TG:re ch 61 reaction

Warnings: spoilers, theories, and a really fucking long post.

Just read Tokyo Ghoul:re chapter 61 and wow. I feel vindicated. There’s been rumors that V and the CCG were in bed together, and I’ve always supported that theory. It’s nice to have that confirmed.

Also what’s nice to have confirmed: Eto is NOT the One-Eyed King. From the beginning everyone in the manga was like “One-Eyed Owl is One-Eyed King.” It was too obvious. Tokyo Ghoul doesn’t go for the obvious. So for there to be another person who is the One-Eyed King makes perfect sense.

Now the question is, who is the One-Eyed King? My vote is for Kaneki. I’m not saying that he’s the one pulling the strings or anything like that. Rather, in chapter 61, Eto mentions that a One-Eyed Ghoul is a portent of great change. Kaneki fits that bill. He’s not the leader of Aogiri, but rather the center of change. Aogiri likely wants to harness that since they want to change the world to give ghouls an equal standing in society.

Also, dwaaa, Kaneki still cares about the Quinx. He’s trying to hide it, like the stoic badass he’s pretending to be, but face it, we all know deep down inside Kaneki has always been a marshmallow. You can see that he cares because one: he listens to Furuta’s reports about all the Quinx (both new and old) instead of tuning Furuta out and two: he thinks back on the photo he took with the original Quinx squad as Haise. It’s nice to see that he still cares about them.

Next: Matsuri you jerk. He’s a jerko. Even his dad thinks he’s a jerk (the verbal smack down that Yoshitoki gave Matsuri was the best part of chapter 60). I get that they’re trying to build a little bit of sympathy for him for being stuck in a loveless marriage, but even so, Matsuri is a jerk. I hope there is some character development for him, because damn he needs it, kind of like how Urie got that needed character development with Shirazu’s death. (cries) Dunno how they’re going to build some character development for Matsuri, but I really hope they don’t kill his dad (’cause Yoshitoki is awesome).

Anyway, going back to V and the CCG. Not surprised that Arima is in on it. He would be the kind of guy that’s involved in that sorta under the table dealing. I wonder who else is in the know. Likely the Washuus know, that’s obvious. Though, it would be hilarious if Matsuri doesn’t know, but Yoshitoki and Tsuneyosh do. I’m also both surprised and not surprised that Furuta is in on it. I mean, I figured he would know, but I didn’t expect for it to be implied that he’s on V’s payroll like Arima is.

Oh Furuta, Furuta, Furuta...You are certainly a pretty pickle. I’m not even sure who’s side you’re on. I love the Furuta = Souta of the Clowns theory, but I keep wondering if maybe that’s a red herring. Ishida is known for that. What if he’s not a Clown but rather a member of V? But then, why the heck is he helping Aogiri? It was established in the first manga that V and Aogiri hate each other’s guts. Also what the heck is Furuta? Is he human or ghoul? IMHO, I think he’s a half-ghoul.

There’s a bunch of evidence that supports Furuta being a half-ghoul. First, he’s a CCG agent. He couldn’t get past the RC-gates without triggering them if he was full ghoul. That means he’s gotta have some human in him. However, there’s hints that he has ghoul in him too. First off, he knew Tsukiyama’s nickname from the Ghoul Restaurant. That hints that he was a member of the Restaurants. Seeing as the Restaurants were made for ghouls to eat people, if Furuta would be a member, that means he would be eating humans. Of course, this bit of evidence is a little weak. That takes me to my next bit of evidence: Touka.

During the first manga, we see Touka visiting Kamii University. While there, she sees a person that she mistakes as Kaneki. In the omake for TG:re vol 5 it is confirmed that the person Touka sees is Furuta. In that omake, Furuta muses that it is unusual for a ghoul to come talk to him. First off: how the heck does he know that Touka is a ghoul? She’s not flashing kakugan or anything, and Furuta has never seen her before. That means that there is something non-visual that tipped him off. Like scent. If he was part ghoul it is certainly possible that he could be able to smell that she was a ghoul. Sure, Kaneki had pretty crap senses, but not every partial-ghoul does (case in point, Saiko, who is shown to have superior senses). Also, how did Touka confuse Furuta with Kaneki? Yea, from behind they look similar, but think about it: Touka’s a ghoul. She doesn’t rely on sight alone to identify people. She relies on scent too to tell who is human and who is ghoul. It’s been pointed out many times that half-ghouls smell weird. They have a unique scent: neither human, nor ghoul, and yet at the same time, both. So for Touka to confuse Furuta as Kaneki, they would have to smell similar.

Of course, all of this could be debunked. The RC-gate thing can probably be circumvented if Furuta turns out to be a member of V. V would probably have a way of bypassing the scanners for full ghouls. As for the bit with Touka, heck, he could be full ghoul and be able to smell her, but she was downwind and couldn’t smell him back. On the flip side he could be full human and just be really good at figuring out who are the ghouls, kinda like Hide. Hell, I could be completely wrong about Kaneki being the OEK and instead its Furuta. *shrug* Only Ishida knows what’s going on.

Going back to chapter 61...Kaneki and the calendar. *sigh* I think I recall a few chapters ago them saying that it’s November in the mangaverse. I’m really hoping it’s November and not December. Because bad things happen during Kaneki’s birthday. Kaneki was with Jason during his 19th birthday. (Happy Birthday Kaneki! Here, I got you a gift, it’s a centipede in your ear!) To be fair, crazy things happen in November too. (Auction Raid, anyone?) In any case, the calendar is important, I think. Kaneki’s carefully crossing off the days: he’s waiting for something. (I’m hoping he’s counting down the days Hinami has left, so he knows the perfect time to come in an save her.) Also, we get to see his hand sans glove. It looks more like a kagune than an arm...That’s a bit unusual. Back when he was being tortured by Jason, Kaneki was able to regrow everything perfectly (minus some discoloration, that eventually went away). What changed?

Really, I think it’s mindset. Mind you, this is just my thoughts on it all. Eto mentioned a few chapters back that the shape of a ghoul’s kagune was determined by imagination, by their mindset. We see a few examples of this. Matsumae, Tsukiyama’s servant, thought of herself as Tsukiyama’s knight. Thus, she was able to mold her kagune into a sword and shield. Kaneki’s kakuja displays his fears and his pain: thus why it looks like a giant freaking centipede on nightmare fuel. And of course there’s Eto with her freaky old god kagune of doom. Much of a ghoul’s power is in the mind. It’s very possible that Kaneki’s hand regenerated oddly because he doesn’t think he’s human anymore. Heck, he might not even think of himself as a ghoul anymore. When he was being tortured by Jason, Kaneki struggled against his ghoul side. He held onto his humanity until the very end, until he finally broke and accepted his ghoul side. He didn’t accept that he was a ghoul until he had finished regenerating. And heck, even back then, Kaneki knew that not all ghouls were bad. But now, Kaneki knows he has chosen to walk the path of the monster, even more monstrous than simply being a ghoul. In his mind, he isn’t a ghoul or a human. He’s something worse.

Oh Kaneki and your suffering and self loathing. You seriously needed hugs ages ago. But we’ve gone beyond that. It’s going to take something extreme to pull Kaneki out of that deep well of pain. It’s going to be more painful before it ever gets better, like a festering wound that needs to be lanced.

Finally, one last thing: Did Arima just imply that the CCG/V knows that Kaneki is back? Does that mean that they’re letting him run lose?
