Herbert Zipper was an internationally renowned composer, conductor, and arts activist who was imprisoned at Dachau in the 1930s. During that time, he had had crude musical instruments constructed out of stolen material and formed a secret orchestra that performed on Sunday afternoons for the other inmates.

Released in 1939, he accepted an invitation to conduct the Manila Symphony Orchestra but was jailed for four months by the Japanese during their occupation of the Philippines. After his release, he worked secretly for the Allies, transmitting shipping information by radio. In 1946 he emigrated to the United States, where he conducted the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra and promoted music education. In this photo, taken on March 10, 1949, he was conductor of the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, and he makes some observations on an opera to violinist Sylvia Medford.

HAPPY PRIDE, EVERYONE!

As Pride month begins amidst a wave of protests and unrest in this country, as Black people fight for their very existence, we must remember this fact: Stonewall was a RIOT. It was a riot protesting police violence and brutality against the LGBTQIA+ community. Protesting police brutality is exactly what is happening right now.

If you do not believe Black Lives Matter, how can you possibly celebrate Pride? We would not have the rights we have today without the tireless work of the Black and Brown members of the LGBTQIA+ community, especially Black and Brown trans women Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, pictured above.

They paved the way for the many flags which we wave proudly this month, for the children, teens, and adults who feel comfortable in their gender identities and romantic orientations and want to celebrate them, for us to come together in like-minded groups of people and create found families. They made it possible to be ourselves, out loud.

Their lives mattered. BLACK. LIVES. MATTER.
