Joshua Massad & Dylan Aycock - Two Improvisations
More stunning Takoma School ragas from Joshua Massad and Dylan Aycock, whose self-titled 2020 cassette has been in constant rotation over the past few years. This one is the duo's vinyl debut — and as the title tells us, we're invited to luxuriate in two long improvs, both stretching well beyond the 15-minute mark. Despite that open-ended approach, things never feel aimless or meandering. Massad (on tabla and sitar) and Aycock (on 12-string acoustic) manage to be both fully locked in and totally zoned out — floating into the outer regions, but always with purpose and a sense of direction. Highly recommended!

Inception 30 day challenge 2024
Day 30: If the characters were all in a band, what instruments/roles would they play?
@inception30daychallenge
eastern/classical band version
yusuf - tabla : he’s got THE look for the position. trust me. And also I believe he’s the one who had the best table top drum beating talent during school. The chemistry instrument.
eames - Sitar : the one instrument which adds colour of the sound and emotion to the whole thing. the most eye-catchy instrument as well! add a flute to it and it’s heaven
arthur - flute : the instrument which decides whether the rest of the band is gonna get a standing ovation or rotten eggs thrown at them. sweet and precise. creates magic with the sitar.
cobb - serpina/harmonium : brings out the best of each instrument and sells the audience what a good performance the band is giving. needs to be crazily talented to wield this.
Mal - tambourine - the shrill sound of it commands attention and respect and the rhythm and suaveness of the instrument is unparalleled. it’s lovely.
ariadne - xylophone- the cherry on top. makes the whole band complete and can adopt to any song the band wishes to play. beautiful and efficient.
saito - taiko - adds richness. looks scary and is scary and you need to have a lot of strength to create music but it’s worth it.

Happy birthday to Dhani Harrison! (Photo by David M. Benett.)
“When your parents are cool hippies, the only way to rebel is to get straight A’s, do sports and enroll in a military school. That’s what I did.” - Dhani Harrison, New York Post, February 17, 2009
“Seeing how amazing, sweet and talented Dhani is, and how cool and amazing Olivia is — you can tell a lot about a person by who their friends are and who they love. […] They’re such incredible people, and they love him so much, and you can see how much he loved them. I love his art, his gardens and his home, and all the incredible things he’s written, but I think my favorite moment of George’s is Dhani and Olivia." - Regina Spektor, Filter, Fall 2011
“Shortly after Dhani was born Ravi and Alla Rakha took the train over to visit us [George, Olivia and Dhani], and I picked them up at Reading. They came over to see the baby, and Ravi wrote a tune called ‘Dhani.’ The name 'Dhani’ actually came from my study of Indian music: from the scale of Sa-Ri-Ga-Ma-Pa-DHA-NI-Sa. So he wrote this song, and Alla Rahka played on one half of the tabla, the bayan.” - George Harrison, Raga Mala (1997)
“Of course one of my favorites on there [Gone Troppo] is ‘Unknown Delight.’ He was saying, ‘What should I write about? What should I write a song about?’ I said, ‘Write a song about Dhani,’ and he wrote this beautiful song which was very prescient actually.” - Olivia Harrison, Dark Horse Radio, 2018
“‘Jerry Moss [A&M co-founder] put my mom on the Dark Horse project because she was the only person cool enough there,’ adds Dhani. ‘She was a meditator, and they figured she would get on with my dad real well, which evidently she did.’ The two were married in 1978, the year Dhani was born: ‘I was one of their early releases,’ he says drolly.)” - Rolling Stone, March 9, 2020
“I didn’t really learn to play from my dad, I learned to play with my dad. He never really taught me anything but the 12-bar and the fundamental chords; we just played a lot together.” - Dhani Harrison, Filter, Fall 2011
“[Dhani] fondly recalled how the two would often sit together at home, strumming their acoustic guitars, as they played vintage blues songs by Leadbelly, Robert Johnson and J.B. Lenoir.” - Pop Talk, creators dot com
“‘George never held anything back, even when Dhani was really young, so they were very close, and Dhani had a clear understanding. Some of the things George told him, it was almost like he knew he might not be around later on, so he had to tell him then. ‘So yes, it’s difficult to make your own way, but that’s what it was, and Dhani loved that guy, they were very close.’ Olivia could equally be talking about herself.” - Huffington Post, September 24, 2014 (x)

Yk, like sometimes, the greatest fault parents do? Think that "yes only i can know the best for my child." While abusing and neglecting and overwhelming them INSTEAD.
Like today was my PTM, and ibgot low marks because of favoritism of teachers with class toppers and because of my stress.
