With an emphasis on dignity, comfort, and peace, we ensure that our patients live their remaining days with the utmost care and respect.
What is Hospice Care?
Hospice care is specialized care designed for individuals who are facing a life-limiting illness. This type of care is typically recommended when a patient is no longer seeking curative treatment, and the focus shifts to enhancing the quality of life rather than prolonging it. Canyon Lake Hospice Care of Temecula provides medical, emotional, and spiritual support tailored to each patient’s unique situation. Our goal is to manage symptoms, alleviate pain, and offer emotional guidance to both the patient and their family.
Hospice care can be provided in a variety of settings, including the patient’s home, a hospice center, or a long-term care facility. At Canyon Lake Hospice Care, we offer a flexible approach to ensure that patients receive the care they need in an environment where they feel most comfortable.
When is Hospice Care Appropriate?
Hospice care is typically considered when a patient has been diagnosed with a terminal illness and their doctor estimates a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its usual course. Some of the most common conditions requiring hospice care include:
Cancer: Patients who are no longer responding to treatment often benefit from hospice care as it allows them to focus on quality of life.
Heart Disease: Patients with advanced heart failure may require hospice care to manage symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue.
Lung Disease: Conditions such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) can lead to serious breathing issues, which hospice care can help alleviate.
Neurological Disorders: Diseases such as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and Alzheimer’s can benefit from hospice care as symptoms progress.
Kidney and Liver Failure: When these organs fail and no further treatment options are viable, hospice care can provide symptom management and emotional support.

When people think of growing old, they assume they’re going to decline physically and mentally.
That is true, Temecula resident Barbara Matthews said, but people can also become more spiritual as they age, improving their quality of life that way.
Tumblr media
Longtime Temecula resident Barbara Matthews is an expert on aging who says seniors need to focus more on spiritual care. (Photo courtesy of Barbara Matthews)
A veteran of 20 years in the health care industry, Matthews has worked at an assisted living facility, managed hospice and home health agencies, supervised caregivers and volunteered with Alzheimer’s patients.
She’s found that spiritual care doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
“Yet scientific study proves that various spiritual practices provide both physical benefits and lead to better quality of life,” she said. “For example, meditation reduces physical pain and a sense of purpose leads to life satisfaction.”
Matthews recently gave a 20-minute talk, “Care that’s missing,” on her expertise during a virtual Tedx event through Mt. San Jacinto College. She has written a book on the topic: “Old Age: The Paradox of Physical Decline and Spiritual Greatness.”
She hosted a talk show about senior care on a Redlands radio station.
She says health plans need more spiritual care.
“I want the industry to look at it, test it, and use it.”
Matthews, 69, has lived in Temecula 31 years and says southwest Riverside County is a good place for seniors.
The cost of living is cheaper than San Diego, Orange or Los Angeles counties, where she moved from.
There are plenty of stimulating things to do in the area, such as visiting local wineries and taking classes from local colleges.
“Lifelong learning is extremely important,” she said.
Volunteering is another way for seniors to stay active and there are many opportunities locally, Matthews said.
Many retirees previously found their self-worth in a job or raising kids. Now the job and the kids are gone.
“You need to replace those,” she said. “Volunteering gives seniors purpose. You need that. It gets you out of bed.”
As for her volunteering, she serves on her local faith’s governing board and on the Interfaith Council of Murrieta and Temecula.
Previously she volunteered for the Women’s Network, an after-school mentoring program for girls; the Alzheimer’s Association chapter of Riverside County; and a diabetes group that helped patients managed their condition.
She mentioned that purpose also can be something as simple as helping somebody cook, such as tasting food or chopping things. She let her elderly mom do that for her when she visited.
Seniors can take up something creative such as poetry, music, singing or a craft, she said. Once again, something that lifts the spirit.

As for visiting a retirement living facility, where a senior might reside and of which there are plenty in southwest Riverside County, she suggests relying on the senses when visiting potential places: What do you see, hear, taste smell and touch? A big one for her is the sound of laughter. A place with plenty of that could be a good place to live out the rest of your life.
She views old age as a chance to better understand who you are and why are you in this world.
“Old age is a gift because it forces us to focus on the spiritual side of us,” she said.
