Little did he know that Formula One teams had an eye on him. Sargeant did two simulation evaluation days for Mercedes during his time in F3. He impressed James Vowles, who spent over a decade with Mercedes before taking the helm at Williams this year. “I was interested in looking at him because he had performance,” Vowles said, “especially when you go back to his Formula 3 performance in an average team.”
[...] At the time, Mercedes had a stacked driver group, and it moved on. Another team stepped in: Williams.
The call from management came in October 2021, a moment even Jacobs recalls vividly. He remembers looking up towards the sky and “sort of prayed saying, ‘Please, please let this happen.’” Williams — one of the oldest teams on the F1 grid — wanted to fund Sargeant’s F2 career because, according to Vowles (who was not part of the decision then or to bump him up to F1), the team “had deep belief that he was the real deal.”
In Sargeant, Williams’ sporting director Sven Smeets saw a young driver with “enormous potential” despite his taking a step backward. Smeets described the young driver as grateful yet quiet, at least at first, as he observed everything around him. He started going to the factory in the U.K. frequently as an academy driver during his F2 season last year. On the track, his performance continued to improve. As Sargeant started inching higher in the standings, breaking into the top three, Smeets said Williams began weighing whether he needed a second season in F2.
His one-lap qualifying speed in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia caught their eye. An F2 win in Silverstone also stood out. There was only one race they truly felt he made a mistake, in Holland. The others, Smeets said, were “a bad start from the line or the pitstop didn’t go that well.” They began telling Carlin Racing that if he’s still in the top three or four, what more is there for him to learn with another season in F2?
Former Williams team principal Jost Capito announced the decision in Austin during the 2022 U.S. Grand Prix weekend: Sargeant would be part of Williams’ 2023 F1 driver lineup.
Sitting inside the Austin paddock that weekend, it was evident that a wall was up as Sargeant did his first serious media rounds. The driver was reserved but thought through his answers, adding caveats like “not yet.”
Grounded but quiet.
Williams did what it could to ease the pressure. It added practice session appearances, and, heading into Abu Dhabi, simulation work and physical and mental work also increased. Making the jump from F2 to F1 is massive. Along with a more complex car and far stronger competitors, the team itself is bigger, and the media and marketing engagements more frequent and demanding.
“You also saw a Logan that is very, very, very emotional and something which you don’t see much from him,” Smeets said of the moment the last F2 race finished and Sargeant had secured enough points on his super license to make his move to F1 official. “So it became the raw emotion which I saw in Silverstone when he won the race.”

Jamie Chadwick: W Series champion to stay in Williams driver development programme
Jamie Chadwick on her move into Indy NXT with Andretti Autosport Britain's Jamie Chadwick will continue with the Williams driver development programme for a fifth season in 2023. The three-time W Series champion will have "a personalised simulator program to aid in her progression and provide valuable support to the team's race preparations," a statement said. Chadwick, 24, is racing in the American Indy NXT series, a feeder category for IndyCars, with Andretti Autosport. "To be continuing my relationship with Williams is amazing," Chadwick said. "I've had their support since 2019. Having the opportunity to immerse myself within the team and keep that Formula 1 dream alive is very important." Williams sporting director Sven Smeets said: "Jamie is an incredibly talented driver and an important role model in inspiring the next generation of females in motorsport." Chadwick won her third title in W Series - a women-only championship - in October after the final three races were cancelled because of funding issues. Williams announcing their new F3 driver (Franco Colapinto) and still no words on their F1 team TP or other higher ups missing from their staff... I'm starting to get really worried, I mean, Mclaren promoted someone from inside their team as their new TP, either Williams can't afford to do such a move for various reasons or there's really no one willing to take that job???
I will level with you, I had no clue who he was and when I saw it thought “Jeez, he’s a bit young for a TP?!” 💀💀
I’m shocked they’re announcing this stuff before the important stuff if I’m honest. I don’t know that Williams do have anyone internal to promote? The last internal promotion the did was Simon Roberts and he didn’t last long and was… not great?
The only motorsport connecting person they have in their leadership team is currently Sven Smeets who is Sporting Director, everyone else comes from a business background. James Matthews who is part of Dorilton has ‘racing experience’ but nothing that could make him a credible TP.
I think they’re going to have to hire externally so they’re either having trouble finding someone or they’re keeping very tight lipped still?

