The dancing lights over Norway of the end of summer/start of fall. Original caption:
"It is common belief that September is too early to view the Northern Lights within the Arctic circle. Truthfully, it is one of the best times to see them, especially if you don't like the cold. September is my favorite month of the year for aurora, as you have a bit of both cold and warm worlds.
The still mild temperatures enable you to get the precious reflection of the auroral dance in the still water of lakes and fjords. All hikes are also very accessible as the snow hasn't fallen in big and dangerous quantities yet. As a conclusion, you can literally enjoy the northern lights from anywhere. It opens up so many more opportunities than at the heart of the winter. This year, we are just coming out of solar minimum. And it shows! The month of September alone has been extremely productive, with both coronal hole High Speed Streams and CMEs (stealthy). More precisely, the week of September 24th - October 1st has delivered insane nightly shows back to back! I wanted to showcase these beautiful displays that I was able to capture in Northern Norway (Senja and Troms area), as the leaves were starting to turn into golden and orange hues. I will publish a more general 'Fall-themed' movie in the near future. Stay tuned! All was shot with the Sony a7s, a7rII and 2 Canon 6D astromodified, a variety of bright lenses ranging from 14mm to 50mm. For motion control I used the Syrp 3-axis Genie I system and also the Vixen Polarie. All post production was made in Lr with the special timelapse plus plugin, Sequence for mac, TLDF, and final production was made in FCPX. I hope you like the movie as much as I liked shooting and processing it and I thank everyone of you for your support. All content is of course copyrighted Night Lights Films (except sountrack licensed through Epidemic Music, see credits for authors and titles), and no footage can be used in any way without the author’s permission. The World's First Under Over Water Astro Timelapse from Mark Gee on Vimeo.
When it comes to photography and my creative work in general, I’m always trying to think outside the box of how I can do things in new and creative ways, especially things that haven’t been done before.
A few years back, I successfully shot a short film of underwater motion control time-lapse, and since then I’ve thought of taking it a few steps further and try to capture an under/over water astro time-lapse. My first attempt about a year ago was a huge fail, and since then I’ve been getting out when I can, scouting for suitable locations around my home in Wellington, New Zealand, and trying different gear and techniques to capture what I had in mind.
Earlier this month, I finally nailed it - still not technically perfect and I have a few more things to work out, but it was the best result to date. It was meant to also be a day to night under/over water astro time-lapse, but I had technical issues with the set-up, and missed my day time start by 40 minutes. Still I’m absolutely wrapped in the way it turned out, so I thought I’d put a clip together to show the actual time-lapse I shot, along with some behind the scenes footage.
The time-lapse was shot using a Syrp Genie One motion control unit for the camera motion, a Nikon D850 and Sigma Art 14mm lens housed in an AquaTech underwater housing. The planning of the position and timing of the Milky Way rising was planned with PhotoPills.