My parents have the greatest hand in my stressed depressed self. They have put me through SOO MANY classes, just because their frnds were like " oH mY cHiLd DoEs ThEsE tHiNgS! hE's ReAlLy TaLeNtEd!" Like to match with the other kids, my parents put me through hell!
I am indian. So we have many types of dances. And all these dances are taught at my dance school. So i do many things at once:
Dances [yes cuz there are too many]
Tabla
Harmonium [vocal and many types of songs like classical and rabindra sangeet]
Cricket
Table tennis 🏓
Swimming
Drawing and art
Tuition: Maths and Science
Tuition: Language and Ssc
And then comes school! There aremany programs of school. And i had went up to even NATIONAL level of AFS EAC SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP and came 4th in TT 🏓 and my parents are still NOT satisfied.
It's overwhelming me a LOT. And my parents are like:
"But we couldn't do it before so we are making you do them!"
"But it's good for you!"
"Shut up with you stress-talks! There is nothing called stress!"
"How can you be so stressed? You are so young."
"You have no problem with yourself you don't need therapy"
LIKE I NEED THERAPY I HAVE ATTEMPTED SUICIDE FOR THIS 7 TIMES AT GRADE 8!! I DEVELOPED DEPRESSION AND MENTAL ILLNESS AT A YOUNG AGE OF 9! I HAD CUT MY ARMS AT THE AGE OF 11 AND 12, JUST FOR THESE.
AND PARENTS EVEN BEAT AND SCOLD AND NEGLECT THEIR CHILDREN WHEN THEY DON'T GO THE WAY THEY WANT TO!
And then comes school. Fake frnds. Education stress. Pressure. Feels like hell and jail. Grades. And so many other things!
TO HELL WITH THESE!

Heyy! I'm curious about your musical career, so here are a couple of questions if you don't mind:
Do you play any instruments other than drums?? And do you play in a band or you sing too and are a solo??
that's kind of you, thanks! and sorry for the slow reply! this got buried in my drafts.
i'm an orchestral percussionist. fave instrument is timpani, hence the avatar. i play all percussion instruments you'd find in orchestra or wind ensemble, big and small, and i also play drum set of course and have taken tabla lessons but don't consider myself a tabla player.
i'm a music teacher, and coming with that territory is the ability to play "every" instrument just a little bit. by every i mean, standard instruments you'd find in an elementary school classroom or in a high school band. so i also play piano, acoustic guitar, flute, clarinet, trumpet, baritone, trombone, violin, and cello. i do NOT consider my strings skills to be worth anything at all, i can just play the instruments well enough to teach a kid how from scratch. i'm better at brass than woodwinds.
basically i'm better than a 10 year old and better than most middle schoolers at all the things except strings, strings i consider myself a beginner. but there's a lot to be said for having the ability to understand all the instruments, how they work... that knowledge helps a lot so often times beginner-level doesn't appear to be beginner... oh yeah i guess i can play recorder and ukulele too. i can repair all these instruments and more if i needed to. ah and i'm a decent piano and guitar player i guess. can perform on those, but i'm very definitely a percussionist.
as to singing, i didn't really start singing until i started teaching. i get lots of compliments so i guess i'm good at it. i could definitely benefit from some professional training and not the one beginning voice class i had in college, lol.
i don't perform vocally... i sing for work, that's about it. and whatever you see me messing around with here on tumblr, which is just recording into my phone lol. i tend to only perform with orchestras and wind ensembles playing percussion, but for work again i've had to play all of the things in front of people. i've been on concert tour in england with a professional wind ensemble, that was fun.
this was very rambly aahhh i hope i answered your question! thank you very much for the interest!

In that Breath - Spiritual Lyrics as Gateway to the Divine from Kabul’s Kharabat
در آن نفس
In that Breath
Two captivating renditions of a composition by the revered استاد محمد هاشم چشتی Ustad Mohammad Hashim Chishti (1944-94) featuring lyrics by the master poet of the ages, سعدی Saadi, vividly showcase the distinct and intriguing musical traditions of کابل Kabul and هرات Herat.
These performances, by two celebrated vocalists, استاد مهوش Ustad Mahwash and استاد جلیل احمد دل‌آهنگ Ustad Jalil Del Ahang, present a rare and precious chance to delve into the unified artistic expression born from the rich cultural heritage of Kabul’s خرابات Kharabat musician quarter.
