Laid In Scales Intro!

So, @drabbleitout and I have a new AU with our characters in a completely new world, and I want to share it on Tumblr, so I made a powerpoint for it to introduce it! It's tons of fun throwing our characters into different shenanigans and scenarios! And there are dragons in this one! Tagging: @ratracechronicler, @maple-writes, @pen-of-roses, and @grailfish!

Firstly, this is a fun AU I just want to share with Tumblr, it’s more for aesthetic than for accuracy, lol

Four different countries, and they have been at war for decades, maybe centuries

Each country has a champion, known as a dragon rider, who gets a dragon from one of the deities

These dragon riders get slit pupils, dragon tails, scales on their skin, fangs, and horns, and they can get elemental powers and weapons from their dragon when the dragon is in the “travel sized for your convenience” form (aka: a pendant)

Because these champions are one-person armies on their own, the countries won’t dare to invade a country that has a living dragon rider, so the majority of this war has been trying to assassinate dragon riders and invade in the in between, so there haven’t been tons of casualties, at least

At this moment, the lightning dragon rider is Ives, the fire dragon rider is Chess, the water dragon rider is Triel, and the ice dragon rider is Rune

There have been lots of changes recently with the fire dragon rider, but I will talk about that later

The deities are immortal dragons that are the living embodiments of the elements they represent, and if they die, the element they represent goes away, so you can imagine how bad that would be if they did die (hint, hint)

Luckily, it is very hard to kill the deities But some dumbass is still wanting to try it. End Description]

I will start with Chess, because it’s the most complicated

So, the fire dragon rider was assassinated about a year ago, and Chess’s lover, Naivi, was set to take the title next

But then, before she could, Naivi was assassinated as well

Chess had been studying a little bit, mostly because Naivi was studying, since Chess had been working towards becoming an elite guard for the dragon rider, so the leader of her country, Vyxis, elevated her to be a dragon rider, and the fire deity accepted her

She is woefully unprepared, but she is trying her hardest

Everyone (besides Vyxis and Ishnir) is judging her and saying she’s not worthy of this, and that she is a terrible dragon rider

And she believes them and is working herself too hard

Ives is the lightning dragon rider, and he is the one who has been a dragon rider for the longest

He’s the most aloof one, being prideful in his title and rude to others

Triel is the water dragon rider, and she seems to know too much about everything

She seems to always be at the dragon rider sanctuary (where all the dragon riders can go to be safe from fighting)

Rune is the ice dragon rider, which is ironic because she’s the warmest of the group

Probably team mom, making sure everyone has snacks and is sleeping enough. End Description]

Arcadia is led by Vyxis, and it is home to the fire dragon rider; Vyxis’s father had just been killed by the citizens a year ago because of discontent, and Vyxis took over and made things better and is now trying to pursue peace in this war, especially Etaran, who has a good leader too

Etaran is led by Acee, and it is home to the lightning dragon rider; Acee’s husband was not a good person, but since he died, she has taken over and has also made it better, especially giving women in marriage more power, since she had an arranged marriage and got hurt by it, she is also pursuing peace

Silisia is led by Firgo (his last name), and it is home to the water dragon rider; Firgo truly wants to continue the war and bloodshed, and he also is too interested in the dragon riders and using them as weapons

Ilica is led by Lexikon, and it is home to the ice dragon rider; Lexikon is pragmatic and has kept within the walls of his country to protect from assassins and threats, the country has become self sufficient. End Description]

Chess was just a regular human, and she and Naivi were childhood friends and now lovers; because Naivi was studying to become the dragon rider, Chess was working to become part of the elite guard for the dragon rider; when she was young, she was in an accident that caused her to lose her right arm and leg, and she worked hard to train and become one of the best shots in Arcadia; as she was going through the test to become an elite guard, Naivi was assassinated along with the whole elite guard, and when the news came, Chess was promoted to becoming the next dragon rider; she is facing scrutiny from all sides, and she is cracking under the pressure, not taking care of herself and working herself too hard; she never feels like she is enough; Artel is the name of her dragon

Naivi was the next in line to be the fire dragon rider, and she was Chess’s lover; she encouraged Chess through everything, and told her she was strong and good enough; and Chess helped her with studying and not getting too wrapped up in the books; they were the cutest, most saccharine couple ever. Ives is the lightning dragon rider, and he has been a dragon rider the longest; he is cold and proud and seems to only spend time with his dragon, Xoko; he seems to be getting less and less social, more willing to fight as time goes on; he especially sees Chess as a mistake of a dragon rider

Beau is the one set to take care of Xoko; he is a sweetheart and loves Xoko

Garnet and Hadrian are part of the elite guard for Ives; even though he fights well enough to not seem to need any guards, they stick around and make him begrudgingly socialize with them

Acee is the leader of Etaran who is seeking peace; she cares for Ives like he is her son, and she is concerned by how he’s been changing. End Description]