Something all of us would benefit from — no matter our years.

How to Find The Perfect Hospice For You!
The final nail in the coffin of your hospice plan may lie a year from now. A new study showed that 80% of medical centers surveyed in the U.S. and Europe anticipated a drop in visitation by patients over the next few years due to high levels of digital technology. Hospices have long been known for their innovative approaches to healthcare, and research shows them to be particularly effective at connecting people with care who need it most. KKK-friendly hospitals have popped up all over the world as a result, and some of them are quite good. Check out these useful tips for finding the perfect hospice for you!
Don’t Forget About Hospice Visitation
If you’re interested in finding the perfect hospice for you, you’ll first have to find one that’s close by. A good place to start is to research the best places to visit in your area. There are many options depending on your needs, but the ones with the lowest costs will likely be the best value for your money. You can also look into which hospices are best for your age group.
Have A Commitment To Quality Care
As the number of patients increases, so does the need for increased expectations for care. This trend has been reflected in the increase in specialty facilities, which now make up a large portion of all hospices. These facilities are equipped to meet the specialties’ needs, while still keeping in line with patient needs.
Keep An Eye Out For Great Care
As your experience with hospice grows, you’ll see more people talking about it. This is a great sign that you’re in the right place. One of the best things about hospices is that they’re flexible. You can choose which visits you want to make, and when. You can also decide if you want to make a schedule. It’ll help to keep in mind that you won’t be staying in your home for long periods, so you don’t want to be too rigid with your expectations. But you also not need to make a decision based on how long it will take to get your medications.
Wrapping up
The good news is that your hospice plan could be better. After all, your doctor has put together some great resources on how to find the perfect Hospice in Temecula for you. Now it’s up to you to make the most of it!

2016 Community Service Award Winners
Each year, Rich's honors associates who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to "Bettering Our Communities," one of the organization’s five family values. During a recent holiday celebration at Rich's World Headquarters in Buffalo, five individuals and three teams were presented the company’s Community Service Award, for going above and beyond and putting their passion for serving others into practice.
In recognition of their outstanding service, each individual and team received $1,000 from Rich’s to donate to the charity of their choice in their respective names. Congratulations to the company’s 2016 Community Service Award winners:
Kathy Gardner was recognized for her 15 years of volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, as well as her involvement with Kids Day put on by The Buffalo News, the Brush Up Buffalo neighborhood revitalization effort, United Way Day of Caring, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Kathy also has been a mentor in the Say Yes Mentoring Program, conducted United Way events for the Buffalo City Mission, and participated in the Corporate West Side Strategy Initiative. In addition, she coordinated and participated in Cooks for Kids at the Ronald McDonald House. A Deaconess for Congregational Care, Kathy is a member of her church leadership team, has led a women's ministry book study, and has taught Sunday school for 30 elementary-aged children. She also is active in Rich's "UB Connections" career development event series for local college students.
Collette Monolopolus shows her passion for service and her community through continuous involvement in multiple organizations and initiatives. She has become very active in Slow Roll Buffalo, a weekly community bicycle ride that encourages active lifestyles. Besides taking part in the rides, she has served in several ways, such as sweeping streets prior to actual rides, assisting with bike maintenance on the routes, and organizing raffles to support the organization. Collette also volunteers at Little Portions Friary, offering emotional support and guidance to the homeless men and women who seek shelter there. She currently is the chair of the Customer Services & Logistics department’s charity team and has been active in Meals on Wheels and Food for All, which addresses hunger issues in Western New York. On top of all this, she volunteered for Ride for Roswell (benefitting Buffalo’s Roswell Park Cancer Institute) and an event at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, in suburban Depew. Collette's commitment to the community does not stop with her, as she also involves her grandson, Noah, in many service activities, helping him build confidence and a passion for giving back.
