How to Do My Summer Skincare Routine
This article may contain affiliate links. See our Disclosure for more information.
Summer skincare isn't just about sun protection.
For me, it's usually one of the most challenging seasons because I tend to break out more, especially near my hairline (thank you, sweat!).
I also get a lot of pigmentation on the sides of my cheeks—even WITH sunscreen.

Thanks for watching!
And of course, it's always hard finding the right products that keep you hydrated and protected, without looking like an oil slick.
That's why this might just be my best summer skincare routine yet!
Not to jinx anything, but so far using these products, my skin has stayed surprisingly clear, even and only slightly dewy, instead of shiny. (I'm not even wearing powder in this photo, and in past summers I wouldn't be able to get away with that!)
Keep reading to find out my skincare goals this season, and everything I'm using right now. And check out my previous routines for spring, winter and fall if you missed them!
My Summer Skincare Goals
Tumblr media
My summer skincare goals include protecting my skin from UV and preventing pigmentation and breakouts.

Thanks for watching!
Alright, here's the lowdown on my skin priorities right now!
Sun protection: The sun is said to be responsible for 80 percent of skin aging, so obviously I'm all about the SPF at the moment. I can remember when I first started doing these mineral sunscreen guides, there were only a handful of high-zinc formulas to choose from, and most were quite heavy and occlusive. Now, there are a good number of lightweight options—so I think that's one reason why my skin is behaving better!
Fading and preventing pigmentation: In the spring, I was battling a serious case of post-acne hyperpigmentation after some Drunk Elephant products made me break out BADLY. That has mostly faded now, although I'm still working on it. At the same time, I'm being diligent about preventing new pigmentation. Sunscreen is half the battle, but so are the right actives. Niacinamide is what works the best for me, and I consider it to be an anti-aging treatment as well.
Preventing breakouts: Like I said, my skin has been unusually clear lately, thank God. But if I learned anything from my Drunk Elephant experience, it was not to get too cocky about that! So I'm keeping up my twice-daily acid routine. I think the niacinamide treatments I'm using right now are also making a difference, along with the lighter SPF and some new toners.
Confession: I fell off the wagon this summer with respect to all my gadgets (admittedly, I went a little wild with them in the spring!). I've just been TOO busy for anything more than an occasional Red Light Man treatment. But, I'm going to get back into using my ZIIP when I have some downtime in August (and yes, I plan to do a review). The microneedling I'm going to save for the fall, as you're not meant to do it after sun exposure.
Since I took you through my skin makeup last time, I won't bore you with that again here (I'm using pretty much the same things anyway).
As always, the majority of these products were purchased by me, and you can see how I scrutinize ingredients lists in this tutorial.
My Morning Skincare Routine
1. Cleanser:
Tumblr media
Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser
My morning cleanser right now is Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser, which I was also using in the spring. This has become one of my favourite gel cleansers—it's sulfate-free, and I don't find it drying at all. (But it might be not be moisturizing enough for dry skin, so I think it's best if you are normal to oily.) While I'm only using it in the mornings, you could also use it at night as the second step in a double cleanse.
I'm also still using the S.W. Basics Cleanser on a Shiseido Facial Cotton on days when I'm not hopping in the shower right away. It's a three-ingredient cleansing water that's great for a quick, gentle cleanse.
2. BHA:
Tumblr media
COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid
What a surprise, COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid is next! I can't see myself EVER giving up this beta-hydroxy acid treatment that I've been using since 2017. As I explained in this review, it treats and prevents breakouts, exfoliates and brightens your skin, fades pigmentation and more. The texture is a liquid gel, and I use my fingers to smooth a generous layer all over my face (excluding the lips and eye area).
3. Serum:
Tumblr media
GEORGANIC Propolis Care Acne Serum
Then I wait about 20 minutes or so to give the BHA time to work before I apply the GEORGANIC Propolis Care Acne Serum. Ignore the name, because this serum is not just going to help acne-prone skin, but also dry or sensitive skin and pigmentation.
First of all, it's got 78 percent Centella Asiatica extract, which is an Asian herb that both moisturizes and strengthens the skin barrier. It also has 10 percent propolis (bee "glue"), which soothes and reduces inflammation, and two percent niacinamide, which has all of these benefits (including brightening). So it's doing a lot more than other serums—and with fewer ingredients! It has a lightweight texture and is highly unlikely to irritate you or break you out.