Triel is the water dragon rider, and she is crafty and a planner; she has actually come up with a plan to unite the dragon riders and stop them from killing each other, and the others have agreed to it; before that, she was captured by the leader of her country and tortured as he tried to break her so she would become his weapon; she refused, and her lover, Nesri, and her friend, Shine, helped rescue her; she now mostly stays at the sanctuary, but she hasn’t told the other dragon riders what happened to her because she doesn’t want them to worry

Nesri is Triel’s lover, and she technically joined the elite guard to protect Triel, but she has defected after what happened; she’s bubbly and loves to fight, mostly hand-to-hand; she wants to fight Firgo for what he did to Triel

Shine was also part of the elite guard, and a good friend to Triel; they’re deaf and a great engineer; they are the enabler of all of Triel’s plans, making machines to help her pull off even the wildest plans. End Description]

Rune is the water dragon rider; her country is very closed off from the others, but she sneaks out to go to the sanctuary to meet with the others; she is the sensible one of the dragon riders, making sure Ives and Triel take care of themselves when she can; she loves all the friends she’s made

Lexikon is the leader of Ilica; in order to protect his country, he has closed it off to the others no matter what; he is pragmatic and makes decisions for the good of his country, even if he has to do questionable things to achieve that

Becker and Fuchs are part of Rune’s elite guard; they’re childhood friends, and they became friends with Rune quickly; they care deeply for her and get worried about her easily

Makita cares for Rune’s dragon (name pending), and he’s happy to do so; he might have a secret second job, but don’t worry about it, he’s there to care for the dragon with a smile

Niles is a guard for Lexikon, and he definitely is also an assassin; he’s silently or not so silently judging you about everything you do. End Description]

Vyxis is the leader of Arcadia; he is a trans man who is cold and calculating and only cares about three people: his mother, his sister, and Ishnir, his wife (he might also care about Chess, but he won’t admit it any time soon); he thinks the war is sketchy, since he doesn’t even know how it started, so he’s determined to get to the bottom of it, and while he’s at it, he also wants to start peace talks, but Etaran is the only country who seems willing to talk

Ishnir is Vyxis’s wife and right hand person; she is quiet and blunt when she has to talk, and she makes sure all the small, everyday things are running smoothly; she doesn’t show much emotion unless she’s alone with Vyxis. End Description]

Firgo is the leader of Silisia; he is a power-hungry man who wants to use anyone with powers as a weapon; to that end, he tortured Triel to get her to agree to be his weapon, and when she refused and escaped, he has labelled her a traitor and is trying to convince the country that his daughter’s spouse, Eclipse, should be the dragon rider instead; the country is split in debate, especially because Triel’s dragon is still alive, so they’re not even sure that the deity will give them a new dragon

Ash is Firgo’s daughter, and she recognizes his terrible motives, and she wants to kill her parents so she can rule and fix the damage he caused; she is manipulative and crafty, having been taught that everyone will try to use her, so she should use them first

Eclipse is Ash’s spouse, and they are having the worst time; they were captured after their parents tried to defect from the country and were killed for it; they were forced to marry Ash, and they just want to kill Firgo and his wife in revenge. End Description]

Iggy is not an android in this one; he is Chess and Naivi’s childhood friend, and when he heard that Naivi was assassinated and Chess was elevated to be a dragon rider, he got to practicing so he can become a member of the elite guard so he can help protect Chess; he does succeed a little into the story, and he goes to Chess as soon as he can; he could fight Beau for the most sunshine boy, and I’m not sure who would win. Aston is a walking spoiler; so I can’t say much about him, but let’s just say he’s very old, and he knows why the war was started; he seems to know a lot about the dragon riders, and he wants to force his views on everyone; he’s an asshole who thinks he knows better than anyone else; everyone should try to stay away from him. Thank you!!!! TLL has been my baby since I was in elementary school (it used to be fun to do that math. now it just makes me feel old). It's a coming of age novel wrapped in a fantasy epic with lots of fantasy tropes, reimagined tropes, and random shit i thought would be neat. The main character is Lilliana "Lilli" Karington, a self-insert who has grown in age as I myself have grown, who spends the book speedrunning the reluctant hero to martyr pipeline. It's hard for her to not be my favorite because of how much of myself I have poured into her over the years. Buuuuuut to make myself pick a more true answer, there is a non-binary half-elf pirate named Bethanius who is always so fun and refreshing to write!

The Last Line: The Apostates

When the fortress of Dresden fell at the hand of the Brogaldans, reinforcements were only able to find thirteen survivors before they were forced to retreat. Thirteen out of eight hundred lived to see another day. Thirteen faced death. Thirteen chose to fight again.

Becker and twelve of his men are all that remains of his original regiment. Known as the Fallen Sons, DevilDogs, or merely the Apostates, there’s no doubt they are some of the most skilled men in the Anglian force; some of which are the only Anglians to have seen the Brogaldan High King and lived.

Reconnaissance

Goral Keubrich (38)– Keubrich is Thegn of Becker’s scouting division. Petite and narrow, Keubrich is easy to pick out of a crowd due to his messy bun of curls and combat goggles. Don’t let his kind and quiet personality fool you, he is a skilled strategist, enough so to be considered Becker’s right hand man post-Dresden. He came from a small settlement in the west that, after being attacked by Brogalda, was determined to do something to protect those who could not protect themselves. Skills: Stealth, tactic, stringed instruments.

