If today we are still able to wear tilak and sindur, it is because of brave hearts like Chhaava, Shambhaji Maharaj! 

The sindoor in the parting of our mothers and wives, red tilak on our foreheads at religious ceremonies is still there because Naga Bawas, Pruthviraj Chauhan, Raana Pratap, Shivaji, Shambhaji, Guru Tegh Bahadur, Subhashchandra Bose and hundreds of others like them, who spilled their blood for us to have the freedom for us to follow our culture in our own way. 

We forget this fact at our peril.

From Algeria to Afghanistan, from Maldives to Xinjiang, Islam was spread with the sword and people changed their religion and culture within a generation or two (50 years).

From Mexico to Manila, Greenland to New Zealand, Christianity was spread with the gun and people changed their religion and culture within a generation or two (50 years).

India suffered 800 years of misrule under muslims and 200 years under christians from various parts of Europe - that's 40 generations (1000 years) of living under foreign rule.

The fact that we are still practicing our religion and culture is a testament to the firm resolve of our ancestors to not convert under force, duress, inducement or incentives. Sitting in our comfortable homes, we can't appreciate the sacrifices they had to make for us to have the lives we have today. 

For years, the real history of resistance and resilience our ancestors showed has been kept from us by politicians and pseudo-seculars. History that is obvious in the ruins across our country, alive in the folk-lore of our people, recorded in the histories of our communities has been ignored for far too many years. 

The fighting scenes shown in the film 'Chhaava' show the strategies we know Marathas used to fight mughals. The torture scenes shown in Chhaava are recorded in Aurangzeb's own chronicles to show how they terrorised Hindus of India and killed Shambhaji and children of the Sikh Gurus with utter heartlessness. 

Sikhs still remember the tortures they suffered under Mughals in their daily prayers - Ardas. Hindus and Jains have largely chosen to forget the lessons of their history.

We need films like Chhaava to remind us what can happen to us and our culture if we don't have 'Hindvi Swaraj'.