4. Moisturizer:
Tumblr media
Truly Organic Glass Skin Facial Serum
In summers past, I usually skipped this step and went straight from serum to sunscreen, since moisturizer would make me too greasy. This time, I've been experimenting with Truly Organic Glass Skin Facial Serum, and it's not having that effect at all! (The sunscreen I'm using is lighter, too, but more on that in a second.)
It's interesting that the brand is calling this a serum, because the texture is definitely a cream. It becomes more fluid once you spread it on your skin, so maybe that's why? Anyway, I absolutely love it. Who knew you could make a lightweight but nourishing cream out of soy lecithin, xanthan gum, aloe vera, coconut oil, cocoa butter and vitamin E?!
5. Eye Cream:
Tumblr media
Truly Organic Doll Face Face Cream
Instead of eye cream, I'm using Truly Organic Doll Face Face Cream right now. (I swear, this brand is one of my BEST discoveries this year!) Lately, I've been getting some irritation in my eye area, probably from some makeup I've been using, so I wanted to try a very basic cream that wouldn't cause any more issues. I find that I can't use a lot of eye creams because their ingredients lists are too complex, with too many potential irritants.
Like the Glass Skin Serum, this cream has a very simple, natural ingredients list—in fact, the ingredients are almost the same. Doll Face, however, has a slightly thicker texture and a pink tint (maybe from the seaweed extract?). It's perfect as an eye cream, and I also wouldn't hesitate to use it as a face cream, which I'll be doing once it gets colder. (I've already tested it all over my face, and it doesn't break me out.) Truly obsessed with this brand!
6. Sunscreen:
Tumblr media
Ava Isa Pure Untinted Ultra Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen
For my mineral sunscreen this season, I've got a brand new tube of Ava Isa Pure Untinted Ultra Matte SPF 45 Sunscreen, which the company recently tweaked to create a creamier texture. (There's also a tinted version, by the way, and you can now find them in the US at Credo Beauty!) This is such a great SPF for anyone who hates heavy, greasy sunscreens. It's so light on the skin, and the protection from UVA rays (the aging type of rays) is incredible.
I JUST received a PR sample of the new REN Clean Screen Mattifying Face Sunscreen SPF 30, so I'm going to be adding that to the rotation, too. It's not available yet here in Canada, but you can find it in the US and UK. You can learn more about all my sunscreen picks in this year's mineral sunscreen guide!
7. SPF Lip Balm:
Tumblr media
COOLA Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30
As I mentioned in my recent review, COOLA Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30 is my top pick for an SPF lip balm. You're getting all-mineral protection in a moisturizing, water-resistant formula. It comes in a bunch of different tints—see my swatches here. My favourite is the coral shade called Tan Line.
I'm not wearing this in the photo above, though! (Oops!) That's Glossier Generation G in Crush with some Lanolips 101 Ointment on top.
8. Face Mists:
Tumblr media
Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist, BIOeffect OSA Water Mist and Pai Rice Plant & Rosemary BioAffinity Skin Tonic
My last step in the morning (and throughout the day, actually) is face mist. I'm BIG on face mists in the summer. Tatcha The Satin Skin Mist is my latest purchase, a "liquid powder" that you shake and then spray on to mattify your skin. I've been experimenting with this instead of regular face powder, and it does a good job of taking away shine without making my skin look dry or dull.
I also like BIOeffect OSA Water Mist, which I was using last summer, too. This one is also slightly mattifying thanks to the silica, and hydrating thanks to the glycerin and hyaluronic acid. The packaging is great to pop in your handbag.
And I just bought another Pai Rice Plant & Rosemary BioAffinity Skin Tonic, which I used two or three years ago and loved. This one is super juicy and refreshing, and is specifically formulated to help balance combo skin.
My Nighttime Skincare Routine
1. Makeup Remover:
Tumblr media
Darphin Azahar Cleansing Micellar Water
Moving on to evening... my first step is always micellar water, and I decided to try out another one to share with you, the Darphin Azahar Cleansing Micellar Water. If you feel like splurging, it does the job, with 94 percent natural ingredients (although BIOeffect's formula is technically more "clean"). It doesn't cause any irritation for me, but I'm also rinsing it off with the next step.