The Poem by Saadi  سعدی
In that breath when I pass, may I be yearning for you
بدان امید دهم جان که خاک کوی تو باشم
I give up my life with the hope of becoming the dust of your alley
حدیث روضه نگویم گل بهشت نبویم
I will not speak of the gardens of paradise nor smell the flowers of heaven
جمال حور نجویم دوان بسوی تو باشم
I will not desire the beauty of the houris but steer towards you
Translated from the Farsi by فرهاد آزاد Farhad Azad with edits by پروین پژواک Parween Pazhwak
استاد مهوش Ustad Mahwash's Version Liner Notes
This song In that Breath was composed by Ustad Mohammad Hashim Chishti (1944-94).
This recording by Ustad Mahwash was released in 2007 by the Accords-Croises label based in فرانسه France. She was the first woman to have been conferred the honorary title of "Ustad" in 1977 in Kabul by the Ministry of Culture.
Spiritual Lyrics as Gateway to the Divine from Kabul’s Kharabat
By Farhad Azad
The lyrics embody صوفی Sufi ideals, expressing fervent longing for the beloved, rejecting worldly pleasures in favor of divine love, seeking annihilation of the self in union with the Divine, and using the beloved as a symbol for the ultimate reality.
In Kharabat, where the songs held deep spiritual significance, استادان masters or ustads would often require their students to perform an ablution وضو (wuzu), before singing. This ritual purification emphasized the sacred nature of the poetry and music, ensuring the singers approached their performance with reverence and spiritual readiness.
Reflecting on her musical journey in the CD’s liner notes, Ustad Mahwash says “I am a follower of the sufi path and our Master Mohammad Chishti who encouraged devotion through the practice of 'mystical audition' or سماع Sama. I sing everything that relates to love.”
Ustad Del Ahang's Version Liner Notes
This استاد جلیل احمد دل‌آهنگ Ustad Jalil Ahmad Del Ahang’s (1961-2018) rendition of در آن نفس (In that Breath) is a moving example of the Kharabati school of music, honed under the tutelage of استاد سرآهنگ Ustad Sarahang (1924-83) and later استاد موسی قاسمی Ustad Musa Qasemi (1936-95).
From Kabul to Herat: The Journey of Kharabat’s Spiritual Music
By Farhad Azad
The music of کابل Kabul’s خرابات Kharabat district, a cultural gem, embarked on a poignant journey to هرات Herat as early as the 1930s. This migration was not merely a physical movement of aspiring artists to Kabul to study under the masters, but a profound cultural exchange that shaped the musical landscape of Herat, carrying with it the emotions and aspirations of a community.
Tumblr media
This استاد جلیل احمد دل‌آهنگ Ustad Jalil Ahmad Del Ahang’s (1961-2018) rendition of در آن نفس (In that Breath) is a profoundly moving example of the Kharabati school of music, a testament to the emotional depth and beauty that can be achieved through music. His soulful interpretation, filled with longing and devotion, resonates with the spiritual essence of the Chishti Sufi order, inviting the listener on a journey of self-discovery and transcendence.
Exiled in ایران Iran in 1998, Ustad Jalil Ahmad Del Ahang captured the haunting performance, accompanied by استاد رحیم خوشنواز Ustad Rahim Khushnawaz (1943-2010) on robab, عظیم حسن‌پور Azim Hassanpour on tabla, and غلام سخی رسولی Ghulam Sakhi Rasouli on dutar.
The reverend musician and composer استاد محمد هاشم چشتی Ustad Mohammad Hashim Chishti (1944-94) traced his lineage to the چشتی Chishti Sufi order a spiritual tradition established in the 900s AD by ابو اسحاق شامی Abu Ishaq Shami in the town of چشت Chisht, located in present-day Herat province افغانستان Afghanistan. The Chishti Sufi order, with its emphasis on music as a spiritual practice, played a pivotal role in developing and preserving the Kharabati school of music, infusing it with spiritual depth and significance.
Tumblr media
The Chishti practice, renowned for its profound emphasis on سماع Sama, a devotional practice of evoking the divine presence through music and poetry, is not just a performance, but a transformative spiritual journey. This unique aspect of the Chishti practice adds a layer of depth and richness to the music, elevating it beyond mere entertainment to a profound spiritual experience that resonates with the soul.
The unique lineage of this صوفی Sufi musical tradition is a testament to the enduring power of cultural exchange and the fluidity of art and culture. Born in the heart of Herat, the Chishti Sufi order’s musical essence found its way to Kabul through the descendants of Ustad Hashim Chishti.
His descendants, invited from هند مرکزی central India by امیر شیرعلی خان Amir Sher Ali Khan, the ruler of کابلستان Kabulistan in the 1870s, played a crucial role in carrying forward the musical tradition, demonstrating the enduring power of cultural exchange and the fluidity of art and culture, and the importance of preserving such cultural practices.
