Who Is Caught Up On Tears of the Desert Weekly?
For anyone who doesn’t know, the book Tears of the Desert: A Memoir of Survival in Darfur, has a weekly read-a-chapter-subscription based reading going on right now and I just read the latest chapter (as of 5/7/2023) and would love to talk to someone else about it. Is there a discord or group chat or anything where people are talking about it? Maybe a group with resources on how to help the refugee camps that sprung from the genocide?
A big, BIG recommendation for people who like this kind of weekly reading thing. The book is extremely well written and is as heart wrenching as it is eye opening. As the title suggests, it focuses on the author’s experience with the genocide that happened in Darfur (and there’s still violence happening there today, it’s not just over and done with) and honestly I had no idea about any of this going into it. The reader gets to watch her grow up with her family, see her go to school and eventually become a doctor before total violence breaks out and she has to leave the country for her own safety - which is the part I’m up to now. I’ll make another post with the subscription link and a bunch of links for historical context of the Darfur genocide, if anyone is interested!