2. Cleanser:
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Purifying Face Wash
There's nothing like a foaming face wash in the summer to get off all the sweat and grime that's been seeping into your pores all day—am I right? I finally got around to trying Indie Lee Purifying Face Wash, which I bought a while back but somehow forgot about (I have way too many cleansers!).
This has a unique jelly texture that turns into a light creamy foam once you massage it over wet skin. Honestly, it's great (just like ALL the cleansers from this brand). It's gentle, sulfate-free and doesn't leave my skin feeling tight. Keep in mind that it's more for oily and combo skin, though. If you are dry, I think the Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser is better for you.
3. Cleansing Brush:
Tumblr media
Foreo Luna 2 for Combination Skin
As usual, I pair my cleanser with the Foreo Luna 2 for Combination Skin, my favourite gentle cleansing brush. Summer is when I use this puppy the most, since sunscreens have a tendency to clog pores and I'm paranoid of leaving any traces on my skin.
By the way, a new version of this brush has just come out, the Luna 3. The main difference is that there's now an app, so you can customize the treatment intensity with your phone. I'm not sure if they are discontinuing the older one but I hope not! Personally, I feel like I don't need the 3 as the 2 already works perfectly.
4. Toner:
Tumblr media
Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner and Pyunkang Yul Acne Toner
In the spring, I mentioned that I've started to incorporate a toner step in the evenings, after cleansing and before my acid. I was inspired by NYC facialist Christine Chin, who believes that skipping toner is the number one mistake most people make! My problem was finding the RIGHT toner. Most toners I've tried don't play well with the COSRX BHA for some reason, and my skin goes red, hot and flushed when I use them together. Then I got the idea to try Lotion P50 as my toner, and it didn't do that!
However, Lotion P50 isn't the most accessible product, so I wanted to find some other options I could recommend to you guys. Thank goodness for K-beauty. I found two more toners that are compatible with acids! Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner contains soothing aloe vera, hydrating snail mucin and 0.5 percent salicylic acid. Pyunkang Yul Acne Toner has willow bark extract (a natural BHA), niacinamide and Centella Asiatica extract. They're both quite cheap!
5. BHA:
Tumblr media
COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid
After the toner, I apply COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, same as the morning. In past routines, you might remember me using it only in the mornings, with another salicylic acid treatment at night. But since the spring, I've stuck with this twice a day, and I really notice that my skin is always clear now. Like, I can be walking around all day sweating, or going through PMS time, and not even have ONE pimple. This stuff is GOLD!
6. Serum:
Tumblr media
SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense
As much as I love A313 (reviewed here), I'm taking a little break from retinoids for the next month or so. One, because I finished the tube and had to order another, and two, because I plan to be spending a lot of time outside in August. This paper talks about retinoids and phototoxicity, so I just like to be careful!
Instead, I'm applying SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense, which was also in my spring routine. I use this about 20 minutes after the acid. It has five percent niacinamide, which acts as an antioxidant and will help me combat any sun-induced pigmentation. There are also tons of studies about niacinamide's ability to repair radiation-induced DNA damage (see here for a few). Yes, I am obsessed with niacinamide and prefer it to vitamin C!
7. Lash Serum:
Tumblr media
neuLASH Lash Enhancing Serum
In my last few routines, I've forgotten to include lash serum, so I wanted to let you know that I've been using neuLASH Lash Enhancing Serum for a while now. You just paint this along your upper lash lines, and it helps strengthen your lashes so that they hang around longer (and therefore look thicker). Coming from Latisse, I think this has helped me maintain those results!
8. Eye Cream:
Tumblr media
Truly Organic Doll Face Face Cream
Again, my "eye cream" right now is Truly Organic Doll Face Face Cream. No, it doesn't have any anti-aging ingredients, but it's keeping my eye area nice and hydrated. I wish more brands would take a cue from this company's ultra-simple formulas! With eye creams especially, the fewer ingredients, the better.
9. Lip Balm:
Tumblr media
Lanolips 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm
As always, my last step is some lanolin lip balm. All that's in Lanolips 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm is medical-grade lanolin, which I think is the best thing for healing dry lips. Ever since I got onto this stuff, I NEVER experience chapping.