The poet لیلا صراحت روشنی Layla Sarhat Rushani (1958-2004) aptly observed that artistic works with “simplicity in the expression” are akin to  “a stream of pure, clear water, and clear waters often make their depths appear shallower than they actually are.”
While seemingly lovely and simple on the surface, these two renditions of Ustad Hashim’s composition carry a profound depth—a millennia-long journey of verse and melody passed down through generations, traversing vast distances before returning to their ancestral home. The music, a testament to the interconnectedness of human expression, transcends geographical boundaries and historical epochs, resonating with listeners across time and space.

If all of the Reds and Blues and Freelancers played instruments, what do you think they'd all play? All I can think of is Doc/O'Malley on violin (probably gets really into it like Devil Went Down To Georgia), Sarge on trumpet (cuz bugles but can actually play it nice too), Florida on ukulele, and Maine and Locus taking up classic guitar and cello respectively for therapeutic reasons and ending up getting really into it.
Those all sound really good!
Hmm... it depends on what kind of music they're going for. I think in general, most of them haven't had the chance to really practice much music, but in season 15, we saw some of them formed a band! Carolina sings (so good), and it looked like Grif and Tucker were both on guitar, while Caboose did drums (if I remember right).
Sarge is certainly musically inclined, in regards to how much he likes to make up songs about killing stuff he doesn't like. I'm gonna say he knows how to play guitar, generally classic-rock/folk/country with what he does, but he surprises people by listening to wide range of musical genres (he's got a big collection that includes heavy metal and hip-hop). Oh, and he rocks on the harmonica!
Grif is good with guitar, and he'd probably be good on drums as well, but I'd like to think he secretly hides a gift with piano. Like, he can just naturally do really amazing/complicated pieces with ease (but when he was younger, little jerks he went to school with called that "sissy music", so he was awkward about sharing it with anybody). He's good with a uke too, and a very nice singer (again, if he's not feeling embarrassed)
Simmons WISHES he could play something like the violin or cello... but he just doesn't have rhythm, and gets too frustrated to practice properly. He doesn't have a bad voice, but he's a nervous mess if he tries to sing in front of people. He's able to get decent on the piano (with some help from Grif), and since he's a tech guy, he finds his own niche with electric keyboards (nothing too extravagant, but still very good)
Carolina is the one who had fancy music lessons when she was younger, but she's out of practice (she used to be good on clarinet and violin). She gets back into music and singing, picking up some guitar and piano... but surprises everybody by randomly deciding to get REALLY good at the harp (just to show off, haha)
Doc and O'Malley would certainly learn to play violin and fiddle, but I think they'd also practice different kinds of unique instruments; the kalimba, the tabla, the veena, the dholak, the balafon, and various types of flutes (they both also know how to make small little instruments with woodcraft; various things that Doc knows from his own traditions and heritage). They also are very good singers, Doc being especially into acapella/using voices to simulate instruments (though, O'Malley tends to ham it up for "villain" songs~)
Kai is more into mixing music, creating beats, maybe making something new with samples, and she is a killer DJ (dance music, electronica, techno remixes, and all similar variations. she's pretty good at changing up the "tone" of a song, but still keeping the melody strong)
Church is kinda-sorta good at a few things, but nothing he's invested in/practices often. However, he's pretty good at writing songs when he can focus on it (the Fragments all help, and they have a variety of musical genres they are into)
Tex is also OK with certain instruments, but not especially passionate to play anything often (she can sing though, but is the opposite of Carolina, who tends to lean toward more energetic songs. Tex will sing lower and slower)
Wash learned how to play the recorder in middle school. He can also play a kazoo, and can shake a tambourine on the beat. That's about it... with some help, he's OK on drums (he likes to back-up sing/harmonize with other people rather than sing solo)
Caboose is good on drums, he can put all his energy into making a strong rhythm! He's also good on various horns/brass and woodwinds, and really vibes with free-form jazz
Donut gets more caught-up with performing, he loves two come up with songs, sing and dance. He mostly likes pop-rock, but gets into other genres occasionally (he knows how to play the melodica very well). His big dream is to write a bunch of musicals~
Tucker is very good at different kinds of guitar, and he's a great singer as well (he didn't think he'd be into it, but just for practice, he tries out some classical/opera, and he's actually VERY impressive, he can project his voice very well and change the tone/pitch easily, and so he plays around merging old-school stuff with newer themes of music)
Locus hasn't had time for music in years... but he learned how to play different things as a kid; quena, siku, and some percussion instruments
Lopez can play basically anything he wants. People outside the loop will think it is just because he's a robot, and is therefore "copying" music that is already recorded... but Lopez will combine two completely different instruments and use them together in ways most people couldn't think of (he also leans toward very sappy loves songs, inspired by his adoration for Sheila~)
I don't have too many thoughts for the Freelancers... but if they could have had a different life path, York would probably have done well in a boy band, and South would have been a punk-rock star~

She's kind of a plant witch and likes helping flowers or any plants that struggling get stronger. Also farms, she's always lived in cities, but she's always made use of the tiniest balconies to grow different crops. Currently she's working on strawberries so she can make some pastries.
