The song "Sun City" by Artists United Against Apartheid features over 50 artists participating to raise awareness about the apartheid system in South Africa.
Some of the notable artists include Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Run-D.M.C., Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Ruben Blades, Pat Benatar, Herbie Hancock, Ringo Starr, Peter Gabriel, Bob Geldof, Clarence Clemons, Darlene Love, Bobby Womack, The Fat Boys, Jackson Browne, Daryl Hannah, George Clinton, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bonnie Raitt, Hall & Oates, Jimmy Cliff, Joey Ramone, and many more.
These artists also vowed never to perform at Sun City, because to do so would be an acceptance of apartheid.
The song was written and produced by Steven Van Zandt.
It premiered at the United Nations, thanks to the Special Committee Against Apartheid.
The song was only a modest hit with only about half of American radio stations agreeing to play "Sun City," with some objecting to the lyrics' explicit criticism of President Ronald Reagan's policies.
Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) refused to broadcast the non-profit film The Making of Sun City even though it won the International Documentary Association's top honors in 1986.
The song was banned in South Africa.
The album and single raised more than a million U.S. dollars for anti-apartheid projects.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: PRESCIENT POP FROM THE 1980s
Rampant artificial intelligence? Robot sex? Art made by machines? Information Age mental-health issues? Global boiling? Whatever your favourite paranoid vision of the future may once have been, you were right: they’ve all come true. Welcome. It’s been three decades since I was a teenager, and I find it fascinating to watch the prognostications of the 1980s manifesting themselves in real time only…
