When she was a little girl, there was nothing Rebecca Welton wanted more than a dog.

She’d lie awake at night imagining chasing a dozen of them around her garden, curling up and reading to them, falling asleep cuddling them. She read every book on dog care, knew over 200 breeds by sight by the time she was 8 plus list the pros and cons of owning each of them, and practised throwing every day at lunchtime much to the bemusement of her classmates who kept a wide berth (only partially to avoid getting hit by a stray ball or arm).

Her parents said no.