It’s colorful, it’s provocative, it's avant-garde, it’s stunning: It's The Ghetto Tarot! The Ghetto Tarot is a photographic interpretation of the traditional tarot deck in the ghetto. The scenes are inspired by the Rider Waite Tarot deck and are replicated together with a group of Haitian artists called Atis Rezistans (resistant artists) in the Haitian slums using only material we were able to find or create locally. On several cards we used the artists art, that includes symbolism from the Voodoo religion to embody the important meaning of the cards original symbols. 
While the cards were designed hundreds of years ago with the situations of the time when the world was young, they resonate today with timeless symbols that can be applied to our busy modern world. And not just our modern, western world, but also to any other continent, country or culture, including the Haitian Ghetto. So here comes a temporary, provocative and vivid tarot deck!

Der Fokus liegt darauf, Kunden in aller Welt Spitzenprodukte für verschiedene Motorsport-Kategorien anzubieten. Neben dem 2016 eingeführten Golf GTI TCR für die Rundstrecke baut Volkswagen Motorsport seine technische Unterstützung im Rallycross-Sport aus, arbeitet an einem Rallye-Kundenfahrzeug auf Basis der nächsten Generation des Polo und setzt das langjährige Engagement als Motorenpartner in der Formel 3 fort. Der Wandel vom Werksteam hin zum Hersteller von Motorsport-Fahrzeugen für Kunden erfordert gleichzeitig strukturelle Veränderungen und neue Prozesse.
„Ich spüre großes Engagement und große Motivation bei den Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern, die neuen Aufgaben anzugehen“, sagt Volkswagen Motorsport-Direktor Sven Smeets. „Wir konzentrieren uns auf neue Projekte wie zum Beispiel die Entwicklung des Polo R5 und die Zusammenarbeit mit Volkswagen Schweden und Petter Solberg in der Rallycross-WM. Dazu arbeiten wir mit Hochdruck an bewährten und erfolgreichen Projekten wie Global Rallycross in den USA, TCR mit dem Golf GTI und Formel 3. Darüber hinaus gibt es bei Kunden Interesse, den bewährten Polo R WRC bei verschiedenen Rallyes einzusetzen. Unsere Aufgabenliste ist sehr gut gefüllt.“
Rallye: neues Kundenfahrzeug auf Basis der kommenden Polo Generation Die Neuentwicklung eines Rallyefahrzeuges der R5-Kategorie für Kundensportteams hat bereits begonnen. Die ganze Erfahrung von zwölf Titeln in der Rallye-Weltmeisterschaft wird in die Entwicklung des Allradlers einfließen. Das Auto, das auf der nächsten Generation des Polo basiert, wird im Laufe des Jahres erste Testfahrten absolvieren. Bei der Entwicklung setzt Volkswagen Motorsport seine Zusammenarbeit mit der Konzernmarke Škoda fort: Der kompakte, rund 280 PS starke 1,6-Liter-Turbomotor, der bereits im Škoda Fabia R5 zum Einsatz kommt, wurde gemeinsam entwickelt und wird weiter optimiert. Weiterhin in Planung ist der Einsatz des Polo R WRC aus dem Jahr 2016 im Kundenauftrag.
Rallycross: Volkswagen Importeure mit erstklassigen Fahrern und Teams Volkswagen Motorsport freut sich auf die Zusammenarbeit mit zwei großen Namen im Motorsport: In der Global Rallycross (GRC) wird die bestehende enge Partnerschaft zwischen Volkswagen of America und dem Team Andretti Autosport ausgebaut – mit dem Ziel Titelverteidigung. GRC-Champion Scott Speed und US-Superstar Tanner Foust werden weiterhin die Fahrerpaarung für die beiden 560 PS starken Beetle bilden, die bei Volkswagen Motorsport entwickelt und aufgebaut wurden. Bei ersten Testfahrten Mitte Januar in Phoenix/Arizona absolvierten Speed und Foust rund 350 Kilometer mit dem für 2017 überarbeiteten Chassis. Optisch bleibt der Erfolgs-Beetle nahezu unverändert, lediglich kleine aerodynamische Modifikationen wie eine optimierte Bremsentlüftung wurden integriert.
Auch in der FIA Rallycross-Weltmeisterschaft (WRX) steht ein Dream-Team mit Volkswagen am Start: Keine Geringeren als die Rallye-Legende Petter Solberg und der Nachwuchsstar Johan Kristoffersson gehen 2017 gemeinsam mit Volkswagen Schweden in der WRX an den Start. Der norwegische Superstar und der junge Schwede werden bei allen zwölf WM-Läufen, vom Start in Barcelona (E) bis zum Saisonfinale in Kapstadt (ZA), mit zwei 570 PS starken Volkswagen Polo GTI Supercars auf Punktejagd gehen. Der Einsatz der Fahrzeuge, ebenfalls entwickelt und gebaut in Hannover, wird vor Ort von Petter Solbergs Team verantwortet, wird aber technisch von Volkswagen Motorsport unterstützt.
Tourenwagen: Erfolgreicher Golf GTI TCR wird weiterentwickelt Er kam, sah und siegte: Bereits in der ersten vollen Saison fuhr der Golf GTI TCR vom Team Leopard Racing mit dem Schweizer Stefano Comini am Steuer den Titel in der Internationalen TCR-Serie ein, das Liqui Moly Team Engstler gewann mit Andy Yan den Titel in der asiatischen TCR-Meisterschaft. Rund 20 Autos wurden im letzten Jahr an zehn Kundenteams verkauft, für 2017 ist eine Stückzahl von 30 Golf GTI TCR geplant. Der neue 2017er-Renn-Golf hat im Vergleich zum Vorgänger eine effizientere Aerodynamik, die zu mehr Abtrieb bei gleichzeitig weniger Luftwiderstand führt. Am 2. April startet die Saison der TCR International Series im Rustavi International Motorpark in Georgien. Neben der Internationalen TCR-Serie existieren inzwischen insgesamt zwölf nationale TCR-Serien von Benelux bis Thailand, Tendenz steigend.
Formel-Sport: Fortsetzung einer Erfolgsstory Rekord-Weltmeister in der Formel 1: Michael Schumacher. Rekord-Champion in der DTM: Bernd Schneider. Rekord-Sieger in Le Mans: Tom Kristensen. Sie alle sind durch die Schule der Formel 3 „powered by Volkswagen“ gegangen. Genauso wie die aktuellen Formel-1-Piloten Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo und Carlos Sainz jr., die ebenfalls auf ihrem Weg in die Königsklasse von Volkswagen Power beschleunigt wurden. Diese Erfolgsgeschichte soll fortgeschrieben werden: In der FIA Formel-3-Europameisterschaft werden die Kundenteams Carlin (GB) und Team Motopark (D) auch 2017 Fahrzeuge mit 2-Liter-Rennmotoren mit knapp 240 PS Leistung von Volkswagen für aufstrebende Talente einsetzen.