For a cheaper (but less cute) option, Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream is the same thing!
Conclusion
Tumblr media
My summer skincare products from Pai, Benton, Darphin, Indie Lee, Ava Isa, Pyunkang Yul, Youth to the People, GEORGANIC, Tatcha, SkinCeuticals, BIOeffect and Truly Organic.
I hope you enjoyed reading about this routine!
Even though I'd describe my skin as combination, I think a lot of these products would work for drier skin than mine, too. I can't say enough good things about Truly Organic in particular. The fact that they can make such incredible creams without a long list of weird synthetic ingredients is just amazing to me!
I hope you also check out GEORGANIC, because that's another one I'd recommend for ALL skin. It's a K-beauty brand, by the way (as are COSRX, Benton and Pyunkang Yul). I'm a bit late to the party but I'm working on a Korean "clean skincare" guide to share with you soon. Stay tuned!

Test Drives—a Revisit: Veil Cosmetics vs. E.L.F. Cosmetics
Tumblr media
Alright I’m back and actually a little proud of myself that I was able to do a followup to last week’s head to head comparison post this quickly! In last week’s Test Drives post, I focused on a previous claim I made about Veil Cosmetics’ AutoMatte mattifying primer balm being a better dupe to Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas than the current fan favorite dupe, E.L.F. Cosmetics’ Poreless Putty Primer. Although the Automatte wasn’t a total dupe, I thought it held its own pretty well and still feel it’s a better option over the Poreless Putty Primer.
Tumblr media
In today’s post, I’m doing a split face with E.L.F.’s primer on my left (your right) and Veil Cosmetics on my right (your left). To be 100% honest, today’s head-to-head was one of the weirdest because the two primers photograph very differently than how they looked to the naked eye IRL. And the differences between the two start from the moment of application.
Tumblr media
Mattifying & Blurring
Just like I mentioned last week, I love that Veil is a mattifying balm so that it stops the risk of any shine from the moment you begin applying makeup.  And it offers a great blur effect, giving you this soft focus kind of look—even if you wear it without any makeup. But the only place where it was a little weak compared to Tatcha was in its ability to minimize fine lines specifically in my under eye area. While they didn’t look massive or magnified, Tatcha hands down won in completely hiding under eye fine lines.
E.L.F.’s primer applies sort of damp and takes a bit of time to dry down. But even once it’s “set”, your face still looks somewhat shiny or maybe dewy is a better word choice here. While this isn’t a deal breaker, it’s very noticeable when the other half of your face is clearly matte with no shine. So, as far as I could tell, I wasn’t seeing any mattifying or blurring from the E.L.F. side.
Tumblr media
Minimizing Fine Lines
Shininess aside, the fine lines issue is where things got a bit weird. The entire time I was applying my makeup, I could clearly see the fine lines in my under eye area on my left side with the Poreless Putty Primer. It felt like they were magnified while the right side that had the Automatte still looked blurred and with fine lines to a minimum.
Tumblr media
And even after I finished applying, when I look at myself in the mirror, I still see more lines in my under eye area on the E.L.F. side than the Veil side. But, when I took pictures, you see the lines on the Veil side and not on the E.L.F. Seriously, that’s weird and I don’t know how E.L.F. photographs so well when it’s so clearly not hiding fine lines IRL.
The Verdict & Final Thoughts
I think I’m still right here—even with the photo trickery. I feel like Veil is a bit more spot on as a dupe for Tatcha over E.L.F, even though E.L.F. manages to work itself out in pictures. While I think E.L.F. created a pretty solid attempt at a dupe to a truly luxury product, it’s not a carbon copy. Tatcha mattifies and blurs. E.L.F. doesn’t. In fact, if you have naturally oily skin, you might find that the Poreless Putty Primer gives you more shine than you can handle and might even encourage product to shift over time. I have naturally dry skin, so even though it offers a dewy effect, it works out for me because it adds a touch of moisture before I start using brushes or sponges to buff out foundation or other product which would normally encourage flaking.
I truly believe the hype behind E.L.F.’s Poreless Putty Primer is the fact that luxe packaging aside, it looks like Tatcha, is $8.00, and offers slightly more product (0.72 oz) versus Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas at $52.00 with 0.70 oz. Am I mad that I bought the Poreless Putty Primer rather than got it gifted by the brand? No, it’s $8, that’s not the end of the world. It’s a good product, but the dupe title seems misplaced.

Side Note: On my last Test Drives post I noted how my NYX Eyeshadow Base was creasing. It turns out, I was applying too much product. This time I put a VERY thin layer and there’s no creasing in sight!

One Week Challenge: 10 Step K-Beauty Skincare Routine
One Week Challenge: 10 Step K-Beauty Skincare Routine ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ @MyTherapistSays ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ https://mytherapistsays.ca/one-week-challenge-10-step-k-beauty-skincare-routine/
Skincare: it is so damn hard. It can also take up tons of time in your day! The Korean beauty industry swears by a ten-step skincare routine (which can take upwards of 30 minutes). I’m here to test it out, see the benefits and if it’s worth it to spend so much time, energy, effort, and cash on your skincare. Everyone’s skin is so different, the thing I love about this challenge is how the products are all customizable to you, you can focus on clarifying, brightening, moisturizing, or really anything that your skin needs. Skin can change based on hormones, eating habits, drinking habits, and more.  Basically, there are four different (very broad) skin types, normal, dry, oily, and combination. I fall under combination which means that my pores on my t-zone can be an issue, I have minor random breakouts, I get oily on my t-zone but can get rough dry patches in other places – basically, my skin is all over the place!  This routine is great because when my skin is oily I can focus on that, but when my skin is dry I can also focus on that!
My interest in Korean skincare sprouted from when I was searching the internet to find some cool sheet masks (I will write an article to review the 10 different masks I ordered once they arrive). I stumbled upon Soko Glam, a Korean skincare site which makes Korean skincare accessible to people around the world! Sephora does have some k-beauty brands – but definitely not the whole roster which is what makes Soko so amazing.
While stalking the website I stumbled upon something amazing, the 10-step Korean skincare routine. This got me super intrigued, I realized that I was missing MANY steps in my skincare and that I could be doing so much more for my skin! I did not know how much of a lengthy process this would be though. Almost immediately when I was late to my fave workout class (they didn’t let me in and I got sad/stressed) I ran to Sephora to pick up some all new products to incorporate in my new ten step routine. I had a rough day at work and needed some retail therapy, don’t judge me! I grabbed everything I was missing to complete this routine and am challenging myself to try out this routine for 7 days straight.  I will see how I feel (skin wise and otherwise) and I will let you know if this is something I’m going to stick with or not at the end, and if it’s worth it to try this challenge out for yourself!
I did my research, read this article from Soko Glam, spoke with a Sephora rep. at the store and told her about what I would be doing, and came to the conclusion that I needed a toner, essence, some new moisturizer, sheet masks (which I ordered on Soko), and I needed to figure out my cleansing situation. Now I will take you through my routine, and give you a little weekly progress report.
1. Makeup Remover/Oil Cleanser
There is a reason this has 120k loves on Sephora, the Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm by Farmacy is super amazing. I am the type of girl who usually sticks with a makeup wipe from Neutrogena and MAYBE a cleanser or cleansing mask if I’m feeling it (usually not in the morning, and usually not when I’m too tired at night, so I would say about two nights a week – otherwise I just use the wipe – I know, I’m so bad). The cleansing situation is probably the biggest change to my routine but I am loving it. This cleansing balm is so nice and feels so luxurious on the skin but is also super powerful at scrubbing all my makeup away! I had waterproof mascara on and this did the trick almost instantly. It left my skin feeling refreshed and awesome, it smells great too.
2. Water Based Cleanser
Here I actually use a Korean skincare brand! I have been using Glow Recipe’s Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser for a while now – and I am truly here for it. It normally sits in my shower waiting for me to wash my face in there – but now it’s getting used more often so it’s made its way to my vanity! Mazel Tov cleanser, I’m so proud of you.
3. Exfoliate
For exfoliating I’m gonna alternate between an exfoliating mask (Summer Fridays Overtime Mask) which I have been obsessed with for some time now, and these NuFace exfoliating and cleansing wipes. I think I will use the mask every other night, and the wipes every morning and on the nights when I don’t use the mask. The mask smells so good and really leaves skin super exfoliated but also super-nourished, smooth, and soft.  The wipes are so amazing because I love how when I use them I can actually see the leftover makeup that I’m picking from on my skin (that would have been left behind if I missed this step so thanks K-beauty routine). The wipes also have a really nice light exfoliation as they just have these tiny little bumps on one side of the wipe, it feels really nice on the skin.
4. Toner
One of the new products I’m incorporating is the Ren Ready Steady Glow AHA Tonic, I just got this at Sephora and have been loving it. It smells super fruity and refreshing, but I can tell it’s really getting into my skin with some chemical exfoliation and some PH balancing. I finished my Glossier Solution and moved on to this – unfortunately, this took the cake and beat out my love and devotion for all things Glossier.  I still love Glossier and I am incorporating one of their products in the line-up, but for toner, this stuff really gets the dirty shit out of your skin and leaves you with the perfect base for the rest of your skincare.  Even after my 3 cleansing steps, I find that there is still some makeup/dirt residue picked up by this toner.
5. Essence
I had just recently purchased the Tatcha essence and have become obsessed. The effect it had on my skin within – I kid you not – days is outstanding. I now cannot go without this in my skincare routine, it keeps my skin plump, smooth, and super hydrated but also I’ve noticed that I get less oily throughout the day when I use this! You don’t put it on with a cotton pad (i thought that was how you did it and I wasted a ton of money on the SKII essence by using it this way and it did nothing for me).
6. Treatment/Serum
The good thing about treatments and serums is that you can mix them, layer them, and use this step to really personalize your skincare routine to exactly what your skin needs that day. The ones that I’ll probably focus mostly on during this little k-beauty challenge are the Sunday Riley Good Genes, the Glow Recipe Pineapple C Brightening Serum, the Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate and Glow Oil, and the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Oat & Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil. I’ve been using all these before and find they really work and do exactly what they claim to do! This way I can mix and match and say if I want to clear up my skin but not dry it out I can mix Good Genes with the Ultra Repair Cannabis Oil.
7. Sheet Mask
So as I mentioned, I ordered a bunch of Korean sheet masks online, still waiting for those to come so in the meantime I have been using what I have stashed away at home. I have a few of the Farmacy Hydrating & Brightening masks, as well as the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Jelly Sheet Mask, and the Saturday Skin Cotton Cloud Probiotic Power Mask. These all are pretty good for me, I love the jelly masks more than the cotton ones because I find they absorb into the skin more and leave my skin feeling bouncy and plump!
8. Eye Cream
So here we go Glossier, your time to shine. I picked up the Glossier bubble wrap (made my mom and sis walk back to the Glossier flagship in the pouring rain to get this after I forgot it because I’m annoying AF and I love Glossier) on a recent trip to New York and have ever since been obsessed. It’s bouncy and super hydrating so good job Glossier! This step is so soothing, and sometimes I’ll use a jade roller to de-puff my eyes even more.
9. Moisturizer
I have been loving the Protini moisturizer from Drunk Elephant recently, it is so fresh and dewy, super moisturizing, and I also find it evens my skin tone out a little bit as well. All around amazing. I also think it clears up some acne or at least makes acne less frequent on my face! When I reach this step in the routine I am so happy because I’m replenishing the moisture, but also it means that my routine is coming to an end!
10. SPF
This is the only thing in my routine that differs from morning to night, I don’t put any SPF on at night. When I use SPF in the morning I am obsessed with the Supergoop City Serum because it’s a sunscreen but also has some amazing nutrients for your skin in it as well. I always find sunscreen to feel weird on my face and pill up under makeup, but this one sinks in right away and is amazing! I haven’t gotten sunburnt since using this so I would give it a 10/10 rating.
Now onto the routine, let’s see how this goes…
DAY #1
I was honestly really excited to start this little challenge out, I love skincare and was really excited to extend my routine. The one thing I realized on day one was exactly how long a ten-step skincare routine takes (and it’s pretty damn long). For most steps of the routine, I like to wait a few minutes in between to let the skincare really sink in, but once you add two minutes between each step you’re already at a twenty-minute routine! In between steps I’ll brush my teeth, brush and/or style my hair, and maybe watch a little bit of Game of Thrones.
