I'm glad a lot of y'all are liking the food quilt. It's just at a standstill until I can get new sashing fabric for between the placemat blocks. I had picked up some budget fat quarters in a nice blue plaid napkin like print but when I went to cut them into strips I discovered there''s no way to get the print to line up strait.

I want something that looks like napkins or place mats, whaat's around the food is a basket print, but it needs a strong primary blue and maybe some green and yellow to bring out and tie all the food together. The final boarder is red table cloth checks and ants.

Yup, when I was first buying food prints for this I found tablecloth checks and realistic looking ants. With the idea of adding some loose applique food pieces here and there it needs ants.

And I can't be the only person reading this who has seen Polyester. I think Polyester has the picnic in it.

But still, the quilt has come to a grinding halt until I can fins napkins for it and I know I don't have enough of anything. And it has to have the basket placemats broken up a bit but I only have so many ants and want them for the final boarder.

Cotton or Polycotton Fabric

So, what are the differences between 100% cotton and poly-cotton blend fabrics? To start with, a poly-cotton blend is just what its name suggests: a fabric that is made up of cotton and polyester fibers. What are the advantages and disadvantages of cotton?

100% cotton is a fully breathable fabric, which means that it can be cooler to wear in hot conditions. However, as the thickness increases, the breathability decreases. 100% cotton tends to rip and wear out easily, depending on the weave. Cotton canvas is a very durable and abrasion-resistant fabric, but it is very thick and heavy. In regards to safety, cotton fibers that have not been treated for fire resistance will tend to burn away where polyester will melt. As a natural fiber, 100% cotton garments also tend to be a bit more expensive than their synthetic counterparts.

Polyester has an equal number of advantages and disadvantages as cotton

Polyester does not breathe and has a tendency to stick to the skin once perspiration begins. In regard to durability, polyester is a more elastic fiber and therefore tends to be tear resistant. However, it does not tend to be as abrasion-resistant as cotton canvas. As polyester is not dependent upon the forces of nature for a successful harvest, it is usually considerably cheaper than 100% cotton.

A fabric made from a polycotton blend combines the strengths of the two fibers. Polycotton garments are breathable, tear-resistant, and can be fashioned into abrasion-resistant fabrics, like canvas. While not as inexpensive as pure polyester, polycotton blends do tend to cost less than comparable garments made of 100% cotton and they provide much more comfort. The previously mentioned 65/35 blend of cotton and polyester is the most popular for work garments, particularly because of price, durability and a larger color selection is available for purchase. When shopping for work garments, the choice between 100% cotton and polycotton blends depends largely on the work environment and personal preference. If employees work indoors around machinery, the tear-resistance of polycotton may be favorable. DEB Basics

One fun part of the Dîner en Blanc Experience is curating the basic elements you will need for a successful al fresco dinner. If this is your first Dîner en Blanc you may have to invest a little money, but if you choose wisely, you’ll be able to repurpose these items for other occasions and for future iterations of Dîner en Blanc.

I’ll post links below to Amazon for most of these items so you have an idea of the specs and costs. You can also purchase them locally from brick and mortar stores like IKEA, Home Depot, Target, Kmart, Crate & Barrel, CB2, Pier 1, and Fishs Eddy. You may already own most of these elements; to keep costs down, reach out to your friends and borrow a few.

I’ll mark which elements are required, which are practical, and which are frills.

Handcart • Practical

This handcart weighs only 7 pounds but can safely carry up to 150 pounds (don’t bring 150 pounds of elements, its too much!). It folds up into self and will fit under or beside your table.

If you pare your elements to a bare minimum, you can easily carry them, but our event is set in July and chances are that it’s going to be hot, so save the sweating for the dance floor.

Members have also used suitcases, luggage carts, metal shopping carts, and wagons. Choose wisely as you and your Guest will have to personally transport these items from the Departure Location to the Secret Location.

Note:  Laundry carts are likely able to fit under your table and are easier to fit more in, but are sometimes tricky for just a couple to fit under one table.

Bungee Cords • Practical

These are highly effective at securing your elements to the handcart.

Table • Required

A table falling within 28” and 30” squared is a required element. Roll up tables are your best option as they fit neatly into a yoga mat sized carrying bag, have a shoulder strap, and weigh just over 8 pounds. The only drawback are the crossbars that stabilize the table -- it may be difficult to get your knees underneath them. 