Volkswagen ID. R Crowned “Race Car of the Year” Twice
Breath-taking all-time record at the legendary hill climb on Pikes Peak with a pioneering, fully-electric drivetrain and a spectacular look – the Volkswagen ID. R Pikes Peak has already justified the use of many superlatives. The 500 kW (680 PS) prototype sports car has now been crowned “Race Car of the Year” twice – by specialist German magazine Auto Bild Motorsport and by British car magazine BBC Top Gear. This recognition from two renowned and high-circulation magazines follows a year of success on the track.
Back in June, Romain Dumas set a new all-time record of 7:57.148 minutes with the ID. R at the “Race to the Clouds” on Pikes Peak, smashing the previous record for the extremely demanding, 19.99- kilometer hill climb by 16 seconds and made headlines around the world in the process. This triumph made the ID. R the first fully-electric racing car to come out on top in direct competition with cars powered by combustion engines. The ID. R is the motorsport forerunner of the ID. family of electric cars, which Volkswagen will launch in 2019.

Set a new record on Pikes Peak and show how dynamic, emotional and powerful electromobility can be,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets, who received the award from Auto Bild Motorsport at the formal gala during the Essen Motor Show in Germany on Friday evening. “When it comes to the sporting result, we far exceeded our expectations and completed the fastest assent of Pikes Peak in the history of the race.

Jamie Chadwick to continue with Williams Driver Academy in 2023
Indy NXT driver Jamie Chadwick will remain with the Williams Driver Academy this year as she prepares to make her debut in the IndyCar feeder series. Chadwick joined the Williams Driver Academy in 2019 and won three consecutive W Series titles. This year, she will continue working with Williams in a "personalised simulator program" as she embarks on her maiden Indy NXT (formerly Indy lights) campaign with Andretti Autosport. Wolfsburg (07 November 2017). The GTI for rallying: With the Polo GTI R5, Volkswagen returns to rallying under a new guise. In the second half of 2018, Volkswagen will make the 270 hp rally version of the Polo available to professional teams and aspiring drivers to enable them to compete in championships across the globe – including the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). A sketch of the car, which is based on the new Polo of the sixth generation, gives a foretaste of what’s to come. “With the Polo GTI R5 we are hoping to transfer our expertise from four WRC titles to customer racing successfully, and offer a first-class racing machine for countless rally championships from national series to the WRC,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets. “Before the first race outing next year, we will subject the Polo GTI R5 to rigorous testing to make sure it is prepared for the extremely varied track conditions around the world.” The development of the Polo GTI R5 has been in full swing since the start of the year, with initial test drives planned for this year. The experience gained from the successful WRC era is being incorporated directly: Volkswagen Motorsport Technical Director François-Xavier “FX” Demaison, father of the record winning Polo R WRC, is responsible for the development of the Polo GTI R5.
