Downtown New York’s Coolest Store Launches Online Global Marketplace
VFiles is a downtown NYC store or collective (depends how fashion-savvy you want to be) where cool cult streetwear brands are birthed, and where youth culture connects to the established influencers in the world.  This is the place where brands such as Hood by Air, Gypsy Sport, Pyrex and Been Trill all got their start to give you an idea of the impact it has had on young designers.
Today, VFiles will launch their new global marketplace where contributors and young designers can sell directly on their VFiles profile on the website and on VFiles App. The goal of this marketplace is so young designers has a platform to sell their products, giving autonomy back to young designers so they don’t have to feel the pressure of selling to a big department store in order to get their products out in the market. This will give designers the chance to control their product, their inventory and with the help of the tools provided by the VFiles platform. Wth so many of the traditional department stores downsizing their spaces and the fashion calendar and merchandise model changing, VFiles Marketplace could be the model of e-commerce where young designers can sell direct to consumers and have the support to get their brand and voices out there for audiences worldwide.
The first designers to launch with the global marketplace are as follows:

Slashed by Tia Source: Instagram/SlashedbyTia
If you thought “Naija to the world” was just a trend, think again. The stakes are higher, as more Nigerian creatives make the move towards occupying seats at the global entertainment table. With features in Essence and Glamour Magazine, as well as a recent Teen Vogue NYFW mentorship programme, Slashed by Tia’s Teni Adeola has come a long way from her Ituen Basi intern days.

It started with the music. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen Nigerian music often dubbed “Afro-beat” slowly infiltrate the global market. We had a mini moment when Wizkid lent faint but memorable vocals to culture vulture Drake’s 2016 hit single, One Dance, and an even bigger moment when Beyonce curated an entire album built off our sound, featuring 7 of the biggest names in our industry. While Nigerian music has had a meteoric rise to the global entertainment stratosphere, fashion has had its own moment, even though it’s acceleration might be slower.

From Maki Oh to Jewel by Lisa and now, Mowalola. Nigerian designers have been building a more diversified clientele and gaining the attention of world-renowned magazines and shows. When you consider the challenges facing the industry especially the designers based here, it’s hard not to root for their success and celebrate each moment or feature, no matter how small, as a triumph.
At just 21, New York-based Nigerian designer, Teni Adeola, has single-handedly built a globally recognized label, leveraging on the power of social media marketing. Slashed by Tia which was launched in 2016 while Teni was still in school, has become a go-to for fun, flirty and confident pieces that represent a new generation of women going against societal norms and slut-shaming. Speaking to Glamour about the risque pieces the brand has been known to put out, the Parsons graduate said, “A lot of the time people wear see-through clothes and it’s often described as tacky or distasteful, but I feel like with my clothes, even though it may be see-through and you may be seeing boobs, there definitely is an artistic aspect to it…..With my clothes, I definitely wanted to make them slightly more risqué. It just goes against the whole idea of ruffles at the time and just how women were viewed at the time.”

Teni who described her line’s aesthetic as “Modern Renaissance” draws inspiration from old paintings and the obsession with ruffles back in the day. Her sheer ruffled pieces have been spotted on Grammy winners, Dua Lipa and Lorde; R&B star, SZA; Young Miami from City Girls; Supermodels Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn.
A huge supporter of the diversity in fashion movement being a dark-skinned girl from Nigeria, most of the labels ads and runway shows have featured models of color. With over 47,000 followers on Instagram, Slashed by Tia is a perfect example of adapting to a new age of social media marketing which cuts costs, and has a wider reach. Fun fact; Both Sza and Kali Uchis shot Teni a DM on Instagram to get their Slashed by Tia fix.

Kept this pretty secret until now but finally can reveal I’m so excited to be among the first ever @teenvogue Generation Next designers to present my collection at New York fashion Week! Thankyou @lpeopleswagner and @teenvogue team for supporting young designers and can’t wait to be part of this !! 🥰🥰 #dykesport #nyfw #tvgenerationnext
A post shared by Georgia Fallon (@dykesport) on Aug 22, 2019 at 4:27pm PDT
Her recent selection by Conde Nast’s Teen Vogue for a mentorship programme at the recently concluded New York Fashion Week came as no surprise. While Teni might not face the same structural and infrastructural roadblocks Nigerian-based designers face, running a label on your own cannot be easy. However, her hard work has paid off. Talking to Essence Magazine about her role in moving the culture forward, she said, “At the end of the day, we’re young, we’re shifting things, so I just have to keep playing my part, have to keep doing what’s right.”