Many Members use card tables that have legs that fold in. These meet the requirement, but they are also heavy to carry and cumbersome to roll on a handcart. With all the walking you may do, you should go as light as you possibly can.

Make sure you order the right size.  A friend showed up with a very mini-portable version to Lincoln Square...we managed, but it was definitely a “WTF” moment!

Please note that you’ll have to pick up and drop off the rentals at their warehouses.

If you need a table, order/buy one now as you won’t be able to find a lightweight one in the city if you wait until the event week to get one. You don’t want to end up driving to Connecticut or southern New Jersey to pick up a table that you can readily obtain today.

Chairs • Required

You can’t beat IKEA’s Gunde chairs for value and overall practicality. They weigh just under 4 pounds, are easy to secure onto a handcart with bungee cords, or you can even carry them if you utilize shoulder straps. They come in white, so you’re all set. If your chairs aren't white chairs you can always paint them or use slip covers to get them to standard.

Slip Covers • Frills

You can purchase a multipack at a nominal cost at most party stores or on Amazon.

Shoulder Straps • Practical

If you forego using a handcart, shoulder straps may be utilized to carry your chairs as you would a tote or bag.

Tablecloth & Napkins • Required

There are many tablecloth and napkin options out there but a best practice is to pick up fairly inexpensive polyester ones that are easy to machine wash or, given their cost, toss at the end of the night. To cover your table to the ground choose one that is 85” to 90” squared. Your carts, bags, and excess items will be stored out of site underneath your table.

A white pristine cloth napkin is the most iconic item at a Dîner en Blanc. You’ll know it’s time to eat when the 5,000 attendees start waving their napkins in the air.

Dishware, Glassware, & Silverware • Required

Your dishes should be white or clear glass. If they have accents, they should be minimal. You may bring a dish for every course or just bring two plates and wipe them clean with a wet nap between courses.

Your glasses should be clear glass or white. Accents should be minimal. You may also want to limit yourself to two glasses, one for wine or champagne and one for water or soft drinks.

Your silverware does not have to be white; Silver or any natural metallic color will suffice.

Most of us don’t have to go any further than our kitchen to pull together two complete sets of dinnerware, but you can purchase individual settings at Crate & Barrel, CB2, and most home stores. No disposable paper, plastic or polystyrene foam, please and thank you.

Garbage Bag • Required

Bring a white garbage bag for all of your refuse. A dumpster will be on site for your use. Leave the site as clean as you found it. Also bring wet naps. They’ll come in handy.

Frills

Where you take your set-up from there is up to you. I’ve seen Members use: napkin rings, place mats, charger plates, salt and pepper shakers, battery powered tea lights, ice buckets, and wine stoppers for leftover wine.

I am so glad to see this article. I have been dealing with this weird touch and feel of textures. This has been going the past 2 years and now I am in 8th grade and it has gotten worse. I can't touch certain leggings, hockey gloves, the book covers that are fabric, certain tables, chalkboards, sweaters, thin leggings, insides of purses, coats, and certain clothes. Sometimes I will be walking and I can touch carpet. I always spas out whenever I feel any of the textures I listed. My body forces me to touch them and I can't stand it. I get this super gross and weird feeling in my mouth and have to move super weird. I also have to hold my hands because my fingertips feel soooo gross. People always think its weird when I can't touch certain things. It has gotten to the point where I have to have someone else get my book with the fabric book cover on it. I can't even look at the leggings that wear everyday. I just am cringing writing this because I can't stand it. I want this so end so my fingers don't feel like this. Someone please help.