Fascinated with rocks, which isn't surprising given that she's an earth witch and a geology nerd. She's a nerd (but pls be aware that I as a mun know close to nothing about this lol)
abuse tw She was heavily abused by her mother and never had anyone stand up for her (might be subject to change w/ sibling WC), so yeah. She's very prone to feeling unwanted or inadequate. end of abuse tw
Very talented musically and honestly has a pretty decent singing voice, but she isn't ambitious with her talents. She doesn't seek fame or to be very renown? She just wants to be a part of a collective and play music.
Quite complacent with her life even if she's unhappy with how friendless she is, doesn't always work to change it.
She is one of Rohan's long lost siblings that doesn't know she's related to Rohan... yet :)
WANTED CONNECTIONS
Childhood friends. Amrita grew up in Quebec!
Roommates!
Friends who have grown apart or will grow apart.
Good or Bad influences! Could go either way honestly.
Pen Pals! Amrita didn't have a lot of close friends that lived near her, but she had a tendency to look for pen pals. She always sends ornate letters and hand made gifts. She shares recipes and such.
Neighbors! Amrita will probably make some home baked goods for the neighbors, and try her best to keep it down, but she does practice her violin soo! It probably gets noisy from time to time.
Co workers either at The Bloom or The Historical Society!
Having pet troubles? She can try to help! Maybe she sees your muse struggling with your pet or maybe your pet ran away from home? She can try to listen to their thoughts and help you out!
Platonic Soulmate?

The psychedelic experience is integral to the history of the 1960s American underground. This was the era of Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters driving around in their brightly painted bus, indulging in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, swallowing hallucinogenic potions in search of altered mind-states. Bold freethinkers led the nascent psychedelic movement, looking eastwards for esoteric and artistic inspiration.
The first musical whispers of India's burgeoning influence on Western popular music were heard in 1965 when The Beatles George Harrison added the sounds of a sitar to the Rubber Soul album track Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown). Soon everybody from The Yardbirds and The Rolling Stones to Sergio Mendes and The Byrds was reflecting an Indian influence.
During these years in India, drug culture wasn't flooding its shores, but the country was undergoing its own transformation - the 1960s saw the advent of a DIY garage band scene.
Western rock imitations seamed through with raga reverberations began to sound out across the country. The rock-zine Junior Statesmen and the Battle of the Bands competition nights held by Simla Cigarettes at Shanmukhananda Hall in Mumbai cemented the movement. Soon the seductive sound seeped into Bollywood's output with film composers mixing psych with luxuriously lysergic orchestration. A two-way path of influence bound the music of 1960s India with the West.
When compiling this Rough Guide, DJ Ritu cast her psychedelic net wide into the diaspora and the modern day. This album pays homage to the swinging 1960s history whilst forging the journey onwards into psychedelia's present-day incarnations.
Vintage finds on this album include R.D. Burman's Bollywood hit Dum Maro Dum® from the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna. In the film the protagonist, sung here by the inimitable Asha Bhosle, takes deep drags on a large chillum before dancing floppy limbed amidst a throng of her beatnik friends. Dance Music is another throwback Bollywood number by brother composer duo Kalyanji-Anandji. This instrumental explosion has an irresistibly psych-funk feel with fat trumpets, echoing electric keys and breakneck rhythm.
Other tracks on the album root the listener firmly back in the present day and launches into the music of India's vast diaspora. Sunday Driver are a merry band of musicians based in London and Cambridge. They set out their Indian shades of influence against a backdrop of Sgt. Pepper-ish Victoriana. The Bombay Royale are an eleven-piece Australian band inspired by old school Bollywood soundtracks. Ritu was their support DJ at their recent London date, a bombastic show with a stage set that included a life-size model elephant suspended from the ceiling.
Lose yourself in this collection of far out sounds — soaring sitars, tremulous tabla, distorted deep-set drones and unbound improvisations. all twisted through a rock and roll edge.