After doing the routine both in the morning and at night I can honestly tell you that my skin has never felt better. I love how clean my skin feels, but it also is SO nourished because of all the time and products being lathered on. The time thing may take some getting used to, but as of right now it is so worth it.
DAY #3
Okay – so I started this whole routine out on the weekend, but now it’s the week, and I have work (I have to be at the office at 7:30 am some days).  I am NOT a morning person, so waking up an extra thirty minutes early just for skincare is really pushing it for me. I had to rush through my routine this morning and not take breaks between each step. The routine did not feel as nourishing mentally or physically but at least I got it done! My skin is radiant though, even my mom noticed! So that’s a plus.
I have to say though, taking thirty minutes of my night to do skincare is probably the most relaxing part of my day! Self-care is so important and I really feel like when I take the time to do this ten-step skincare routine it nourishes my ‘self’ and allows me to take a minute to reflect on my day! I LOVE the nighttime part, but the morning routine is tiring.
DAY #5
My skin has never been like this! I’ve always had decent skin, minimal breakouts, I get oily by the end of the day, sometimes have some dry spots in the winter, but otherwise, I’ve never been very upset with my skin. This routine though is adding things to my skin that I didn’t realize I was missing! I never noticed how textured my skin was on my forehead and chin until I realized that the texture was almost gone! My pores have never been so discreet, and the elasticity of my skin is so amazing! Makeup goes on like it never has before, but I’ve really been able to keep my makeup minimal because my skin is so radiant on its own!
I’ve gotten over my early morning grudge because the results are to die for! I’m also trying to incorporate more self-care into my routine if I’m going to be set out so much time for this skincare routine I may as well get some other benefits too! I have added in jade rolling consistently between step 6 and 7, I do deep breathing exercises while letting my good genes treatment dry on my face, and I’ve also incorporated some self talk into the routine and try to say 3 things I like about myself while cleansing, and then while my sheet mask is on in the morning I’ll say 3 things that I’m looking forward to for my day and at night I’ll say 3 things I’m grateful for from my day. I also use essential oil with my diffuser and keep this on in the bathroom while I complete my routine.
DAY #7
So today is my last day of the challenge, but I’ve decided that I am most definitely going to extend it. Once I got over the early morning hump I realized how important it is to take time when I wake up and before I go to bed for myself. Doing skincare is great because it gives you a break from your phone and lets you look in the mirror and focus on the good! I’ve found that my routine is not only amazing for my skin, but the results in my mental health, stress, and confidence are stellar as well. Even if you don’t have the time to do the full ten step routine, try to set out a morning and night routine for yourself, and include some self-care aspects into your skincare routine. Consistency is key, and your skin and mind will for sure see benefits!

TATCHA: The Luxury Skincare Line Social Media Gurus Go Crazy For. Is it worth the hype?
by Danyelle V
Admit it. Beauty guru videos and blogs are your guilty pleasure. Don't hide in shame. Everyone watches contouring tutorials on Youtube and kinda sexy lip swatch videos on Instagram. They read lists of the top trending makeup on blogs and online magazines. They screenshot the products and techniques they want to try or save them to a Pinterest board. *raises hand* Shamelessly guilty AF. Whenever I see different bloggers using the same products over, and over, and over, and over, and raving about how this or that is a 'holy grail' product, I wonder if it worth the hype. Or worse, they're doing an ad and not telling you. Regardless of the price tag, the brand, the packaging -tell me how the damn product works and if it is actually that good.
Case in point: Luxury skincare line, Tatcha. You've seen some the the top beauty influencers talk about Tatcha. The way they delicately display the product or angelically spritz their face for glowing skin *does slow-mo blink towards camera.* Are they just talking about out it because everyone else is talking about it? Is it actually so good that you should try at least one product?
Tatcha is skincare based on Japanese beauty rituals that are simplistic and anti aging. The basis for the products is "Hadasei-3™, a trinity of anti-aging superfoods born from the Japanese diet, and the basis for the original geisha beauty rituals: green tea, rice and algae. Every ingredient is carefully selected and minimally manipulated to be gentle and safe with maximum effectiveness."
