Teaspoon, 803 Americana Way, Glendale, CA 91210
Tumblr media
Teaspoon recently opened on Brand, next to Chick-fil-a. They must still be in soft opening mode because they didn’t have quite a few things on the menu, like their house cream, grass jelly, pastries (cake, macarons, brownies), etc. The tea is made to order (they use a machine that looks like an espresso machine) and you can get organic milk. The fruit marmalades are made in house.
Choose from seasonal drinks, milk tea, coffee, and signature drinks like caramel cream, guava sunset, and strawberry sangria. You can also create your own drink ($5.75) and specify the level of sweetness, amount of ice, type of milk, and toppings (boba, popping boba, jellies, puddings).
Grasshopper: it was refreshing and light, tasted the cucumber juice more than the lychee green tea
Silky strawberry: housemade strawberry marmalade mixed with organic milk – basically strawberry milk with real strawberries – tasted natural, was fine but too simple for me. I prefer milk tea anyway.
Earl grey black tea with classic cream (lactose-free), 0% sweetness, light ice, grass jelly ($5.75 + $0.75): Their classic cream is lighter than whole milk. The tea flavor was weaker and the milk less creamy. The drink just seemed weaker in general, like watered down. The crystal boba were firm and sweet. Also, light ice was still half of cup of big ice cubes. The drink was expensive and not as flavorful.
It’s a nice looking, small shop with no indoor seating and a few tables outside. Sign up for rewards.
3 out of 5 stars

The older you become the more likely it is that you will be diagnosed with high blood pressure (HBP).  Hypertension is a blood pressure reading of over 140 (upper number or systolic pressure), and higher than 90 (lower number or diastolic pressure).  Systolic pressure is the number measured when your heart beats and diastolic is the number when your heart is at rest between beats.   You can have HBP for years and not experience any symptom which is why it is known as the silent killer.  HBP is the blood pushing against artery walls more forcefully (higher pressure) which is how damage is caused over a period of time.   People with HPB are at an added risk for heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and other serious complications.
Blood pressure should be checked on several different occasions over a period of a couple of weeks.  Blood pressure can be checked at home with a home blood pressure measurement device or monitor. It is important that you know how to use the monitor correctly and that the cuff fits you properly. For example, a cuff that is too small may give you a reading that is higher than it actually is.
Once it is established that you have suffer from hypertension, there are a number of things you can do to improve the situation.  It is recommended that you:
·         Limit your intake of sodium (some studies suggest no more than a teaspoon a day)
·         Exercise at least 30 minutes a day
·         Control your weight, and if you have a high BMI, try and reduce your weight
·         Follow the DASH diet, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension which is a low-fat diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and grains
There are several different categories of drugs that are used to treat hypertension.  Sometimes a doctor may prescribe a combination of drugs.  Even with taking the medications, it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle.

Kiwi Meringue Roulade
Tumblr media
Dessert Week on Bake Off has given me the most challenge (so far!) on my own little competition (with myself). I considered hiding my  under a chocolate bowl and making a peanut chocolate fudge sauce to pour on. I would certainly have enjoyed the decadence, but even for one who loves cooking and baking, Thanksgiving weekend is enough work as it is, and I’m not sure we would have appreciated the indulgence of it all full as we were. So, I thought I’d do something for dessert week, when I had the heart for it. Now, this weekend is the opening of the Rugby Sevens World Series new season, and the final of the Farah Palmer Cup; and a meringue roulade is basically a pavlova eh? See where I’m going with this? Canterbury won the Cup, and I have no doubt the Black Ferns Sevens Sisters will lift the USA Sevens Cup in Glendale tonight, whilst I’ll be celebrating with a generous helping of this Kiwi Meringue Roulade!
Ingredients (serves 8 to 12):
6 large egg whites
1/3 cup caster sugar
1 level teaspoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
Powdered Sugar
1 1/2 tablespoon Manuka Honey
1 tablespoon Stolen Dark Rum
3/4 cup heavy whipping cream
3 large just ripe New Zealand kiwifruit
4 heaped tablespoons Passionfruit Curd + more for topping
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paperSet aside.
In an electric stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat egg whites, gradually increasing speed from low to high, until stiff peaks just form. Gradually add caster sugar, 1 teaspoon at a time until none remains.
In a small bowl, stir together cornstarch with apple cider vinegar until well-blended.
Reduce speed to medium pour in cornstarch mixture until completely incorporated. Meringue should be smooth and glossy and hold together. Spoon meringue onto prepared baking sheet, and spread into a large even rectangle with a rubber spatula.
Place in the middle of the oven, and bake, at 400°F (200°C), 10 minutes, until very lightly golden on top. Reduce oven temperature to 355°F (180°C), and bake, another 12 minutes.
Prepare a large sheet of parchment paper, and sprinkle generously with Powdered Sugar.
Once meringue is baked, remove from the oven and carefully invert onto Powdered Sugar dusted parchment paper. Gently peel off parchement paper, and let meringue cool completely.
In a small glass, combine Manuka Honey and Stolen Dark Rum until well-mixed. Set aside.
Peel and dice two of the kiwifruit. Peel the third one, and cut into six slices. Using a small star-shaped cookie cutter, cut out a star from each slice. Dice scraps. Set aside.
In a medium bowl, beat heavy cream on high speed until soft peaks just form. Then, while still beating, gradually add Honey-Rum mixture, until stiff peaks form.
Spread three quarters of the Honey and Rum whipped cream onto cooled meringue, into an even layer. Drizzle generously with Passionfruit Curd, and scatter diced kiwifruit on top.
Helping yourself with the parchment paper, with the shorter side facing you, carefully roll meringue upwards, as tightly as you can. Keep rolled into parchment paper, and place into the refrigerator, at least 30 minutes.
Once chilled and set, carefully place roulade onto serving plate. Spoon remainining Honey and Rum whipped cream on top, drizzle with a little Passionfruit Curd, and decorate with kiwifruit stars. Serve Kiwi Meringue Roulade immediately.