She did look amazing in her Re/Done jeans, bucket bag, tangerine pumps, and gold baby alligator shaped earrings. But, what really caught my eye was that top! Colored a bright, “I must be seen” orange , with translucent mesh fabric. The midriff revealing stunner also had these luscious ruffled, puffy sleeves and I felt like I had seen that style before. Could it be Slashed By Tia ? Indeed it was! Those ruffled sleeves, reminiscent of 16th century Spain with an extraordinary modern twist, are hard to forget. That is Teni Adeola, a.k.a. Tia’s , signature. I have been following her work since her debut Instagram drop in 2016 with the ruffled red mini dress she created and posted with the statement “If it's not Slashed by Tia , I’m not wearing it”. No negative self-talk here! Although it has only been two years since then, her growth in popularity has skyrocketed and her growth as a designer is really something to behold too. And Gigi isn't the only starlet rocking slashed by Tia, she has been able to dress celebrities like Amanda Steele, Karrueche, Lorde, and SZA just to name a few. In addition to this, she has been featured on The Fader, Galore Magazine, Paper Mag, and now seen in Vogue! To celebrate her success and this milestone I want to walk you down the brief but inspiring story of how Teni Adeola went from small-time Instagram shop to high fashion editorial.  Frill sleeve crop styled by @rachelgilman_ for @papermagazine 🦋🦋🦋📸 @arkanzakharov A post shared by TIA (@slashedbytia) on Jul 15, 2018 at 7:32am PDT At the age of 11 Teni moved from Nigeria  to London where she grew up and received her primary education. As she approached her time for higher learning the original plan was for her to attend law school, as required by her parents. Teni, however, had other plans. She secretly applied to the Parson’s School of Design AND attained a scholarship which was the driving factor for her parents to loosen the reigns and allow her to drop the law school goal.  She was 8 years old when she started sewing. In Nigeria, her mom would collect beautiful fabrics. Teni would take needles and thread and pieces of the fabric from her collection to make extravagant dresses for her barbies. Later she took many textile classes during her time in high school. During her Sophomore year, then only 19, she began making silky, backless tops because she was allured by backless styles at the time. Then friends started taking a liking to the pieces, so she’d make the tops for them. A friend would tell a friend and it just grew from there. Instagram played a big role in the initial growth of Slashed. When she started, she made pieces and fulfilled them through Instagram  ordering. The dress that started it all 🍒🍒🍒🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🍫🍫🍫🍫 A post shared by TIA (@slashedbytia) on Jun 25, 2017 at 11:52am PDT Within just a year of her debut, Slashed by Tia had already garnered a dope following. It wasn't long after Instagram that the Twitterverse took notice of the majesty in her clothing line. She made the first yellow mesh set and featured it in a video. The video was retweeted all over and ended up going viral. SZA commented on it, which made Slashed get even more attention. Then the first celebrity sighting in Slashed arrive with girl group Little Mix in their video with CNCO, Reggaetón Lento. Now in 2018, Teni is still in school, hustling through classes, designing, working with the press, and still building her empire. She even has Kali Uchis sliding up in her DMs asking to work on a custom-pieces for her tour. She says that was actually where her skort set evolved!   photo: courtesy slashedbytia.net  So, what is next for Slashed? Her dream for Slashed by Tia is to keep on making items suitable and affordable for every girl such as the reflective ruffle sets and the skort sets but her ultimate end goal has always been to make couture garments and to be commissioned by icons to bring her amazing ideas to life. She attributes her success to hard work and being able to create things that women really enjoy. We wish her luck and offer continuous support and we can’t wait to see the next lines that come out. Comment below if you have your own personal design dreams that you are working to get off the ground. Or If you just adore Teni’s story and want to show some love!
