China made major advances in submarine stealth technology a few years ago, investigating a mechanically-free propulsion system. 🌨🌳 In order to achieve approximately 70,000 newtons of force using 2 megawatts of laser power supplied by optical fibers, researchers increased the efficiency of laser propulsion. This method improved stealth by using supercavitation to reduce water resistance and remove audible noise. The US investigated magnetohydrodynamic drive (MHD) technology in the interim. Both nations intended to build all-electric, futuristic submarines, but financial constraints and other issues prevent widespread use.
