Since 1991, the Ensemble has mesmerized audiences using the rhythms and grooves of North India to collaborate with music and dance from around the world. TTE follows this blueprint with its modern, high-energy approach. TTE’s repertoire has brought audiences to the edge of their seats by showcasing the complexity of pure traditional tabla augmented by South Indian percussion, Japanese taiko, and kathak dance to create a high energy stage presence. Founded by tabla master Ritesh Das, Toronto Tabla Ensemble has performed to sold-out audiences across Canada, USA, Australia and India. They were nominated for a JUNO Award for their album Firedance and their compositions have been licensed for commercials, films, and as the theme music for CBC Radio’s daily Metro Morning

Toronto Tabla Ensemble presents ‘Raghupati’ a new single and music video. Ritesh Das, Founder and Artistic Director of the Ensemble reimagines a landscape of harmony, peace and unity. This song has great significance for Indians bringing sentiment to the unity encouraged by Mahatma Gandhi during the challenges of colonization during the 24 day long Salt March in 1930. This song is revived by the Ensemble bringing a new positive energy to the composition.   The track presents a synchronized collaboration with powerful vibrations of footwork from Kathak Dance, a compelling foundation of tabla percussion, resonating vocals, and the beginnings of melodic sarod instrument accompanied by the flute.

About TTYE
Our goal at the Toronto Tabla Youth Ensemble (TTYE) is to transform the common tabla student into an elite tabla player. Thus for a  player to be eligible for the Youth Ensemble they must be hand-picked by none other than our teacher, Ritesh Das who evaluates each student. When the TTYE comes together, we experience intense practice and rehearsal, at the same time enjoying what we do. Students in the ensemble enjoy playing because they practice hard and their effort shows during the ensemble’s performances. One of the key factors that keeps us together is motivating each other as team players.
The TTYE made their debut in November 2017 at the Harbourfront Centre during sold out show ‘Parampara’ featuring musicians and artists from Toronto and San Francisco.
Since then they recorded their first audio track along with a music video shot on a boat, appropriately titled ‘Sailing’, released January 2018.  They have performed at numerous community outreach events, and fundraisers around Ontario as well as the Royal Ontario Museum. Currently they are working on recording their next single and music video to be released October 2018.

Training tabla players: The six year tabla program consists of rigorous training in theoretical and practical aspects of the Hindustani classical art of tabla. The courses are overseen by academic director of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, Ritesh Das, and require completion of yearly examinations. The exams test practical and theoretical aspects of tabla playing along with the historical and cultural background necessary to gain an understanding of the art form. Completion of the six year program ensures a comprehensive grasp of professional tabla solo and accompaniment repertoire. Graduation from the program requires the student perform an hour-long tabla solo followed by accompaniment of a featured musician or dancer of the Hindustani tradition. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the two year graduate course offered by the Toronto Tabla Ensemble in arts administration and concert presentation. Training professional artists: Students who complete the six year tabla program are eligible to receive two more years of training as professional artists. While continuing advanced studies in tabla under Ritesh Das, the student also focuses on obtaining skills in arts administration and arts presentation. The advanced tabla study consists of further repertoire as well as experience in teaching tabla classes, accompanying classical music and dance, and composing. No experience necessary, have fun learning rhythm, dance, culture and much more!
