Imagine meeting this guy who you think is maybe a double agent and then he starts traipsing across every continent in the world after you and then he becomes the only person who can tether you to reality and THEN he shows up asking you to pick out curtains for a pavilion for your dragon, which he is building on his grounds, so you can stay with him forever!! Like I’m sorry I would simply COMBUST

As much as I love the plot of book 8, sometimes I get a little bit sad that, while we got to see Granby’s honest reaction, we we were robbed of Laurence getting the news Iskierka was with Temeraires egg. You just know he would have been properly mortified.

Related to that last post, I love that Laurence and Tharkay have as of VoE both had the experience of awkwardly meeting the person the other wanted to marry, followed immediately by an extremely high stakes deadly stealth mission.

Four and a half hours before I have to get up for work.

Anyway, think of the first few months in a Scotland where Laurence, Tharkay, and Temeraire are all adjusting to having time to breathe and process everything they went through. Every single one of them shows signs of some form of PTSD and just think of the days they’d spend just trying to reorient themselves, learning the signs in one another so they can comfort each other or offer what support they can.

Laurence’s memory is still faulty sometimes, and some nights he wakes up to the scent of blood and smoke and the destruction and anger and desperation that he caused.

Temeraire tosses and turns and his scars burn, and sometimes he panics wondering where Laurence has gone even though he’s right there. Sometimes he sees the faces of dragons who were never given a chance, and he wonders if they’ll ever be. If anything he’s doing will make a difference.

Then there’s Tharkay, the resident cat who has learned to hide himself away to lick his wounds. But some days his hands hurt so bad the can’t button his own shirts and sometimes he can’t sleep in the dark because it makes his heart race. He’s spent so long in free fall, and now he’s finally landed, the world rushing up to meet him and where does he go from here?

god the parallels make me unwell. the way in book 1, Berkley says that they're actually sorry and grieving for Praecursoris bc he is a dragon and was only doing what his captain told him to do, because Praecursoris would not have thought it on his own as he does not care for king and country. But then in book 4, Temeraire is saying to Laurence that Laurence did it on Temeraire's behalf, that Laurence would not have thought it on his own as he cares, so very much, for king and country, even to the point of dooming him.
