Mina, When Girlhood Is A Stab Wound
Tumblr media
I finished Mina by Kim Sagwa, translated by Bruce Fulton and Ju-Chan Fulton, earlier last week.
Mina is a furious, ferine ferocity of a knife, oozing a primeval sweetness, blood cradling blood, girlhood a pungent milk on your thighs, in your dreams. Mina and Crystal, a pair of unripe bodies and souls, orbit, mirror, smother each other whilst they go through high school, cram school, private tutoring, dating, drinking, smoking, not sleeping, trying to stay sane, trying to stay numb, suffocated but together. That is, until something happens, severing their world, their bond, their interlinked consciousness. Upon drifting apart, her heart dry and sterile, Crystal grows obsessive; she cannot fathom why Mina finds life unbearable and dizzying. Crystal is enraged that Mina can be so affected by what seems to her a minuscule happening, subsequently enraged that she can be this enraged about Mina, the cycle blooming into petals of monstrosity. Eventually, Crystal takes it upon herself to prove to Mina that life cannot injure her, cannot injure them.
This book goes dark, brutal, and graphic; please, please take care of yourself & check the content/trigger warnings. If I were to do a book math, this book feels like Boy Parts by Eliza Clark meets Astral Season, Beastly Season by Tahi Saihate meets The Diving Pool by Yōko Ogawa (specifically the first story).
I think this book is meant to be unsubtle, loud, bleeding in shrieks, drowning you in nausea. A lot of this book is in dialogue, and a lot of the book ends up being about Crystal, not Mina. I thought that was an interesting angle, one that I can go on and on about. I am glad to have read the book, gladder that I encounter the book now and not sometime years ago, when the soreness of coming-of-age is still acute and raw, the rage still newborn. Once again, please take care of yourself if you ever decide to pick up this book.
I also have this post up on Instagram, if you'd like to check.

Web

I like it.

What I read in 2021 🍊 I made an effort to focus on indie publishers and authors in translation interspersed with a few classics + popular works
My favorites:
Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge
Blockchain Chicken Farm by Xiaowei Wang
Tower by Bae Myung-Hoon
The Twilight Zone by Nona Fernandez
Love in the Big City by Sang Young Park
Astral Season, Beastly Season by Tahi Saihate
Some fun ones:
Escapes by Daniel Tunnard
The Plotters by Un-Su Kim
And what I keep thinking about:
Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Vegetarian by Han Kang
To the Warm Horizon by Choi Jin-Young
The Membranes by Chi Ta-Wei
But I do recommend every book, save for Subprime Attention Crisis which was interesting but should have been essay length for the amount of info it reiterated to reach book length