But Ive never thought about some of the weird habits/issues I have with some things until someone told me about synesthesia (which sounds interesting, but isn't my deal) which eventually led me here. Most of my things are about touch, usually textures. When it comes to eating any type of soggy bread is a big no-no, I usually avoid sandwiches/subs and burgers because some kind of sauce or oil could have soaked into the bread. Even touching it will make me gag let alone putting it in my mouth, which then I wouldn't even be able to make myself swallow the food. Bread or croutons dipped in soup, cookies dipped in milk type things absolutely gross me out just by looking at them because ill feel/imagine the texture in my mouth. Cant do 'soft chunks' of foods: chunks in salsa or pasta sauces with tomato, onion etc chunks. Mushrooms raw or cooked, cooked onion is the worst feeling after the soggy bread... I cannot stand wet hair, it grosses me out to touch or to feel my hair being touched by someone else while wet. Anything that feels rough/dry/cracked or bumpy I cannot help but pick at/rub over constantly. I avoid some types of... dry feeling fabrics? It feels uncomfortable to touch softer paper napkins/kleenex and after using them I have to rub my fingers together or on something else to get rid of the feeling. Sometimes I get the feeling in my mouth as if i was chewing on napkin, grinding it between my teeth... and that's just not a pleasant feeling haha. Takes forever to get rid of the sensation. Whispy, fluffy types fabrics, like cotton balls or cotton stuffing, those foam mats you put over your mattress are all veryyyy unpleasant. Ugh... there are so many of these little things I could never type them all, but Im glad to see that some people here have mentioned similar feelings because my friends usually think Im nuts if I mention any of these little annoyances/habits! :)

I'm so glad to have found this page and read all your comments, it's great to know I'm not the only one to feel this way. I just found out the name of this today from a friend, when I talked about how much I hate touching fabrics like polyester, fur or fabrics with patterns that you can feel over it. It's tolerable if it's my hands or fingers, but not if my nails are touching it which is hard to avoid since my nails are on my fingers. Or if it's my toenails. If I accidentally cut my nails too short and the fabric touches my nail bed, that feeling is even worse, it makes my skin crawl all overs my arms and back. I just have to rub my nails aganist a hard wooden surface to remove the feeling. It's a little weird since it only seems to be an issue for my nails. But it's nice to know I'm not the only one to be bothered by certain fabrics.

Future of Nonwoven Fabrics

Introduction

Usually people consider textile fabrics as the common categorization such as woven, knitted, braided or tufted constructions. They commonly abandon nonwoven fabrics form the textile group. In the conventional fabric, the fibre is first made into yarns; on the other hand, nonwovens are manufactured sheets or webs directionally or randomly orientated fibres, bonded through resistance, solidity or sticking together into a fabric. The demands for fabrics have increased sharply. Conventional textiles are not able to meet the production cost and higher cost of upgradation along with demanding consumers in new fields of consumption. With better customization of characteristics into the fabric and appropriateness to certain end uses being advantages, nonwovens have emerged rapidly as the fabrics of the future. Nonwoven fabrics presents many advantages over conventional fabrics, the clearest benefit is cost savings. In recent couple of years the nonwoven industry has emerged at a rapid speed, offering a huge range of products to several diversified fields. Conversely, nonwoven fabrics hold some natural characteristics, which led them to be counted for non-usable in certain applications. At present, many research and development has been conducted on enhancing the characteristics of nonwoven fabrics. Nonwovens are also entering into some astonishing fields, with making its mark in fashion apparel also. Currently, three fibers lead the worldwide market:

 Polypropylene (synthetic  63 percent)  Polyester (synthetic  23 percent)  Cellulosic staple fiber (natural-based 8 percent)

Manufacturing Process To manufacture a nonwoven fabric, first a web is made, and then it is tied (bonded together) to give strength. Usually, Nonwoven fabrics are made from two processes, a one-step or two-step. One-step process: In this process, the formation of web and bonding is conducted continuously. The processes, spunbond and melt blown are considered under one-step.

Spunbond process: The thermoplastic fibers are extruded via a spinneret, and then is it spread on a conveyor belt to make a web. Following the process, the web is bonded by passing it through two calendar rollers. Melt blown process: The thermoplastic fibers are driven onto a collector screen to make a web. The combination of fibers fixing and snaring, results bonding.

Two-step process: A web is made and bonded via another process. The web could be made by three different methods, dry laid, air laid and wet laid. These three words refer the instrumentation, which leads the fibers into a web or sheet. Most webs are very delicate, and to strengthen them bonding is done, by many mean like needle-punching, applying adhesive, thermal exposure, stitch-bonding or hydro-entanglement (spunlace).

Application of Nonwoven Non-woven fabrics made from fibers have a great application base all over the world. Nonwovens have extended the applications of textiles to a wide spectrum of industrial and end-consumer areas, such as medicine, personal care, hygiene and household uses. Their applications are as follows:
