#HARPERSMOVIECOLLECTION
2023
I watched Tales From The Gimli Hospital (1988)
Since watching The Saddest Music In The World I've been in a Guy Maddin mood. So, I decided to go back to his first feature.
Two men afflicted during an epidemic form a bond in the Gimli hospital, only for one to envy the other and for a hatred to grow as secrets are revealed.
Guy Maddin loves classic film styles. Here in his first feature he clearly marks the path he'll go down, by taking that love of film and a love of folktales to create his own incredible style.
Maddin often defies genre by placing his audience within a dream, in which things can be at once funny, dramatic and horrific. He uses the old techniques to craft these dreams beautifully. The independence of Maddin's films often shines through, but in the best way. The fake scars and blood here are somehow more effective than the most well made special effects. A reminder that, it's all in the use of what one has and their talent that makes great films, not budget.
While watching, this was fast becoming my favorite of the Guy Maddin films I've seen. It uses so very little to create a wonderful and melancholy tale of horror and drama. It perfectly exemplifies what I love about this director.
His style can make it seem as if his characters and story are playing second fiddle, but the truth is that Maddin has found a way to connect to us in each of his films. His style is simply the way in which he fascinates us. In this film I couldn't help but be fascinated by the many disturbing images and his absolute mastery of old world filmmaking. It almost made me wish these techniques hadn't been lost to time and technology, and were used more often. But, I also connected to the story of lost love, rejection and jealousy. Connecting maybe even to the things I don't quite like about myself.
This is one I really enjoyed on many levels, but unless you're a film fan, and I do mean a FILM FAN, you're not going to be interested. If your favorite movies are In the MCU or the Hunger Games, you're not going to be interested. This is for fans of filmmaking from top to bottom, from silent on up. So, if you're like me, you'll love it.
It's a great first feature from a great filmmaker.

Outside of his Dracula, a lot of his movies have been hearsay and in my peripheral, and I’m finally entering my Guy Maddin era. Sorry y’all.
