken more than one year of French, this has to be in French. Make sure to put a lot of thought into this portion.
-Letters of Recommendation: Two, one for academic and one for language proficiency. In other words, one professor to prove your aptitude in French and any other professor you feel like you've made a connection with and knows you.
-Plan of Study: You need to fill out a form detailing the classes you've taken, the grades you've gotten in those classes, and whether or not they were for your major. In addition, you need to fill out a prediction of what classes you will take for the rest of your time at Smith, both abroad (this will require research) and when you come back. This is to ensure that you can finish your minimum credits to graduate as well as your major. For each major, you will need to fill out a separate form.
-Signatures: You need your major advisor and your major department advisor for study abroad to sign off on your plan of study. If you are a double major, this can mean four or more signatures as you need a separate form for each major. Start this early, because it can take a while to track everyone down and you do not want to be the person panicking on the day the application is due.
Final thoughts
Studying abroad is an amazing experience and one that everyone who goes loves to look back on and everyone who doesn't go wishes they did. It's admittedly a daunting process, which is why you should seriously consider your options and motivations before starting. However, if you do go ahead and decide to study abroad, be inspired by the words of Michelle Obama, "The benefits of studying abroad are almost endless."