ENTRE CIEL ET TERRE - La Palma in 4K astrolapse from Night Lights Films on Vimeo.
There are only a few regions in the world where the skies meet the Earth with almost no distinction between the two. La Palma in the Canary islands is one of them. ‘Entre Ciel et Terre’ literally means ‘Between the sky and Earth’ and was a perfect fit here. While most of the volcanic island is isolated under a thick layer of clouds, the tip of its crater often punches through it and allows you to be one step closer to the Heavens. At an altitude of about 2300 meters above sea level you feel so far removed from any kind of civilization especially because of the cloud inversion. The air is thin and pristine and the living conditions are harsh but that’s the reason why the ORM (Observatory Roque de Los Muchachos) -operated by the IAC (Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias) and part of the European Northern Observatory, was built up there. The summit of La Palma’s caldera benefits from dry and clear skies almost year round with almost no light pollution to disturb it, and only rare Calima (this dusty wind coming from the Sahara desert). It’s safe to say that the ‘Isla Bonita’ is one of the top places in the world to observe the northern hemisphere’s night sky!
The purpose of this short was to capture that special place from a different perspective. I really wanted to give the audience sort of a confusion as to where they are because that’s precisely the feeling you get when you look up at the stars from the mountains. You somehow lose sense of any orientation as if you were lost in the immensity of the universe! One image that I had in my head to describe La Palma’s summit was Asgard or Mount Olympus, where all the elements are united and blend together divinely. Even life found a way to survive in this environment bombarded by high-energy rays during the day and battered by cold winds at night. One highlighted species is the fascinating and mind-boggling Tajinaste flower. Also called Tenerife Bugloss or tower of jewels, this docile and resilient endemic plant can endure extreme drought. I included it in the movie because it looks majestic and prehistoric. It really adds something special to the special atmosphere I wanted to convey, especially when the milky way galaxy and the sea of clouds move in the background! By tracking the night sky or displaying the sequences upside-down I was able to give that impression of the Earth floating and rotating in the void of the cosmos. The unusual but innovative close-up views of some parts of the milky way (including the core, Rho Ophiuchi or Cygnus) moving behind the operating telescopes of the OMC helped me give that only human dimension to the movie. The use of an astro-modified camera also enabled me to almost get the full range of colors a DSLR can pick up on single frames from nebulae.
I already traveled to La Palma island in November 2017 but I really wanted to shoot there again for several reasons. First I really wanted to get more shots of the core region that would be less spoiled by light pollution than the ones I recently took on Tenerife. Secondly I desperately wanted to meet the extremely talented photographer Alyn Wallace (check him out: alynwallacephotography.com) and do a collaboration with him on the island. Thirdly I am still on my way of perfecting the novel art of deep-sky time-lapse and I wanted to reshoot some sequences that didn’t give satisfying results in the past. Finally I wanted to personally experience the Spring vibe of the island when all the plants are blooming and give that sweet smell to the air. I am absolutely thrilled to have met all my expectations (and more!), and I really believe the results look stunning!
Everything was recorded with the Canon 6D Baader modified, the Sony a7s, the Sony a7rII and a variety of bright lenses ranging from 14mm to 300mm. I used the Lonely Speck Pure Night and Matt Aust Light pollution filters to reduce light pollution and increase details, and also the Vixen Polarie to track the stars and get cleaner shots. Syrp Genie 3 axis system was used for motion control. All post production was made in Lr with the special timelapse plus plugin, Sequence for mac, TLDF, and final production was made in FCPX. I hope you like the movie as much as I liked shooting and processing it and I thank everyone of you for your support. Take in the rocky landscape of the Isle of Skye off Scotland's Northwest Coast. Original caption:
Went on a life affirming, epic, 40,000 photo, 2000 mile roadtrip to the Isle of Skye in May 2019; armed with 2 Canon 6D's, 7 lenses, a Syrp Genie 3 Axis Motion Controller, Insta360 One X & P4P Pro. After first visiting in April the year before I was completely blown away by the place, and captured a few of the sequences, which appear in this film. However, I was determined to go back, see more, do more, and try to capture the magnificence that is Skye. I climbed my first Munro, pushed my limits with heights, and captured a fraction of this large island. I drove and hiked more than 800 miles in 6 days to capture whatever the island threw at me weather-wise, and came away feeling a lot happier, connected, and in control of my own life than I have ever felt. I hope that comes across in this short film. Thank you for your support."

Time Lapse Photography Equipment Needed for Pro Results | Improve Photography
New Post has been published on https://photographyguideto.com/trending/time-lapse-photography-equipment-needed-for-pro-results-improve-photography/
Time Lapse Photography Equipment Needed for Pro Results | Improve Photography

You can find time lapse videos just about everywhere you look. You’ve probably dabbled with it a little bit, or seen it on different websites, YouTube videos, even in TV shows or ads. Making time lapses is much easier these days, with all the new digital tools and software that is available to make the more challenging-looking time lapses easy to do. You may have read through my article this past summer on making day to night time lapses. There is also a wide range of equipment available to take your time lapses to a whole new level and get those pro results. Some options can be on the costly side, but there are very affordable options to choose from too. Here are some equipment options that you can use to get those pro results in your time lapse videos.
Smartphone on a Tripod or Gorillapod
The simplest setup to do time lapse photography is from using your smartphone. All modern smartphones have the ability to record time lapse video in the camera app. An important factor is to make sure your smartphone remains stable, since camera shake throughout a time lapse video will not give that pro look. While you could just prop your smartphone on a stable surface, that can be limiting in terms of how you compose your scene. That’s assuming there is even a stable surface where you are to prop the smartphone on. Using a tripod adapter and attaching it to your tripod or even a Gorillapod, gives you maximum flexibility. Tripod adapters are very inexpensive and can be purchased on Amazon for less than $20.

SMARTPHONE ADAPTER ATTACHED TO TRIPOD
Panning motion
As simple as time lapse photography can be, having the time lapse video record from a single spot with a single composition can get boring and to a certain degree, can be considered overshot. It’s the easiest to do and with so many people having smartphones with the ability to record time lapses, there are a lot of them out there. One way you can add interest to your time lapse videos is by adding motion. Not motion in terms of having people or objects moving within the video, but movement of the video frame itself.
One way to do this is to add panning movement; essentially, setting up your camera such that it rotates steadily from one side to the other for the duration of your time lapse. There are several kinds of controllers that can be used to add this panning motion to your time lapse, which range in cost and capabilities. These controllers attach to the top of your tripod, which you then attach your camera to.
You can find this Flow-Mow Time Lapse Motion Controller for a budget-friendly $50 on Amazon. It is has limitations, as it will only rotate at a single speed. If you’re just getting started into time lapses, it makes for an easy, low cost option to choose from. You may however, find that the rotation speed is either too fast or too slow, depending on what camera settings you plan on using. I personally found it too fast for what I like doing, so ended up returning it.

SCREENSHOT OF PRODUCT LISTING
The Syrp Genie is another time lapse controller which has a lot more flexibility. You can customize settings within it or use factory pre-sets, it can do 360 degree panning, it has a built in bubble level, and lots more. It is however on the pricey side, costing $650.

SCREENSHOT OF PRODUCT LISTING
The VidPro controller is somewhere in the middle. A more moderate $100 in cost on Amazon and while it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that the Syrp Genie has, it does have the ability to select from different time durations of rotation, degrees of rotation and direction of rotation. For what I like doing, I found this to be a good balance between rotational flexibility and cost.

Sliding motion
Taking motion one step further would be from the use of a slider, which gives a horizontal sense of movement. If you couple this with a panning motion controller as described above to get both panning and sliding motion, that would take your time lapse to a whole other level. This is the kind of pro technique that you don’t come across as frequently as with the other options. Just like the panning motion controllers, there are several types of sliders that can be used to get this side-to-side movement.
This Neewer slider is a budget-friendly system that can be found on Amazon for $80-95, depending on the rail length. It’s a very simple rail system that you can mount your camera on to. This slider also has the ability to mount from the slider end and from a central fixed plate on to a tripod, which will give you the ability to do vertical movements or even 45 degree angle movements, in addition to horizontal. This slider is not motorized, so you will need to manually slide the camera on the rails.

SCREENSHOT OF PRODUCT LISTING
There are motorized sliders as well, such as those made by Rhino or this Varavon slider on Amazon, which will slide the camera automatically. Of course, these are more expensive and can range in cost starting from $300-600 depending on the features that you get, such as programmability and even a panning attachment.

