The two channels have similar names but slightly different content. (3) is important because a known problem with prediction markets is that it's generally irrational for most prospective participants to trade. You usually overcome this by having someone (usually the entity that's interested in the information generated by the market) subsidize the market.
I wanted to know why, exactly, it's said to be irrational to participate in an unsubsidized market, and how subsidies need to be designed in order to overcome that.
The reasoning behind "irrational participation" seems to be, in part, no-trade theorems. It turns out that, if you are fully rational, and you know your counterparty to be (plus a couple other assumptions), the mere fact that your counterparty has offered you a trade is always enough for you to update your beliefs to the point that you'll expect to lose by taking the deal, and hence you will never actually agree to any proposed trade. I think this is closely related to the Aumann agreement theorem: the price offered by your counterparty is information about their beliefs, and those beliefs imply that, in expectation, your counterparty will gain and that you will lose if you take the deal, and, per Aumann, you can't rationally disagree with your counterparty's belief on that point.
The inductive case of this is really interesting: assuming the market starts at an equilibrium, getting new insider information will never help you profit - heck, you won't even want to post an order in a standard double auction market! I half-understood this paper, whose Theorem 1 appears to be rigorously proving that, even if you have just gotten new information that others don't have access to, it's still always the case that, if you offer a trade, either nobody will want to take it (reasonable), or somebody else will take it because they still expect to gain, in which case you'll immediately update your beliefs accordingly and wish you'd never offered the trade.
So how does subsidizing the market fix this issue? And does it take something as complicated as LMSR to do it?
I think that all you actually need is a market participant who is incredibly godawful stupid (let's call it a Sufficiently Stupid Automated Market Maker) and willing to trade with you even though the fact that you wish to trade should tip the SSAMM off. This neatly solves the problem: when you learn some new information, the fact that you now want to trade will scare rational counterparties away, but the SSAMM is still willing to make a deal, which means it's worth your while to offer the trade and thereby shift the market price to incorporate your new information.
The SSAMM will generally lose money to other traders. Bankrolling the SSAMM's losing spree is how you, a market sponsor, avert no-trade theorem problems, and you happen to subsidize participation in the market in doing so.
You don't need a particularly sophisticated SSAMM to make this work. Just about any algorithm (stateful or not) for determining a bid and ask to offer will "work" in the sense that it resolves the no-trade theorem issue. However, if you're bankrolling the SSAMM, you probably don't want to be on the hook for infinity money, so you want to use some "bounded loss" algorithm - you want the SSAMM to quit trading (or, equivalently, to offer a 0% bid and 100% ask) before it hits some budget cap you set. This is still pretty easy to achieve; Robin Hanson's market board game implements a bounded-loss SSAMM that runs on index cards and poker chips in dinky plastic bins.
You can apply the same trick to other market structures. The CFAR prediction markets look like you're trading with other participants, but you're really trading with another SSAMM. The names you put on the rows are just there to record who traded with the SSAMM, and the numbers describe both the terms of that deal (via the scoring rule) and the SSAMM's new standing offer. Again, no-trade theorem averted!
(I have, I think, almost convinced @a-point-in-tumblspace that the CFAR markets are isomorphic to a double auction market with some particular SSAMM that offers a bid equal to its ask, but my argumentation is hamstrung by the fact that I haven't bothered to find the equations describing the isomorphism.)
So, finally, why LMSR? And what the hell is LMSR? Well, it's just another bounded-loss market maker, with some favorable extra properties that I honestly don't understand (yet!). Sorry! But I don't think you need it to solve the "irrational to participate" problem!

MEPs vote to freeze controversial EU-China investment deal | Euronews
In the joint resolution approved on Thursday with 599 votes in favour and 30 against, MEPs lambaste Beijing's response, calling it "an attack against the European Union and its Parliament as a whole, the heart of European democracy and values, as well as an attack against freedom of research".
The European Parliament has overwhelmingly voted to freeze the ratification of the EU-China investment deal due to the sanctions that Beijing has imposed on five members of the hemicycle.
In a strongly-worded resolution passed on Thursday afternoon, the Parliament also deplores what it calls the "crimes against humanity" that are taking place against the Uyghur Muslim minority in the Xinjiang region and the crackdown on the democratic opposition in Hong Kong.
The latest development represents a new blow to the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) that European leaders reached during a video call with Chinese President Xi Jinping less than five months ago.
The Chinese government reacted to the European Parliament's vote by calling on Brussels to "immediately stop interfering in China’s internal affairs (and) abandon its confrontational approach".
“The unreasonable sanctions imposed by the EU have led to difficulties in China-EU relations. That is what China does not want to see, and the responsibility does not lie with the Chinese side," China foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a daily briefing.
Zhao reiterated China's stance that the agreement is a “balanced and win-win deal that benefits both sides, rather than a gift or favour bestowed by one side to the other."
“China has always been sincere in promoting cooperation between the two sides, and we hope that the European side will move in the same direction as us, with less emotional outburst and more rational thinking, and make the right decision in their own interests," Zhao said.
EU, China sanction each other
The agreement's main goal is to increase market access and ensure fair treatment for EU investors and companies doing business in China. The text wants to create a so-called level playing field and contains provisions on state-owned enterprises and subsidies.
While initially hailed as landmark, the agreement was quickly criticised for what critics say are insufficient commitments made in regards to labour rights, particularly forced labour. This issue has become politically thorny after revelations emerged of forced labour inside the detention camps in Xinjiang, which add to accusations of torture, disappearance, forced sterilisations, sexual violence and mass surveillance.
The ratification of the investment deal by the European Parliament – a necessary step in the EU legislative cycle – was in doubt from the very moment the draft text was published, but tensions escalated rapidly when, in late March, the European Union decide to impose the first sanctions against China in more than 30 years.
The raft of measures, designed in coordination with Western allies, targeted four Chinese officials and one entity believed to be involved in the human rights violations against the Uyghur minority.
China reacted swiftly and furiously: in an almost instantaneous counter-strike, the Chinese Foreign Ministry slapped sanctions on ten European individuals, including five Members of the European Parliament, and four entities, among which was the Parliament's subcommittee on human rights.
Beijing also blacklisted democratically-elected officials from the UK, the US and Canada. In total, more than 30 individuals and entities were sanctioned.
An 'attack' against the EU
The Chinese counter-sanctions have infuriated the European Parliament and soured the mood for ratification.

"While the EU’s sanctions target human rights violations and are based on legitimate and proportionate measures embedded in international law, China’s sanctions lack any legal justification, are entirely unsubstantiated and arbitrary and target the criticism of such human rights violations," the parliamentarians wrote.
The MEPs say that any discussion around the investment deal "has justifiably been frozen because of the Chinese sanctions" and refuse to open the debate as long as they remain in place. They argue their ability to scrutinise the agreement has been "significantly hindered" by the restrictions placed on the subcommittee on human rights.
Moreover, the Parliament "considers the sanctions to be part of an effort to police speech about China worldwide and to determine what kind of speech and discussions would be allowed globally, and sees this effort as part of a totalitarian threat".
