Sublimation Print Layering on Silk and Sheer Fabrics

As part of my exploration into layering effects and transparency in textiles, this sample was developed to test how sublimation prints behave on a range of materials. The process involved printing motifs onto various fabrics, including silk in two weights, sheer polyester, and organza, and then overlaying them to create visual depth.

The main sample was composed using a silk base with a sheer polyester overlay. Sublimation printing was applied first on each fabric layer separately. Motifs were carefully aligned so they could be layered one on top of the other, creating complex compositions.

This sample reveals how layering sheer and solid fabrics allows for compelling image distortion and soft focus effects. The imperfect registration between layers offers an organic feel. One of the most successful results was the soft blurring of the silk, and then layering a sheer, drapey fabric over it, which made the motif look delicate.

A limitation was that the light weight silk didn’t produce a strong image, therefore it wont be used in future sublimation work with cyanotype.

I am particularly interested in experimenting further with cotton organza, despite its stiffness, and possibly exploring other sheer biodegradable options, like muslin. This project confirmed the power of fabric layering to convey themes of fragility and duality in my practice.