SCREENSHOT OF PRODUCT LISTING

SCREENSHOT OF PRODUCT LISTING
Another option is to make your own DIY slider. A Google search can uncover many tutorials on how to do this. The tutorials range anywhere from making the entire slider yourself, to attaching a motor to a non-motorized slider, like the Neewer slider above.
Neutral Density filter
If you want to do time lapse photography during the daytime but need to slow down the shutter speed to get more fluid transitions, neutral density (ND) filters are a great tool. Think of ND filters as sunglasses for your camera. The slower shutter speeds will give much more interesting transitions, with movement in the time lapse looking more seamless and less “jumpy” from frame to frame. This is especially more noticeable when the motion is fast, like traffic or crowds of people.
The type of ND filter you get in terms of number of stops of light reduction to the camera, depends on how much you want to slow the shutter speed down. For example and to paraphrase Sharky James, if daylight conditions have your camera settings at f/8 and 1/250 seconds, a 3-stop filter will slow you down to 1/30 seconds, whereas a 10-stop filter will slow you down to 4 seconds.
ND filters can also range in cost, depending on quality and the type of filter you get. You can find filters that are round and screw on to your lens, or are square and require a filter holder system to attach to your lens. Lower quality filters tend to cause colour casts on your images. Whether you decide to get ND filters or not may be part of a broader decision on your overall filter needs, since you can use a ND filter for more than time lapses. Here is a great article that Pete LaGregor wrote last year which gives an overview on lens filters, including ND filters and filter sizes/systems.
All of these are great tools that can bring your time lapse photography to the next level, giving you that pro look. How and whether you choose to use any or all of these options is up to you with what you are trying to accomplish with your video. Remember that just because a slider with a pan controller maximizes the type of movement you can get, you wouldn’t want to do this for all your time lapses. In many cases, it can be an overkill effect where just attaching your camera onto a tripod will do. And there’s nothing wrong with just propping the camera on a tripod. What other techniques have you used to get pro results with your time lapses? Feel free to share in the comments.

Syrp Genie Mini Motion Control is a new photography product on the market to use in conjunction with your camera or GoPro along with a tripod for smooth panning to put it in short. So lets explain this in some more details.
The company that designed and made the product is Syrp and in their own words its a Motion Control that fits in your pocket. The Genie mini is an extremely easy-to-use device to create smooth panning motion time-lapse or real-time video. Wirelessly connect to the Genie Mini using the Syrp Genie App for quick setup and simple control.
I was taking a trip to Cuba in February this year, so what better place to put the Syrp Genie Mini to the test. For this I was going to concentrate on two functions, Timelaps and video for smooth panning. Using a GoPro Hero 5 Black and recording in 1080p for speed when transferring from the GoPro to my iPad.
Syrp Genie Mini App
You need to download the App on to your phone or iPad to setup and control the Syrp Genie Mini. Everything is straight forward even to a point of having presets for motion control. You can dive in to the manual settings for a more custom panorama.
#gallery-0-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-5 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-5 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Above you can see the settings workflow for the Time Lapse using the GoPro as the camera. After setting up the start and end points for the Genie all you have to do is press record on both devices then sit back and watch the magic happen.
Syrp Genie Mini Pros
The one thing I will say about using this small portable device is you’re going to get amazingly smooth panning and time laps videos. This will certainly improve your videos and make for a much better watching experience for little cost, but most important portable. On the device its self there is a simple on and off button and also a charging port. If you’re wanting to do image time laps you can purchase a separate cable that will allow you to plug your camera in to the Syrp Genie Mini allowing the app to also control your camera.
The Syrp Genie Mini is a Bluetooth enabled device and this is how it will connect to your phone or tablet, so remember to charge the unit before heading out.
Syrp Genie Mini Cons
With every good point there is always a bad point. Lets have a look at what I think needs improving. One thing to note is if you’re doing a video pan you can’t use the audio from the footage. This is due to your cameras microphones picking up the sound of the motors from the Genie Mini. Look at the test video I’ve covered to outline this. You will see the audio is unusable.
The next point is the on and off button on the device. It’s so easy to turn the device on with just a light tap on the side. Imagine you have fully charged the unit before heading out on a full days shoot only to find its flat when you get there.
Conclusion
I had a lot of fun with the Genie Mini in the short time I’ve used it. This will definitely become a part of my video kit bag for getting smoother panning. Imagine covering a property video for an estate agent. This would give you perfect smooth panning on a small footprint.
With a price tag of around £275 its well worth it compared to the professional sliders you can purchase in the thousands.

Thanks to JP Distribution for the loan of the unit