My experience with Tatcha began with a Christmas gift that, yes, I totally asked for. A deluxe sample pack of some of Tatcha's best sellers and most hyped products. I fell into the hype. I needed to know if that beautifully packaged skincare I had seen some of my favorite gurus, like Kathleenlights + and Desi Perkins, talk about was worth it. That purple hooked me!
You don't hear about Tatcha without hearing about the Luminous Dewy Skin Mist. If I could give this a higher rating, I would. If you have dry skin, this is your weapon! I used this under make up and It made my skin look radiant. I also loved to use it as a moisturizer on its own. This spray is like the instant results version of the GLAMGLOW Dream Duo Mask, which I reviewed a couple of months ago. My skin was supple like a juicy peach! If there is just one product you needed to try, this would be the one. The formula is like a light moisturizer but with powerful results.
Using an exfoliating powder is an experience. Take a small amount of the powder and mix in just a touch of water. As you massage the mixture on your face and neck, the dead skin just comes off. The Tatcha Classic Rice Enzyme Powder is no different. I was able to get a gentle exfoliation. The only down side I found to this exfoliator was that it wasn't strong enough for my nose. I can get lot's of dead skin around the corners of my nose and this enzyme powder was not enough to tackle my nose. I really enjoyed how the rest of my face looked. Espcially my cheeks. I looked like I had just gotten a spa facial.
Remember how I told that the pores on my nose are big enough to store your Metrocard for safe keeping? Well, they are. I was ready to call BS on this Tatcha Balanced Pore Perfecting Water Gel. I was like, "yeah right. don't even. I'm not here for the wild claims." Imagine my shock. Imagine how shook I was when after a few days of using this moisturizer, I saw the pores on my nose -actually smaller. Really? I was shook! There was a catch though. While this gel moisturizer did not dry out my skin, it wasn't enough moisture. After I applied the water gel, I could feel the skin tightness only folks with dry skin can understand. Instead of using the product as a moisturizer, I use it under makeup and focus it on my nose. It's looks flawless!
Ok this is the only product that I have tried from Tatcha that I think you could totally skip even though it is still pretty damn awesome. Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil is a silky cleanser. I regularly use oil cleansers to break down any makeup I had worn throughout the day. It melts away my makeup gently without stinging my eyes. I had never liked using an oil cleanser as my general face wash. But this oil is powerful enough to thoroughly clean my face. It is also light enough not to prompt me to go in with my usual cleanser. I like this product, but it's not run out and buy the same one worthy.
Tatcha Supple Moisture Rich Silk Cream. The one. The only. The amazing. The too damn good to be true. The too damn expensive to regularly buy. One-hundred-twenty dollars of pure perfection that would be worth every penny should you scour your couch for change to make the purchase. My skin looked better than it did than it did when I was 14 -plump, radiant, and not a hint of a fine line or a pore insight. It was bright and fresh. It felt so smooth. The Luminous Dewy Skin Mist is a product you must try. But the Supple Moisture Rich Silk Cream is my hands down favorite Tatcha product. I've gone through two deluxe sample size jars and I cherished every last drop. This is the star of the show! I love it!!!! I don't understand how such a light feeling moisturizer could have results of a day at the spa!
Tatcha is not just hyped up. Its line of Japanese perfected skin care that is worth trying! Even if it is just once. They smell heavenly, perform better than you can imagine, and are beautifully packaged. I can't get enough!!!

5 Skin-Saving Products for the Sleep-Deprived
It’s only been a few days since the time change, but is anyone else still feeling like their circadian rhythms are all messed up? The clocks may have only moved forward an hour, but to many of us that precious extra hour of sleep does a lot of heavy lifting, and the effects of losing it can range from drowsiness during the day to trouble getting to sleep at night. It’s almost like a mild case of jet lag, but without the fun of a trip.
If this sounds like you, you’re more than likely wearing those signs of slumber-deprivation on your face, too. In fact, a study out of the Karolinska Institute, a medical university in Sweden, found that the faces of sleep deprived individuals were perceived to have dark circles, red and swollen eyes, a dull complexion, and more pronounced wrinkles and fine lines. In short, your skin probably feels like you do—ready for a giant nap. To recalibrate your sleep, try heading to bed 15-20 minutes earlier than usual to catch up on rest. In the meantime, these skincare products can help you camouflage your exhaustion.