Vilona Trachtenberg’s incredible service endeavors begin with her involvement in Danceability, where she serves on the board and is a volunteer instructor for children and adults with special needs. She has also been active with the Make-a-Wish Foundation, serving as a wish-granting volunteer. In addition, Vilona has dedicated her time and energy to many other causes through a diverse array of service activities, including marketing and logistics coordination for TEDxYouth@Buffalo (an offshoot of the popular Ted Talks initiative); volunteering for Relay for Life; helping coordinate Rich's three-day “Olympiad,” to support Special Olympics of Western New York; serving as a Food for All volunteer; assisting with the Salvation Army Backpack Drive; volunteering for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's BassEye fundraiser at Rich's; raising money for WNY Heroes, which supports area veterans and the families of deceased veterans; sitting on a task force at the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo; and being an active member of the charity team within her department at Rich’s.
Michael Machowski’s service is characterized by his ability and passion for creating emotional, physical and spiritual growth in his community. For the past six years, Michael has worked with Manna on Wheels, near Tampa, Florida, in support of its efforts to provide food for the hungry and less fortunate. Additionally, he supports the local food bank by donating leftover food from various community events that otherwise would be thrown away. Michael is also heavily involved in First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee, part of a nationwide development program that uses golf to help shape the lives of young people. He helps give these youths the opportunity to not only learn about golf, but also learn important life lessons and gain guidance and support.
Peter Konn and his wife, Kandy, give back to their city of Temecula, in Southern California, in extraordinary ways. The couple completed a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, so they would have the knowledge and skills necessary for responding to catastrophic emergencies in their area. Peter and Kandy have since joined the Temecula Citizen Corps (or TCC), an all-volunteer group trained as Disaster Service Workers. They now train on a regular basis, staying prepared for different disaster scenarios and assisting Temecula City Hall with its earthquake simulation drills. Peter also helps provide first aid stations at community events, advises the community on emergency preparedness, supports the setup of Neighborhood Watch programs, and assists with CERT training for high school students.
The South Africa “Better Our Communities” Charity Team has been involved in a number of diverse activities that have had a positive impact on countless individuals throughout the region. In addition to product donations to Meals on Wheels and cake donations to the SOS Children's Village, team members have supported Mandela Day celebrations both at Shoprite (Africa’s largest food retailer) and at a primary school in Soweto, contributing donuts, breads, rolls, cookies, muffins and much more. Continuing their famous “Cake Carnival” cake-decorating parties, the team brought sweets, lunch and joy to children in both the Lambano Hospice Facility for Children and the St. Francis Care Center. Last year, the group began providing support in the form of bakery skills and business development assistance at a new youth center called Bukho Bami, which means “My Core, My True Self.” Through the team’s donation of an oven mixer, freezer and lighting, plus the efforts of two groups of associates who assisted with bakery and product training, a fully functioning bakery has opened, generating income for the youth center and providing baked goods for the community. Finally, the team has remained very involved with the organization Enactus, a nonprofit entity that uses entrepreneurial action to improve quality of life for those in need.
The Rich Colombia Sales Office Charity Team, consisting of Diana Paola Valbuena, Yuly Zea, Marcela Suarez, Alexandra Escobar, Andrea Carolina Vieira, Ingrith Pulido, Alba Patricia Conde and Maria Victoria Enciso, has found purpose in sharing knowledge, improving children's nutrition, and helping all who are in need. The team volunteers at a local food bank, helping to serve quality food and improve the efficiency of the organization. At the food bank, they also have participated in a “Pack On” event, helping to pack hundreds of meals for the hungry and less fortunate. In addition, team members have started their own initiatives. Last year, they dedicated the month of June to their Donate Your Knowledge program, encouraging associates to go out into the community and share their expertise where it is needed – creating more local ties in the process. The group’s most-recent program, Bet on Nutrition, provides food reinforcement to vulnerable children and older adults in the most-disadvantaged sectors of Bogota and surrounding municipalities.
The ROAR Logistics Team, made up of associates at the Rich’s subsidiary specializing in transportation logistics, in early 2016 joined the mission to deliver urgently needed clean water to the citizens of Flint, Michigan. “Operation H2O,” which was organized by a local Buffalo church, quickly gained support across Western New York, as people showed up to donate case after case of bottled water for the people of Flint. Upon learning about the effort, ROAR Logistics President Bob Rich III leveraged his company's transportation connections and offered his team's manpower and expertise to safely load and deliver the water. As a result, ROAR ended up piloting a caravan of fully loaded 18-wheelers to Michigan, delivering relief and hope to a suffering community.