Ichiro Hanari (27)– Hanari is a scout, a Shader, and extremely personal. Somewhat of a mystery to everyone else, he has a reputation as a ghost, known to assassinate an entire Brogaldan guard without detection. Easily irritated, somewhat melodramatic, Hanari is best left to himself. No one is entirely certain what his story is, only that he may have had family in the services. Skills: Stealth, Night vision, assassination, poetry.

Zeveriah “Zev” Exkorn (20) – Exkorn is one of the youngest left alive, second youngest in fact. A scout, he was originally the mascot of the regiment, but dedicated himself to fighting the Brogalda and remaining with those who experienced Dresden. For his skill in reading the land, remembering information, and endurance running, he tends to be loud, easily excitable, and constantly trying to prove himself. Found as an orphan by Becker, he eagerly wants to be an officer himself one day. Skills: Gambling, long distance running, photographic memory.

Rhys Pascal (40) – Pascal comes from a long line of military men. He has a brother in the Navy, somewhere, maybe. He has a little trouble remembering some things, but that’s alright. He’s a skilled sniper, the one who taught Becker how to shoot, actually. If he remembers correctly. Ready, aim, fire is all Rhys has really done and he’s not about to stop now. If he doesn’t cover these ankle biters, who will? Skills: Sharp shooter, story teller, part time therapist.

Infantry

Ruben Quinn (42)– Quinn is Thegn of Becker’s infantry division. You’re not going to find anyone like Quinn, no matter where you look. Loud, funny, and really good at bear hugs, this walking fortress is always making sure everyone is doing alright. Quinn is the leading combat operative, using his build to his advantage. But he isn’t all brawn. Quinn is trusted with ordering detachments where they need to be without the need of permission from Becker. Skills: Heavy Hitter, Team Mom, Tactician

Sture Wolfe (36)– Don’t let Wolfe out of your sight, for your own safety. Don’t take anything he offers you. And whatever you do, don’t ask what he’s working on. Wolfe is the infantry’s explosives engineer. He’s always coming up with some new way to turn Brogaldans into bits. A gambler, with more than just his life, he got into the military for the adrenaline rush –explosions came later. Skills: Chemist, Explosives, Gambler. 

Oren Nowak (33)– Nowak is a quiet, skilled fighter. He blames it on not being able to talk with a cigarette in his mouth, but he hasn’t spoken since Dresden. No one pries and he’s still friendly. A good teacher and listener, he has a knack for spotting mines before anyone else. You can usually find him at the front of the line, moseying through the weeds. Skills: Hand-to-hand, Mine Detection, Sewing.

Evrim Balcan (35) – Balcan knows all there is to know about different weapons, even weapons that existed before the bombs fell. He can tell you all about the satellites, the old wars, what issue of blade you’re holding. A bit of a history buff, he can’t really remember a life before the military. It gave him a good education and he loves showing off his sword work. He especially likes Nowak, and there’s a rumor they can read each other’s minds. Skills: Sword fighting, History, Weapon Knowledge

Cavalry

Orval Thorn (55) – Thorn is Thegn of Becker’s Cavalry division. He knows the ins and outs of anything man has figured out how to put a saddle on. Originally a farmer, Thorn is one of the few remaining Anglian soldiers who had a wife. He remembers women. Was sure he was going to have a daughter. Was working in the fields when he lost them. His concern now is taking down as many Brogaldans as he can in this lifetime. If you aren’t an Apostate, don’t expect to get anything out of him. Skills: Plant knowledge, Equestrian Care, horseback combat.

Wyatt Gaxiola (36)– Gaxiola is the most laid back person you will ever meet. Napping whenever he gets the chance, with horses any other time, he’ll always greet you with a wide smile. Somewhat shy, he does tend to like the company of horses more than people, but in times like these, who can blame him? Fearless on horseback and a determined fighter, he’s a force to be reckoned with. Skills: Equestrian Care, Pole Weapons, Cooking.

Matthew McCarthy (30) – Need to break your own horse? Have no clue what you’re doing? McCarthy is the guy you’re looking for. Always ready with a joke, with an infectious laugh, McCarthy steals the show as soon as he walks in the room. But he isn’t for everyone. Stable-hand turned soldier he’s one of the more unruly apostates. One of the more serious injured in Dresden, McCarthy lost a hand, and most feeling in his legs, but he refuses to give up the fight. Skills: Sharp shooting, Wrangling, Dad Jokes.

Aidan Burel (27) – Aidan is always picking fights, and blames it on McCarthy. They’re both guilty. A horse racer, trick rider, known for stealing the enemies mounts right out from under them, Burel is a spitfire who listens to no one. No one except Becker. If there’s someone trash talking the Apostates, Burel can hear them from a mile away, and he’s already on his way. New to the military, and the last remaining of triplets, these devildogs are his new family. Skills: Trick Riding, Off Key Singing, Fighting –literally anyone and anything.
